Chapter 1: Big Fish
Chapter Text
Alastor was reading the newspaper at his desk when Charlie entered. “Morning, sweetheart!”
“Hi.” She sounded grumpy as she flopped in her desk chair.
“Did someone wake up on the wrong side of the bed?”
“Basically.” Charlie pulled out her phone and turned it up. There was a loud beep and then a shrill voice began speaking.
“Heeeeeey Char-Char! It’s Madison Hollingsworth. I was just calling to invite you to our class reunion! What have you been up to? You’ve been MIA since your dad kicked you out for making a fool of yourself! KIDDING! But really, I do hope you’ll come! It’s next week and I can’t WAIT to introduce you to my fiance! Bye char-char!”
Alastor looked as though he’d smelled something bad. “Ugh.”
“I know, right? Madison always loved making me feel like shit. I’ve got to start coming up with a reason I can’t go before calling her back.”
“Why wouldn’t you go?” Alastor asked.
“Uh, because all of those people are terrible?”
“Exactly! They’re terrible! So wouldn’t it feel wonderful to show up and show them how well you’re doing?”
Charlie snorted. “Sure, I’m doing great. Single. No kids. Estranged parents. Failing hotel. Unofficial laughingstock of hell.” She rubbed her temples.
“Surely that’s not truly how you see yourself?” She jumped as Alastor was suddenly right beside her.
“Why not? It’s the truth. Anyway, I have better things to focus on than Madison Hollingsworth.”
~~~~~~~~~~
Rosie looked at Alastor curiously. “What’s going on with you? You’re letting your finger get all pruney.”
“Whoops!” Alastor pulled out the finger from his cup of tea and popped it into his mouth. “I’m afraid I’m a bit distracted by something. Charlotte received a phone call from some horrible harpy she went to school with inviting her to some sort of reunion. She doesn’t want to go because she feels like a failure.”
“A failure?! No way!” Rosie scoffed.
“I know. I just wish there was a way I could make her feel better.”
Rosie gave him a sly smile. “You’ve got a soft spot for the princess.”
“That’s slander, Rosie! Really, I’m more bothered by the lack of respect. She’s the princess of hell, after all!”
“So why don’t you go with her? You’re great at making other people feel small! Show those assholes that she deserves some respect!”
“Not a bad idea, Rosie. Not a bad idea…”
A few days passed and Charlie was working late by herself when her phone rang. “Hello?”
“CHAR-CHAR!” Crap. She should’ve paid more attention.
“Madison! Hey! I’ve been meaning to call you back.”
“Oh don’t worry, your fiance already confirmed that you were coming! Quite a big fish you’ve got hooked, huh? The radio demon!”
Charlie could’ve crushed her phone in the palm of her hand.
“He did, did he?”
“We can’t WAIT to meet him! I just wanted to call and make sure you got the itinerary I sent! Check in and the mixer is Friday night. Saturday will be events at the country club with the reunion ball that night, then a goodbye brunch on Sunday! I’ve gotta go, but I can’t WAIT to see you! Bye Char-Char!”
Alastor was reading in his room when his shadow suddenly jumped and began gesturing. It was pointing towards the door in a panic. Odd.
“ALASTOR!” There was a pounding on his door. Ah, his shadow had been trying to warn him. He opened the door with a bright smile.
“Hello, dear! To what do I owe the pleasure?”
“What did you DO?!”
“I’m afraid you’ll have to be more specific.”
“How about calling Madison and saying I was coming to the reunion? Oh, scratch that, that WE were coming to the reunion! Me and my FIANCE, the radio demon!”
“Ah! You’re here to thank me! It was hard to tell by your angry shouting. You’re welcome, dear.”
He saw literal fire in Charlie’s eyes. “I’m FURIOUS with you, Alastor! I didn’t want to go to this stupid reunion, and now I have to go and lie my way through it! Why the fuck would you do that?! Is this your idea of some kind of a sick joke?!” He seriously hadn’t anticipated her reaction. He felt awful when he saw her tear filled eyes. “I’m just going to call Madison back and tell her the truth.”
“Charlie, wait-“ he grabbed her hand, surprising them both. She looked at him, waiting for an explanation. He realized he was just kind of holding her hand and dropped it. “Bear with me, dear. I don’t do this sort of thing very often.” He straightened his jacket and stood tall. “You are a person that I tolerate.”
“Oh boy, this is NOT off to a good start.”
“Hush, I’m trying. You are a person whose feelings matter to me. I don’t like it when someone hurts those feelings. Therefore, I intend to go with you and hurt the individuals that have hurt you.”
Charlie blinked at him. “Ok, your heart is in the right place, and I appreciate that. But I think hurting people would kind of send the wrong message.”
“I think it sends a very clear message. If someone hurts you, they have to answer to me.” Alastor’s voice crackled and his dials began to spin. Then he returned to his regular smile. “I’ll agree to put a pin in slaughtering them for now, BUT we’re going to that reunion and those imbeciles will see what a beautiful, brilliant woman you are.”
Charlie couldn’t keep the grin off her face. “Aaaaaw, Al! That’s so sweet!”
“It is NOT sweet. I’m simply ensuring that they’re giving you the respect you deserve.”
“Sure, sure.”
“I’ve enlisted the help of a few individuals to make sure you’re ready for this weekend. We’ll meet with them tomorrow. In the meantime, we need to get our stories straight.”
“Stories?”
“I’m your fiance, remember? How long have we been together? How long have we been engaged? Do we have a wedding date? These are the things we need to nail down. Do you have any plans this evening?”
“No, just coming to yell at you. That was all.” Charlie smirked.
“Well now that that’s been checked off the list, let’s get to work!”
~~~~~~~~~
“No. Hideous. I hate it. This is SHIT!” Velvette groaned. “Remind me what we need.”
“Um, I don’t really NEED anything, I can just wear something I already have. Not that I don’t appreciate your help!” Charlie smiled.
“Ugh, don’t ever say something that stupid again. NEXT!”
Charlie was standing in Velvette’s studio, a place she never expected to be. They’d formed a shaky alliance with the Vees, but she wondered why Velvette had agreed to help her. “Hey Velvette?”
“What?” Velvette snapped.
“Thank you for helping me with this. I know we’ve not always gotten along-“
“Don’t be thinking we’ll be braiding each other’s hair and having pillow fights. When I heard the reason you needed some clothing, I was on board. I’m a petty bitch and I LOVE to get revenge by looking hot. If you really want to impress them, name drop me. You can call me a friend on this ONE occasion, alright?”
Charlie grinned and nodded. “These are beautiful dresses.”
“I know. Does Alastor like any certain color on you?” She snapped her fingers and Charlie was in her underwear.
“Um, no? I don’t think so?” She made a feeble attempt to cover herself.
“Come on, there’s got to be something that makes him rip your panties off.”
“What?! No, no, no! We’re just friends.”
Velvette looked up from her design book. “What?”
“We’re just friends. He’s just helping me.”
Velvette snorted and rolled her eyes. “Are you seriously that dense? He’s got it bad for you. At every overlord meeting he just won’t shut the fuck up about you. It’s cute in a pathetic sort of way.”
“We’re just really good friends.”
“Whatever. I’m gonna make you look so hot that your ‘good friend’ will want to jump you in the hallway.”
Velvette had finished taking her measurements and said she’d send over a wardrobe of clothing before Friday. The next stop had been to see Rosie.
“Velvette may know how to dress you to turn some heads, but if you wanna look classy, you come to aunt Rosie.” Rosie smiled and handed Charlie a dress. “Fitting room is right back there, doll.”
Alastor was looking at the jewelry case and seemed lost in thought.
“Watcha looking for, Al?
“We need engagement rings.”
“No problem, I’ve got something that’ll look really nice for a low price.”
“No. I want to get something really nice.”
Rosie looked at him questioningly. “For the weekend?”
“If she’s to be my fiance, there’s no way she’d walk around with any old ring on her finger. It has to be perfect.”
“I really don’t think anyone will pay that much attention to it.”
“I will. And Charlie will. What about that one?” He pointed to a particularly sparkly looking ring.
“Tiffany, two and a half karats. Circa 1920s. Comes with a hefty price tag.”
“I’ll take it.”
“Alastor, it’s over 50 g’s!”
“I’ll take it. She deserves the best.”
Rosie was mumbling under her breath as he moved down the jewelry counter.
“Hey guys? Can one of you zip me up?”
“Coming, doll!” Rosie headed to the back while Alastor continued perusing the jewelry counter. He was eyeing a diamond bracelet when he heard the click of heels. “Well?”
Alastor turned around and a loud screech of static startled them all. He opened his mouth and there was a blast of swing music. He quickly shut it and simply gave Charlie a thumbs up while she and Rosie snickered.
She was in a red silk dress that seemed to be sculpted to her body. It was fitted and clung to her in all the right ways. The straps hung off her shoulders and she had ample cleavage that had seemingly appeared in the last ten minutes.
“I love it, but I’m just worried about walking and dancing since it’s so tight.” Charlie did a slow turn and Alastor’s brain was effectively fried.
“Oh that’s no problem. Quick adjustment aaaaand: voila!” Rosie had used her magic and altered the dress, changing the bottom from being form fitting to having a slit that went up to mid thigh. “Ugh, you’ve got legs for days. Might as well show them off!”
“Much better!” Charlie stuck out one of her long, toned legs and Alastor was transfixed. He made himself look away and found Rosie smirking at him.
Oh, she knew EXACTLY what she was doing.
“You look lovely, dear. If you’ll excuse me, I’m going to browse.” He had to get out of there. He returned to the jewelry counter and began selecting things he wanted to get for Charlie.
If he was being honest with himself, (something he didn’t care to do) he LOVED the idea of spoiling her. She worked so hard trying to help everyone else, even if it was at her own detriment. He’d lost track of the nights he brought her dinner because she forgot to eat, or rousing her after she fell asleep on her desk. And he knew she’d had a tough time since her split with Vaggie, despite how hard she tried to hide it. So this weekend he was going to spoil and pamper her the way she deserved.
He’d sent her to look at record albums while he paid for the items. He knew she would object and protest if she saw how much he was spending. “I’m not gonna turn down a sale, but I think this is nuts.” Rosie shook her head as she rang him up.
The next day, Angel had taken her for a mani-pedi and Alastor was manning the front desk. A large package arrived and he noticed the V logo. There was an envelope on the top with his name on it. He opened it and pulled out the letter curiously.
“Alastor-
Don’t let the Princess look at this stuff before you go. You and I both know she’ll say it’s too much and want to pack her own shit. I’ve literally supplied everything down to her knickers (which happen to be very easy to rip off, just FYI) so don’t let her bring any other clothes. She’s gonna look hot as fuck. Don’t be a pussy and make a move before somebody else does, and they will, because she’s going to be smoking hot. “
Alastor rolled his eyes. The woman thought she knew everything! He did want to peek in the box, but figured that would be improper, so he simply took it to his room and tucked it away. When he came back downstairs, he saw Charlie and Angel entering. Charlie was walking strangely, with her legs wide and stiff. She mumbled a hello to Alastor and headed upstairs.
“Is she alright?”
“Oh yeah, she’ll be fine.” Angel smirked.
“What happened?”
“While we were at the salon, I talked her into getting waxed.”
“Oh my, I’ve heard that’s quite unpleasant. She was walking strangely, it must’ve been very painful.
Angel grinned and snorted. “That ain’t why she’s walking like that. She just got her first bikini wax.”
“I’m afraid I don’t know what that is.”
“The areas a bikini would cover. Ya know.” Angel pointed at his crotch and Alastor’s eyes widened.
“WHY?! My god, that sounds barbaric!”
“Because I happen to know for a fact that the swimsuit Velvette sent is a bit skimpier than she’s used to, so she needed to be ready. You ok, strawberry? You look like you’re gonna pass out.”
“You shouldn’t be discussing these matters with me.”
Angel just laughed his way up the stairs and Alastor shuddered. That sounded like it should be a form of torture.
Alastor waited at the bottom of the stairs with his one measly suitcase and checked his watch. They really needed to leave soon. He heard a grunting sound and saw husk carrying a stack of luggage. “I ain’t a damn pack mule! Gonna throw out my back.”
“I’ll be happy to massage it for ya, Husky.” Angel purred. Husk gave him the middle finger in response.
“Where’s Charlie?”
“She’ll be down in a minute.” Angel replied.
“-My number, and my backup number, and I also included the number for the resort, so if you have ANY questions-“
“Charlie, it’ll be fine.” Vaggie smiled and reassured her. “Go have a good time.”
“Please don’t forget to still do the group exercises! Angel will use my absence as an excuse! Also-“
“Just gooooo!” She and Vaggie entered the lobby and there was a screech, a blast of jazz, then a high pitch frequency that made them all cover their ears.
“Apologies.” Alastor cleared his throat. “You look lovely. Are you ready to go?”
Charlie was in a SHORT black strapless dress and tall heels that made her legs look even longer. Her hair was nearly curled and pushed to one side, and her lips were ruby red. She was the most stunning creature he’d ever seen.
“Thanks, Al! Alright, bye guys! I’ll call you every ten minutes!”
“It’ll be FINE, toots! Go make all those assholes jealous.” Angel gave her a quick hug.
“Come along, dear! Our ride is waiting.” Alastor escorted her outside and she was surprised to see a limousine.
“This is waaaaay too much.” Charlie cringed.
“Nonsense! We’re a power couple. We should arrive in style.”
“I’m already dreading this.” Alastor opened the door for her while an imp loaded the suitcases.

Chapter Text
Once they were inside the limousine, Alastor turned to face Charlie. “I took the liberty of procuring rings for this weekend.” He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a box. “This is yours.”
“Oh, Al! Yes! A thousand times yes!” Charlie dramatically clutched her chest as Alastor looked panicked. “Al, I’m kidding.”
“Not that I wouldn’t want to-“
“Al, I’m just teasing you.” Charlie smiled.
“Oh! Alright. Anyway, here is your ring.” He opened the box and her eyes bugged out.
“Holy shit!”
“Your hand, please.” She extended a shaky hand and he slid the ring on.
“I’m gonna hope this is costume jewelry.”
“It is not. It’s a Tiffany ring from the 1920’s, two and a half karats.”
“Noooooo way. This is way WAY too fancy, Al!”
She tried to slide it off and he placed his hand over hers. “It is what you deserve.”
“Al, if I wear this all weekend I’m going to constantly be worried about losing it.”
“I suppose I’ll just have to hold your hand to ensure it stays on.” He gave her a charming smile that made her blush.
“Thank you for doing this. Madison is SUCH a bitch. She tormented me in school. I don’t like most of these people, so it’ll be nice to show them that they didn’t tear me down.”
“Do remember, I’m more than happy to slaughter them!”
“I’ll keep that in mind.”
They arrived at the hotel and Charlie wrinkled her nose. “Of course she’s hosting the reunion here. Her parents own this hotel chain.”
The limo driver opened her door and then Alastor was right there to offer his elbow. They walked into the massive lobby and over to the check in desk. The hotel was dripping in opulence with crystal chandeliers, high ceilings, and priceless artwork.
“Welcome to the Hollingsworth hotel. How may I help you?”
“We have a reservation under the name ‘Hartfelt.” Alastor smiled at the woman behind the counter. Charlie whipped her head around and looked dumbfounded.
“You’re on the 13th floor, here are your room keys. Your luggage will be sent to your room.”
They headed towards the elevator and Charlie was still stunned. “Hartfelt?!”
“Yes.” Alastor pushed the button and seemed unbothered. The doors opened and they stepped inside.
“Al, I’ve known you for YEARS now and never once have I heard your last name!”
“I like to keep an air of mystery about me.” He winked.
“Literally everything else about you is a mystery!”
“Au contraire, ma chéri!” They exited the elevator. “I’d argue that you know me better than anyone.”
“What about Rosie?” Charlie countered.
“She knows certain facts about me. But she doesn’t know ME.”
“What?”
Alastor frowned at the rectangle in his hands. “I thought this was a key. How am I supposed to unlock the door with this? Do I shove it in the crack of the door?”
“Here, let me show you.” Charlie took the key and touched it to the lock. It blinked green and then unlocked the door.
“Well isn’t that the bee’s knees! How does it work?”
“I have no idea. Of course, you could always just walk through it if you forgot your key.”
Charlie’s eyes widened as they entered the room. “Holy crap! It’s HUGE!”
The hotel had plush white furniture, including a sofa and armchair, a massive bed, and a kitchenette. Alastor took off his suit jacket while Charlie went to check out the bathroom.
“OH MY GOD!” Charlie gasped. Alastor was about to come to the rescue when she came out with a handful of things. “LOOK AT THE TINY SOOOOOAPS!”
“What?”
“Hand soap! Face soap! Shampoo! Conditioner! Lotion! LOOK AT ALL THE LITTLE BOTTLES! Oh my GOD, we need to get these for our hotel!!!”
“Perhaps we should finish the upstairs suites before purchasing tiny soaps.” He couldn’t help but smile at her excitement. “Are you ready to head down to the reception?”
“I think I’d rather stay here and play with the tiny soaps.” She uncapped one of the bottles and sniffed it. “Oooooh!”
“Come on. We’re about to make our entrance as a power couple! But before we do, I have something else for you. While you look absolutely beautiful, I thought perhaps you could use a bit more sparkle this evening.” He pulled out a longer, thinner box. He opened it and revealed a delicate gold chain with a ruby pendant, as well as matching earrings.
“Tell me these aren’t real.” Charlie eyed the jewelry and then him.
“Of course they’re real! You deserve only the best. Turn around please.”
“But it’s just for a weekend! This is waaaay too extravagant.” She shivered as Alastor’s hands brushed against her neck.
“These aren’t just for the weekend. I purchased them for you, and do you know why?”
“I assumed it was to look good in front of my classmates.”
“Well, that too, but no. I bought them because I knew you’d never purchase them yourself. When’s the last time that you bought something for yourself, just because you wanted it?”
“Uuuuuuum…” she genuinely couldn’t think of the last time she’d bought something for herself. “Oh! I bought that stapler that looks like a cat.”
“That was work related.”
“Then I don’t know!”
“Exactly. So I thought I’d spoil you a little. And this is an extremely rare occurrence for me, so appreciate-OOF!” He was nearly knocked off his feet when Charlie turned around and slammed into him, hugging him tightly. He awkwardly patted the top of her head. “Alright, enough of that. Put your earrings on and we’ll go.” He smiled down at her, feeling a little giddy at her reaction.
Charlie grinned at him in the mirror as she fastened the earrings. “You’re gonna have to get over that. I’m gonna hug my fiance. And maybe plant a big ol’ smooch on you.” She giggled, then saw the terror in his eyes. “Al, it’s ok. I’m teasing. I won’t do anything that makes you uncomfortable.”
“No! That’s not it. I’m afraid I’m woefully inexperienced.” He could feel a stupid blush on his cheeks.
“Wanna practice?”
“I beg your pardon?!”
“If you kiss me for the first time in front of people and you look terrified, it’ll be kind of a red flag.”
“Right. You’re right. I suppose I didn’t think this through. Shit.”
Charlie’s eyes widened. Alastor rarely swore. “Al, it’s ok. No one is going to demand that you kiss me. You can just hold my hand.”
“No! I’m your fiance. I should kiss you.” He straightened his tie. “Alright, go.”
“Go?” Charlie snorted. “It’s not a race!”
“Well I don’t know how to begin!”
“You could start by coming a bit closer?”
“In the bathroom?” He looked skeptical.
“Oh, right. Ok, I’ll come to you!” She examined her hair one last time and walked towards him. He flattened out against the wall like she was going to attack him. Even his ears were flat against his head. “Easy, Al. It’s ok.”
“I feel like such a fool!”
“You’re not. It’s ok. You don’t have to do something you’re uncomfortable with.”
He couldn’t exactly explain that he wasn’t uncomfortable about kissing her. He was worried that he wouldn’t want to STOP kissing her. Alastor had never experienced attraction to anyone, and now the rug had been yanked out from under him. Apparently his body was trying to compensate for the 90 or so years of physical attraction he should’ve experienced, because now he felt like he was losing his mind. And Charlie, sweet Charlie, was looking at him with such concern. And she was so goddamn beautiful and CLOSE.
“I…I’m not uncomfortable. I just feel like a fish out of water. Could you do it?”
“Only if it’s what you actually want. You don’t have to force yourself to do anything, Al.” She gently reached out and touched his arm.
Uh oh.
Charlie yelped as Alastor surged forward, slamming her into the wall and kissing her roughly. Charlie was experiencing several things at once: confusion, a little bit of fear, and arousal. How the fuck was he so good at this?! She hadn’t been kissed in a long time, and with Vaggie, she had to be the dominant one. She let out a whimpering moan, and Alastor was pressed against her. Then in a flash, she was standing alone and he was clear on the other side of the room, looking panicked.
“Apologies.”
“For what?” Charlie asked.
“Well, first for being so forward, and second for messing up your makeup.”
“Shit!” Charlie ran into the bathroom and saw her smeared lipstick. “Al, you’d better come check your face.”
“Why would I need to-“ he appeared beside her and gasped. Well this was an unusual sight indeed. His hair was a mess and red lipstick was all over his face. “Oh my.”
“Here, let me.” Charlie grabbed a tissue and began wiping his face. He was frozen in place and transfixed as she gently removed the stain. “There! Might wanna fix your hair.” He was still staring at her in the mirror as she fixed her makeup and hair. “Ready?”
“What?”
“To go?” Charlie gestured to the door.
“Right! Yes, of course. Now, before we go, how comfortable are you with improv?”
“Are you kidding?! I LOVE improv!” Charlie grinned.
“Excellent. Let’s get into character and go.”
Charlie’s heart began beating harder as the elevator descended towards the lobby. She was dreading seeing these people again. She felt like an awkward teenage girl all over again. She jumped when Alastor took her hand. “You’ll be fine. Remember what I told you about a smile?” He winked as the doors opened. There was a sign pointing them in the direction of the reunion mixer. She stood tall and put a smile on her face as she approached the table. “Hi there! Charlie Morningstar. This is my fiance, Alastor.”
“Welcome! Here are your name tags.” They were each handed a tag and Alastor snorted at his as they walked in.
“What?”
“My name tag says ‘morningstar’s plus one.’ That simply won’t do.” He snapped his fingers and changed it. It now read “the radio demon.”
“Was that necessary?”
“Yes.”
“You couldn’t just put ‘Alastor?”
“Nope! Because they need to remember who I am and what I’m capable of.” He chuckled darkly.
“Al. It’s a cocktail mixer, let’s keep murder and mayhem off the table.”
“Then it sounds rather boring, don’t you think?” He smirked at her annoyed expression. “Fine, dear.” He looked up and groaned internally. “There’s an obnoxious looking blonde headed this way.”
“Fuuuuuuck.” Charlie groaned. It was showtime! Alastor did enjoy acting, so he’d made up a character: a man who absolutely adored his soon-to-be wife, but with the confidence of a man raised in wealth and power. Honestly, that was the hardest part. These people were practically born with a silver spoon. He’d had to claw his way through life, then make his way to becoming a powerful overlord in death.
“CHAR-CHAAAAAR!”
“Madison! Hi!” Charlie plastered her smile on.
“It’s been sooooo long!” Madison hugged her tightly. Ah yes, Madison Hollingsworth. The queen bee of the mean girls, now intent on faking niceties. She was rail thin with a mass of white blonde hair, a too tight dress, massive eyelashes, and clawed nails.
“And this must be your fiance!” Madison smiled at Alastor.
“Pleasure to meet you.” Alastor gave her a polite nod.
“I was SHOCKED when I found out he was your fiance, char-char! Talk about a mismatch, am I right?” Madison was already getting digs in.
“Oh I couldn’t agree more! I have no idea how I got so lucky. She’s certainly much better than I deserve.” Alastor looked at Charlie so lovingly that her stomach did a flip flop.
“Oh, there’s my fiance! Let me introduce you- oh! Re-introduce you.” Madison gave her a venomous smile.
Charlie turned and felt her heart stop. “Seviathan?!”
“Charlie! So good to see you! You’re looking more beautiful than ever!” Seviathan embraced her. The crackle of static made them all jump.
Oh, Alastor knew EXACTLY who this motherfucker was. His picture still hung in the lobby. And one quiet evening, Charlie had told him all about the love of her life who broke her heart.
And he had exactly five seconds to let go of her.
Charlie stepped back and looked at him with concern. “Apologies. My frequency has been on the fritz lately!”
“A pleasure to meet you! I’m Seviathan Von Eldritch.” The slimy green demon extended his hand with a sneer.
“Alastor. The radio demon.” His voice had gotten deeper and static-y. A sharp nudge from Charlie brought him back. “I’m Charlie’s fiance.”
Seviathan looked genuinely shocked. “Oh! I had no idea.”
“Show them the ring, sweetheart!” Alastor grinned. Charlie bashfully extended her hand.
“Wow! That’s quite the rock.” Seviathan chuckled. “Go ahead, cupcake, show them yours.” Alastor felt Charlie bristle beside him.
“Isn’t it STUNNING? He had it made just for me!” Alastor thought it looked quite tacky, with as many diamonds crammed onto it as possible.
“Wow! That’s beautiful.” Charlie nodded.
“Anyway, it’s so good to see you guys, I hope you have a FABULOUS weekend! We’ll see you around!” Madison led Seviathan away and he cast a lingering look at Charlie.
“Is there a bar? Because I’d like to start drinking.” Charlie groaned. “Oh!” Alastor had turned her around and pulled her close.
“Do you want a bigger ring?” He looked oddly intense.
“What? No! Why?”
“She was obviously trying to one-up you. I can get you a better ring. One with so many diamonds-“ now he looked surprised as Charlie brought her finger to his lips.
“I love this ring, despite the insane price tag I’m sure it came with. And honestly? Hers kind of looks like she got it out of one of those gum ball machines with the prizes.”
Alastor chuckled. “It was rather tacky, wasn’t it?”
“Money can’t buy taste.” Charlie shook her head and looked up at him. “I’m proud of you, by the way.”
“For what, dear?”
“For not ripping Seviathan’s head off. I know you wanted to.”
“Was it that obvious?”
“Why do you think she dragged him away?” Charlie smirked. “Come on, I was serious about the bar.”
After they’d gotten their drinks, they found a table to stand at (what’s the point of a table with NO CHAIRS?!) and watched the other guests. “I see two more of Madison’s cronies. That’s Melissa on the left and Mindy on the right.”
“Oh look, a high school version of the Vee’s!” Alastor chuckled.
“Basically. But maybe a bit worse. The Vee’s never stole all my clothes while I was in the shower in the gym, leaving only the mascot uniform, which I had to wear until I could get my clothes back.”
Alastor looked horrified. “They did that to you?!”
“No! They did that to…um…a friend of mine.” Charlie’s cheeks were burning.
“I believe it happened to a friend of mine too.” He smirked at her.
“See the tall guy over there in the blue suit? I had SUCH a crush on him!”
Alastor wrinkled his nose. “Why?”
“Back in the day, he was movie-star handsome.” Charlie sighed with a smile.
“He must’ve been in a terrible accident since then, the man is practically a Picasso.”
“Al!”
After a stiff drink, Charlie felt confident enough to mingle a little. Most of the people didn’t acknowledge her, either on purpose or because they literally didn’t remember her.
“Alright, enough of this.” Alastor straightened his tie and walked up to the closest group of people. “Why HELLO there!” All the people jumped at his voice. One man went running, abandoning his date. “SUCH a pleasure to be meeting you! An absolute pleasure!”
“Um, hi. Did you go to school here?” One orange demon asked him.
“I’m a sinner, my good man. I’m here with my fiance, Charlie Morningstar. Oh, Charlie!” She was giving him a panicked look and he just took her hand and brought her over.
“Hi guys. It’s been a long time.” Charlie smiled awkwardly.
“Wait, you’re THAT Charlie Morningstar?!” One of the women asked.
“Yes?”
“You look so different! I’m Kelly, we had homeroom together.”
“Good to see you!”
“Wow, Charlie. You’ve certainly grown up.” A tall demon was giving her the once over.
“I mean, yeah, we kind of all did!” Charlie laughed.
“Yeah but YOU…you look…” the demon looked up and was met with Alastor’s terrifying gaze. “You look older. No, wait! Not older in a bad way. Older as in mature! Not that I’m saying you’re mature like you’re old-“
“Kevin, shut the fuck up!” The green demon to his left smacked him. “He’s the fucking radio demon! He’ll slaughter you!”
“Luckily for Kevin, I’ve taken the night off from slaughtering. My sweetheart asked me to be on my best behavior, so I am.” He booped Charlie’s nose. “Otherwise I would exact my revenge on all those who bullied and tormented her.”
“OOOOOOOK, nice to see you guys, we’ll catch up later!” Charlie dragged Alastor away. “What did I tell you?!”
“What? I didn’t harm anyone! I just implied that I was willing to!”
“Oh my god.” Charlie rubbed her temples. “Do you think we’ve been here long enough?”
“I suppose so. No one else you’d like me to intimidate?”
Before she could answer, a male voice spoke from behind her. “Charlie?!”
Charlie turned around and gasped. “Oh my god! Mike! It’s so good to see you!” Charlie squealed and hugged the man.
Alastor cleared his throat. Charlie still clung to Mike’s side but smiled up at Alastor. “Al, this is Mike, one of my ONLY friends in school. Mike, this is my fiance, Alastor!”
“Oh wow, it’s a pleasure to meet you! Are you the radio demon?” Mike stuck out his hand.
“That’s correct.” Alastor shook his hand and sized him up. He was conventionally attractive, tall and slim but with wide shoulders and a nice smile, that was annoying. He had a past history with Charlie AND she was happy to see him. That was three strikes for poor Mike already.
“Mike and I were on the tennis team in highschool!” Charlie grinned.
“I’m a pro, now! Do you still play?”
“No, but I should! I miss it.”
“What about you, Alastor? Do you play?”
“Oh yes, I just ADORE the sport!” Alastor grinned at Mike. Charlie looked like he’d just sprouted a second head.
“Well then, we’ll CERTAINLY have to play together tomorrow!” Seviathan’s voice chimed in. “Madison and I were the best on the team. How about a doubles match?” Seviathan grinned as he joined the group.
Before Charlie could protest, Alastor responded. “We’d be delighted!”
“It’ll be great, Mads booked the entire country club for the weekend so it’ll just be everyone that’s here for the reunion. There’s golf, tennis, swimming, a spa, you name it!”
“That sounds wonderful indeed!”
“It sure does, can’t wait! I think we’re going to head out for the night, we’re pretty tired from traveling. But it was so nice to see you guys! Can’t wait for tomorrow!” Charlie’s face was beginning to ache from smiling as she dragged Alastor away.
“Why are we leaving in such a hurry?” Alastor asked.
“Because you already volunteered us for a doubles match with people I can’t stand, and I don’t need you signing us up for anything else!”
“Smile, dear. Your ex is watching and you don’t want him to think we’re having a spat.”
“Oh we’re totally having a spat, because-MMPH!” Alastor had leaned down and captured her lips. She was breathless when he pulled away.
He leaned in to whisper in her ear. “I need you to act like I just said something terribly naughty to you.”
Charlie grinned up at him. “Do it! Because I seriously can’t imagine that.”
Alastor stepped closer and rested his hands on her hips and gave her a confident smile. “Every man in this room was jealous that you were on my arm. And thanks to my superb hearing, I heard PLENTY of things about you.”
“Bad things?!” Charlie looked worried.
“Oh, quite the opposite. One man said, and forgive me for saying something so inappropriate, that your behind looked like a juicy apple he wanted to take a bite of.”
Charlie’s face turned bright red. “Oh my god!”
Alastor laughed. “I’m kidding, doll. Well, partially. What he actually said was that your ass was much better than it used to be, but that has a certain inelegance, don’t you think?”
“Ugh, let’s go.” She began walking out the door.
“He’s right, you know! You do have a rather shapely posterior!” He grinned and spoke a bit too loudly, getting some looks. He chuckled and followed after her.
Chapter 3: Close
Summary:
Alastor is going to go mad, being so close to Charlie.
Chapter Text
“Kelly seemed nice. She just mostly ignored me in school, she wasn’t mean.” Charlie was removing her makeup in the bathroom. “I think I’ll try to talk to her more this weekend.”
“That’s wonderful!” She heard a strange sound and came out to find Alastor making up the couch.
“What are you doing?”
“It would be improper of me to sleep in the same bed with you, so I’m making up the couch.”
“Don’t be silly, Al. Look at the size of that bed! I think we could both sleep sideways and not touch each other. That would be weird, but you know what I mean! Plus, if it really bothers you, we can always make a pillow wall.”
Alastor looked unsure. “You wouldn’t be uncomfortable?”
“Nope!” Charlie walked over to the large box with the V on it. “I’ve been putting off opening this, but I need pajamas. Velvette literally wouldn’t let me pack any clothing. Let’s see what she picked.” Charlie opened the box and began pulling things out. “Oh no, NOT happening. I need to go shopping tomorrow.”
“Oh come on, it can’t be that bad.” Charlie threw something at him and he dived out of the way like it was a hand grenade. He picked up the scrap of fabric and frowned, turning it every which way. “Alright, I’m stumped. What is this?”
“My swimsuit.”
Alastor’s jaw dropped. He looked at the tiny fabric and back to Charlie. “To wear??? In front of people???”
“Yep.”
“Oh absolutely not. No way.”
Charlie looked surprised. “What?”
“You’re not wearing this tomorrow! It’s indecent!” He should’ve known by the gleam in her eye that she’d taken it as a challenge.
“Oh, I’m wearing it. I’m wearing the hell out of it.” She dug through the box some more. “Oh come ON.”
“What now?”
“I think this is what I’m supposed to sleep in.” She held up a small silk thing. “Very fancy for pajamas. Is this gonna bother you?”
Would it bother him? No. Would it drive him mad? Perhaps a little. “I’ll be fine, dear, we’re going to sleep anyway.”
“I gotta admit, I’m very curious about your pajamas. Is it like one of those old timey gowns with the nightcap and the half burnt candle?” Charlie asked as she took her pajamas into the bathroom.
“Exactly how old do you think I am?” He answered with a smirk.
“I don’t know! I don’t know what people wore and when they wore them.”
“What if I told you I slept in the nude?”
“Hey, to each their own! I do, sometimes. Just depends on what I was doing prior to that.” Charlie giggled and walked out of the bathroom. “Did I leave my hairbrush out here?”
PANIC.
Panic consumed him entirely. Because Charlie was in a very short red silk nightgown that had a sheer cutout on the side, with delicate lace covering it. The top part left very little to the imagination, as it was low cut and seemed more like a brassiere. This wasn’t pajamas, this was lingerie, and he was currently in heaven and hell at the same time.
“I’ve gotta thank Velvette when we get back, I don’t have anything this nice. I’ve always been pretty practical when it comes to clothes. But sometimes it’s nice to wear pretty things.” She smiled to herself as she braided her hair, completely unaware of the fact that Alastor was about to throw himself out the window. “Do you have a side preference?”
“No.” He managed to answer.
“Then dibs on the left side!” She ran towards the huge bed and jumped on it, flopping down. “Holy SHIT, this mattress is amazing!”
Legs. Too much leg. Too long and toned and wonderful and stretched out across the bed. He needed to pull himself together. He headed into the bathroom to get ready for bed.
Charlie had crawled under the covers and was staring at the ceiling. She figured her ex would be there, but that he’d keep his distance. Of course he was engaged to Madison. They could go live in snobbery together. And now they had to play tennis with them? Ugh. But she knew she had to, because if she backed out it would seem like she was upset and that wasn’t going to happen. She was going to be confident, poised, and-
“Penny for your thoughts?”
“FUCK!” Charlie scrambled to sit up. “Sorry, I zoned out for a minute there.”
“Quite alright. These are my pajamas, by the way. Live up to your expectations?” He grinned and gestured to himself. He wore deep red silk pajamas with an A embroidered on the shirt.
“Somehow, this makes more sense for you than the nightcap and candles.”
“So what’s bothering you?” Alastor got into the other side of the bed.
“Who says something was bothering me?”
“Oh come on, now. You think I can’t tell when something is bothering you?”
Charlie turned on her side to face him. “Seeing Seviathan was harder than I thought it would be. It just reminded me of how much he hurt me. I felt like a brokenhearted teenager again, and I hated it.”
“But you’re not a brokenhearted teenager. You’re a strong, confident, beautiful woman. And he was certainly noticing that earlier! You’d think with your fiance present, he’d be smart enough not to ogle you. Especially when your fiance is a terrifying overlord.”
“Thank you for behaving earlier.” Charlie gave him a soft smile.
“You’re very welcome. I’ll have you know that it was very difficult at times.”
“Do you even play tennis? Because I can’t see that.”
“I’ve played once or twice. That should be enough.” He shrugged.
“Al!”
“What?”
“Since you volunteered, I assumed you knew how to play!”
“I do know how to play! I just don’t do it often.”
“Ugh, this will be humiliating if they kick our asses!” Charlie groaned.
“They won’t. I’m certain of it.” Alastor grinned.
“Don’t use magic to cheat.” Charlie pouted.
“Do you want to win or not?”
“Yes, but fairly!”
“Well, I’ll do my best, but I make no promises.”
Charlie yawned and stretched. “Thanks for coming with me, Al. Goodnight!”
“Goodnight dear.”
Charlie was a very sound sleeper. He’d expected to be too anxious to sleep, but hearing Charlie breathing beside him was surprisingly comforting. He’d fallen asleep and woken up sometime later with something on him. The thing that was on him ended up being Charlie’s leg, which she’d slung over him. His first instinct was to panic and throw her off of him. He took a deep breath and calmed himself. This was Charlie, it was fine. He gently grabbed her leg (which was silky smooth) and removed it from him. That lasted all of five minutes. Charlie was, apparently, a clingy sleeper. He’d finally stopped fighting her, and now she had an arm and a leg thrown over him and her face pressed into his chest. He still struggled with being touched, so he was uncomfortable at first. But Charlie was so soft and warm, and she had the faintest scent of apples. He couldn’t resist taking a whiff of her hair, which seemed to be the source of the apple scent. He’d never been this close to her, so he took the time to really look at her.
Her lashes were long and dark and fluttered gently while she slept. Her skin was like porcelain, but up close she had a tiny smattering of golden freckles on her cheeks. He’d never noticed that. Eventually he grew tired and settled down to sleep, but not before cautiously putting his arm around her. Huh. This was nice.
When Charlie woke up the next morning, she was more well rested than she’d ever been. She snuggled down into the mattress with a smile. Then it occurred to her that she was snuggling something warm. Her eyes fluttered open and she was surprised to find herself snuggled up against Alastor. His arm was around her and she was cradled against his chest. She’d never seen Alastor look so…relaxed? Normal? Absolutely adorable? Alastor was always such a question mark. He had a permanent smile on his face so you could never truly get a read on his feelings. He was usually always “on” in regards to his persona. Now he was completely at peace, and oddly comforting. She snuggled into him, determined to enjoy it while it lasted, and fell back asleep.
~~~~~~~
“Charlie, it’s time to get up.”
She grumbled in response and turned over. “Chaaaarlie.”
“She’s sleeping.” She grumbled.
“You have to get up, sweetheart. Breakfast is ready.” It was then she realized that she was alone in the bed. She turned over face down into the mattress and pulled the covers up.
“Alright, let the record show that I tried to wake you up the nice way.” Suddenly the covers were whipped off of her and the curtains were flung open, letting in the bright morning sun.
“Fuck! I’m blind!” She squinted against the light.
“Are you going to get up now?”
“Yeah, once my corneas stop burning.” She rubbed her eyes and sat up. “What time is it?”
“Eight, dear.”
“Woah, I never sleep this late.” She shuffled out of bed.
“Neither do I. You were incorrect, by the way.”
“About what?”
“That we’d have enough space between us. You, my dear, are a clingy little sleeper. Like a koala.” He smiled and booped her on the nose. “I finally peeled you off of me a half an hour ago.”
“Hey, I’m not entirely to blame here! I woke up earlier and YOU were holding ME.” She reached up to boop his nose and he caught her hand.
“It was easier than fighting you.” He smirked.
“Sure, sure. But I think you liiiiiiked iiiiit!” She teased him as she looked for her hairbrush.
“That’s SLANDER, Miss Morningstar! By the way, if anyone asks, I think I’ll take your last name.”
“How progressive of you.” She headed over to the little table by the kitchenette. “Did you order room service?”
“Oh no, absolutely not. I have quite the refined palette. I cooked breakfast.”
“Aw, that’s so-“ and glanced down at the table. “I don’t mean to be rude, but I have to ask-“
“It’s sausage, darling. Not made from people.”
“Just checking!”
After breakfast, Charlie headed to shower while Alastor read the paper. Of course she sang in the shower, she sang all the time. He did enjoy her voice though, and, to be completely honest, he was enjoying the domesticity.
He’d never been a conventional man, and had never had the desire to be one. He found other people to be exhausting and he had absolutely no intention of marrying or having children. Even in death, he’d never even considered settling down. But waking up with Charlie in his arms, fixing her breakfast, and hearing her sing in the shower was sending him into a tailspin.
He heard the shower turn off, and a few moments later, heard her disgusted sigh.
“Something wrong?”
“I’m gonna look so STUPID.”
“What do you mean?”
“I told Velvette that I needed some athletic wear, and she gave me a dress. I mean, I guess it has shorts underneath it, but still!”
“I’m sure you’ll look fine.”
He frowned as he heard grunting sounds, and then something clattering off the counter. “Shit!”
“Charlie?”
The bathroom door was pushed open and Charlie came out, breathing heavily. “Putting this on was more of a workout than tennis will be. I might need you to cut me out of it later.” She was in a skintight white tennis dress that was VERY short, and it seemed to be backless. “Also included is a stupid looking visor and tennis shoes.”
“Don’t worry, darling, becaaaaause-“ he snapped his fingers. “We’ll look stupid together.”
“Oh my GOD!” Charlie burst out laughing. Alastor was now also wearing a white tennis outfit. He had on white shorts, a white polo, and a visor. “You have no idea how much I wish you’d show up on camera.”
“Not a soul outside of this resort shall hear about this, understand?” Alastor gave her a teasing grin.
“That’s ok. It’s gonna live rent free right here forever.” She pointed to her head with a smile. “Let’s go look like a pair of idiots.”
Charlie was surprised when Alastor took her hand the second they were out of the car. “Aaaaaaw!”
“Oh, hush.” Alastor couldn’t keep the smirk off his face. “I’m concerned that you’ll be ogled by every man in the club. They need to be reminded that you are not available.”
“Jeez, possessive much?”
“Oh, very! You see, someone like myself, who doesn’t really care about or like other people, would be VERY possessive over someone they cared for.”
Charlie blinked at him. “What?”
“Let me put it in a different way. Think of a lonely explorer who finally discovers a treasure trove. The explorer would be VERY protective of it.”
“What you’re basically saying is that I belong to you and you don’t like to share.” She was surprised when he stopped suddenly. “Oh!” His hands rested on her hips and he’d turned her to face him. And he was very, very close.
“Be careful saying things like that, darling.” He practically purred.
“Like…what?” She was looking at him with wide eyes.
“That you. Belong. To me.” His face came closer to hers with each pause. Her heart started pounding, and she knew by the smirk on his face that he’d picked up on it. She hoped that was the only thing he’d picked up on, because now she was turned on.
“Would…you like that?” She felt like she couldn’t breathe being this close to him. His hands dug in on her hips.
“Hey guys!”
FUCK! Alastor wanted to behead whoever had interrupted them and had to stop himself. It was that Kelly woman and Charlie looked happy to see her.
“Kelly! Hi!” Charlie waved and walked over. What the FUCK was happening to him?! His brain was just screaming MINE MINE MINE! She’d basically set him on fire when she’d said those words. And now she looked SO delicious in her little tennis dress…
Well this was confusing. He wanted to devour her, but not in his typical fashion…
Notes:
My head cannons of Alastor is that he has fancy pajamas, red silk with an A on them, and that his kryptonite is sleepy Charlie.
Chapter 4: Doubles
Summary:
Charlie said Alastor couldn’t use magic to win the game. She didn’t say anything about using it to repeatedly hit her ex in the balls.
Notes:
Sorry this took a bit longer! I had a super awesome experience lately. If you’re interested in my personal life, I’ll tell the story in the end note.
(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)
Chapter Text
Alastor finally snapped out of his Charlie-induced haze and joined her and Kelly. “Lovely to see you again!”
“Hey, Alastor! Charlie tells me you guys are going up against Seviathan and Madison. Watch out for his drop shot.”
“Thank you for the tip!” Alastor smiled politely.
“I’m going to be camped out at the pool today, you should join me later!”
“That sounds great!” Charlie replied. “I’ll catch up with you later!” She turned back towards Alastor and extended her hand. “Come on, you don’t want people to forget I’m yours.” She gave him a cheeky grin.
“You little minx.” He smirked and took her hand. “It’s not polite to tease, you know.”
“Oh I know. But I will literally NEVER have this opportunity again, so you can bet I’m gonna keep it up.”
“Why is that?”
“Come on, Al. I know this is an act. Once we’re back at the hotel, you’ll be back to broadcasting screams and scaring Sir Pentious.” Charlie chuckled. “But it’s ok! I’m having fun. I like having a fiance that’s protective of me. Let’s go find the tennis courts!”
Alastor thought about her words as they walked through the country club. She was right. Here, things were different. There was no angel dust to make perverse jokes and innuendos, no angry little moth girl to stare him down…It would never work back at the hotel.
But what if he wanted it to?
More importantly, would she?
“Hey, Sev and Madison are up ahead. Go ahead and lay one on me!”
Alastor looked at her in confusion. “Lay what?”
“Kiss me!”
“Oh! Alright.” He leaned down and gave her a chaste kiss.
“Not what I was thinking of, Al.” She grabbed his hand and yanked him off the path to the side of a building. “You have my permission to grab my ass.”
“I beg your pardon?!” Charlie tugged him downwards by his collar and began kissing him. She threaded her fingers through his hair and he let out a contented sigh. She’d deepened the kiss, which he hadn’t been expecting, but was now perfectly fine with it. God, he felt like he was on FIRE. His hands drifted down her waist and he thought about what she’d said. No, he couldn’t, he was a gentleman. Then Charlie made the decision for him and grabbed one of his hands, moving it downward.
Uh oh.
She yelped as he dug a claw into her soft flesh. “Sorry, dear.” He grinned and resumed kissing her.
“You’re gonna leave claw marks on my ass, you-HIIIII!” Charlie shoved him back and smiled brightly.
“Are we interrupting?” Seviathan smirked.
“Apologies, I tend to get carried away. I’m positively feral around Charlie.” Alastor grinned.
“Oh I totally get it, I get that way too with Mads.”
“When have you EVER been feral?” Madison sounded snippy.
“We got kind of wild that one time! We were at this party, and we totally snuck off to do it.” Seviathan looked smug.
“It was our engagement party and it was at our house.” Madison rolled her eyes.
“Sometimes I just can’t even THINK clearly with this one nearby!” Alastor slapped Charlie’s behind, making her jump and glare at him. “But she’s just as bad as me. You know, worse, I think. I told her she looked lovely and she just dragged me over here and attacked me!”
“Alastor!” Charlie hissed.
“Woah, really? That doesn’t sound like the Charlie I know.” Seviathan smirked.
“I didn’t know her during her school days, but I can assure you that this enchantress can make me feel things I-“
“TENNIS!” Charlie smacked him and blurted out. “I’m just dying to play! So let’s do that!” She grinned a little too wide, looking a bit like her fiance.
“Let’s do it!” Seviathan took Madison’s hand to walk to the court. Alastor stuck his hand on Charlie’s ass. “Not NOW!” She took it and held it by her side while he chuckled.
Alastor was stretching and waiting for Charlie to return. She’d gone to use the bathroom and should’ve been back by now. He headed in the direction of the locker rooms to check.
“-you’re gonna want to rotate when you hit the shot, your opponent will never be expecting it.”
“I think I’ll be fine, I was on the tennis team too.”
Clearly Seviathan wanted to die today. He had his arms around Charlie, attempting to show her how to swing properly.
“Just remember your form-“
“Seriously, I’ve got it.” Charlie sounded annoyed.
“Didn’t you hear the girl?! She’s got it!” Alastor made them both jump.
“Just giving Charlie some tips before the game.” Seviathan smiled innocently.
“We’ll be just fine. Ready to play, doll?”
“Yep!” Charlie smiled brightly and gave him a quick kiss before they headed onto the court.
Technically, Charlie said no using magic to cheat to win the game. She didn’t say anything about using it to harpoon her ex.
“FUCK!” Seviathan dropped his racket and collapsed to the ground, his hands going to his crotch.
“Oh my! I’m terribly sorry, are you alright?” Alastor asked with mock concern. Seviathan gave him a thumbs up as he tried to catch his breath.
“Don’t worry, I’ll try to be more careful!”
Oh he was careful alright.
He couldn’t hit Seviathan with EVERY shot, that would be too obvious, but he was still going to get plenty of hits in. Charlie and Madison did the majority of the playing, while alastor targeted a different kind of ball and Seviathan tried not to throw up.
“Babe, you’re not HELPING!” Madison was getting angry.
“I’m sorry, I’m just a little SORE!” Seviathan snapped back.
“MAN UP!”
Alastor pretty much stood off to the side and let Charlie shine. She really was an excellent tennis player, and quite lovely to watch. He was hyper focused on a bead of sweat running down her neck to her chest when a ball pelted him in the side of the head.
“Alastor!” Charlie ran over to him. “Are you ok?!”
“Just fine, love! I’m much too hard-headed to be hurt by that.” Alastor grinned.
“Hopefully we’ll be done soon. Just hang in there!”
The game went on another ten minutes and he managed to target Seviathan one last time, before the demon missed the winning shot on purpose and doubled over in pain, desperate to end the torture.
“WOOHOO!” Charlie ran over to Alastor and threw her arms around him. He picked her up and gave her a twirl before setting her back down. “Excellent job, darling! You’re quite skilled at tennis.”
“Don’t think I didn’t notice you harpooning Sev on purpose.” Charlie’s arms were around his neck as she smirked up at him.
“I have NO idea what you’re talking about! I’m afraid tennis just isn’t my game, my aim is terrible.”
Charlie let go of him and wiped the sweat off her brow.
“Fuck, I’m hot.”
“Absolutely, especially when you’re flushed with the thrill of victory!”
“I meant from running, Al!” Charlie felt a blush on her cheeks.
“I stand by my statement.”
Madison had stormed off without a word. Seviathan gave them an awkward smile and wave. “Good game, guys! I’ll see you later.”
“I hope he can still have children.” Charlie whispered as she waved.
“Not a big loss if he can’t.”
“Al!”
“A dip in the pool sounds AMAZING right now. Wanna swim?” Charlie asked.
“I’m not much of a swimmer, dear. I’ll be perfectly comfortable holding down a chair in the shade.”
“Oh, that’s ok, we can do something else!”
“Nonsense! I’m looking forward to relaxing. I can’t think of the last time I did that.”
Alastor would not be relaxing. He would be watching every man at the pool like a hawk.
And for good reason! Charlie went into the locker room to change, and even she was shocked by the bikini. She’d never really considered herself to be hot or sexy, but in this swimsuit? She felt like she belonged on a magazine! When she exited the locker room to go to the pool, she felt oddly confident.
It’s a cheesy trope, but you know how, in the movies, the man sees his love interest looking stunning as she walks towards him in slow motion? That’s what was happening to Alastor. Charlie wore a red string bikini that left little to the imagination. A demon walked straight into the wall while ogling her as she passed. No, that wasn’t acceptable!
“Al! What are you doing?!” Alastor had rushed up to her and wrapped a towel around her.
“You can’t wear that…that…swimsuit doesn’t seem adequate!”
“Ex-CUSE me?”
“I can turn it into something else! How about I do that?”
“Back off, Al. This is a perfectly acceptable swimsuit, and I think I look good.”
“Good?! That is the understatement of the century!” Alastor released his death grip on the towel he’d wrapped around her. “In life or death, I’ve never seen ANYONE look like you do right now! I didn’t even know it was POSSIBLE for one to look so perfect!”
“Aaaaw!” Charlie grinned.
“I’m not good at this. I don’t know how to do this.” He ran a hand through his hair.
“Do what?”
“I….i don’t know. Go swim, I’ll be just fine in that chair over there.” He looked for somewhere to rest his hand, and settled for patting her on the head.
He needed to get it together. His instincts were telling him to grab her and take her somewhere that no one else could see her. He didn’t want people ogling his…
His what? Alastor sighed. He had accepted that it was quite possible that his feelings for Charlie bordered beyond friendship…of course, having someone’s tongue in your mouth and your hands on their bottom made it quite difficult to not think of them in a different way.
Aha! That’s how he could rationalize it. He was simply method acting! By acting as her fiance, he’d tricked himself into having feelings for her. That’s all it was!
Of course, there was a small part of his brain that told him that was utter bullshit.
He selected a nice chair under a large umbrella to remain in the shade. He attempted to sit back and relax, but that wasn’t happening. With a snap of his fingers, he had a novel in his hands. Of course he wouldn’t be reading it, instead, keeping his eyes on Charlie.
About twenty minutes passed, and he saw Charlie getting ready to exit the pool. He flipped a few chapters into his book and tried to look interested.
“That pool felt great! But now I’m ready to toast my buns.”
“I’m sorry?”
“I’m gonna get some sun. Could you hand me that towel? Thanks!” Charlie began drying off. “How’s your book?”
“It’s very good, quite interesting.”
“It must be, since you’re reading it upside down!” Charlie grinned. Alastor couldn’t believe he’d done something so stupid.
“Did you have a nice swim?” He smiled and tried to change the subject.
“Yep, and now I’m gonna get some sun. Can you do me a favor? And you can say no!”
“What is it, dear?”
“Could you rub some sunscreen on my back?”
Alastor sat up straighter. His ear twitched and Charlie had to suppress a smirk. “You want me…to rub sunscreen on you?”
“Yes?”
“With…my hands?”
“I don’t know what other body part you could do that with, but yes, your hands. If it bothers you-“
“No! Not at all!” He answered a bit too quickly.
“Thanks, Al!” Charlie bent over to dig in her bag and he swore she was doing it on purpose (she was). “Here you go!” She handed him the tube.
Alastor gulped. He could do this. It was just sunscreen. On her almost naked body. Oh god.
Charlie jumped when he made contact and he withdrew immediately. “It’s not you! It’s just cold.” She giggled. “It’s fine.”
He began rubbing the cream on her shoulders and massaging them slightly. She let out a tiny contented sigh and it drove him wild. She gasped as his hands dug in harder, massaging knots that she didn’t even know she had. She certainly wasn’t going to turn it down! She honestly hadn’t intended to let the little sound she made slip out, but the second she did, she knew she’d pushed a button. It was barely audible, but Alastor didn’t miss it with his excellent hearing.
She let out a tiny, quiet moan.
Before she could even comprehend what was happening, she heard a throaty growl, and then she was pressed up against the side of the juice bar, out of sight from the majority of the pool crowd.
“Oh!” There was something hard against her back. Was that what she thought it was? He moved his hips slightly and her eyes widened. Yep. Al had a boner.
Alastor groaned and just sort of…held Charlie. He was having the internal struggle of a lifetime. The primal part of his brain wanted to yank that tiny little string on her swimsuit and bend her over the juice bar. The rational part of his brain was screaming NOOOO! Dangerous territory! Lights and alarms were going off!
Charlie couldn’t help but think about that survival book she’d read when she decided to try camping. If a predator was interested in you, it was best to stay still and not make any sudden moves. His hot breath ghosted on the skin of her shoulder and she shivered. Her heart raced as one hand found purchase on her hip. She leaned back slightly, silently begging him to DO SOMETHING. Then suddenly, she was standing alone and Alastor was about ten feet away.
“You should get some sun! It’s a lovely day. Just lovely. So lovely, in fact, that I’m going to…go play golf. Alright? Will you be ok by yourself?”
“I’ll be ok. Plus I see Kelly just sat down. I’m going to go sit with her.”
“Good, good. I’ll catch up with you later. Goodbye now!” Shadows spread beneath his feet, and then he was gone.
Charlie put a hand against her pounding heart. What the fuck was THAT? Was she losing her fucking mind? This was ALASTOR! Alastor who she quite enjoyed kissing and had the newfound ability to make her heart race and her panties a liiiiittle damp.
How was she going to make it through this weekend?
Notes:
Ok so what you may or may not know about me is that I am an artist semi-professionally! I want to be a character designer, and I’ve slowly picked up a few jobs over the last six months. I had the privilege to attend an art expo in Nashville called “animation y’all!” And it was AMAZING.
If you were a Disney kid, or like me, are a Disney adult, you’ll understand how starstruck I was. You guys, these are the people that DREW MY CHILDHOOD. Mark henn, Aaron Blaise, Tom and Tony Bancroft, Tim hodge…
Mark henn animated pretty much every princess from Ariel onward. Tony Bancroft created kronk, pumbaa, and cogsworth. I won’t give you their entire biographies, but you should look them up.
It was a great event, and I’m fortunate that my health held up and I was able to go. It was so inspiring meeting both veterans of the industry and up and comers! It was a very good experience for me all around, but especially mentally. I met my kind of people and learned that I CAN make it in the industry!
Chapter 5: You or me
Summary:
Alastor wanted everyone to see how beautiful and incredible Charlie was, until they actually did and now he wanted to choose violence.
Notes:
A bit of a short chapter, but I wanted to give you SOMETHING and I’m not going to tackle the ball (ha, almost sounds sportsy) in this chapter.
Chapter Text
Why the hell had he said golf?! Alastor HATED golf! It was so dreadfully boring. Whack the ball, go find it, whack it again. What was the point? But he’d told Charlie that’s what he’d be doing, so he trudged towards the golf course. He was in the pro shop purchasing a set of clubs when he heard a familiar voice.
“Alastor! I didn’t know you played!”
Alastor grimaced and turned around. “Every once in a while! Charlie was sunbathing with a friend, so I decided to get in some tee time.”
“We were just about to start golfing! Why don’t you join us?” Seviathan grinned. Alastor couldn't figure out his angle. Charlie wasn’t here, so he couldn’t attempt to woo her, and he was fairly certain Seviathan wasn’t pursuing a friendship.
Though you know what they say: keep your friends close, and your enemies closer.
“Sounds wonderful! I’m ready when you are!”
Alastor had been in hell for quite some time now, and he thought that he was familiar with every kind of pain and torture. Nothing could’ve prepared him for this.
“They assured me that they’d planted ryegrass. Now it’s grown and you know what it is? Bluegrass!” Someone Alastor was 75% sure was named Chad spoke.
“Oh my god, your yard will stick out like a sore thumb!” Another demon, Trevor, added.
“I’d demand they replace it. The bluegrass will just look tacky.” Seviathan shook his head as he swung his golf club.
Alastor wondered if he could hit himself in the head hard enough to allow him to leave this nightmare.
“Dude, you know what we should do?!” Trevor asked.
“Kill ourselves?” Alastor mumbled.
“What?”
“Nothing! You were saying?” Alastor smiled innocently.
“We should spike the punch bowl tonight like we did in school!”
“Dude, that would be so sick!” Chad laughed like an idiot.
“Oh, grow up. That was so long ago! We’re mature adults now.” Seviathan rolled his eyes.
“Speaking of mature, some of the ladies are looking fiiiiiiine!” Trevor grinned. “I can’t decide who looks the hottest.”
“Dude, hands down, it’s Charlie Morningstar.”
Apparently Chad had a death wish.
“Seriously, bro! Where the fuck did that body come from?” Trevor replied.
At least Seviathan was smart enough to look nervous. “Gentlemen…”
“Dude, didn’t you used to bang her? Maybe you could hook up again and have a true reunion!” Chad chortled.
“Guys, seriously. Shut up.” Alastor felt a sense a pride when he saw a bead of sweat appear on seviathan’s forehead.
“Come on! Did you see her ASS? Man, I’d love to-“
“SHUT THE FUCK UP YOU IDIOTS! The radio demon is her fiance!”
Trevor and Chad paled as he smiled widely at them. “Please, continue objectifying my future bride! Now what would you like to do with the love of my life?”
It had been about an hour, so Charlie decided to try and locate Alastor. She tugged a T-shirt and shorts over her swimsuit and headed towards the golf course. She spotted his bright red head in the distance and began walking towards him. When she saw his smile stretch past its normal width, she took off at a run.
“I didn’t mean to objectify her! I just said she was hot!” A demon was cowering in front of Alastor.
“ALASTOR!”
His head snapped backwards at an unnatural angle, then he saw her. It was an instant change. His terrifying demonic smile was replaced with a soft, loving one. “Hello, darling!”
“Charlie, do you remember Chad and Trevor?” Seviathan asked.
“I do! Nice to see you again.” She frowned as both men mumbled and looked at the grass. “I was coming to see if you were hungry. I thought we could grab something and go back to the hotel for a bit.”
“Sounds wonderful! Though I’m craving something besides food.” He winked and pulled her close. “Gentlemen, I’m the luckiest man alive! Well, metaphorically.” He slung an arm around her waist and grinned at the men. “I’m afraid I’m going to have to quit the game, I’d much rather go play another one.” He leaned down and gave Charlie a passionate kiss. She finally smacked him on the side of the head and he let go. “Sorry. Sweetheart. Got a bit carried away. We’ll see you gentlemen later!”
As soon as they were out of sight, Charlie wheeled on him. “What was that?!”
“Well, they called it golf, but personally I’d call it torture.” He replied with a smirk.
“Not that! You looked like you were going to beat them to death with a golf club!”
“Oh, THAT. It doesn’t concern you.” He began whistling and walking away.
“Ex-CUSE me?” Charlie stomped over in front of him.
“It’s over with now! Totally fine.” He patted her head and tried
“What did they say?”
“Doesn’t matter.”
“Alastor.” She snarled.
“Fine, fine! Trevor asked who they thought was the most attractive woman at the reunion. Chad said it was you. He and Trevor then began discussing your body and I had to remind them that they are NOT allowed to ogle my fiance!”
Charlie gaped at him. “I’M going to beat you with a golf club!”
“I’m sorry?!”
“Do you remember your reasoning for coming to this reunion?” She crossed her arms.
“Yes, to help you!”
“You wanted to let them see what a beautiful, brilliant woman I was. That’s a direct quote. You took me to get new clothing to look better and feel more confident. And now that they’re saying that I’m attractive, you’re a heartbeat away from manslaughter.”
“Technically it’s not manslaughter-“
Charlie held up a hand. “No. Don’t make light of this. If you’re just going to terrify everyone, you may as well go home. I want these people to get to know me, to get to know them! To have a second chance to see if any of them aren’t complete dirt bags! But no one is going to come in a five mile radius of me if you don’t chill the fuck out!”
“I told you that I wanted them to know what I’m capable of!”
Charlie took a step back. “Exactly. What YOU are capable of. So are you here for me, or for you? Because I need you to be here for me!”
Alastor was stunned. He looked at Charlie with wide eyes. “You…need me?”
“Of course I need you! This weekend is difficult for me. I need to know that you have my back, not that you’re going to snap somebody else’s. I need you to be here to support me. To make me feel like everything is going to be ok, and keep me from letting them make me feel so low again. I need you here with me, Al.”
He seemed to be frozen, and Charlie briefly wondered if she’d broken him. Then she wheezed as she was crushed against his chest.
“I’m sorry. Of course I’m here for you. Old habits, I suppose. But I promise that I will be the loving, supportive partner you need.”
Charlie briefly wondered if that applied outside of this weekend before she shoved those thoughts away. “Thank you. Now let’s go do something fun together! We’ve got some time before we have to go back and get ready for the ball.”
“You know, one of the imbeciles was raving about a place nearby that’s supposed to have a fantastic view and even better food. How about it?”
“That sounds great.” Charlie smiled up at him and took his hand.
Why did he feel like his stomach was doing a flip flop?
The imbecile had been right about the location. It was a tall tower with a restaurant at the top, and it had glass walls so you could see out. Alastor was basically walking on air.
She NEEDED him. SHE needed HIM. No one had ever needed him for anything. Well, occasionally he was needed to reach things that were on tall shelves, but not for something like this. She wanted him to be there, to supply comfort and support. It was like a light had suddenly been switched on.
Charlie looked up from her menu to find Alastor staring at her with a small smile. “What?”
“Hm?”
“You’re staring at me?”
“Apologies.” He continued looking at her with a dreamy expression.
“Ok, you’re starting to freak me out. What’s up with you?”
“Just wondering how I got so lucky.”
Charlie snorted and smiled. “You’re so cheesy. Save it for the ball.” She shook her head and looked back down at her menu.
Part of his brain was telling him to remember that it WASN’T REAL. The remaining part of his brain had been rendered useless because Charlie was sitting across from him and she looked so pretty. God, what was happening to him?
Chapter 6: To be or not to be
Summary:
Feelings come to a head and now they’re left to face them.
Notes:
I apologize for the relatively short chapter and how long it took to update. Life be life-ing
Chapter Text
Alastor should’ve known that when Charlie said she “only needed an hour” to get ready that it wasn’t true. He was laying on the sofa in their room, staring at the ceiling while Charlie did her makeup in the bathroom and sang something about a pink pony. “Charlie?”
“Ten more minutes!” she replied. Alastor decided to multiply that by 3 at the very least.
He finally heard the door open sometime later and sat up. “Ok, Al! You ready?” Charlie sounded excited.
“Ready to see how gorgeous you look!” He replied. He was surprised when he heard sultry jazz music playing. A long, toned leg came out of the door. It hooked on the door frame and slowly moved up, giving him a nice view of her whole leg, down to the dangerous looking red high heel. Alastor gave an encouraging wolf whistle and the leg went back in.
Then everything went dark.
Literally, because when Charlie came out of the bathroom in that dress, there was a squealing sound that pierced their ears, then shattered every lightbulb in the room.
“Whoops.” Alastor said quietly.
“I’m not sure how to take that.” Charlie chuckled and paused the song on her phone.
“God, you are….” he walked over to her and raked her eyes over her form. “Breathaking. Mind boggling. I can’t produce a single coherent sentence to tell you how gorgeous you look.”
“Aaaaal!” Charlie blushed and swatted him away with a giggle. He grabbed her hand and slowly turned her, then let out another whistle.
“You, Charlie Morningstar, are dangerous.” He purred.
“How’s that?”
“Because I’d sell you my SOUL right now to be by your side.” He put his hands on her waist and pulled her close while she giggled.
“You are by my side, silly.” She smiled up at him.
“True, perhaps there are other places I’d rather be.” He smiled seductively.
Charlie’s eyes went wide and he was afraid he’d overstepped. Then he realized that he hadn’t overstepped at all.
“Fuck it.” she mumbled.
“What? AH!” Charlie tackled him backwards onto the couch, practically attacking him with her claws. He didn’t mind one bit as they sunk into his back and he gripped her tightly by the waist. He thought that he was the only one that was going mad this weekend, but Charlie was kissing him within an inch of his life and basically riding his pant leg. She decided he wasn’t moving fast enough and moved his hands down to her ass once more. She must’ve known that was his new favorite feature of hers. He was vaguely aware of the sound of tearing fabric, but absolutely did not care as his claws dug into her flesh. She bit his lip and he let out a growl. They were practically humping like horny teenagers when Charlie’s phone started ringing.
“Ignore it.” Alastor whispered in her ear. They kept going as the phone played the whole ringtone. It immediately began ringing again and Charlie groaned.
“I should at least see who it is.” Then Alastor’s hands moved the thin band of her panties aside and she had no intention of moving. Only when the room phone began ringing did Charlie tear herself from Alastor. “Hello?” Her face immediately fell. “Angel, slow down. What? WHAT?” Alastor was on his feet and by her side in an instant. “We’ll be there as soon as possible.” She hung up the phone and turned to him with panic in her eyes. “The hotel is under attack.”
“FUCK!” Alastor felt a surprising surge of panic. “Stay here, I’ll take care of it.”
“Absolutely not!”
“You’ll be safer here!”
“Well that’s too bad.” Charlie slipped her shoes back on. “Take us there. NOW.”
Alastor sighed and knew it was pointless to argue. He took her hand and transported them to the hotel.
They appeared in the lobby just as an explosion rattled the building. “What’s going on?!” Charlie turned to Angel and Husk.
“I don’t know who they are or what they want, but they’re hellborn.”
“Hellborn?” Charlie looked to the front door.
“Charlie, don’t! CHARLIE!” She was running to the front of the building.
“EXCUSE ME! HEY!” Charlie ran out the front door, waving her arms. “COULD YOU TELL ME WHAT IT IS YOU WANT? I JUST GOT HERE AND I DON’T KNOW WHAT’S GOING ON!”
“WE’RE FROM THE GREED RING! WE’RE HERE TO ROB THIS ESTABLISHMENT!”
“DOES THIS HOTEL REALLY LOOK LIKE A PLACE WITH A LOT OF MONEY?”
There was a pause.
“VERY WELL THEN, WE’LL KIDNAP YOU FOR A RANSOM!”
Charlie pondered to herself. “COULD YOU MAYBE DO THAT ON MONDAY? I’M ACTUALLY OUT OF TOWN FOR MY REUNION AND I’M SUPPOSED TO GO TO A BALL!”
“TUESDAY WOULD REALLY WORK BETTER FOR US!”
“This is unbelievable.” Alastor shook his head. “I can take care of this.”
“No! They’re hellborn, Al. They can only be killed with angelic steel. All you’ll do is piss them off. Besides, I’ve met these people before. TUESDAY IS GOOD FOR ME, BUT I HAVE A MEETING IN THE MORNING. DO YOU WANNA DO LUNCH AND THEN KIDNAP ME?”
“WHAT ABOUT WEDNESDAY? MORNINGS ARE BETTER FOR US!”
Alastor was dumbfounded. He gestured to Charlie and looked at the others to see if they were just as confused. Angel shrugged, Husk was back at the bar, Vaggie was filing her nails, and Niffty was cleaning up rubble.
“HONESTLY IT’S SILLY FOR YOU TO COME ALL THE WAY BACK HERE! WHY DON’T I JUST CONTACT MY DAD AND TELL HIM TO SEND YOU MONEY?”
“WHY SHOULD WE TRUST YOU TO COOPERATE?”
“WELL YOU KNOW WHERE I LIVE IF I DON’T!”
“THAT’S A GOOD POINT!”
“JUST TELL DAD I SAID IT WAS OK!”
“WILL DO, SORRY TO BOTHER YOU!”
The demons she’d been yelling at gave a wave before driving away. “Ok, are we all good?”
“What the FUCK was that?!” Alastor was dumbfounded.
“I deescalated the situation and resolved it without violence. Well, on my part anyway. If they’re stupid enough to follow through and contact dad, that’s on them.”
“Great, thanks. Care to tell us why your ass is hanging out?” Angel asked with a grin. It was then Charlie realized she could feel a breeze.
“I…tore my dress. It was an accident.”
“That would be more convincing if strawberry wasn’t wearing your lipstick.”
“I…wanted to try it?” Alastor offered weakly.
“You two bonin’ when I called?”
“Absolutely not!” Alastor said at the same time Charlie said “we were getting there!”
“Right, right. Sorry to cock block you, or maybe I didn’t, cuz ya don’t seem to be on the same page.” Angel smirked. “You can go back to doing or not doing what you might or might not have been doing.” Charlie and Alastor looked confused. “Ugh, just go!”
Alastor took them back to the hotel room and Charlie was immediately on him again. “Charlie, wait!” He gently pushed her back. “We need to discuss this.”
“Discuss what?”
“This…this!” He gestured between them.
“What is there to discuss?”
“I…don’t think we should take things any further. They shouldn’t have gone this far.”
“Oh.” He saw Charlie’s expression fall.
“And that has nothing to do with you! You’re absolutely gorgeous and I was rather enjoying myself, but we have to continue working together after this weekend.”
“Right! Of course.” Charlie forced a smile.
“It just wouldn’t be very professional.”
“Got it. Yep! Hearing you loud and clear!” She gave him finger guns and awkwardly chuckled. “If you can fix my dress, I’ll fix my makeup and we can go to the ball and get this over with. Unless you don’t want to go, I can go by myself-“
“Of course I’m going with you.” Alastor smiled and snapped his fingers, repairing the rips in her dress. “Good as new!”
The elevator ride seemed entirely too long for Charlie. How could she have been so stupid? Of course he didn’t want anything more with her. He was just doing this as a favor. That was clear from the start, it was her fault for reading more into it. Finally they reached the lobby and she nearly crashed into someone while rushing out of the elevator.
“Hi! Charlie Morningstar and Alastor Hartfelt.”
Alastor was kicking himself. Stupid stupid STUPID! He’d seen the hurt in her eyes when he pushed her away, but he had to! She was far too good for him. He could never be the man she deserved. And he was a fool for thinking it could ever happen.
“Al?” Charlie got his attention.
“Yes?”
“Are you ready?”
“Of course! Right this way, my dear. It’s showtime.”
Chapter 7: Cinderella, except no one lost a shoe
Summary:
We take a look inside the minds of Charlie and Alastor, two idiots that want the same thing but don’t know how to get there.
Notes:
I think we are near the end! I never expected this to be a long story, so I think another chapter or two will do it.
Chapter Text
Charlie forced another laugh as some former classmate told a story about something she was barely listening to. All she could think about was how badly she’d fucked up. Had she misread EVERYTHING? She felt like something had shifted this weekend, and that maybe Alastor wanted her the way she wanted him. It was her own damn fault.
She knew who he was. She should’ve known that the radio demon wouldn’t want to be with her. Being with someone like her would hurt his image. He was known for being one of the most terrifying and evil overlords. That was everything Charlie opposed. It wouldn’t work.
She kept going over things again and again trying to figure out HOW she’d fooled herself into thinking it was real. How could she have been so naive? He was playing a role. But what was the point?
Reality hit Charlie like a brick wall. Why did she give a fuck about what any of these people thought? Why was she here, pretending to be something she wasn’t to impress people she didn’t care about, and would more than likely never see again? She’d hoped that she could get to know some of her former classmates as adults and see if maybe they weren’t all as terrible as she remembered. Most of them were. She looked up and saw Alastor looking at her with concern, his usual smile gone. Of course, who actually knew what was going on in his head?
Alastor wanted to slam his head against a brick wall. Stupid, stupid, STUPID! Why the fuck had he stopped things? He could tell he’d hurt her when he did, and that was the last thing he wanted to do. He figured that she was caught up in the heat of the moment and would deeply regret it, and their relationship as friends and business partners would be ruined. He couldn’t have that. He’d rather have her in his life in some way or another, rather than not have her at all. But had he actually done this for her?
He thought about their previous argument. Was he doing this for her, or himself? He didn’t like the answer. He realized that he’d selfishly chosen self preservation over Charlie’s feelings. He’d been concerned about what would happen to him. HE was afraid of losing Charlie, therefore HE stopped things from continuing, because he was afraid that he would end up hurting himself.
What had he done?
“Excuse me, but I need to steal my fiance away for a bit.” Alastor gave the group a charming smile and led Charlie away from them. “I need to speak with you.”
“Could we PLEASE do this later?” Charlie pleaded with him.
“No, because I’ve been a selfish asshole towards you, and I need to tell you that I-”
“Attention everybody!” Madison’s voice echoed through the room. “I want to thank you all so much for coming to our class reunion. And I have a special surprise!” That smile made Charlie feel anxious, and for good reason. “We took a vote, and we have an award for someone! This award goes to the person who has changed the most since our school days. Let’s give it up for the ugly duckling award winner, Charlie Morningstar!”
A large side by side picture of Charlie was projected on the wall. One side had her middle school picture, complete with braces and an awful haircut. The other side had a picture of her when she’d entered the ballroom. People were applauding and Madison was waving her towards the stage. “Speech! Speech! Speech!” the crowd began chanting. She could tell Alastor was furious. She made eye contact and shook her head no. Charlie went up to the stage and Madison handed her the microphone with a venomous smile. She turned to face the crowd. She was going to force a smile and a few generic nice words, but enough was enough.
“Thank you, Madison, for this award. By giving me this, I know that you’re just as big of a bitch as you were when we were in school.” The crowd gasped. “And all of you, with a few exceptions, made my school days a living nightmare. You tormented me and bullied me at every turn. Even this weekend, I’ve seen you whispering and giggling at me. Clearly some of you have never changed.” Charlie took a deep breath. “I didn’t come here this weekend because of the amazing times I had in school and the friends I made. I came here to show you all how well I’d turned out. But giving me this award helped me to realize that I don’t give a flying FUCK about what you guys think of me.”
The crowd began talking amongst each other and Madison moved up to take the microphone. Charlie held a hand out and stepped back. “I wanted to impress you, but for what? Your respect? That wasn’t going to happen. So what I AM going to do is offer you this: a chance to become a better person. I’m sure you’ve heard of my Hazbin Hotel. Well, our Hazbin Hotel, Alastor is my business partner. We’re not even engaged, by the way. He wanted to help me feel more confident and help me get through this weekend, but I’m getting off topic. You’ve heard of the hotel. And I invite you all to try something different.” There was scattered laughter through the crowd. “Raise your hand if you ACTUALLY had fun this weekend. Do you actually care about any of the people around you? Or do you care about what they think of you?” You could hear a pin drop, and no one raised a hand. “I’m here to tell you that it doesn’t matter what other people think. The only thing that matters is how you feel about yourself. If you look inside yourself and don’t like what you see, come to my hotel. Let me help you realize what an amazing person you are. I hope to see you there. Even you, Madison. I know you must really be hurting on the inside to be so cruel on the outside. I’m sorry I called you a bitch, by the way. Goodnight.” Charlie gave Madison the microphone back and strolled off the stage and out the back door.
Alastor dashed out the back door after her, but somehow she was gone. He used his shadow to look for her and couldn’t find her. How was that even possible?!
Charlie had a special ability she’d never told anyone about, not out of secrecy, but simply because it never came up. She could go home at any time. And by home, that meant the palace, even though she didn’t consider that her true home.
Lucifer let out a shriek as his daughter suddenly appeared in front of him. “Char char?!”
“Hi, dad.” She was looking at the floor and wasn’t sure what to say. “I-OOF!” Her father had thrown his arms around her.
“Look at you! You look so beautiful! Whatcha been up to? You really look like a princess in that gown! You look just like your mother. Have you gotten taller since-“
“DAD!” She finally had to interrupt him. “I know you have a lot of questions but I’m really tired. Can I sleep in my old room?”
“Of course, char char! It’s still your room! All your stuffed animals are there. Remember Mr. Marshmallow? Oh, and what was the name of that other one? I-“ he looked at his daughter and cleared his throat. “Sorry, I’m just excited. I haven’t seen my WIDDLE GIRL in AGES!” He squeezed her tightly again. “But we can catch up tomorrow. You want me to tuck you in? Read a bedtime story?”
“Um, thanks dad, but I’ll be fine. Thank you. I’ll see you in the morning.” Charlie forced a smile and headed up to her room while her father literally danced from excitement.
Charlie changed into a pair of pajamas that luckily still fit, removed her makeup, and crawled in bed. She turned on her side and clutched her stuffed bear (Mr. Marshmallow) against her chest and finally let herself cry. She cried because all of those people were just as awful as they were in school. She cried because Madison had used the event to humiliate her. She cried because she was mad that she felt like an insecure teenager again. But most of all, she cried for Alastor. She’d begun falling in love with a man that could never love her back.
If only she knew that her knight in shining armor was going to rip apart all of Heaven and Hell until he could find her and give her his heart.
Have you seen Ted Lasso dance? Because that’s exactly what I was picturing Lucifer doing.
Chapter Text
Angel and Husk were startled when Alastor had suddenly returned to the hotel looking for Charlie. Now they watched from a safe distance as Alastor performed some sort of elaborate ritual involving a hair from Charlie’s brush. Green mist surrounded him and began swirling faster and faster. Then there was a whooshing sound, the mist disappeared, and Alastor let out a scream of anger.
“What the fuck are you doing?!” Vaggie snapped from the bottom of the stairs.
“It doesn’t concern you!” He ran his hands through his hair and looked more panicked than Husk had ever seen.
“If you’re looking for Charlie and can’t find her, there’s a reason for that. I’ll explain if you calm down and tell me why you’re looking for her.”
“I’m searching for her because I was being an IDIOT and I rejected her! I rejected the best thing that’s ever happened to me, dead or alive! I ruined whatever relationship we could’ve had, and now I can’t FIND HER. She left quickly after the debacle on stage.”
“Wait, what happened?”
They listened to Alastor as he told them about the shit show of a ball, and now they stood in silence. “So we’re gonna get that Madison bitch, right?” Angel asked.
“No, because despite how much I’d like to RIP HER POISONOUS TONGUE OUT OF HER MOUTH, Charlie FORGAVE HER and would be furious with me if she were harmed.”
Heavy silence filled the room again. “You really care for her.” Vaggie said with a small smile.
“Of course I do! I adore her! I’d give my right arm to that woman if she asked! I more than care for her, I’m hopelessly desperately-“ there was a loud crackle of static. “It doesn’t matter. Why can’t I find her?”
“If she can’t be traced, that means she’s at the palace. It has a lot of strong protective magic around it. There’s no way for you to reach her.” Vaggie explained.
“I don’t accept that!” Alastor snarled.
“Well, you have to. There’s no way you’re getting in there. And you need to give her some time. She hates going there, but she did for a reason. She clearly wants to be alone and you need to respect that.”
Alastor didn’t say a word as he vanished into the void. He retreated to his room and tried to get ahold of himself. He’d never been this unraveled in his life or death. The thought of losing Charlie, of having hurt her, was absolutely killing him. He knew he had a long, sleepless night ahead of him.
Charlie woke up the next morning feeling like death itself. Her eyes were puffy and bloodshot from crying and a lack of sleep. She hadn’t taken her makeup off so she looked like she’d lost a fight. She put her hair in a loose knot on the top of her head and decided to get some breakfast.
“GOOD MORNING!”
“FUCK!” Charlie clutched her chest. Lucifer was smiling brightly and holding a breakfast tray. “You scared the crap out of me dad!”
“Sorry, char char! I made you breakfast! Chocolate chip paaaaancakes!”
She couldn’t help but smile at her dad. “Thanks, dad.”
“Breakfast on the patio?”
“Sure. Give me five minutes.”
“Great!” Lucifer dashed off and Charlie sighed. Was this what it was like when other people met her?
Lucifer was watching his daughter with a bright smile. “Soooooo. How are things?”
“They’re fine.”
“And what about Maggie? You guys doing good?”
“Actually we broke up-“
“OOOOH CHAR-CHAR! I’m so sorry!” Lucifer had wrapped his arms around her.
“…a year ago.”
“What? Seriously? How did I not know that?”
“Because we don’t talk?”
“Right. That. I’ve been a pretty shit father. I’m sorry, char-char. Wanna tell me why you’re here and so down in the dumps?”
Charlie shifted awkwardly. “There’s this guy-“
“I thought you were gay?”
“Bisexual, dad.”
“Right, right. Continue.”
Charlie told her father all about Alastor and their budding relationship (leaving out the awkward parts) and sat back with a sigh.
“Sounds to me like this guy didn’t think he was good enough for you. I’m not disagreeing, but I bet that’s where this is coming from.”
“I think he just got scared. I don’t know, it’s all such a mess. I didn’t want to go back to the hotel and deal with him until I knew what I wanted.”
“Want me to kill him for you?”
“DAD!”
“Just offering!”
“I just need some time and space to think about things. Thanks for breakfast, daddy. I need to be by myself for a bit.”
“Of course, sweetheart! Just gimme a shout when you need me!”
Angel was sitting at the front desk, just about to enjoy his morning coffee. As he brought the mug to his lips, he was slammed back against the wall by an unseen force. “What the FUCK?!” All the lights began flickering and a red mist filled the room.
“HOW DARE YOU HURT MY DAUGHTER!” A booming voice filled the room and Angel was scared shitless, then confused.
“Hey disembodied voice? I ain’t hurt anybody’s daughter!”
“ARE YOU NOT THE RADIO DEMON?”
“What? Fuck no! The name’s Angel Dust.”
At once the red mist disappeared and the lights returned to normal.
“Whoops! Sorry about that.” Angel was put back on the ground and a short man in a white suit stood before him. “I’m looking for the radio demon?”
Angel saw the big eyes and rosy cheeks. “Ooooh you’re Charlie’s dad! Hey there, short king.” Angel gave him a flirty smile.
“That’s me! Lucifer Morningstar. You know char-char?”
“Of course, she lets me live here. Real sweet kid. You’re looking for big red?”
“Yes, I need to speak with him.” Lucifer puffed his chest out.
“He stepped out for a bit, but you can wait here if ya want. Any chance you’ve got embarrassing Charlie stories I can tease her about?”
“Oh you bet I do!”
Husk had quietly witnessed the whole exchange and slipped off into the back office. He picked up the phone and dialed.
Alastor was having tea with Rosie when her phone began ringing. “This is Rosie, whaddya want? Yeah, he’s right here, hang on.” Rosie held the phone out. “It’s for you.”
“Ugh.” He detested cellular phones. He begrudgingly held it up to his ear. “What?”
“Hey boss, it’s me. Listen, we got company.”
“It’s a hotel, Husker. That’s the goal.”
“This is a courtesy call, jackass. Lucifer himself is here and looking for you.”
“…..I’m sorry?”
“Charlie’s daddy, the king of hell, is sittin’ here waiting for you. He just about choked out Angel.”
“Oh, wonderful. Thank you, Husker.” Alastor handed the phone back to Rosie. “I’m afraid I must cut our visit short. The king of hell is waiting to murder me at the hotel. It’s been nice knowing you, Rosie. Goodbye!” With a wave, Alastor disappeared into the void.
Chapter 9: Why is it always the bellhop?
Summary:
Alastor has to plead his case to the one man that doesn’t wanna hear it.
Notes:
Hi friends! I’m doing ok. I was very very sick for a few weeks, then I lost a close family member. I kind of shut down for a few days. Thank you so much for all your sweet comments.
I saw someone mention setting up a discord. If I did, is that something you guys would be interested in? It would be fun to chat outside of here.
Chapter Text
“I’m really glad she went to her reunion. It’ll be good for her to catch up with old friends!” Lucifer was sipping a cup of tea at the bar when Alastor reappeared.
“Old friends? Surely you’re not referring to any of those idiots at the reunion.” Alastor stood tall and looked down at Lucifer. “Your majesty.”
Lucifer looked up and cringed. “Oh, god no. Tell me you’re not the guy my little girl is hung up on.”
“I’m Alastor, the radio demon. A pleasure to be meeting you sir! An absolute pleasure.” Alastor forced a smile and extended a hand, which Lucifer looked at in disgust.
“Ok, CLEARLY Charlie has a brain tumor or is having some sort of mental crisis. You can’t possibly be the guy she’s in love with.”
“She loves me?” Alastor’s stomach had butterflies.
“She said he was tall, handsome, and powerful.”
“Which is obviously why you thought it was me.” Angel winked.
“Yeah, you make more sense. What the fuck is up with this guy? What’s with that smile?”
“She loves me!” Alastor grinned.
“We don’t ask that question, he always looks like that.” Angel replied.
“And that VOICE. Also I consider myself to be rather fashionable, and this is ENTIRELY too much red.”
“SHE LOVES ME!” Alastor startled them both. “Sir, I love your daughter more than I ever thought possible. Please, PLEASE let me speak to her.”
Lucifer grimaced. “Yeeeeeeeah I don’t think so. It’s nothing personal, I just think char-char can do a lot better than you.”
“You just specifically referred to me. That’s the definition of personal.”
“Ok, a lotta attitude coming from the bellhop right now.”
“I’m not the bellhop. I’m your daughter’s business partner.”
“Exactly. And I’m not sure she needs someone to encourage her to pursue this…thing.”
“This…thing? You mean your daughter’s passion project, that she devotes every ounce of her heart and soul to?” Alastor’s smile was growing. Husk quietly pulled Angel behind the bar.
“Exactly, she’s got much better things to focus on! Hopefully seeing her old friend Madison will inspire her to do something more with her life.”
“Sir, I can’t decide if you’re completely oblivious or just a total imbecile.”
Angel swiped a bottle of whiskey off the bar as he and Husk ducked behind it.
“Excuse me?”
“Madison Hollingsworth is a venomous harpy that takes joy in bullying and humiliating your daughter.”
“I know they had their differences a long time ago-“
“Do you consider yesterday to be a long time ago? When Madison dragged her onstage to accept an ugly duckling award?”
“Wait, what are you talking about?”
Alastor explained what had happened. “It’s my fault, I’m the reason she even went this weekend. And I wasn’t there for her like I should’ve been. If she doesnt want to see me now, that’s fine. I just want to know that she’s alright.”
“I don’t understand why she didn’t tell me any of this. She just said the reunion was fine.”
“Probably because she didn’t want to upset you. I wanted to tell her how proud I was of her for the way she handled it.”
Lucifer slumped in his seat. “They were mean to my little girl.”
“Yes. And I thought by going with her this weekend I’d help her to face them, but all I’ve done is mess things up.”
“Why didn’t you kill Madison?”
“Because Charlie wouldn’t want that. She forgave her.”
Lucifer made a noise of disgust. “She doesn’t deserve forgiveness!”
“I agree, but Charlotte’s heart is much bigger. It’s one of the things I love most about her. It’s what makes her special.” Alastor chuckled. “It’s incredibly frustrating at times. But in the end, she’s always right.”
Lucifer evaluated him. “I guess I can see why she likes you, if you put looks aside.”
“Somehow I’m lucky enough to be loved by her.”
Lucifer was quiet. “So what do you want from her?”
“What I want more than anything is her happiness, whether it’s with me or not. But I want to love her and treat her the way she deserves to be treated. And I want to spend every day making sure she knows how wonderful she truly is.”
There was a loud sniff from the bar. They all looked and saw two cat ears sticking out. “The fuck are you all looking at? It’s dusty down here.”
“Alright. You can come back to the palace. I don’t know if she’ll want to see you, but you can come.” Lucifer was looking at the ground.
“Thank you, sir.” Then the pair disappeared into the shadows.
“Aw man. That was anticlimactic.” Angel sighed and looked at husk. “You’re such a softy!”
“Shut it!”
Charlie was looking out the window of her old bedroom, forehead resting against the cool glass, when the radio alarm clock on her nightstand jumped to life.
“Good afternoon all you sinners and swingers! This is the radio demon with a VERY important broadcast!”
Charlie looked at her radio in confusion and flicked it off.
“You won’t want to miss this!” The radio turned on once more.
“Yes I do.” Charlie grumbled and unplugged it, only for it to immediately turn on again. “Oh come on!”
“This broadcast is extra special because it’s ON LOCATION! Yes siree, the radio demon is coming to you from the royal palace, home of the very princess that holds my heart in her hands! For the next twelve hours, I’ll be-“
Charles was going to go find Alastor and tell him to shut up. She whipped open her door and found him standing there, a bouquet of wildflowers in one hand and a glowing microphone in the other.
“I love you.” He blurted out, then felt a surge of panic. “Unless you don’t love me, and would prefer to return to our previous relationship, then I’ll just-“ his sentence was cut off as Charlie yanked him forward by his tie and kissed him. When she finally released him, he gave her a bright smile. “Am I correct in assuming that you return my feelings?”
“Yes! Of course I love you. I thought I’d just made things out to be more than they were.”
“You didn’t. Once again, I was only thinking of myself. I was terrified of getting hurt. I can’t promise that I won’t do it again, seeing as I’m a selfish bastard by nature, but if you’re willing to be patient with me, I’m willing to give you my heart. Literally, if you’d like! It’s not like it’s doing anything useful.”
“I appreciate the gesture, but please don’t give me any organs.”
“Should you ever change your mind, know that it and any other organs you’d like will be yours.” He picked up her hands and gently kissed her knuckles.
“You are so weird.” She grinned and embraced him. “Wanna come in? Wait, how did you get here?”
“CHAR-CHAR YOU KNOW THAT BOYS ARE NOT ALLOWED IN YOUR ROOM!”
Charlie stuck her head out in the hall and looked around. “Dad?!” Then she noticed a tall plant, seemingly wearing a top hat. “DAD!”
“Sorry, sweetheart, those are the rules!” The voice from behind the plant spoke.
“Dad, I can SEE YOU. And I’m over 300 years old!”
“No boys!”
“Oh my GOOOOOOD.” Charlie huffed and dragged Alastor into her room.
“You’d better leave the door open!” Lucifer was met with the sound of her door slamming shut. “Just this once you can close it, but I’ll be here! I’ll be right here the whole time!”
Notes:
Lucifer must refer to Alastor as a bellhop in every story, it’s the law.
Chapter Text
Charlie was standing at the front desk when Alastor came up behind her and wrapped his arms around her. “How’s my gorgeous girl today?”
“Hey!” She turned and kissed him. “Which one of these do you like more for the hallway carpet?” She held up two carpet swatches.
“Darling, I’m not sure those are two different shades.” He looked up at the front door as it opened and his mood immediately changed.
“Madison?!” Charlie was stunned. Alastor was tense and she squeezed his hand.
“Hey.” Madison looked at the ground and cleared her throat. “I owe you an apology.”
“That’s an understatement.” Alastor snapped.
“I’ve been a mega bitch to you. And you really didn’t deserve it. I’m sorry.”
“Wow. Thank you, Madison.” Charlie was surprised.
Alastor narrowed his eyes. “Lucifer spoke to you, didn’t he?”
“Yeah. Made some threats.”
“Oh. If you’re just here because of my dad-“
“No. I’m here because I can’t undo the past and I’d like to try to make it up to you. This isn’t really my thing, but what you’re doing here is special. I want to invest in your hotel. Maybe partner with you for some events?”
“Wow. That’s really generous of you.”
“I also thought you should know that I dumped Seviathan.”
“Oh! I’m sorry.”
“Don’t be. He’s a loser. I realized that he didn’t really love me. He wanted me to be Charlie 2.0.”
“Still, I’m very sorry. Um. Would you like to have lunch sometime or a cup of coffee?” Charlie asked cautiously.
“Actually? Yeah.” Madison crossed her arms and looked at the floor self consciously. “I thought about what you said, and you were right. I don’t care about those people, and I know they don’t care about me. Since I dumped Sev, they’ve all been tearing me to shreds. I’m so over it.”
“Believe me, I get it.” She smiled at Madison.
“Anyway, I’ve gotta go. Use this to get some better carpet or something. Those shades would look terrible with the wall color, unless you’re repainting. For the lobby I’d consider hardwood or marble tiling or something. It’s a high traffic area and easier to clean.” She saw Charlie looking at her in surprise. “I actually have a degree in interior design. I designed all our hotels. Seviathan didn’t want me to work after we got married. So stupid.”
“Your hotel was gorgeous! Would you consider doing our hotel? I don’t know what your fee is-“
Madison waved her hand dismissively. “Honestly I’d love to do it just to have something to do. I really enjoy it, you know? I would love to design your hotel! And it’ll be my gift to you. Consider it restitution for all the shit I gave you.”
A year passed and it was time to have a grand opening! There had been many clashes between Madison and Alastor (she refused to allow any antlers, taxidermied creatures, etc.) but Alastor had to admit that it looked pretty nice.
“I can’t believe it’s almost tiiiiime!” Charlie grinned as she entered the ballroom. “Woah! This is so pretty! Did Madison do this?” The decorations were classy and had Madison written all over it.
“She did! I asked for her assistance.” Alastor smiled at his girlfriend, hands behind his back.
“It’s gorgeous, but a little wedding-y with all the white.”
“I agree! I wanted you to get a little preview.”
“A preview? Of what?” She looked around at the gorgeous decorations. There were dozens of tables draped in white with elaborate centerpieces, fairy lights and white flowy fabric draped across the ceiling.
“For our wedding! Provided you’ll say yes.”
She turned and found him on one knee. “Holy fuck!”
“Charlotte Morningstar, will you marry me?”
“OF COURSE I WILL OH MY GOD!” Alastor let out an “oof” as she tackled him to the floor.
“I held onto this because I’m quite attached to it. I knew when I bought it a year ago that, in the unlikely event you ever actually married me, this would be the ring on your finger.” He slid the original engagement ring onto her finger. “Rosie thought I was nuts.”
“I thought you were nuts! You gave me a small fortune in jewelry.”
“What can I say? I love spoiling my lady. Everything was so stunning on you, though you were already stunning. They added a little sparkle.” He kissed his fiance (for REAL this time!) and beamed at her.
“What if….i just wore the jewelry and nothing else?” Charlie gave him a flirty smile.
“Well I think that would be the most beautiful sight in my life AND death!”
Notes:
Thanks for reading another one of my silly little stories! I encourage you to check out the others. “A simple favor” is what I’m working on at the moment. And an announcement: many of you have asked about hotel hell, and here’s what I’ve decided. I felt like I wrote myself into a corner on that one, so I’ll be deleting it and rewriting it. If you want to read the new version when it’s available, be sure to subscribe! Thanks for reading ❤️
