Work Text:
How did they get here?
Vi recalled how just this morning they planned for an uneventful day out in the city. It was a rare day off for Cait, and Vi wanted to go on a date. Yet somehow, they found themselves back in the Kiramman estate with her girlfriend and her friend laser focused on each other—glaring at each other, really—as their hands busied themselves on polishing their respective guns.
The wind picked up then, blowing dust and leaves in its course. It really added to the dramatic flair of a situation Vi found herself in. All that’s missing is suspenseful music.
“Place your bets! Place your bets, now!”
The impromptu competition even has a host slash speaker in the form of her little sister who appears to be enjoying this more than Vi expected her to.
“Willing to put your wealth on the line for Piltover’s princess and sweetheart?” Jinx worked the crowd, which is really just Ekko and Jayce, but she is a performer by heart, “Or! Would you risk it all for Bilgewater’s very own Pirate Queen!”
At Jinx’s introduction, Caitlyn and Sarah took their stance, rifle and pistols ready. Vi feels as though she should remind the two ladies that their target was not each other. Beside her, Jinx is now attempting to manhandle Jayce.
“Come on, pretty boy! The princess or the queen?!” Jinx swatted Ekko’s hand when he made an effort to free Jayce from his girlfriend’s terrorizing hands, “It’s a no brainer! Gimme your money.”
“What do you mean it’s a no brainer?” Cait finally spoke up, scoffing as Jinx made an unapproving sound when Jayce placed his bets on her.
Sarah chuckled, “Don’t be mad the sisters like me better, princess.”
“Demolish her, Sarah!”
“Jinx, where did you get that?!”
Vi pulled the makeshift banner Jinx got out of nowhere with blue and pink lines that read ‘Team Sarah 4 da Win!’ Caitlyn was most definitely not impressed, especially when Jinx only screamed louder as Sarah gave her a performative wink.
Vi knows Caitlyn. And sometimes, Vi thinks she knows Cait more than Cait knows herself. So, although the blue-eyed girl tries not to show it, she is bothered, disappointed even, by Jinx’s apparent distaste for her. The obvious solution in that moment was to cheer louder for the love of her life.
Vi cupped her mouth, even though the women are a mere twenty feet away, “You know who’s an excellent shot? Caitlyn fucking Kirraman!”
The smile that blooms on her girlfriend’s face is worth her sister making gagging noises by her ear. Suddenly, there was a sound of creaking wood attached to a metal screw as the painted targets sprung up from their hiding spots. As the two women prepare to take their shot, Vi sees Cait hesitate. She met her eyes and silently asked what’s wrong, Caitlyn’s cheeks reddened in response. Before Vi could prod further, Caitlyn straightened her posture and brought the tips of her fingers on her lips—blowing Vi a kiss.
And oh, Vi was absolutely in love with this girl.
She is going to make sure Cait knows that after she wins. After all, she got this in the bag.
“Good luck to you too, Sarah!” Vi calls out, because while she is rooting for Cait, Sarah is still a dear friend.
Caitlyn faltered in her steps as Sarah smirked smugly, “Thanks, Vi! I’ve got a good feeling about this.”
And then, oh , that’s how they ended up here.
__________
“Vi, someone’s following us.”
Vi shot up in alarm, scanning Caitlyn’s face for any signs of humor. Caitlyn’s idea of a joke sometimes is…not normal. But, against her hopes, Vi saw that her girlfriend was serious. Vi tries not to groan in frustration.
One day.
Just one day with Caitlyn where they have no work, no plans, and they get to just enjoy their date amongst the mundane things of life. Then again, dating a Kiramman Heiress who is also the Sheriff is anything but mundane.
Vi discreetly looked around, “Description?”
“Red hair. Cloaked. But from what I can see, she’s wearing a white blouse. Dark Bodice. And two pistols.” Caitlyn rested her hand on the small of Vi’s back, urging her along. She much prefers to avoid a fight in the middle of the town market.
Only, Vi is unmoving under her touch.
“Vi?”
“You said red hair and two pistols?”
Before Caitlyn could reply, Vi had already turned her body to look for their alleged stalker. The woman was three stalls behind them on the opposite side of the road, red hair peeking out from hooded cloak and a smile in her eyes as Vi spotted her.
Caitlyn pulled her back, unaware of the minimal (to vi, at least) threat the other woman posed, “What are you doing?”
“It’s ok, Cupcake.” Vi said, holding Cait’s hand as she led them towards the red-haired woman, “She’s a friend.”
“A friend?” Caitlyn echoed as the strange woman met them halfway, her smile unsettling Caitlyn.
“Oh. Is that all you think of me, Vi?” It seems the woman heard her, looking far too amused for Caitlyn’s liking, “How long has it been?”
Caitlyn trusts Vi with all her being, and if she says this woman is a friend, then Caitlyn will try to believe that. Even if it is exceptionally hard to do so because instead of approaching them like a normal person, she chose to follow them. There is also the issue of how the woman was clearly eyeing her partner from head to toe and enjoying what she’s seeing.
The lip bite was also unnecessary in Caitlyn’s opinion.
Caitlyn watches Vi reach a hand out, and she tries oh so hard not to show her eye twitch at the amused giggle the red-haired woman let out upon indulging Vi with a handshake.
“My, you’ve become quite the gentleman,” the woman purred and had the audacity to lean into Vi’s space.
The nerve, Caitlyn thought.
As if it couldn’t get any worse, Caitlyn watches as this unknown woman redirects the handshake by bringing Violet’s knuckles to her painted lips.
“Where’s my rifle?”
“Cait, what?” Vi forgets about the kiss and turns her attention towards her partner.
Thing is, Caitlyn realized too late she said what she thought out loud.
Stuttering, the Sheriff tries to save her dignity, “I–I just couldn’t help but notice her fine set of firearms.”
“Oh!” Vi exclaimed, remembering the integral role guns play in her lover’s life, “That’s right! Sarah, Cait has got this fancy rifle and she’s really into guns.”
The woman, Sarah, raised an eyebrow as she finally acknowledged Caitlyn’s presence, “Is that so? You any good?”
Caitlyn bristled, “I’m an excellent shot.”
“Vi has a type then,” Sarah teased.
“Pardon?”
“You are pardoned,” Sarah just as quickly dismissed her as she acknowledged her, “Vi and I have some catching up to do.”
Seeing Vi blush at that comment has Caitlyn fuming. Who exactly is this woman? How did her and Vi meet?
And who does she think she is being so rude, “That is not what I meant, miss Sarah.”
“Fortune.”
“What?”
“Sarah Fortune.”
Caitlyn tries not to roll her eyes, “Clever.”
“Thank you, but that really is just my name. I bet you’re one clever girl though.”
Sarah is provoking her, Cait knows it. But before she could retort in some way, Vi jumped in.
“She is!” Vi donned a proud smile that Caitlyn almost forgets about the other redhead, “She’s the best Detective in Piltover!”
“I see,” Sarah laughed, more at Vi’s eagerness than at Caitlyn’s expense, “We really have a lot in common then, Detective.”
Caitlyn knows she shouldn’t have taken the bait, but this woman is really testing her.
“Pray tell, in what way are we similar?”
“Well,” Sarah starts, moving away from Vi much to Caitlyn’s relief, “We like handling guns. And we hunt for bad people so we can take them away.”
Caitlyn scoffed in amusement, “That’s all?”
“Well, we’re both hot. Don’t you agree, Vi?”
Caitlyn startles at that and pulled on Vi’s hand to bring her partner closer to her side, straight out glaring at the other woman without hiding it now.
“In any case, I would argue that I’m a better shot.”
Sarah’s eyes widened at the bold declaration, “Is that so?”
Caitlyn only shrugged in response, serving to fuel the fire in Sarah’s eyes.
“Alright then,” Sarah rolled her shoulders and looked Caitlyn dead in the eye, “How about we see if that’s true?”
“Uhm, guys?” Vi’s voice fell on deaf ears.
“My estate has a shooting range,” Caitlyn was quick to offer.
“Your estate?” Sarah mocked, “Very posh.”
“Guys?” Vi tries again.
“Vi likes me posh.”
“Really? Last I checked she likes them gritty.”
“Guys!” Vi, in that moment, can feel the towering height the two women have on her.
“I’ve held a gun for as long as I can remember,” Caitlyn refuses to back down now, “You don’t know what you're getting into.”
Sarah only gave her a smug-looking smirk, “The bigger the risk, the bigger the bounty.”
__________
“I bet you’re gonna miss this one,” Sarah taunted, though she still has that stupid satisfied smile on her face that Caitlyn hoped would be wiped away by now.
“Me, miss?” Caitlyn reloaded, exuding confidence of a woman who knows she is winning, “Not by a long shot.”
Caitlyn pulled the trigger and delivered the winning shot. She hears Vi whoop and cheer, accompanied by Jinx’s feet stomping and the boy’s more calmer reaction of enthusiastically clapping. She won. Although if she were honest with herself, the rifle provided an advantage over the pistols if they were to consider the nature of the competition. But somehow, Sarah Fortune still gave her quite the competition.
If only she wasn’t so apparent with her affections towards Vi, or at least makes an attempt to hide it, Caitlyn could have seen herself enjoying the other woman’s company. Sarah is quite the marksman.
“You shoot good,” Sarah admits, holstering her pistols.
Caitlyn thanked her and was about to return the compliment—
“Vi always had taste,” Sarah added.
“Will you please stop that?” Caitlyn would pull her hair out if she didn’t have so much training about keeping composure, “I don’t like what you are insinuating.”
The other woman simply batted her eyes innocently, “What? That you’re a catch?”
“We both know that’s not what you meant.”
Their conversation was cut short by a blue flash of hair coming in between them. Jinx took the opportunity to ensure Sarah knew she did great.
“You were like, so close! It was so cool!”
The rest of their audience came to congratulate both ladies, but to Cait—and probably to Sarah too, Cait thought—the one that mattered most opened her arms as an invitation that Caitlyn responded positively.
Vi squeezed her girl lightly, “I knew you would win.”
It was stupid. This competition was stupid. It started because Caitlyn was being stupid. She could have spent the whole day with Vi, but instead wasted it to prove a point.
“I’m sorry I ruined our date,” Caitlyn whispered, burying her face in Vi’s hair.
Vi let out a low laugh, the sound reverberating through her whole body that Caitlyn felt it by the way her shoulders shook—Vi’s very broad shoulders. Caitlyn decides that Vi’s going to get lucky tonight.
“I liked watching you in your element, Cupcake,” Vi swayed both their bodies gently, “Besides, we still have the rest of the day. What do you say?”
Retreating from the comfort of Vi’s locks, Caitlyn shifted her hands that rested on her lover’s shoulders to place them on soft cheeks, “You are definitely getting lucky tonight, Violet.”
Warmth spread from Vi’s neck to her face until it reached the tip of her ears. Face matching the color of her hair. All that’s missing is steam blowing out of her ears.
“Are they always like this?”
Outside the two lovers’ bubble are the rest of their friends and family.
“Yep.”
“Pretty much.”
“You should’ve shot Caitlyn when you had the chance, Sarah.”
“Jinx!” Both men berated the overzealous girl.
“Ugh, fine!” Jinx pouted before leaning her body to rest on the older red-head, “Good to see you again, by the way.”
“You too, Jinx.”
