Work Text:
1.
Nejire knew her two best friends had crushes on one another, and she was going to help them get together!
She sat next to Mirio, who was staring longingly at Tamaki.
“You should tell him,” she said bluntly.
Mirio looked back at her, confused. “Tell him what?”
“That you like him, of course!” Nejire said brightly.
“But he already knows I like him,” Mirio said, getting her hopes up. “We’re best friends, after all,” he added, plummeting her hopes back down.
“Okay, you like him, but you also like like him.”
Mirio’s brows furrowed. “What are you saying?”
“Your crush?”
“What?”
“Nevermind.” It was clear she was going to need to take more drastic measures.
2.
Mirio wasn’t sure what was up with Nejire, but there was certainly something wrong.
“Nejire-chan, is something bothering you?”
“Oh, nothing,” Nejire said unconvincingly. “I just… made too many cookies!” She shoved 2 boxes of cookies into Mirio’s hands. “But it’s too many for just you, so you should give some to Tamaki-kun, too!”
“Oh, thanks, Nejire-chan!” Mirio said, touched. “I’ll let him know you made these for us!”
“No need to thank me, in fact, you should tell Tamaki-kun that you’re the one who made them,” Nejire said.
Mirio furrowed his eyebrows. “...Why do you want me to take credit for your work?”
“It’s such a thoughtful gift, and you worked hard on it-”
“No, you worked hard on it, and you gave it to me. Nejire-chan, are you sure you’re-”
“Forget it,” Nejire said in a huff.
Mirio stared after the girl as she walked away, obviously angered. He didn’t understand what he’d done wrong, let alone why she wanted him to take credit for the cookies.
Mirio took a bite of one of the cookies. They were delicious, and also chocolate chip, Tamaki’s favorite. She’d obviously made them with him in mind.
3.
Tamaki found a note in his locker.
My dear Tamaki-kun~
I have had a crush on you for a while now, and I have finally gotten the courage to let you know. I will be waiting for you on the rooftop during lunch, if you’d like to meet me.
Tamaki felt his face flush a bright red. Someone had feelings for him?
Could that someone be Mirio?
For the rest of the morning, Tamaki was thrumming with energy. He didn’t know who had given him the note, so he had to be prepared both for a potential confession from Mirio and for turning down anyone who wasn’t him.
When the time for lunch came around, Tamaki waited a few minutes before going up to the roof, both to allow the confessor the time to get up there and to take some deep breaths to calm his racing heart. He walked up the steps and took one final deep breath before opening the door.
Mirio stood on the other side, and he beamed at the sight of Tamaki. “Tamaki-kun, you’re here!”
Tamaki felt his entire face set ablaze as his heart raced. “Mirio-kun? You’re the one-”
“Now the only one we’re waiting for is Nejire-chan!”
Tamaki blinked. “What?”
“You know, how she texted for us to eat lunch here today!”
“...So you didn’t leave a note in my locker?”
“...No? Someone else did?”
Tamaki stared at the note in his hand, before whipping out his phone and dialling Nejire.
“Tamaki-kun?”
“Did you leave the note in my locker?”
“...Maybe?”
“And you sent Mirio up here?”
“...Yes,” she admitted.
“Why??” Tamaki asked, positively bewildered.
Nejire hung up.
Tamaki and Mirio exchanged glances.
“What did the note say?” Mirio asked.
Tamaki crumpled the note. “Nope.”
4.
“Could you two get the party supplies out of the closet?” Nejire asked, the gears in her head spinning. If she could trap these two in a room together…
“Oh, we’d be happy to,” Mirio said brightly, grasping Tamaki’s elbow. “What should we grab for you?”
“Tablecloths, plates, cups, plasticware, any decorating supplies you guys come across,” Nejire listed, counting the items on her fingers.
“On it,” Tamaki said with a nod.
The pair retreated into the closet, and Nejire only spent a moment fishing the keys out of her pocket before striking! After all, if they couldn’t get out, they would have to talk through their feelings eventually! Nejire shut the door behind them, locking the door before they could react.
“Nejire!” Tamaki cried out in protest.
“Let us out,” Mirio added.
“No,” Nejire said, smirking.
…Nejire might have forgotten to account for something.
Mirio phased through the door, looking entirely unamused. “Give me the key, Nejire-chan.”
Nejire sighed, holding out the key. It looked like this plan was a bust, too.
5.
Tamaki couldn’t help but shiver as he felt Nejire’s intense stare over his shoulder.
“She’s just… staring at us,” Tamaki murmured. “Why is she staring at us like that?”
“Why did she try to lock us in a closet yesterday?” Mirio countered, sounding equally confused. “Something is going on inside her brain, and it has to do with the two of us.”
“But what could it be?” Tamaki wondered.
“Gods above, you two are impossible!” Nejire yelled, before whirling around and storming out of the classroom.
“...Okay then.” Tamaki didn’t have the mental energy to try to figure out what that was about.
+1.
Mirio honestly didn’t know what came over him when the words spilled out of his mouth.
“I’m in love with you,” Mirio blurted as he and Tamaki were walking along the UA grounds, returning from a grocery shopping trip for their dorm’s kitchen.
Tamaki stopped dead in his tracks, the groceries that had been in his hands the moment before thudding on the ground. “Are you serious?”
“I am,” Mirio said, nodding, feeling his smile tense. “I’ve been in love with you for months, really, I just haven’t had the nerve to tell you.”
“Are you really in love with me?” Tamaki asked, seemingly unable to grasp it.
“I- yes, I am- is that okay? If you don’t feel the same way, nothing needs to change,” Mirio assured, carefully setting down his own groceries and gently grasping Tamaki’s hands. “But since it slipped out from between my lips I might as well repeat it. I am very much in love with you, and I promise I am not joking.”
“Can I kiss you?” Tamaki asked, eyes burning.
Mirio startled. “What?”
“I’d like to kiss you. May I?”
“I would love that,” Mirio told him.
And as Tamaki pressed his lips to Mirio’s, all Mirio could feel was overwhelming bliss.
+2.
Nejire stared at the interlaced hands, then up at Mirio, then at Tamaki, then back at the interlaced hands.
“...Are you-”
“I confessed to him,” Mirio said, beaming.
“I said yes,” Tamaki added, blushing furiously.
“Well, he kissed me. Which was an obvious answer,” Mirio corrected.
“...So you’re telling me, after all the work I did, you two went ahead and got together yourselves?” Nejire asked, 100% offended. She couldn’t believe this. They went behind her backs and got together when she wasn’t even there?!
Mirio’s smile dimmed slightly. “It’s nothing against you, Nejire-chan-”
“I wasn’t even there!” Nejire cried, infuriated.
Mirio scrambled to explain. “It was really spur of the moment-”
“I didn’t even really know what was happening,” Tamaki added.
“And we do really care about you!” Mirio assured.
Nejire couldn’t hold herself back anymore. She stepped forward, slinging her arms around her friends. “I’m really happy for you,” she admitted softly.
“Thank god,” Tamaki breathed.
“We love you,” Mirio said, squeezing her gently.
“I love you guys,” Nejire said, finally letting herself smile. After all, even if the fruits of her labor had spoiled, they were her best friends. Besides…
Nejire drew back, genuinely smiling at both of her friends before letting the smile transform into a smirk. “At least I won’t have to watch you guys pine anymore.”
“Hey!”
