Chapter 1: Strike 1: purfifciation
Chapter Text
the interrupted date
Percy hadn’t meant for it to happen. He and Annabeth had been on their way back from their sixth month anniversary date. He had taken her to a fancy high end restaurant that was famous for its unique glass furniture..
In his opinion, the date turned out quite well, the music and food was nice. Personally he thought the design choice was...unique but Annabeth seemed to like it. In fact it seemed to be the only thing about the date that she liked. All throughout the date she had this bored expression on her face, as if she was expecting more from him and he had let her down tremendously.
When he asked her all he got in response was “seaweed brain this is our six month anniversary and you think a simple restaurant date will be enough? For our first month anniversary you took me to Paris , how will this ever compare to that ?”
Simple? It was the third most expensive restaurant in new york! Percy had to save up for three weeks in order to book a reservation. And that’s not even counting the cost of Annabeth’s orders. Percy grimaced as he thought of the empty crater of his what used to be his wallet.
It seemed that nothing he does could ever be enough for her, but that’s fine. Wise girl just expected a lot from him but that’s his fault for setting her expectations so high. It just means that he will have to make it up to her later
And yes paying for everything took a sizable amount from his savings, but if it meant that Annabeth was happy then it was all worth it right?. After all Annabeth deserved the best.
Right?
Anyways on their way back home, they stopped by a river. All of a sudden percy was bombarded by numerous tiny voices telepathically beaming into his head .
‘My lord, your assistance is greatly needed ’
In the corner of his eye he could see a school of vibrant fishes desperately trying to get his attention. Turning to converse with the sea creatures , he missed the slight look of disgust that flashed across Annabeth’s face as she watched him.
Emergence of purification
It Turns out Grover was in the area nearby helping deal with pollution and desperately needed assistance. Unfortunately this meant that Percy was unable to walk Annabeth home like he promised her. This disruption alongside what she considered a ‘mediocre’ choice for a six month anniversary date placed Annabeth in an extremely sour mood, so it confused Percy on why she insisted on following him as he went to help Grover.
The fishes stopped suddenly ‘this is as far we are able to my lord, the water from this point on is too dangerous for us to safely swim in, just go forward and your friend will be there’
Percy thanked the fish for their help before continuing to venture forward with Annabeth. It wasn’t long before he came across a horrible sight.
It seems a vehicle carrying chemicals had crashed into a sewage system and the polluted water had flooded the nearby park causing irreparable damage to the surrounding lifestyle.
Percy stumbled to the ground, looking down he froze in horror to see that he had tripped on the dead body of a wood nymph who was killed by the pollution. Looking around he could see the dead bodies of various creatures floating around in the corrupted waters.
In the middle was Grover, frantically trying to rescue the few surviving wood nymphs and dryads. He was surrounded by a tide of the rising polluted waters. Percy could feel Grover's fear rising with every second Percy rushed towards Grover , slightly hindered by the strange way the polluted water seemed to cling to him as if it knew something about him that he couldn’t yet see.
Grover’s face brightened when he saw Percy, his relief shining through their empathy bond
“Percy thank goodness you’re here” he bleated, "do you think you can move the water so we can escape?"
Percy hesitated something about the water felt off to him. It felt stronger and different to any water he had controlled in the past.
"I can try G-man, but I won't make any promises, something feels off here". He said
behind him Annabeth scoffed, seeing as she had no underwater breathing or nature based ability she had stayed behind to act as a lookout for any monsters in the area'.
"come on seaweed brain what's a little bit of pollution going to do to your powers?. Hurry this up, you still owe me for that mediocre date you put me though" she said. Grover frowned, people's lives were at stake and that was all she cared about? Percy felt the cold gaze of her grey eyes piercing through his back as he began to focus on the corrupted waves in front of him.
At first the water moved under his control like normal , however Percy soon felt a tugging in his gut that began to expand and expand as the water began to move about violently as it encircled the group in the middle before all of a sudden the water filled the entire park, Percy could hear Annabeth's screams as she ran to avoid the water. Percy tried to stop the water from moving but it appeared to have gained a mind of its own as it continued to encircle every area that the chemical spill had touched.
One of the nymphs that Grover had tried to rescue weakly coughed. Percy turned his head to see that her tree was damaged beyond repair, she clearly didn't have much time left and if things stayed as they are neither would they. If only Percy thought, there was a way for all this pollution to be purified . As if hearing his command, the tug in his gut worsened as the polluted waters began to glow a vibrant blue filling the entire area forcing everyone to close their eyes.
When he opened his eyes, Percy was shocked to find that the water was completely clear, no hint of any pollution or sewage at all. In fact, it looked like it came freshly imported from the sea. It wasn't just the water that had changed, no the entire park looked rejuvenated . what was once a desolate overgrown park on its last legs of life was now a thriving oasis of nature... minus all the dead bodies of course but regular mortals couldn't see that anyway.
All the surviving nymphs and dryads looked the healthiest they'd ever been. even the one that had previously been on the verge of death looked bright as day. Somehow percy knew that she would last at least another century or two despite all the damage she endured.
Did he destroy the corruption? No it was still there but it’s purer.
Could it be? Had he unlocked a new power? But what could it be?
Grover turned to him eyes sparkling “Percy do you know what this means?” he asked excitedly.
“No?” Percy said slightly nervous, no one had ever reacted to his powers like this before.
“It means that we have a new way of restoring the wild!” the satyr exclaimed eyes wide with glee.
Through their energy bond, Grover's joy was infectious and Percy soon found himself smiling joyously as well.
In their joy, Neither noticed the tense scowl that had slipped unto Annabeth's face
Until she coughed loudly drawing their attention to the blonde girl absolutely drenched in sewage water, for some reason the water around her was still polluted.
Grover looked at Percy worriedly as he felt his fear and anxiety rapidly spike to frightening levels . Percy felt the dread pool at the bottom of his stomach as he realised he was in for a world of trouble once they were alone.
The first strike (but not the first physical one)
Annabeth was absolutely livid. Who did that seaweed brain think he is? Using his powers so blatantly, rubbing it in her face what she will never be able to obtain. As punishment she gave him the silent treatment on the way back until they reached their apartment. Once the door was locked behind them she turned to him, eyes blazing with rage.
"Annabeth I swear I didn't mean to-"
The sound of a smack echoed across the room as Percy's eyes widened in shock, suddenly feeling like he was back in his old apartment in New York with smelly gabe.
Percy froze, hand slowly going to his cheek where he could still feel the heat of the slap that she had given him. He seemed to shrink in on himself, becoming smaller. Good he shouldn’t be trying to be bigger than her.
"How dare you" she screamed with rage, "do you realise what you've done? what you have almost become? A monster Percy, I was forced to watch you almost become a monster again "
"do you know how it feels, to stand by and do nothing while your boyfriend uses unnatural powers to play god?"
Percy interrupted her "unnatural? Wise girl purification is a natural process in the ocean, it's how the pollution is purged from the greater depths of the sea" Percy had learnt this during one of his many visits to Atlantis.
"Is it the purification of Poseidon's domains?" Annabeth shot back "Last time I checked he's the God of destruction so all you should be capable of doing is destroying, not whatever nonsense you just did"
Like a fool, Percy opened his mouth, “would you rather I let Grover die? Let those innocent nymphs and dryads die?” he said, trying to make her see reason.
she steamrolled right over him, “We all nearly died thanks to whatever you were doing with the water- what was the deal with that anyway? You almost caused me to drown!” She ranted.
She paused, If she kept on going like this, her seaweed brain might get overwhelmed and burst the pipes or cause some other unnatural phenomenon which will cause his undersea family to come running and whisk him away to under the sea where his would be out her reach. Out of her control. That won’t do. not at all.
Time to do some damage control.
Annabeth was good at faking emotions, it was a habit most children of Athena picked up to avoid being labelled as ‘creepy’ by other campers. What did they know? Just because children of Athena weren’t as burdened by emotions as the rest of them doesn’t make them creepy.
Nonetheless, it was a skill she was glad she learnt as it was a perfect way to keep Percy in line.
“I’m sorry seaweed brain it’s just…..” her breath hitched, eyes glassy like she was about to break into tears “for a second it felt like I was back in tartarus with you torturing ankyls” she ‘whimpered’
“I was so so scared, I thought I was going to lose you again” she ‘sobbed’ covering her eyes with her hands
From the cracks in her fingers she could see Percy's resolve begin to weaken as guilt slowly overtook his features. She inwardly smirked . Perfect
“Wise girl I’m so sorry.. I didn’t realise”. Percy’s arms came around her in a gentle embrace
She looked at him ‘tearfully’ “just promise me you’ll never use that power again, or any of your powers in fact, what you did tonight was dangerous and a sign your powers are growing out of control- you need to be kept under control, what if you hurt someone like Estelle?”
Percy’s breath hitched and Annabeth knew she had him right where she wanted him.
Seaweed brain would never risk anything happening to his baby sister and as long as she held that over his head, she had a way of keeping him in check.
Little did she know. That long after she had gone to sleep Percy stayed up in the bathroom, hands still tracing the spot where she had slapped, wondering if it was normal to feel so powerless in a relationship.
The first strike had been cast and now there were two more to go.
Chapter 2: Mermaid mania

Chapter Text
Beach date
It was supposed to be an uneventful date. Just a quiet relaxing day by the beach.
In an attempt to make up for the disastrous sixth month anniversary date, Percy had decided to take Annabeth on a weekend getaway to montauk. Of course he made sure to remove any and all traces of spiders before Annabeth entered the cabin. Annnabeth would kill him otherwise.
Percy didn’t admit it, but it was nice to be close to the sea again. Ever since Annabeth made him swear to stop using his powers, he felt like he had been shut into a glass box and she destroyed the key. Being close to the sea eased the burden somewhat. made it more bearable.
What’s more, ever since that day he’s felt eyes trailing him wherever he goes. From his classes, to his mom’s place, even in the bathroom. It’s almost as if Annabeth was spying on him. But she wouldn’t……. Right?
Anyway, the date had been going well so far, sure Annabeth didn’t look thrilled when he showed her the interior of Montauk, but at least she wasn’t scowling at him anymore.
As long as he didn’t mess this up he’d earn her forgiveness in no time and hopefully she would allow him to use his powers again! It feels so constricting keeping it all restrained like this
—------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To say Annabeth was annoyed was putting it lightly. When Seaweed Brain had talked to her about Montauk, he made it sound like some romantic getaway, a luxurious place that was befitting for someone like her. She thought that Percy had finally got it together and realised the proper way to be to be treating her.
But instead he took her to a beach ? Sure it was the beach his parents met at? But still a mere beach?. And to make matters worse, it wasn’t even a luxurious one that he took her too. Does he even truly love her in that seaweed brain of his?
Sure this run-down shack may have been suitable enough for the god of the sea, but that god clearly has no taste. This Annabeth was certain of, as Poseidon had rejected all of her designs for the reconstruction of his temple, delaying production indefinitely. His reason? Too much glass.
The audacity. He should be honoured that she was even devoting so much time to his stupid temple! She was the Architect of Olympus , chosen by the gods themselves to rebuild Olympus and he was questioning her.
At least Percy had the common sense to rent out the entire beach for the weekend. Now she won’t have to deal with any whores trying to seduce her boyfriend. Percy was always too polite to them as well, annabeth bet he secretly enjoyed all the attention. Why would he be so kind otherwise?. Well it doesn’t matter. He was hers and that will never change.
Annabeth was enjoying living with a powerless Percy, it gave her a thrill, knowing that she was the most powerful person in the relationship. Besides, Percy didn’t need his powers anyway, his swordsmanship skills (though not as skilled as Luke’s) were proficient enough that he can defeat most monsters without even using a drop of water.
Sure he looked more queasy and worse for wear these days, but that was probably the stress of studying, he was never that bright after all.
Everything will be fine as long as seaweed brain doesn't use his powers. And from what Annabeth has seen from her observations , he is doing exactly that.
Mermaid mania - the transformation
Annabeth was taking advantage of Percy being powerless to give him a taste of his own medicine.
Earlier today he had accidentally splashed water on her architecture designs, ruining hours of hard work so as punishment while they were walking across the shore she was going to ‘accidentally’ push him into the ocean while he was holding a signed copy of Sally's latest book. Since he couldn’t use his powers , the book would be irreparably damaged and Annabeth would have her well deserved justice.
However when she pushed him into the water he began to change.
Annabeth watched in horror as his fingers became webbed and scales grew on his arms. What’s more Annabeth could see the beginning of gills forming.
And finally his legs began to merge together until in their place was a vibrant azure blue tail- the same shade of blue that the polluted water glowed before Percy did that unnatural purification nonsense.
He broke his promise. How dare he use his powers!
Annabeth stared in disgust at the creature before her.
What floated in front of her was no longer her boyfriend but a monster.
Strike two
Percy looked down at himself in amazement. He couldn’t believe his eyes. He was a merman! This was something he always dreamed of happening to him since he was a child.
Percy soon found himself surrounded by countless colorful sea creatures, drawn in the commotion who began showering him with endless compliments.
‘Little prince you look so handsome’
‘My lord that new form of yours is truly divine’
‘You look much more attractive in this form my lord’
Percy was so distracted that he almost didn’t notice the thunderous look on Annabeth’s face. If looks could kill, the son of Poseidon was sure that he’d already be on his way to the underworld.
Fuck, this transformation counted as him using his powers didn’t it? He was going to be in so much trouble wasn’t he?
As he opened his mouth to apologise, Percy was suddenly pushed backwards into the water. He looked at her in surprise, hurt swelling in his eyes.
“Annabeth?, what was that for-” she cut him off, her grey eyes blazing with barely concealed rage. “don’t play dumb with me seaweed brain, you promised you wouldn’t use your powers and yet here you are in all your monstrous glory”
Monstrous .
Is that what he truly looked like?Percy felt his heart sink to the bottom of the ocean.
“It was an accident I didn’t purposefully do this, and you were the one who pushed me into the sea anyways” he retorted
“Wasn’t the purification thing also an accident?, you can’t keep making excuses for yourself seaweed brain” Annabeth said, glaring at him.
“Now change back so you can stop looking so hideous”
Percy hesitated, “Um, wise girl?” He began nervously ,” I don’t know how”
Annabeth growled with frustration, “seriously, you can’t even do one thing right” she grumbled
Annabeth went silent for a second, before she suddenly began walking towards him, dagger unsheathed
“Then i suppose we’ll just have to cut if off manually then” she said
Percy froze. What? Had she lost her mind? Does she not see how his legs FUSED together to become a tail?
“Are you crazy? “ he yelled backing away from her
She scoffed “Don’t be overdramatic seaweed brain, the water will heal you anyways” she said closing the distance between them.
But before she could take another step closer. Annabeth was suddenly bombarded by schools of fishes.
‘Back away harlot’
‘Don’t touch our lord’
‘How dare you call him monstrous you…’
It seems that the fishies had taken offence to Annabeth’s remarks and were now delivering their justice.
The fishes formed a shield around percy, preventing annabeth from getting any closer.
Try as she might, Annabeth was unable to break through and soon found herself being forced back onto shore.
She turned to glare at him “ really, seaweed brain? Sending animals to attack me, that’s a new low even for you” she said.
Before Percy could open his mouth to try and explain that the sea creatures were acting on their own free will. The crabs lunged forward towards Annabeth, piercers sharp and ready. Annabeth yelped in pain as she felt the impact of their claws hitting their skin.
Giving him one last hateful look, she turned on her tail and ran back into the beachouse, the crabs hot on her trail.
Annabeth didn’t know it but she had just hit strike two.
Sea comfort
While Annabeth had fun with the crabs, Percy got used to swimming with a tail
The fishes had dragged him deeper into the sea, encircling him in a protective barricade.
Absently Percy wondered where they were leading him
‘My lord don’t listen to her, you truly are beautiful in this form’ one of the fishes said, gently touching his nose.
The other creatures were quick to voice their agreement.
‘She is right my lord’
‘That foolish girl doesn’t know what she was saying’
‘You are just as majestic and handsome as the Lord and Prince Triton’
Percy was silent as he let the fishes rambling wash over him, floating aimlessly across the sea. His mind drifted back to his encounter with Annabeth.
Monstrous, she called him. Is that what this power really was? At first he thought this new power was wondrous but Annabeth’s reaction left him unsure.
Underneath her anger, Percy saw the underlying fear. She feared him. Fearing what he and his powers could do. The last thing Percy wanted to do was scare Annabeth. She was acting out of fear.
Sure she hurt him, yes and was going to mutilate him . But she didn’t mean to right? right ?
Annabeth seems to think all his powers are monstrous though can he even trust her judgement?
She seemed to prefer that he’d let grover die
Percy was so lost in thought that he didn’t notice something was in front of him until he came face to face with a muscular green chest.
Looking up he saw the amused face of his older brother Triton staring down at him. It seems the fishies had led him straight to his older brother.
“Perseus, what brings you here?” Triton asked “And I must say I love your tail, it really brings out your eyes”
Percy’s face flushed crimson “umm. Thank you.. And well it’s a long story”, he paused, unwilling to tell Triton , who wasn’t particularly fond of Annabeth in the first place what happened to lead him here “… in fact it is too long to tell you right now when you are so busy… so if you don’t mind i’ll leave now” He turned and swam away.
Or tried to.
It turns out swimming with a tail is harder than you expect.
Much harder than swimming away with legs, Percy can assure you.
Triton watched him struggle for a few minutes before swimming over and gently guiding his body into the correct position, grabbing his hand as they began swimming in the direction of Atlantis.
“Come on, brother” Triton said “When we arrive at home, I will teach you how to properly use your new tail and how to transform back” percy could feel the relief coursing through him. There was a way to change back! He wouldn’t be a merman forever!
Now all he needs to do is find a way for Annabeth to forgive him and everything is solve-
“ And ”, Triton continued, you can explain everything to me, Matera and Patera together”
Oh gods . Percy thought, this isn’t going to end well.
—-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
To say that his undersea family was less than pleased was a grave understatement. They were livid . Percy just barely managed to prevent Triton from going up to the surface to have a talk with Annabeth. He wasn’t able to stop that hurricane in San Francisco though
It took Percy promising to stay underwater for the rest of the week before they were able to calm down.
They assured him that his powers were completely natural, apparently it was common for children of Poseidon to be able to transform into a merman if they lived long enough. And no he was not monstrous or hideous in any way. How could he be, when he resembled the appearance of the average mer?
Down in the sea, surrounded by the comfort of his undersea family, Percy felt treasured and safer than he had felt with months
Safer than he had ever felt with Annabeth
Percy dreaded reuniting with Annabeth later because he knew she was going to be pissed and frankly he was getting tired of her behaviour, she almost mutilated him over something she caused.
He was a glass wall that she kept striking and striking at. But Percy was starting to think that all she needs is one more strike before he snaps.

Summary:
The third strike wasn’t all that dramatic, not when the glass wall was already fractured with cracks from the prior two strikes. Perhaps that’s why this strike was more invisible
or

Chapter Text
Feeling watched
For a while Percy has been feeling as though he is being watched. Everywhere he goes he feels a second pair of eyes trailing behind him.
What’s more, ever since that day he’s felt eyes trailing him wherever he goes. From his classes, to his mom’s place, even in the bathroom. It’s almost as if Annabeth was spying on him. But she wouldn’t……. Right?
Invisible Stalker
Annabeth didn’t mean to make a hobby out of stalking Percy.
She swears.
It was supposed to be a one time thing. She just needed to find out how he was getting better grades than her. She was supposed to be the smart one in the relationship . She was the wise girl, not him!
So it was perfectly understandable that she should observe him in his college classes with her invisibility cap.
And besides it was just going to be a one time thing so no harm done right?
it’s just that………
He’s been so distant ever since the mermaid incident. Sure maybe she slightly overreacted, but that's no reason for him to hold her at arm’s length. It was a perfectly logical reaction to watching your boyfriend transform into a monster especially after the disappointing day that she’d had. Besides he could take it, he’s been through tartarus.
Unfortunately, the seaweed brain didn’t see it that way, clearly the work of his pesky undersea relatives whispering poison into his ear.
If it wasn’t for the way those crabs were looking at her, she wouldn’t have apologised in the isn’t place. Why should she? She was the one who needed an apology, she was the one who got chased and assaulted by crabs as well as attacked by those psychotic fish that Percy totally didn’t send after her.
It’s just…. that………. she needs to keep him on his toes. After all the boyfriend of Annabeth Chase can’t afford to get rusty, it would reflect badly on her. He needs to keep his skills sharp. And what better way to do that than spying on him with her invisibility cap?
Besides, her Seaweed brain needed to become more observant anyway so she was doing him a favour!
But then a one time thing became a two-time thing. Then three times. Then four. And soon stalking Percy became a regular pastime of hers. She followed him everywhere, to camp half blood, the coffee shop he works part time, even in his bedroom!.
The one place she couldn’t follow him to is Atlantis.. Or the beach (stupid crabs). Which was frustrating . Especially as Percy had began visiting there more frequently since the mermaid incident, of course she wasn’t invited
How else was she going to ensure that Percy stuck to his promise and didn’t use his powers more than necessary (an amendment she was forced to add after the mermaid incident)
Percy’s powers needed to be kept under lock and key. They were unnatural. Powers that extended beyond his father’s domain and betrayed all sense of reason. Powers that allowed him to control poison and make the goddess of misery beg for mercy . Sometimes Annabeth can still hear her screams when she closes her eyes.
Recently he even gained the ability to turn into what some monstrous sea creature looks like it came from the depths of Tartarus.!
Each day he grew stronger and stronger and one day Annabeth feared that he would grow so strong that he would ascend and leave her behind.
So to prevent that from happening Annabeth made him promise to not use his powers at all except when necessary such as fighting monsters. He doesn’t need to use such monstrous powers in everyday life or for pleasure. What was he? A god?
It wasn’t that Annabeth didn’t trust her boyfriend to keep his promises. His fatal flaw was personal loyalty after all - loyalty towards her that is. Which he had undoubtedly proven time and time again.
But she wasn’t taking any chances. And it was a good thing she didn’t.
Because today while she was observing Percy in his class, she caught him using his powers to swirl a glass of water. In broad daylight! How dare he!. Do promises mean nothing to him? What part of this is necessary?
‘Ohh, he is so gonna get it later,’ Annabeth quietly fumed, glaring a hole into Percy's head from where she was hiding.
Using his powers for no reason. That boy is going out of control. She needs to rein him in and soon. Before he escapes her clutches forever.
She needs to observe him further. Everywhere he goes. Camp half blood. Olympus. The bathroom. Anywhere that he could be using his powers for some unorthodox reason
As long as she doesn’t get caught, everything will be fine. And she won’t get caught. Not at all
The glass wall braced itself, because though it could not see it, it knew the third and final strike was coming.
Caught in cold blood
Percy was watching Estelle while Sally and Paul were out for a date night.
He had such a strange day,
He was in that architecture class that he took so that he and Annabeth would share at least one class together, sitting in a corner absently stirring water in a glass, a technique he discovered helps him concentrate better in class. His grades started improving soon after he started doing this to the shock and amazement of Annabeth.
He still remembers the jealousy surprise that flashed through her eyes when she saw that he got a higher grade than her for once. In architecture no less. She accused him of cheating which hurt a little, like she doesn’t know how much he studied with someone smart enough to be with her. She had been having a dispute with the teacher over the practicability of her glass designs. Just because she can’t accept criticism for her glass designs doesn't mean that the class is stupid
Today was strange though. In class he got the strangest feeling as though someone was glaring holes into his brain. Someone he knew.
He could have sworn he smelt Annabeth’s perfume right next to him as well. But that would mean she was stalking him - but she wouldn’t do that right? Honestly he wouldn’t be surprised if she was.
Sure they’d been distant lately. But all couples go rough patches occasionally do all couples nearly mutilate one another
And sure Annabeth tried to severely mutilate him, but she didn’t do it out of malice, she did so out of fear. Fear of him and what he’d become. Percy didn’t want Annabeth to be scared of him. Annabeth doesn’t deserve to be in a relationship where she is constantly scared on stepping on the toes of her partner. So why does he have to go through it then? Why does he have to live in fear of pissing her off? Of getting hit? WHY WHY WH-
The sounds of a child’s laughter filled the room, banishing the dark feelings that been slowly building up. Estelle clapped her hands together as she watched the colourful characters on the television screen.
From his place at the kitchen sink, Percy smiled at the sound of her joy as he focused on cleaning up dinner. His dark thoughts temporarily forgotten as he basks in the joyous atmosphere.
As he rinsed all the dishes, A thought came to him. What if he used his powers to instantly dry the dishes? That would technically count as doing chores which was a necessary part of life. So technically he wouldn’t be breaking Annabeth’s promise. He shouldn’t have made that promise in the first place. Every day it became harder to hold it back.
With his mind made up, he used his powers to instantly dry them all instantly. Immediately Percy tensed as the hairs at the back of his neck raised. There it was again. The familiar piercing glare he felt in class. The same glare he felt every time he used his powers nowadays. And there was still the scent of Annabeth’s perfume.
Was he being stalked? Did a monster break in somehow?
Percy noticed how Estelle had suddenly gone quiet in the next room over. Panic began rising in his chest as he slowly turned around, riptide at the ready. When all of a sudden he heard a loud commotion and a yell coming from the living room
“Get away from my brother you ghost”
And the sound of something hitting the ground close by him
Percy looked at the floor only to stare in shock as he found a very familiar looking Yankee cap at his feet. Turing around he came face to face with a disgruntled Annabeth lying in a heap on the floor and a very triumphant Estelle holding a baseball bat.
“Percy!” Estelle turned to him eyes bright “I caught the smelly ghost that been lurking in our apartment” she said
For the past few days, Estelle had been claiming she smelt a ‘ghost’ in their apartment. At the time Percy had brushed it off assuming she had a wild imagination as she was partially obsessed with that ghost hunter show. But now…….
Strike three
Before Annabeth could open her mouth to speak, Percy cut her off with straight glare
“Wait here, we’ll talk after I get Estelle to go to sleep”, seeing as she had no other option, Annabeth reluctantly nodded. Percy turned around and gently began ushering Estelle to bed, despite her many protests about how she wanted to deal with the ‘ghost’ herself.
12 minutes later Percy returned to the kitchen where Annabeth was waiting for him, arms crossed as though she was the victim in this scenario.
For a few seconds there was silence as both parties stared at each other
“What are you doing in my mom’s apartment wise girl?” Percy finally asked, growing tired of waiting for her to speak.
she glared at him , eyes blazing with barely concealed rage “What am I doing? What about yourself seaweed brain, I’m not the one who broke their promise not to use powers”
“It was just to dry the dishes, there is nothing unnatural about that!” he retorted “and besides drying dishes is a very necessary part of ensuring they are clean”
“Then what about what you did in class with the glass of water huh seaweed brain? What part of that is necessary?” she shot back.
Percy’s eyes widened in shock at the implicit reveal that she had been spying on him all this time. So that’s where the weird smell was coming from.
“You’ve been spying on me - what the hell wise girl” Percy said
The invisible hand readied itself preparing to strike
Annabeth scoffed unrepentant “Well someone had to keep an eye on you seaweed brain and let’s face it: you need to be restrained” she said “ you keep using your powers for no reason acting like you are above us all”
“you are out of control and you need me to keep you in check, otherwise you’ll become a monster - like you almost did in Tartarus” she continued.
Tartarus. It always seemed to come back to this. Every time they had an argument all Annabeth had to do was bring it up and she’d automatically won. It worked for the purification incident, the mermaid incident and every other incident beforehand.
But not this one.
Percy could take a lot of things from Annabeth. The abuse, belittlement he could take. But this ? This went too far. Percy could not stand and let this slide. Annabeth had been spying on him for gods knows how long
“We are not in Tartarus right now” Percy said, “and even then that’s not an excuse for what you did wise girl”
“You violated my privacy and that’s not ok-”
“And?” Annabeth said eyes rolling “if you hadn’t been breaking your promises you wouldn’t be so worked up about this”
“Honestly seaweed brain” she said stepping closer to him “this is why you need me around to keep you in check”
Percy stepped away from her, not liking the strange glint that appeared in her eye
The glass wall braced for impact, knowing that it wouldn’t survive another hit
“Stop changing the subject” he said “where else have you been following me around” he demanded
“Why? What are you so desperate to hide from me?” Annabeth growled eyes flashing as she grabbed his arms
Percy flinched as he felt her nails dig into his skin.
“If you want to be monstrous so much seaweed brain, let me show you a monstrous side of my own” she whispered darkly into his ear.
The invisible hand slammed into the glass wall, shattering it into a thousand pieces
Percy could feel his heart pounding in his chest as he felt the fear begin to rise. When all of a sudden
A voice rang out protective rage evident
“What do you think you are doing to my brother mortal?” a familiar voice said, turning around Percy saw his older brother Triton in all his glory, arms crossed as he glared at Annabeth.
Annabeth quickly let go of Percy laughing nervously “nothing” she said “ I was just leaving lord triton”
Annabeth leaned into Percy's ears and whispered that they would discuss this later and left grabbing her Yankees cap on the way out.
Slowly Percy felt the tension leave his body.
“Now Perseus”, Triton said, staring at the imprints that Annabeth’s nails had left on his arms “Care to tell me what that was about?”
To say Triton was mad was an understatement. It took all of Percy's might to prevent triton from hunting Annabeth down and killing her himself
Brotherly Love
Apparently while he and Annabeth were arguing Estelle had been woken up by all the commotion and prayed to Triton for help to get rid of the ‘smelly ghost’ that was tormenting her brother
Concerned, Triton had teleported to the Jackson apartment immediately where he came across Annabeth attacking percy.
Triton fussed over Percy for the rest of the night and insisted on using a healing salve on Percy's wounds before finally leaving.
Before he left Triton turned to him “Purification was originally going to be one of Pallas domains before she died” he said softly . Unsure of how to respond percy stayed silent
“But if anyone else had to have I am eternally glad it was you” he smiled at Percy before disappearing with a coral breeze.
Interlude: the three strikes
The first strike was quick and fast, easily forgiven after all there were no other cracks to compare it to.
The second strike was brutal, its impact not so easily hidden
By The third strike the glass wall was so weakened it collapsed entirely on impact
Annabeth didn’t know it yet but she had hit her third strike. It’s time for her to go out. Out of Percy's life. She was about to learn that he wasn't going to put up with her bullshit anymore.
Notes:
I just wanted to say thank you for all the kind comments, they really mean a lot.
This chapter was a day later than I intended but at least I finally wrote that essay!
This chapter ended up being longer than intendedAlso Estelle was standing behind Annabeth so she didn't realise who it was. She just thought it was a ghost that had broken into their house.
It might take a while for chapter 4 to come out as school is starting for me next week.
Chapter 4: Power dampeners

Here's the final chapter, it's at least 2k words so I apologise in advance
This update is a day later than expected due to me being unwellEdit: just went back and added some things that didn't transfer over when I copied this over from Google docs previously. Most of the changes are from confrontation onwards

Chapter Text
Annabeth’s interlude
Percy couldn’t see it, but he was growing out of control. Or more precisely, his powers were.
. He was becoming a monster. And it seems that only Annabeth was aware of it.
With every new power that he gained, he grew more and more monstrous. And instead of trying to reduce the usage of his powers what does he do? Use them more. And in unnecessary ways nonetheless
Initially Annabeth tried to be nice and gave him an ultimatum to stop using his powers or she would break up with him, not that she would actually break up with him, that is, she was just planning to let him beg for forgiveness for a few days before taking him back. but it’s better for him to think that there were consequences to his actions. It makes him easier to control after all.
However she still caught him using his powers for unnecessary reasons afterwards. And when she confronted him, he had the gall to be mad at her for ‘invading his privacy’. If he wasn’t doing anything wrong he shouldn’t care that she was stalking him!
If only Triton didn’t intervene when he did. She could have taught that seaweed brain a real good lesson. One he’d never forget. One that ensured he never disobeyed her again. Blasted sea gods always getting in her way.
But regardless, she had invested too much into Percy to lose him now! He was hers whether he liked it or not. That fact was as true as her skill in architecture.
Percy’s powers needed to be kept under control. And if he was unwilling to do it himself well…..
Then she would gladly do it for him.
Sea sickness
Lately Percy has not been feeling his best. He has been growing sicker and sicker with each passing day. He feels weaker as well. Like he is just escaping on by.
What’s worse, he’s been finding it harder to use his powers. Any time he tries he feels this excruciating, stabbing sensation in his gut. A fog gathers in his head making him incredibly weak and it’s like his body forgets how to function. It’s like someone took his connection to the sea and smothered almost to the point of no return.
This pain has resulted in Percy having to drastically reduce his usage of powers because even just telepathically communicating with fish or horses can result in him vomiting blood.. It hurts. To be so disconnected from the sea. Even worse the pain meant that he was unable to help Grover with purging polluted areas or help any sea creatures that needed his help. To Annabeth's pleasure . Truly it’s been a miserable few weeks for Percy. But if there’s one highlight, he supposes it's that his relationship with Annabeth seems to have improved partly because he has been able to spend more time with her due to being unable to literally do anything else.
Two days after the incident at his mom’s apartment, she approached him, claiming that she wanted to apologise for her behaviour. She said through gritted teeth that she had realised what she did was wrong and she felt incredibly guilty over it. Her grey eyes twitched as She promised that she would do better. Initially Percy was suspicious, something about her apology seemed off, was it her strained smile?. Also Percy cannot remember a time where Annabeth had ever taken the initiative and apologised for her actions before. Ever. It always had to be him who was in the wrong
Clearly this was a sign that she was overcoming her fatal flaw, right?
Annabeth even went as far as to take him out on a date night. Sure it was to a museum focused on glass artworks which is not really something Percy enjoyed but it’s the thought that counts. Percy had been excited because they had just added a new section that focused on glass crabs. How cool was that. And even better they were blue. Blue glass crabs. Two of his and Annabeth's favourite things combined. but for some reason Annabeth was vehemently against visiting the section. In fact, she made them avoid the sea creatures section for the entire visit. They spent the whole visit looking at glass architecture and Owl sculptures. Her reason?
“You already see the sea enough as it is seaweed brain, you should spend some time around some normal creatures for once”.
Honestly percy didn’t enjoy the date night, but this was the first time that Annabeth had ever taken him out on a date, it wasn’t going to be perfect despite how Annabeth always expected the ones he takes her on to be. The fact that she tried at all counts for something right?
Yes percy had to pay for both his and Annabeth’s meals. Annabeth made up for it by bringing him a special homemade ‘smoothie’ she supposedly made for him to drink.
The smoothie was a luminous bright orange that seemed to pulse in its bottle. It had a strange constituency that reminded Percy of the toxic sludge found in sewers. Percy could swear that at times the drink seemed to glow ominously like a predator analyzing its prey.
So understandably Percy was reluctant to try it at first but when he voiced his hesitation, Annabeth’s eye took a familiar hard glint which promised pain if things don’t go her way.
“Really? after I took you out all the way here? How ungrateful Seaweed Brain!” was the only response he got.
Reluctantly Percy downed the ‘smoothie’ grimacing at the vile taste. He missed the way Annabeth’s lips curled up into a sinister smirk as her plan fell into place.
Strangely it was also that very same day that he began having trouble with his powers. It was on their way home when a taxi car splashed water on them. When Percy tried to dry them, he was stopped by the formation of a splitting headache. He almost passed out in the middle of the street and had to be helped back to their apartment by Annabeth. Who seemed entirely too pleased by the whole thing
Later Annabeth suggested it was a sign he overused his powers and should use them less. Privately Percy disagreed but he was too tired to argue with her.
Due to his worsening condition, Annabeth had taken to following him around everywhere, micromanaging everything he did, monitoring every person he spoke to. It was driving him mad! But Annabeth was only doing this because she cared right?
To help with his recovery Annabeth had began making more of those ‘smoothies’ for him to drink at least thrice a week, claiming that they would help with recovery. Although they only seemed to make him worse.
Discovery of Betrayal
Ever since his sickness had arrived, Percy had been confined to their apartment. For his own safety, Annabeth claimed. It was too dangerous to let him walk around on his own in this weakened state. What if he got caught up in a monster attack?
Thus Percy entered a new chapter of his life where he starred as Rapunzel. . For some reason Iris messages didn’t work in the apartment meaning he had no way to contact the demigods at camp half blood or anyone else really. His undersea relatives had also gone radio quiet too. He tried praying to them to get a response but it was like his prayers were trapped behind a glass wall, unable to breach the surface.
Annabeth soon became his only source of contact with the outside world. She also became his only way of gaining food and water since Percy was unable to work or go out to buy things.. Percy relied on her for everything now. And she didn’t let him forget it.
One of the few things that Percy was still able to do independently was cleaning. Although it was slow due to the constant agony he was in. Sometimes he wasn’t able to clean the apartment to Annabeth’s standards before she got back, which caused him to face the brunt of her fury.
“I spend all day, seaweed brain working hard to provide for both of us and you can’t even clean up this apartment properly - all you do is laze around all day!” She glared at him eyes hardening “you need to do better”
And she was right. He did need to get better. Here he was complaining about pain when she has to go out everyday and earn enough for two people. Cleaning up the apartment is the least he could do.
—---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One day while Annabeth was out, at some event unveiling her glass architecture with her work friends, Percy was alone cleaning the apartment when he found something strange tucked away in one of the glass cupboards in the kitchen.
It was the ‘smoothie’ bottle only this time there was a label attached. That was strange, all the bottles Annabeth had given him previously had no label attached. Looking deeper Percy found an entire crate of the ‘smoothies’ hidden behind some pots and pans.
If these ‘smoothies’ were truly homemade as she claims, why was there a whole box of them with labels in here? It made no sense. Come to think of it, Percy had never seen her buy ingredients for the ‘smoothie’ or even make it either. If Annabeth was lying about something as simple as making a smoothie, what else was she lying about?
Percy brought the bottle out of the cupboard, the label glinting in the light. His eyes widened in horror as he read the Ancient Greek writing on the label.
Warning: Anti-Power medication is only to be administered by the head-medic to demigods in times of stress where losing control seems imminent or already occurring. DO NOT take on a regular basis EFFECTS: pain, nausea, vomiting when using parents domain over time. Can cause death.
Percy felt everything come to a stop. He knew it was too good to be true Anti-power medication? Is that why he’s been feeling so ill and why his powers aren’t working?
Annabeth had been deliberately weakening him watching him grow into an empty husk day by day. Why? What did she gain from this? Did she fear his powers that much? Was he that much of a monster?
It’s all his fault. He scared her. He pushed her too far. He should have listened to her, stopped using his unnatural powers. It’s all hi-
No.
It’s not his fault. It’s Annabeth's fault. His powers are a natural part of him and she has no right to dictate how she uses them. Nor she does she have the right to lock him up in this apartment isolated away from his family and friends.
If Annabeth had truly done this because she cared, she would have followed the instructions clearly written on the label, especially the instruction not to give out the potion on a regular basis. Which she blatantly ignored.
Percy wouldn’t be surprised if Annabeth had done something to hide the apartment from the godly world. It would explain why everyone had gone radio silent on him. Forcing to rely on Annabeth for any source of information.
Percy glanced at the clock. 16:35 pm. Annabeth would be home soon. And she would not be pleased if she saw what he had found.
He had to leave and he had to leave right now. He needed to go to the sea
Confrontation
Annabeth walked the streets with her head held high. Why shouldn’t she? Things had been working out tremendously for her lately.
Not only had she been gaining more and more clients interested in her work. But she had also received a promotion. A clear sign she was favoured by the gods.
What’s more, Thanks to that potion, Percy had finally stopped using his powers at all.
She had come across the potion during a routine inspection of the newly built Hecate cabin during one of her last visits at camp. According to the Hecate campers they just found the recipe for the potion in one of the books their mother left for them. As soon as she read the label Annabeth knew it was just what she needed. The instructions on it just say that the potions are meant to only go to the Apollo cabin. But Annabeth was a Hero of Olympus, they didn't doubt what she could have needed it for.
After a trial run, Annabeth had arranged for them to send her a monthly supply of the potions citing that Percy's powers were growing out of control and this was the only thing that helped.
While the label and hecate campers advised against regular dosage citing health concerns , Annabeth disregarded the warnings once she found that giving percy large amounts made him more docile. More easier to control. Which Annabeth liked.
Unfortunately the potion caused Percy to become incredibly ill to the point where he couldn’t leave the apartment. Annabeth didn’t mind. It made him easier to control after all. Moreover, it forced Percy to rely on her for everything . Annabeth loved the thrill of power it gave her. It’s what she deserved after all.
She had hired an… associate to ward the apartment to prevent any goldy interference. This way none of his pesky undersea relatives could interfere and ruin all her hard work.
Of course the seaweed brain couldn’t sit at home doing nothing, so she gave him the responsibilities of doing all the house. But it seems he couldn’t even do that! Often Annabeth would return home to find Percy still in the process of cleaning the apartment. He would sputter out some weak excuse about feeling ill but Annabeth didn't buy it. The potion couldn't be making him that ill. And besides percy had gone through worse and turned out fine.
Oh well, regardless Annabeth couldn’t wait to get home to a hopefully sparkling clean apartment and discuss her day with her boyfriend.
All of sudden as she passed by the aquarium, grimacing at crabs in the display she caught sight of a familiar pair of frightened sea green eyes in the reflection. Turning around she came face to face with- Percy? What was he doing here? He’s supposed to be cleaning!
Percy slowly backed away from her, trying to create as much distance between them as possible
“Stay away from me wise girl” he warned “ I know what you did” he said, gesturing to the potion bottle in his hand, the label glinting in the light.
Annabeth was enraged” you went snooping through my things?” she yelled, causing Percy to flinch.
“It’s hardly snooping if it’s in the kitchen” Percy retorted
“And don’t change the subject, you drugged me with these harmful potions-” Harmful? Does seaweed brain not realise that this is for his own good?
“It was for your own good! Percy you were turning into a monster” she cut him off.
Instead of folding like usual, Percy responded “If it was for my safety then you would have followed the correct dosage on the label”
Percy went silent for a second before he whispered “ you just want control” realisation shining in his eyes
“What” she said. What nonsense was he saying now?
“That’s why you wanted me to stop using my powers, why you isolated me from everyone else - you didn’t like that I was growing beyond your reach, you didn’t like that I was no longer bending to your control” he said, looking her straight in the eye.
“I was never the problem, it was you”
“Are you even listening to yourself speak seaweed brain? You need to be controlled, you’re powers are unstable and dangerous” Annabeth shot back desperately trying to take back control of the situation. But this time, Percy wasn’t letting her take back the reins, it was his turn to be in control.
“You mean that you need for me to be controlled.” Percy replied smoothly “But i’m not going ton sit back and let you continue doing this to me anymore Annabeth”
What? Does he mean? NO- “I’m breaking up with you Annabeth, stay away from me” The nerve of this boy? Who does he think he is? Does he realize that she owns him?
“You can’t break up with me seaweed brain I love you” Annabeth raged
Percy looked at her sadly “ And I loved you wise girl, but i can’t stay in a relationship with someone who keeps on trying to hurt me”
Annabeth scowled. She is not going to let years of hard work go to waste because seaweed brain suddenly grew a spine. She stepped towards Percy . Luckily it seems that the potion was still running through his system this means that it will be easy for her to drag him back to her apartment where she could punish him thoroughly.
As she stepped closer and closer, Annabeth failed to realise that the crabs in the display behind her had began slowly moving towards the glass
The invisible hand was so used to punching the glass wall, causing strike after strike after strike
As she was about to grab Percy’s wrist, they both jumped at the sound of glass breaking. Turning around she paled as she saw the crabs from the enclosure jumping out the window and rushing straight towards her. Fury evident in their eyes.
That it forget that the glass shards can also hurt it back
Not again! Annabeth abandoned Percy as she ran for dear life, the crabs hot on her heels.
Justice is best served under the sea
Annabeth awoke to herself kneeling on Olympus, arms and feets bound by restraints.
Looking up she came face to face with the cold gaze of the Olympian Council. Her own mother included.
“Annabeth Chase” Zeus boomed blue eyes oozing with eclectic energy ” your trial begins now”
Annabeth was forced to watch as Percy’s lawyers brought mountains and mountains of evidence against her, from witness statements to written contracts to her diary entries-how did he find that? .
She listened in shock as Grover, alongside naiads and dryads from the formerly polluted park testified against her. She listened as the Hecate campers swore upon the river styx that they had no idea of what she was doing. They even had the nerve to say that she deccived them!
Some of the hecate campers even looked like they were about to cry. Annabeth wondered why, it's not like they did anything wrong. They just provided her with the means to achieve her goal.
They even managed to find the associate she hired and got him to testify against her. That snake spilled everything to the olympians.
Desperately, Annabeth defended herself as hard as she could pointing out that how justified she was at every given opportunity . But it was to no avail. For some reason It made the gods even angrier. The Verdict was unanimous. She was Guilty.
Annabeth could see her life crumbling into pieces. Her career. Her legacy. Her life. All of it was over
She was no longer a daughter of Athena. She was to be stripped of her title as hero and Architect of Olympus and all the temples she designed would be stripped down and rebuilt without a hint of glass. She would be remembered. But not as a glorious hero but as the abusive monster she thought Percy was.
She would then be handed off to the Atlantean sea court where she would be tried for abduction, coercion and abuse of the youngest member of the royal family. Where her fate would be left up to Poseidon.
Annabeth was probably going to have an eternity of torment waiting for her once she entered those depths.
Her life was over! And Percy didn’t even seem to care.
Oh Annabeth did no one ever tell you the saying three strikes and you’re out.? Cause it's time for you to go.
Under the sea
On the edges of Atlantis two Mers could be swimming happily in the distance surrounded by a school of fish.
The two-tailed Mer turned and said something to the Mer with a blue tail. The boy laughed in response, his sea green eyes glowing with joy.
After Annabeth left, the crabs alerted a nearby nymph of the situation who immediately escorted Percy to Atlantis where he quickly explained the situation?
They say that the rage that Poseidon felt that day was incomparable. Percy wouldn’t know because his father immediately excused himself and he was swarmed by hugs and apologies from the rest of his undersea relatives. Deep inside a part of Percy finally relaxed. He was safe. Annabeth couldn’t hurt him here.
While Annabeth was being hunted for her trial, he was recovering under the watchful eye of his undersea family. To be honest it was a little suffocating at times. Especially since Triton hadn’t left his side once, not even to go to the toilet which was a little embarrassing.
However after months of being treated like trash, it felt nice to know he was so cherished.
Under the sea Percy was finally safe enough to grow into his powers without fear. And they were growing . He could now purify rivers without having to be present there if Grover was nearby. He could transform into poisonous sea creatures as well. What’s more now he could blood bend . How cool was that? He was just like Katara!. Unlike Annabeth, his undersea family encouraged the growth of his powers allowing him to reach to New heights.
Percy knew that they would never leave him. And if the steadily growing gold tint in his blood is anything to go by, it seems that neither will he.
