Chapter 1: Merry Christmas

Chapter Text

"God Maury why am I doing this? This feels so middle school" Matthew groaned, why had he talked himself into this? Dressing up as an elf? How cliche. At least he hadn't gone full Buddy the elf, as much as he did enjoy that film. Due to the main character reminding him of Jay. God, the one that got away. In addition to the whole hat with bells, he'd made it his own, adding some fairy lights to the belt and other areas. Giving it some sass. I mean if he was going to what was probably going to be a travesty of a high school party. With pictures, memorabilia, hangovers and chaos, why not look the part? Everyone dressed up so he wouldn't be the only person doing so. Why not have fun and just embrace the season?

"Because Christmas parties are full of horny, festive energy. Sitting on Santa's lap? Under the mistletoe? Getting wasted? You can get LAID by a hottie dressed up as anyone!" Maury reminded him

Matthew shifted, he was having the best time growing in high school, exploring his sexuality. That blowjob from Jay in the old middle school, meeting Dwayne and dabbling in his sexuality. Finding out new and strange things about himself, what he liked and didn't like. However, his love life was a mess, regardless of how horny or curious he was of anything. He'd met Aiden and grown tired of him due to them being too alike personality wise and then ended up falling for Jay. That ended up going fast and messy and then he was all alone again. He and Dwayne were still putting a label on it, they'd so far sexted and chatted on social media but had no romantic relationship. It was easier to set boundaries and see if they were even compatible. He was hot, he was flirty and he was comfortable with expressing what he liked.

He was relieved to have a friend like Caleb who was familiar and also supported him. He knew he'd not been the best friend to Caleb previously but he'd been a true help to him. He knew Caleb was struggling in high school, finding his peers and also making relationships. He'd recently befriended Missy which was sweet. But things were changing so much and his friendship circle was expanding faster than he expected. Everything just felt so complicated these days it was hard to even keep up. But it was a relief to see friends from high school, familiar faces and still have that comfort zone. With everything happening so fast it was hard to not feel left behind and scared. He wanted so badly just to belong somewhere, to not be the only gay in his high school, but also find community. The Queer choir was a wonderful safe space, but he was more than just a musical theatre kid.

"What better way to celebrate becoming a man than getting drunk amongst your peers and making cringey memories?" Maury encouraged him

"I think I've made enough of those lately" Matthew cringed, he'd made so many mistakes that had both broken his heart and were ones he would never live down. But maybe Maury was right, fuck it. He was in high school, why not embrace being a hot mess? If Devin could dethrone herself as queen bee, why not shake it up?

"Well, the old gangs back together" Andrew sighed happily, Nick had transferred back to Bridgeton high school. Jay had found himself around the weird kids, he and Missy were surrounded by the tech nerds. Matthew was joining the high school choir, everything was changing so fast. His love life was a mess, he'd lost Bernie to another guy, Missy had a boyfriend and he was still painfully alone. But maybe he would have more luck in high school or even college? He was just relieved to see his friends, familiar faces so he felt less alone in the world. Nick had gotten taller and more popular with girls as a result. Jessi had a boyfriend now, so did Missy. Everyone was falling in love and finding their own cliques. But he felt as if he was being left behind and didn't have a community. Just where was he supposed to go now? Maury had moved on from being his hormone monster to being Nick's. What was he supposed to do now? Maybe he could try join a music club? Maybe he could join a reading club? He did enjoy many interests, but he just needed to find his community. But it wouldn't be easy on his own.

Jessi cupped her drink, she was happy to see her old friends again so long as Andrew didn't get all weird and pervy. Through much hesitation she had brought her boyfriend Camden. Who could supply weed to the other guests with their consent of course. Andrew was far into the experience of puberty and had been an early bloomer, it seemed since he had chilled out and stopped being so creepy. She had her struggles with her mental health, meeting a new friend group and accepting herself as bisexual. Camden had been surprisingly chill about that too, supporting her as best he could given his own mental health struggles and awkwardness.

Nick had finally started to bloom albeit late, he was becoming more popular with girls. He'd joined the sports club and was actually a decent player, he'd gained more confidence. He was dating, he was still a dork but people actually found him funny now. He'd gone from being the guy everyone dumped or overlooked to the dreamy IT guy that all the girls were chatting about. He was still finding out the person he was going to be, but he was learning and growing as a result.

"I do believe this is a time to celebrate, commemorate our reunion" Missy encouraged. She had dressed the most innocently in terms of festive attire, dressing in an angelic outfit. With a sparkly tinsel halo, simple white dress and heels. Still fitting for her personality, but a newfound sense of daring for her. She was getting a lot of looks from people at the party, showing off her curves and new cleavage.

"It's time to fucking PARTY! Bloody well get the shots out because I want to see you getting FREAKY!" Mona cheered loudly

"Missy? Can you even drink?" Jessi questioned in concern, knowing how she hyper she could behave on sugar. It was good to see her gaining more confidence however, she'd come a long way. While everyone would take care of her if she went off the rails, Jessi worried about her being targeted for bullying. High school could be rough in that aspect. You never outgrew being the weird kid. Jessi had debated on her outfit, being Jewish and not really celebrating Christmas. So she simply came dressed casually, new jeans, a sexy black shirt and her new jacket. Just because she didn't celebrate the holiday didn't mean she couldn't bond with friends.

She felt a familiar arm across her shoulder "Let her cut loose, worst comes to worse we order takeout" Ali smiled. It would be good for them to all cut loose and have some fun. They could always give her plenty of water and make sure she napped somewhere safe. She was proud to see Missy coming into her own, expressing her sexuality and confidence and even getting a new boyfriend. She'd come a long way. Ali had dressed up as a sexy Santa, with the hat, the dress and even heeled boots. Very fitting of her personality.

"She's touching you! Ali is touching you! Oh my god her hair is so soft and she smells soooo goooooood!" Connie squealed.

Suddenly the front door burst open, Jay appearing in a bright red Santa suit, carrying a sack and grinning manically "Party wolf in da HOUSE!" he yelled.

"Ah Jay, the life of the party, now things should get crazy" Nick mused in amusement. At least now they didn't have to worry about anything illegal as they were all freshmen in high school. He had no idea what crowd Jay was hanging out with in high school, but he'd heard he was amongst the weird kids in the basement. The one thing he never predicted was Jay being part of the same crowd as Judd of all people.

Jay held his goods proudly, rummaging in the giant sack he had carried all the way here. Thankfully his driving had improved so he had managed to stow it in the back of his car. Somehow driving had made him more popular in school than before. "I brought all the goods, obvs cotton candy brandy for old times sake. But I sneaked into my dad's office and found a bunch of cash? So I used it to get stuff" Jay reflected. He didn't think his dad would care given he pawned off a bunch of their stuff and Luda was now living with Lola. So he might as well use the money to have fun with his friends.

Nick scoffed, staring at Jay in awe, he'd always thought Jay would someday end up in jail. But right now he was the coolest guy at the party "Jay you stole your dad's money to get booze for this party? That's fucking awesome" Nick chuckled in amusement.

"Fucking love this kid" Maury nodded in agreement. Jay placed a myriad of drinks on the table, cotton candy brandy, cheap beer of some kind, bottles of wine, and a myriad of unknown snacks. The teens all stared in approval but had no complaints.

"Looks like this party is finally getting started" a familiar voice replied in amusement. Matthew appeared in the doorway, adorned in his elf outfit. Decked to the halls, his fairy lights adding a bit of extra flare. Finally a high school party with familiar faces and stories to share. Jay felt his stomach flutter and his heart race, was he into elves? Did he find elves sexy? Honestly he had no idea. But what he did know that seeing Matthew dressed up like that made him horny and happy at the same time.

"So? You're dating a stoner who's also political and kinda the indie kid?" Matthew asked. He could see aspects of her dad in this guy which was another conversation for another day. The differences being he communicated better, respected her boundaries and didn't coerce Jessi into anything she didn't want. Sexually or substance wise.   Honestly he had no idea of what kind of guy Jessi was even into, they'd drifted apart lately and he had considered her his best friend for a period. The last thing he wanted was her getting into trouble. If she ever needed a shoulder to cry on he would always be there.

Jessi shrugged "I mean yeah, but he's funny, he makes me laugh. He's got mental health stuff too and his own depression kitty. He's really sensitive and actually respects my boundaries. I don't feel pressured y'know, I can just be myself" she mused. He struggled with communicating sometimes and his anxiety caused him to overthink, but he genuinely cared about her. He was honest with her about his mental health and they had a lot in common. She finally had a relationship built on equal footing.

"Wow, he sounds kinda sweet" Matthew smiled. It seemed Jessi had found her person in the most unlikely of places. She actually seemed happy, glowing almost. After her parents divorce, moving into a new place, her dad having another child with someone else. She been through a lot. He was kind of intrigued to meet Camden, what sort of guy he was, was he cute? Dorky? If he made Jessi glow this much he had to be a decent person.

Jessi stared at her drink reflectively "He kinda is, he's also been really great to talk to about the whole Ali thing in middle school". She felt comfortable enough talking to him about her past, her cringeworthy relationships, people who didn't treat her right. The could have been's, the mistakes all of it. He didn't judge her for it and they could even laugh about it. It felt stupid even laughing about it, what an awkward teenager she had even been.

Matthew gawked, wait hold on?! He'd heard about all of this from Nicks's perspective but not Jessi. Even Missy had been part of that gossip but nobody knew if it was true or not. Jessi was having a sexuality crisis? Coming out? A whole queer adventure? How had he missed this? "Ok, pause. We need more booze for this because what is this about you and Ali? That wasn't just a gossip train started by Birch?". He hurried briefly to a table and grabbed a bottle of wine, not caring if it was red or white. Just so long as they had more to drink. He sat comfortably against the wall with the drink and encouraged Jessi to speak. All this time he had felt like the only queer kid in Bridgeton middle school, at least until Ali showed up. Now it turned out that Jessi was one too. He could have made his own little group of queer friends and he never knew it?

"Wait? Is Jessie a lesbian? Bisexual? How many sexualities like vagina? I'm so confused!" Maury panicked in the background.

Jessi took a long slow sip of wine, god that felt good. She was happy in her current relationship and she was for the first time content. But she would never forget the way she felt with Ali and how it shaped her sexuality. How jealous and bitchy she had become and how she hated how she had ruined her friendship with Ali as a result. "I don't know, it was so different with Ali. Just... I could be myself, she made me feel warm and gooey inside. I wanted to kiss her, but I also wanted to be around her all the time. She made me feel so warm and yet like we could just fucking take on the world together. Sometimes all I could think about was kissing her and what the future could be".

"That sweet smelling form of sexiness, and nuzzled up against that hot little body" Connie sighed dreamily.

"Oh damn...." Matthew mused, while he had a crush on Jay, Jessi had been having an identity crisis and fell in love with her best friend. She'd fallen hard and she had put her feelings aside for the sake of the future. "Well, you seem happy with this new guy Camden? And he seems supportive and sweet. Sure, you may not have worked out with Ali and who knows maybe someday you might? You might also meet an entirely different new girl in college? What matters is that you accepted yourself and have your own journey" he encouraged. He could help her find her community, gay bars, pride and other forms of support. Everyone had their coming out journey, finding girls they liked, people they liked. Right now she was in high school, someday she would be in college. She still had time to figure shit out.

Jessi smiled "I am, and he is. You always say the right thing" she hummed. She leaned against Matthew in content "I missed you, it's good to chat shit with you again" she smiled. Her best friend.

Matthew smiled, Caleb was an entirely different friendship and one he wouldn't switch for the world. But having a supportive female friend he could gossip with, be vulnerable with and who understood his feelings. It was nice. Even with Jessi moving in with her mum, her life had changed but he was proud of her. "You know, me and Caleb have coffee mornings every other week. As long as you let me know the schedule, we can grab breakfasts or other rendezvous too" he smiled.

Jessi softened "I'd like that" she agreed. She took a slow sip of the wine "So, what about you and Jay? I heard he gave you a blowjob? I thought you two broke up?" she asked.

Matthew blushed, somehow that was the hottest thing he had ever done and the most humorous. Getting head from Jay while Lola was watching? It made it sexy and awkward at the same time. He'd really liked Jay, how spontaneous, unexpected, quirky and sincere he was, but there were awkward, uncomfortable moments too. He had tried to make Jay something he wasn't, while also never truly trying to understand one another. He'd never been as happy as he was with Jay. "I don't know, he and Lola... somehow work? But the crazy night drives? The sexy hookups? He made me genuinely laugh and when he wasn't being weird he was sincerely sweet. Yeah his Homelife is a mess, but he made me smile. We both have some growing up to do, I tried to change him into someone he wasn't" he mused. Jay wasn't a fashion oriented person, he wasn't into queer culture or music. Hell, did he even know any bisexual icons like Freddie Mercury? He needed a whole queer education. But then he had never helped him in that aspect. They'd made so many mistakes they both regretted and could have worked through but never tried. Night drives could have been fun, late night drive in's? Maybe pranking someone on occasion. Encouraging and supporting one another better.

Jessi chuckled "Fuck I guess both our love lives sucked" she laughed. "But isn't high school about being messy? Yeah Jay is weird but maybe... instead of trying to change him you find equal footing? Or try something new?". Matthew hummed, she was right. He'd joined the choir, he had learned a new fashion sense from Caleb, he was still learning about what he liked and what he didn't like. Maybe some of Jay's antics he didn't like, but some he could. Maybe Jay could enjoy his hobbies too and some he wouldn't. There was always a second chance. Jessi placed her hand on his shoulder supportively "Next time you need advice, ask me, or hell go to Ali. You don't have to face it alone".

Matthew softened, maybe if Jessi had been there he could have asked her for advice, so things wouldn't have been as messy this time. It was high school, you were supposed to make mistakes and do stupid shit right? But Jay also felt right, and they could take it slow this time.

"Heeeey... Matthew?" Jay questioned, it had been a while since they spoke. Especially since their breakup, he'd sobbed for weeks after, even in the shower. He'd cried so much he had to do it in secret so his brother's wouldn't tease him. He'd never felt like that about a boy before, yeah sure he'd fucked his pillows but they weren't real people. Lola had been fun and even crazy, but eventually they became toxic. They were too alike and at times she could be really mean to him and all they did was argue. But he always got excited to see Matthew, from that time he ran up to him, picked him up and kissed him in front of everyone; he loved that. As confused as he was, he kinda liked it when Matthew gave him a makeover. He loved seeing Matthew smile and he his laugh made him warm inside.

Matthew felt a shiver of fear and joy fill him all at once, the courage of the wine helping. How had Jay gotten hotter since they last met? And taller? Was he going through a growth spurt? God he was still so cute. That voice of his was like honey, he was so awkward sometimes it was adorable. The moments he was vulnerable he actually liked. There was more to Jay than the horny dork in middle school who was obsessed with magic.

"You wanna stick that tongue into those sexy caramel lips, grind on him like a dog in heat!" Maury growled in the background

Matthew blushed, awkwardly shifting, trying to summon courage from the wine "Hey....wanna sit?" he asked. He was free to tell him to fuck off and go talk to someone else. He owed Jay an apology and he still had feelings for him, they had so much they needed to unpack. Things were so different now, he was so different now.

Jay blushed, rubbing the back of his neck nervously and avoiding eye contact "Are you sure? I don't want to intrude?" he asked awkwardly, nodding at Jessi.

Jessi smiled, it was so obvious these two still liked each other. They were a cute couple when Jay wasn't being weird or creepy, and who knows? Everyone deserved a second chance. At least this time she could give Matthew advice on the matter. "You know I have to catch up with Ali, but if you need me or us. We'll be here as fast as the speed of light. But I shall leave you both to your private conversing" she teased. She got to her feet, carrying her cup of wine and ambled in the direction of Ali.

"Those two are so fucking cute, you gotta ask Matthew for gossip later. Because in high school, we care about that shit" Connie pressed.

Jay perched himself beside Matthew shyly, he'd changed his white shirt and waistcoat combo for a Santa outfit. He looked so painfully adorable it made Andrew's heart flutter like a bird. He was getting butterflies just looking at him. "Y'know... it was rather sweet of you to bring all the favours for this party" Matthew mused. He would have thought it was a BYOB sort of situation, but so far Jay was the only one to actually contribute. Jay was a naturally thoughtful person, he cared about all his friends, he tried giving. He wanted people to be involved even if his planning was chaotic and often messy. He put his heart into everything he did which was thoughtful.

Jay watched all his classmates drinking and laughing, all smiling. Nick was actually flirting with some of the girls, people were reminiscing. Missy seemed way more confident and people were joking around. It almost felt like old times. "Well, it's high school and from all those cheesy movies, I thought we should go all out" Jay mused.

Matthew looked stunned, had he heard him right? He thought someone like Jay had an internet history of explicit porn, magic youtube how to's and prank videos. But hearing he actually liked romantic comedies? That was something he never expected to hear "YOU... like rom-coms?" he stammered.

"How the hell did we miss that?" Maury questioned in disbelief

Jay rubbed the back of his neck bashfully, his family wasn't the best at communication. He didn't always enjoy the films his brothers liked but he wanted to be involved. So sometimes he watched films where people actually loved one another. He knew he'd get teased if he talked about it openly however, "My brothers would tear me to pieces of they knew, and my mum is too drunk to remember renting films. So I'd private browser and watch them online. I mean.. I don't get the whole plot sometimes, and I get waaaay too distracted by all the hot leads, but.. I like some of the happy endings?" Jay pressed.

Matthew laughed in amusement "Jay Bilzerian watching rom coms? I never thought I'd see the day. But you knoowwww... if you ever wanted to...go and see a movie together? I'd be down for that?" he asked. Movies were a great first date, alone in the dark and able to fool around with nobody seeing. Though his heart ached a little knowing Jay had to hide watching something as simplistic as a rom-com from his family, that had to suck.

Jay blushed, his eyes wide with surprise. Was Matthew? Was he flirting? Did he want to be his boyfriend again? Oh fuck yeah. His penis was getting hard just thinking about kissing him again. Wait no, he couldn't get too excited that would just freak him out. He took a deep breathe "Ok shit... I mean? Is this a date? Are you asking me on a date? I mean I want to if you do? But I promise I won't do any magic stuff. But... yeah I like movies..." he babbled. He really liked Matthew, in a way he hadn't liked someone in a long time. His stomach got all tingly around him, he felt so happy he could bounce off walls. Just spending time with him made him smile.

"He's nervous? Spouting word vomit? Asking you on a date? He likes you! Matthew he wants you!" Maury cheered

Matthew placed down his cup, reaching out to squeeze Jay's hand, smiling at him through low eyelids. God he was so cute when he babbled. "Yes Jay, I'm asking you on a date. This time, why don't we take it slow? Actually talk as well as make out? I may not like the whole magic schtick, but I'm sure you have other hobbies too, and they don't just include magic" he smiled. Magic wasn't too bad, I mean it was dorky in high school but part of that was what made Jay endearing. But talking about this stuff was important and he wanted to get to know Jay better this time.

Jay hummed, nobody had ever asked him about this before, so he couldn't talk about it. He never thought anyone would ever care enough. He reflected on what else he and Matthew might have in common. "I mean I like animals, not just my dog Luda. And I like food, and I love it when you get sassy and talk shit. And... I like the idea of watching movies with you. As well as kissing you when the sexy stuff happens..." Jay mused, a smirk appearing on his lips. Maybe not Paneera bread, but they could get other food too. Maybe Matthew would know some other great places to eat. They could sit and talk for hours about whatever they wanted.

Matthew smirked, he knew exactly where Jay's head was going "Ok Romeo, save it for the first date. I mean, I've never met your dog but, we can go to zoo's? Animal sanctuaries? We can Netflix and chill at my house, whatever you want?" he suggested. He could see Jay being utterly obsessed with certain animals which he found both adorable and worrying to think about. But the pictures would be adorable and memorable. Watching rom-com's on his bed while cuddling would be the best feeling, just as long as they were together.

Jay leaned forward, gazing into his eyes, Matthew could smell him, that all too familiar smell of cheap soap. "Respectfully Matthew, I'd fucking love to chill at your house, and whatever we do, all I'm gonna be able to think about is your lips on my lips anyway" he smirked. It's all he'd been able to think about all night.

"Oh, he's sexy and he's a sweet talker" Maury purred, he knew exactly what Matthew wanted to hear

Matthew felt his cheeks flush pink, how was it Jay was somehow an idiot and yet knew exactly how to flirt when it counted? The fact that he'd wanted to kiss him as soon as he entered the party, gave him stomach flips. "Oh shut up..." Matthew laughed, pushing Jay softly and laughing. He really knew how to flirt when he wanted to, and he had a heart of gold. Maybe it would be nice to try again. Actually try to talk to one another. And maybe do things they had never thought of before. Because when he looked into those chocolate eyes, he felt himself melt a little inside.

"Why don't you make me?" Jay teased, wiggling his eyebrows, repeating the line he used when they had a sleepover at school. Matthew snorted in amusement, mustering his courage before slowly climbing onto his lap as sexily as a wine drunk teenager in high school could. Wrapping his arms around Jay's neck to gaze into his pools of chocolate brown. He felt Jay's hands rest comfortably on his hips, as if they had always belonged there. He then leaned in, cupping Jay's face with his hands, pressing his lips to Jay's, humming fondly. The familiar softness and sweetness of the cotton candy brandy, mixed with the bitterness of wine. He felt his tongue intertwining with Jay's needy one, allowing himself to give into his feelings and urges. How right this just felt.

He pulled away slowly, his eyes glazed over with wine and lust, he'd missed this. He forgot how fun it felt being with Jay, just not caring. A wolf and a swan, maybe they could work together? "Merry Christmas Jay" he hummed.

Jay smiled, gazing up at him adoringly like the luckiest boy alive. Like his Christmas wish had just been granted without him knowing "Merry Christmas Matthew".

Chapter Text

So the finale had me really feeling for Jay, he's been through it and honestly I just want to hug him. So I said let’s fix that

Jay stared at the ground, shifting as he stared at his feet. How often was it that life actually threw him a second chance? Where he wasn't shit out of luck. Where he wasn't riding the high and immediately hit the low in the most devastating way possible. He couldn't believe what was happening, after the Christmas party he and Matthew were talking again. Matthew had apologised to him, or admitted he wanted to try again and actually try to find common ground. He'd kissed him under the mistletoe and according to every hallmark Christmas film he'd ever seen, that meant they were a couple right? Remembering Matthew's reaction to him enjoying romantic comedies. Maybe they could make that a future date together. The thought of being able to hold Matthew's hand again, sweep him into the air and kiss him, to cuddle him. He felt his stomach tingling with butterflies all over again. He felt whole, he felt excited, a future with Matthew felt stable. But then the anxiety hit, knowing what could happen if things didn't work out this time. He didn't want to rush into this and mess things up again, he didn't think he could cope with that kind of heartache again.

He was in high school, he'd found a new group of people, he was still exploring his sexuality, he was having fun. Having Matthew back would make things complete again. That sweet melodic voice, his sense of humour, his laugh, his sarcasm and snark. His friendship with Caleb was utterly adorable too, how much Matthew cared about him. They had a whole new means to bond. He was just so happy to have Matthew back. They'd rushed into things in the past, rather than talking about what they could work on, what they could change and what they liked, they'd ignored it and tried to be something they weren't. They could talk this time and actually be themselves. They could work on boundaries, self expression and more.

Matthew wanted a wolf, he wanted a wild, messy, fun loving guy with a strong sense of passion and self expression. But he wasn't into the whole magician schtick and driving like a maniac around the city. He didn't know what kind of food or flowers Matthew liked, but he appreciated romantic gestures. He knew he was an affectionate person and there were other hobbies to enjoy. Matthew had made it clear he wanted to try new things with Jay this time, he wanted to bond over mutual interests. He wasn't much into musical theatre or fashion, but he knew it meant something to Matthew, so he could at least try. They could find an alternative.

But so long as he lived at home, he could never have that privacy with Matthew. His brothers would always tease him, heckle him and would make Matthew uncomfortable. He wanted to try for Matthew and he didn't want his family to drive him away.

He'd bought a new mobile phone, which Jessi and Matthew had both kindly funded, so he could contact his friends whenever he wanted. Half of the time he only had his own company and his brothers never wanted to hang out. This way he could contact them whenever he wanted, so he'd never be alone. Instead of having to steal his brothers to make magician content. He knew his dad was in trouble again, given how he'd abandoned them again and half of their stuff was missing. The reality was his dad was an asshole, even if he loved him and admired him, it was becoming a reality. His dad had sold the last of their stuff, all they had was a dirt hole in the back garden. Luda had run away from home to live with Lola, the one good thing he had in his life was gone. Even Kurt and Val were soon going to be attending college, meaning he'd be all on his own. Would his mum even be happy with him living at home?

Matthew mumbled, rubbing his eyes as he heard the familiar buzz and ding of his phone as a text came through. He didn't recall making plans today and it was still god forsaken early, was the sun even up yet? Was it Caleb asking about their annual coffee mornings? He knew how anxious he got and he was one of Caleb's emergency support contacts. Had Jessi sent him a meme or had some new gossip? Or was Jay sending him a weird or adorkable message?

"OPEN IT! OPEN IT!" Maury pressed eagerly, practically leaping with excitement, his tail wagging happily.

Matthew picked up his phone, a smile forming on his face as he saw it was from Jay. God he loved that boy, something about him just made Matthew all fuzzy inside. Those deep brown eyes of his made him melt inside. Yeah he was a dork but he was endearingly sweet.

"Your ex boyfriend recently turned boyfriend again texted you!" Maury cheered, god he loved these two together. Somehow the perfect blend of horny and adorable.

Matthew opened the text, wondering if it would end up being a sext, flirty message or some nonsensical drabble. You could never tell when it came to Jay, he was unpredictable; but to his surprise, his heart dropped instead.

Jay-Hey Matthew, husband? Boyfriend? Lover? So... Luda ran away from home after Dad tried to sell him, classic dad. Uh....mum lost her wig? Dad sold a bunch of our stuff and our house pretty much looks like a haunted hovel. Um... so I think I should get out of here before Kurt and Val go to college.

The longer he read it, the more desperate Jay sounded. He knew Jay had a screwed up life, a poor support system, but this was the worst it had been. His dog had ran away, his dad had tried to sell the family pet. God knows what prized possessions Jay had actually lost this time. He was so happy Jay had chosen him as the person to trust, but also devastated as to the reason why "Oh Jesus" Matthew trailed off. His heart broke for Jay it really did, how had his life gotten so shitty so fast? He was such a sweet person, how the hell was he related to such neanderthals?

"This is a lifeline! You have to help the boy!" Maury pressed. He needed to use his big gay heart to rescue his beloved. Help save him from the mess that was his life.

Matthew mused, Jay didn't belong in that house, he was so much better than his family. He had prospects, he had a future, he had dreams. He could be someone, anything. His parents had failed him, so many people in his life had failed him, he wouldn't be that person. His mum was a depressed alcoholic having an affair with Coach Steve. His dad was a scheming, cheating, sleazy dirtbag who never acted like a father. His brothers were equally messed up, manipulative and bullies. Jay was the only redeemable one thus far, he just made Matthew's heart feel like it was being squeezed. He couldn't live with his family, and he couldn't be adopted by the Birches.

But then, why not just help him find a place of his own? He wasn't the first runaway teen to get out of a toxic environment. "Hey, what if we got Jay an apartment? Surely we can find something affordable, he can get benefits from the state due to his ADHD. He can get the money from his dad and the Birches can help out too" Matthew suggested. It would take a lot of saving, planning and processing but it would work. Jay would finally have his own space, he could create his own safe space, a little room full of his things. He could express himself on his own terms and they could all breathe easier knowing he was safe. And none of his family could know where he moved to. He could temporarily live with friends until it was all through, so he could at least be in a safer environment.

"Plus, more privacy if you guys wanna get freaky" Maury wiggled his eyebrows

Matthew felt a rush of blood fill his face, images and fantasies of he and Jay twisted together in his room. Imagining breaking in the bed to Jay's new prospective flat. The memories they could make in a little love nest, he could even get Jay a housewarming present. He could get a spare key made. All the plans for the future they could have. I mean moving out and finding your own way was scary enough, but at this point Jay felt invincible with the amount of things he'd done before now. If that didn't phase him this wouldn't. Jay was still in high school at sixteen, but hell he could drive a car. Some people got out even younger.

He felt a sense of earnestness fill him, fuck he was doing this. He wanted Jay safe and he had said he wanted to do it right this time, so he immediately picked up the phone to call Jessi.

"Wait, so we're moving Jay out of his house? To another house" Jessi asked. When Matthew had explained everything she had been caught off guard. She loved being involved but this felt like a huge leap since their reunion at the Christmas party a month ago. Jay's home life was messy, she knew all too well as someone who briefly dated. She empathised with Jay and she wanted to help, but this was happening really fast.

Jessi was his best friend, she'd endured enough of her own shit to know how it felt to be at your lowest. From her depression, to her parents divorce and more. He wouldn't let Jay's life become a train wreck, not if he had anything to do with it. Jay deserved better and everyone could see that, he was more than his parents. "He's desperate, his dad went def-con one and sold all of their stuff. He's lost his dog and honestly I hate seeing him like this" Matthew pressed.

Jessi observed him, he was frantic with worry, she could hear the anxiety mosquito buzzing in his brain. She knew he would never be able to live with it if he ignored Jay's cry for help. He had wanted to try again and he was putting in the effort this time. He couldn't quit or run away when it got hard, he couldn't ignore the bad for the good. Jessi softened "Aww Matthew, you really like him" she teased.

The term love was thrown around way too easily these days, but yes he had to agree. He did love Jay, there was no other word to describe how he felt. Matthew blushed "Jessi, I am rescuing this poor boy from becoming his brothers. Of course I like him". He was willing to throw himself into the wolves den just to save Jay, because he knew Jay deserved better.

Jessi hummed, it had really sucked when her parents had divorced, but upon reflection she could see they were so much happier than before. Her dad seemed truly happy with Caitlin, more so than he had in a long time. Her mother though infuriated by Greg and only tolerating him in her life for the sake of Jessi having a relationship with her father. She seemed truly happy embracing her bisexuality and newfound dating life with women. Sometimes putting yourself first and ensuring your own happiness never came easily. "I think it's really sweet of you, doing this for Jay. Who knows maybe this might make him a somewhat normal person?" Jessi reflected.

Matthew shifted, Jay could never fit the definition of normal, but he preferred it that way. What he could do was help nurture him into a more functional person with healthier habits. "He's...." he tried to find the right words, how he really felt about Jay. They were complete opposites but they brought out the best in each other. "The magic was kinda dorky, sometimes his word vomit is honestly confusing. But... he's... sweet. He's so genuinely himself, he deserves better" he mused. He may have not been a fan of magic or the company Jay had kept, but he knew how much it meant to him. The one positive distraction in the hell that was his life. He had absolutely no idea what was going on in his head sometimes.

Jessi smiled, Matthew had crushed on and dated several people over the years. He'd been too similar to Aiden and Matthew got bored of him really fast. He'd had crushes on various people but somehow Matthew had been his happiest with Jay. His eyes shone differently, he seemed more alive, energetic and even unpredictable. The fact that Jay even referred to him as his ex husband, showed how deeply he cared about Matthew. Who knew where their relationship would be headed but she was happy for them. "You know, you two might be the healthiest relationship you've ever had" she hummed. Jay so sincerely loved Matthew and actually wanted to impress him, Matthew saw the good in Jay and just wanted to make him happy. However, the process of moving wasn't going to be easy. I mean how much stuff did Jay even own? How prepared did they need to be for this? "I can ask Camden and the others for some help, Jay has a car? I think? Whatever we can get all hands on board" Jessi reflected.

Matthew turned to Maury with a sense of panic "Maury is this actually happening? Am I moving Jay out of his house?". Was he making the biggest mistake of his life? Or possibly the messiest adventure so far?

"Hell yeah you are! You're saving that hot piece of ass and placing him in a castle" Maury cheered. Who cares if it was messy, if it was chaotic or stupid, what mattered was that it felt right.

Matthew felt his chest puffing up, like a male songbird about to put on the performance of his damn life. He was the perfectly pitched knight in shining armour with the voice of an angel, about to save his adorkable messy and hyperactive magic boyfriend from the castle he was imprisoned in. "Damn right I am" Matthew smirked.

Jay, Matthew, Jessi, Ali, Missy, Camden and Nick all stood outside Jay's house. Judd stood by his car arms folded and he watched the scene unfold. He had to admit he was impressed by these tweens being stupid enough to actually enter the Bilzerian house for the sake of their friend. He'd heard nothing but the worst from the older brothers, for all he loved chaos and being an antihero, those two took it too far. If they even tried anything with these kids while he was here, they would pay for it.

"Uh... is this where Jay lives? I thought it might be nicer?" Missy mused, strangely for all the years that they had been classmates she had never seen his house. She felt her skin prickle just looking at it.

Nick sighed, remembering in middle school when he had been for a sleepover and Jay's weird brothers tried to make them play Jizzcuit. He generally avoided this place and for good reasons. Now that he was taller and more intimidating, at least Jay's brothers wouldn't bully him as much. He was still getting used to his growth spurt and all the attention from it. "Every time I come here it somehow gets worse" Nick mused.

"Surprised you even made it out alive given what a scrawny dickless bitch you used to be" Judd teased. Nick still whined, was still a crybaby, but he had height now and he'd become charmer to girls. He'd heard about him hooking up with Devin LeSeVin, one of the most popular girls in her year. It seemed his little brother was finally getting his dick wet.

Matthew had to agree with Nick, he too had visited this place and the experience was memorable. But he couldn't allow himself to become distracted, they had come here for a reason and they needed to see it through. He placed his hands on his hips, puffing out his chest "Well, take a good look boys because this is the last time we have to see this travesty again" Matthew stated.

All the commotion caught the attention of the boy Matthew had come all this way for. Jay got up from his seat outside the house, perched on the front step with a look of genuine surprise. His brown eyes lit up with excitement and curiosity, "Matthew? Guys? What's? Are we having a party?" he asked curiously.

"Hey little dude, we're here for the housewarming" Camden smiled, approaching to give him a fist bump.

Jay recalled Jessi mentioning she got a new boyfriend in High school, he seemed nice; very down to earth, mellow and awkward. But what did he mean by housewarming? Had he missed a celebration or something? "House warming? But my house isn't on fire?" Jay questioned.

Matthew stepped forward, his eyes shining brightly, imagining himself in a perfectly shiny suit of armour, riding in like the fabulous hero that he was. He reached out an arm and pointed at Jay "Jay Bilzerian, pack your shit and get your ass in that car, cos we are outta here!" Matthew stated proudly. He wasn't going to leave him here to endure his brother's torments, his father's disappointments. No, that was never his responsibility, he was just a kid.

"Holy shit Matthew that was the most epic thing you have ever done. If this boy doesn't kiss you right now I will" Maury cheered.

"You heard him spitfire, now pack your shit and be quick about it, or you're walking" Judd repeated. Luckily he hadn't had to drive all of these kids to Jay's. But he had a feeling more of them would ask for a lift back and he didn't plan on carpooling everyone. Petrol wasn't cheap and he knew half of these kids lived in various areas.

Jay was stunned, taken aback by Matthew's gesture, excitement filling his face as he nearly began to bounce on the spot. Matthew had to be the coolest guy he'd ever seen. It was kind of making him horny too "We're running away together? Like a gay Bonnie and Clive?" Jay beamed. He'd texted Matthew hoping to vent and maybe someone would listen? So he felt less crappy about it all. But he never expected him to come and get him.

Matthew smiled, aside from not committing crimes and causing chaos, it seemed fitting "Well yeah, kinda..." he chuckled. Come hell or high water he was getting Jay out of this place and he was doing it today.

Nick stepped forward, while he was happy for Jay that he'd found someone who genuinely loved him for who he was. He didn't want to waste time here, especially not if Jay's brothers started heckling them. If jay was going to make any life changing decisions they would be there to help him. "We're all pitching in to help you move out, Matthew had the idea first. We're going to get you a flat of your own" Nick explained. His parents had been enthusiastic to help out. His mother had been particularly relieved and his mother almost suggested Jay live with them. All three Birch children had protested against this.

Judd had begrudgingly offered his services via his car, but only because he wanted to check out the interior of the Bilzerian residence. But it was as kind as a gesture as you would get from Judd so nobody complained. He and Nick had slowly formed a better brotherly bond, now that Nick had gone through his growth spurt, gained some confidence and put up boundaries. No longer referring to him as a whiny bitch.

Jay's gaze fell upon all of his friends standing around him, he had no idea they cared so much. They had all come here for him? And it wasn't some form of a prank? "Wait? What?" Jay questioned.

Matthew stepped forward, he knew this was a big step and a huge change in Jay's life. He knew he really loved his mum, and for god knows what reason was incessant on forming bonds with his brothers. But this was for the best, not all changes had to be bad or scary. Whatever happened, he would help him through it. "Jay, I know how scary this prospect seems, so many changes. But... I think this one is for the best, and I'll be there every step of the way. I'll even give you decoration pointers". He knew all the best vintage places to go, Caleb could help him out with fashion and decor. This would be fun.

"Really? So you could even have sleepovers? And I can show you where the magic happens?" Jay beamed. Judd smirked in the background, catching onto the dirty joke and snorting loudly. Amused and impressed by how forward and yet unaware Jay had been. Jessi snorted in the background, cupping her hand over her mouth, mirroring Judd's amusement. Jay was obviously talking about his past love of practical magic, but the unintentional innuendo was hilarious.

"I'd say get a room but you obviously have that planned" Ali teased. She remembered when Matthew had made the gesture at a new year's party in front of everyone. The next time they got together it was a high school Christmas party. They had a flare for the dramatic.

Matthew blushed, Jay hadn't meant to make a dirty pick up line it but it actually worked, it was so dorky it was adorable. Jay really lacked a filter when it came to his brain and his mouth, but much of that was due to his ADHD and being unmedicated. But sometimes it could be sincerely sweet if not surprising. He had a feeling Jay was as good with his hands as he was at making out with people.

"Oh my god wife this boy up already! Husband him up? Whatever! Kiss him again!" Maury yelled in the background

Matthew blushed but he felt a warmth in his belly, ignoring Maury's eager cheers. Seeing Jay so utterly thrilled at their prospective future and having a second chance. Happily leaving his toxic home life to become better. Who said they couldn't have sleepovers? And you know what, sometimes Jay's magic wasn't as terrible as it seemed. He seemed pretty decent at magically giving Matthew a boner. "Yes Jay, we can have sleepovers, we can do whatever you want" Matthew smiled. His body felt like it was tingling all over, was he excited? His stomach had butterflies and he was internally jumping for joy. Holding back the urge to sing at the top of his lungs like Julie Andrews in the sound of music. Helping Jay through this process was exciting, they could even take long drives again in his car.

"Alright numbnuts, I have a small window of my services. Now pack your shit into the car and make it snappy. If you see anything interesting grab it, I'm going to sneak through their shit" Judd barked. The longer they were here, the more time it would take to drive back. He had enough beef with both older Bilzerian brothers, for many reasons. He avoided them like the plague and honestly despised them both, he already had beef with Val for dating his sister. But their little brother was ok, kind of fun even, the guy was a chaotic, fun loving little gremlin with good intentions. He'd heard Nick talking about all the stuff Jay's brothers did and though he laughed about it, he reminded himself to punch Val in the face again sometime. For all he bullied Nick for being a baby and previously coddled by their parents, he respected him putting up boundaries as he got older. Finally growing a backbone and standing up to their parents, especially since their mum went through their belongings. He was growing into his own person and he was proud of his brother, but he would never admit that aloud.

Camden leaned towards Jessi with a low voice, he knew Judd. He spent time with the weird kids, he listened to heavy metal and heavy rock, he was an anarchist and a punk. He knew Judd was insanely popular with loads of girls in their year too "Hey Jess, Nick's bro is kinda... scary" Camden mumbled.

The familiar red locks of her hormone monstress wrapped around her "Yeah, but he gets your panties wetter than a beach party in summer" Connie teased.

Jessi blushed, her brief crush on Judd had been an awkward one, then her crush on Ali, and meeting Camden. Honestly her whole dating and crush history was awkward as hell. She still had long-term feelings for Ali and she did admit Judd gave her butterflies. Stealing his shirt was never a good idea, but then what girl hadn't done something completely awkward and stupid. Even Ali had admitted she found Judd hot. She just hoped she outgrew the awkward phase, maybe now that she was entering high school she might have a chance. Hell, maybe Judd would notice her someday, but for now, it would remain a fantasy. She took a shaky breath "He's... complicated" she muttered.

Instead of getting mad or accusing her, Camden nodded understandingly, it seemed like a touchy subject he didn't want to go into.

Jay stared at the boxes of books, posters and the other small trinkets he owed in the back of Judd's car. Kurt and Val hadn't even offered to help, were they even home? Would they even notice he was gone? He'd thought there would be more? Did he really own so little in life? Realising how easy it was for him to just leave. He doubted his mum or brothers would even notice he was gone.

He felt a supportive hand on his shoulder, squeezing softly. He turned to see the tender blue eyes of Matthew gazing at him "Jay? You doing ok?" Matthew asked gently, it was kind of depressing his whole life was summed up to one mere box. Had he never been given a present? Nothing of value? Nothing memorable?

Jay shrugged, he'd always bought his own stuff, given hand me downs from his brothers, or occasionally gotten vintage of whatever he could afford. That is what their dad didn't pawn off or had gotten broken. But now he didn't have to worry about that anymore. "Yeah, I guess, I just thought there'd be... more?" Jay mused.

Matthew nodded, he couldn't put into words how sad it was, that Jay owned so little. Wondering how much had been broken, stolen or pawned off. He really had a messed up life. "Well, that's why you have me, you have us. We can make sure you get the best designed flat of your dreams" Matthew encouraged. Whatever he wanted, he could even get a bisexual flag to hang on his wall. They could get some cool vintage pillows, a whole new wardrobe.

Jay softened "So it won't be stolen, secondhand or mugged?" Jay questioned. Sometimes his dad or brothers just came home with some really cool stuff. He got his pick of what he could get ahold of. He was often envious of the homes his friends lived in due to all the cool stuff they had. He heard loads of people in their year talking about vintage, but all knew about vintage was the wine his mum liked.

Matthew tried not to make a face that expressed sadness and panic. God the more he talked about his life the worse it got. "Moving on from that...." Matthew pressed, not wanting to think of where all of Jay's belongings came from. He had coffee mornings with Caleb on several days of the week, he could ask him for pointers. "Caleb is surprisingly a fashion 101, Jessi lives for thrifting, Ali is just constantly hyping people up. And honestly it would be fun to see the second phase you have in store". They could plan a shopping trip and coffee afternoon, all of them hanging out like old times. They could even take cringey pictures together and post them on social media.

"Alright out of the way Gaylord's, unless you want your fingers to be turned into mincemeat" Judd warned, slamming the boot shut in one swing. He recalled Nick mentioning that Jay hated dated a guy at some point, he had no idea it was a musical theatre kid. They seemed happy together though. The same annoyingly cutesy couple.

Jay approached Judd cautiously, he often got shot down when he asked for favours, so he'd probably say no. "Uh, Mr scary nick's brother? Can I squeeze in and get a ride?" Jay asked curiously.

Judd glanced at him, he may have found half of Nick's friends annoying as all hell, but Jay was one of the few he could actually tolerate. After the day this kid had been through he could cut him some slack. He was an asshole but he wasn't heartless. However, he had ground rules, regardless of who it was. He pointed a firm finger at Jay "Don't mess with my shit and don't mess anything up" he warned.

Jay nodded, Kurt and Val got weird if he got nosey about their stuff too. But he would have gotten mad if anyone touched his pillows or magic stuff too. Nobody liked it when someone rummaged through your belonging. "Got it hands to myself" Jay replied, unless you counted holding Matthew's hand. Judd grunted and let him and Matthew climb into the car.

"Matthew, this is the jackpot, Judd is essentially the Punk Goth equivalent of Jay. You have two crazy hotties beside you right now" Maury cheered

Matthew blushed, why did Maury have to show up at the worst of times? But then today had been strange enough so why not? Truth be told he had no idea what his type even was. Nick had always been a dork, but it seemed lately he was having a glow up. From joining the basketball team, getting taller and even knowing how to flirt. Super confusing. He knew about Jessi's brief and confusing crush on Judd, how she even went as far as stealing his shirt. As weird as it was he couldn't blame her for it, and he could see it, the dark hair, moody attitude and give no fuck's personality. And he could see the outline of his abs through that black shirt, he'd heard that Judd worked out and he sharpened his own knives. Just what did he get up to with a body like that. Comparing him to the hyperactive Jay, yeah, he could totally see it. Why even question it at this point. He had a thing for crazy boys.

Jay stared at the box of belongings in front of him, it felt so small in comparison. He knew he should start unpacking and trying to rehome everything but it was too much right now. The more he thought about the more anxious he got. He somehow thought he had more, and then remembered how his dad sold a lot of it. Should he laugh about that? Cry or get angry? He didn't know how to feel. He'd become so used to it that he didn't know how to react.

Jessi's mum Shannon had been kind enough to give him a spare room while he looked for a place of his own. It was warm, colourful, the bed was comfy and he didn't have to share. The fridge was full of food, the people here were nice and Lola was Jessi's neighbour. She'd gotten temporary custody as his legal guarding and foster parent until Jay settled. Stating how she had more room to spare than the Birches and she didn't want them to overload themselves. She'd been empathetic to Jay's coming out and lack of support in that aspect to, knowing Jessi was someone familiar and also someone who could offer advice and comfort. Stating how maybe some feminist influence and feminine energy would help mellow Jay out, compared to the toxic home-life he was used to. Having moved out from her old house after selling it, she was eager to give Jay his own pointers. Empathetic to his chaotic household, misogynistic father, shitty brothers and alcoholic mother.

However, she was no pushover and Jay would need to adapt to changes. She ensured to set ground rules and boundaries and gave him his space, but made sure he checked in with her. Treating him with the same fairness she would Jessi. Making time for the days they could help him get more stuff. Stating they could go to Target or TK max to get him a bunch of discounted clothes and belongings. Which Jay had been rather enthusiastic about. She too like Mrs Birch, set up a regular prescription for his ADHD, making sure nobody else got their hands on it. Explaining to Jessi how the medication worked, how it helped Jay and how things would be going forward. So he could focus better in school, feel calmer and actually do better.

Jessi knocked on the bedroom door, understanding if Jay wanted to be alone, today had been a lot for him. "Hey Jay, you coping ok?" Jessi asked, she knew how scary, confusing and stressful moving could be, so many changes to cope with all at once. He was dating Matthew again, he was moving out, he was currently her roommate for a brief period. High school was happening all so fast for him. For all Jay could be annoying and kind of weird, she was glad he was making changes.

Jay shifted, in the past he'd been bullied by his brothers for being vulnerable, as they had said emotions were gay. But it felt good to talk to someone. It was quiet, no sounds of his mother's drunken rambles, no dog barking, none of his brothers doing illegal stuff. No fights to use the shower, no dares to earn his brother's respect. No being bullied or pressured by anyone. He could have his own space and never have to worry about being bothered by anyone. He even had his own room and bed. He didn't have to share. He completely understood if she was uncomfortable, I mean she'd only just become a big sister to a half sister. She had her own life to worry about outside of him. "I dunno, um... thanks Jessi, for letting me room with you. I guess this makes us... family?" he babbled.

Jessi softened, she already had a half sister now, so yeah this could make Jay her temporary step brother. As long as he didn't make it weird. She would try and support him as best she could. Jessi smiled "Kinda, you know just remember to knock and also be self aware now that you live in a functional family" she pressed. She sat beside him on the bed. "You don't have to fight anyone for food, you can have your own space. You can FaceTime Matthew whenever you want, he can come over whenever you want. As long as you inform my mum of your location etc, you're home" she smiled.

Jay stared, he could openly call Matthew his boyfriend and not have to worry about his brothers being cruel about it. He could talk about his hobbies, he could have friends over. He could have hugs from people whenever he wanted, all of that sounded so alien, so strange. He didn't have to fight his brothers for the last scrap of food, he didn't have to squeeze everything into one small room. And he could see Matthew.

Jessi wiggled her eyebrows  "My mum is the boss of real estate, she knows what's good. She'll get you a great flat of your own" she smiled. She'd check in whenever possible.

Jay squeezed his pillow, in the past he would have used one for masturbating, but this one just felt nice to cuddle. Burying his face into the warm material "I never thought high school would be so... complicated" Jay mused.

She was friends with the burnouts of high school and had become one of the weird kids, but she was happy. They looked out for her and they cared about her "Strap in, you're here for the ride" Jessi laughed in amusement.

"You're uh... new boyfriend? He seems... nice?" Jay replied, he was friendly even. He didn't bully him or demean him the way Val or Kurt did. He didn't have to do strange things to earn their affections.

"Camden? Yeah he's...." Jessi smiled, her stomach twisting into butterflies "...he's the best" she agreed. He was the sweetest, she hadn't met someone as sweet as him in a long time. "But you and Matthew huh?" she teased.

Jay shifted "Uh Jessi? If I FaceTime Matthew, would you help me with what to say? My heads a mess right now and I know I'd just default to sex jokes" he replied. As funny as they would be he would rather not just make dirty jokes in case Matthew got uncomfortable.

Jessi gawked, was the Jay Bilzerian asking her for dating advice? She never thought she would see the day "Of course" she agreed.

Matthew couldn't stop smiling, Jay and Jessi were temporary roommates for the time being until Jay got his own place. It would only be another two years until he was eighteen and Shannon was saving up for him. But Jay was finally free, he was out of that damn house and he was somewhere Matthew could visit him all the time. He finally had a relationship he could see going somewhere, the future was unknown but it made it more exciting.

"You love that boy so much you want to reenact every rom-com known to mankind" A voice teased

"Hell yeah I do, even the god awful ones" Matthew mused, before he noticed the pink glow emitting from his room. He sat up in a panic, turning over and nearly falling off his bed. Before he noticed the glowing bug floating beside him with a glowing smile. "Who... who the hell are you?" he panicked. Just when he thought he understood puberty another weird monster appeared in his life.

"Oh sweetie, I'm your lovebug! Walter" the cheerful bug chuckled, unfazed by his panic.

Matthew blinked, love bug? He thought that was just a phrase. They really existed? He had one? Since when? Reflecting back to the Christmas kiss, this afternoon with Jay. "Love bug? Then... I really do love Jay" Matthew blushed, he never thought he'd fall for a boy this hard. Twice.

"You wanna grind against that sweet little coco butt and breathe in the smell of his hair. You wanna kiss him until you run out of breath. You wanna go skinny dipping at night and then sneak back into your room at sunrise! You want to leave hickies all over him so he can't hide them" Walter beamed.

Matthew blushed, he couldn't lie all of those things did sound enticing and he did want to. He loved the taste of Jay's lips, how skilled he was. Jay was ironically his first kiss and the best one he'd ever had. Remembering how jealous he got when he found out Jay was hooking up with Charles Lu, yeah he was possessive. He wanted to make memories with Jay, ones that counted. He wanted to be stupidly romantic, he wanted to be the couple that posted couples pictures. He wanted to hold hands in public and make everyone jealous. Hell he could take Jay to his first pride parade.

"Wait? You got a love bug? Matthew! I'm so proud of you!" Maury sobbed from the background. He never thought it would happen, he'd had so many chaotic moments with love. Of all the couples he'd seen, Matthew and Jay were his favourite.

Matthew took a deep breath trying to focus, this didn't make any sense. He'd had enough failures in dating, enough cringe worthy memories. From coming out to his parents, dumping Aiden for Jay. None of them he was proud of. "Ok, was this because I helped Jay move out? Because he's living with Jessi now? I did those things because I care about him" Matthew mumbled.

"Honey, you imagined yourself as a knight storming a castle, you call him by his full name. You offered to buy him a wardrobe and comforted him the whole time. That boy gives you butterflies and you're head over heels for him" Walter reminded him.

He'd nearly called him by his full name when they pulled up at the house. He'd summoned all of their friends to come and help Jay move out. He'd held nothing back and had even been prepared to fight one of his brothers. He'd realised how headstrong he'd been all day. "Oh fuck... I really did get all dramatic and cheesy didn't I?" Matthew reflected, laughing in amusement.

"You love him so much you get butterflies" Walter wiggled his eyebrows

"I love him so much I rode home with him in Nick's brother's car while he broke several laws" Matthew reminded him. His possible crush on Nick's brother would have to be put on hold to be pondered on. Because what was even his type anymore?

"Oh... the scary older Birch? That's your type too? I'll make note of that" Walter teased.

"So.. you're here to help me? To help my relationship with Jay?" Matthew asked. Maybe this time it would go right, Maybe having a love bug would make it better. Proof they had a future together.

"Baby boy, I'm here to help you get the man of your dreams and finally get what you deserve. But yes I'm here to help you out with Jay" Walter agreed

Chapter Text

Jay sat on the quilted sheets of his new bed, he wasn't used to living in such quiet, so he'd put on a playlist to help him sleep. Something like white noise or some quiet music. He was worried Jessi or her mum would laugh, but they had been really supportive. They tried to make him as comfortable as possible, and he could get a lift with Jessi to school in her mum's car or with her friends. He actually felt included and that he had a voice. Nobody minded when he rambled and thought he was funny. He didn't have to hide in his room all the time, he could wander as he liked, he could ask for things, feel included in activities. Jessi and her mum had even suggested game nights, including Uno and other games which he enjoyed. They respected that he wasn't religious or raised that way, but still included him in celebrations if he wanted to. He'd forgotten what it was like to have a healthy role model in the house and Shannon was even teaching him about Feminism. Realising that Jay was merely being influenced by his negligent father. Jay enjoyed helping Shannon in the kitchen, who appreciated the help.

He'd never really had many friends outside of his dynamic with Nick and Andrew. So meeting Jessi's boyfriend, Ali and Lulu, it had been different but not in a bad way. He was sort of friends with Judd now due to hanging out so much, and finding various people who didn't mind his high energy was comforting. Camdon was friendly with Jay and even supportive of his adjustment, he'd become a good friend to him. He didn't pressure him into trying weed and they could talk to each other in a calm way. Lulu was protective over him and if anyone made fun of him she was immediately on their case, no questions asked. Ali was always there to have fun, cause chaos and act immature with, while relating to being queer. Today he was on his own for a period, Shannon had a date, which he and Jessi had helped prepare her for. And Jessi had gone on a date with Camden and promised to be back later. They trusted him not to cause chaos while they were gone. The house was so quiet, his brain was adjusting to not hearing his mum's drunken antics or his brothers getting into trouble. He didn't have to ask for attention or affection, and nobody treated him like a nuisance. Jessi's mum had explained his brain was processing adapting to a new environment and suggested therapy, explaining he could just talk to another adult. He needed to get all his feelings out if he wanted to move past his trauma. And all of this was because of Matthew, he'd been the one to help him, instead of ignoring his text he had immediately gathered their friends to help. He'd been the one to rescue him from his family, he'd been the one to help make changes. To help him move in with Jessi's family and become fostered. While he sometimes missed his mum and brothers, he was happier here. He just wondered if they missed him at all too.

He knew it sounded mushy and stupid, but he really liked Matthew, something about him just made him feel so whole. He'd never been in such a stable relationship with someone before, let alone another boy. He didn't have to hide or pretend to be something he wasn't, the could just be himself. He didn't even mind being called Jay's husband. Suddenly, he felt a bright light behind him, warm and pink, glowing. Illuminating the whole room like he was in a disco or something.

"Wow, has Shannon gotten new lights or something?" Jay questioned, It wasn't her headlights from the car was it? He looked around realising it was coming from behind him. He turned to see a rather pretty but unusual looking bug floating behind him. "What the fuck?"! Jay yelled in panic, falling off the bed. He tried to calm himself and put the pieces together, had he fallen asleep? Was he dreaming?

"Oh shit! Sorry I wanted to make a good impression, I'm not so great at this" Emmy apologised. She'd never been prepared on how was the best way to approach a human before. She'd only had a handful of clients and they were all women, he was her first male client and a teenager to boot. She'd tried to come prepared this time and actually do her homework, thus avoiding any problems. She'd heard about his past relationship with Matthew which ended badly, but suddenly revived after a Christmas party. In many ways she related to Jay's complicated love life, her own desire for validation and genuine connection. She couldn't say no to the offer to work with him. Matthew seemed very sweet on paper, they had promise and they seemed really healthy for each other. Just reading their files had made her all warm and fuzzy inside.

"Who the fuck are you? Am I tripping? Is this because of that funny medicine Jessi's mum made me take?" Jay protested. He'd never seen bugs before, but he had humped his pillows. How had she gotten into Jessi's mum's flat? How had she gotten into the building? Was she magic? Was she going to rob them?

Emmy blinked, ok he was a fast talker, but she could work with this. If she was going to handle his high energy she needed to be blunt. "Ok, No this isn't because of the Ritalin that Jessi's mum gives you and please for the love of god keep taking those..." she warned. She then took a deep breath "I'm your new love bug" Emmy smiled. She knew Jay was struggling and he was adjusting, he'd had some big changes happen in his life and she was here to help. She too was bisexual like him and understood all the complexities of attraction and romance. But she was here to help him.

Jay blinked "My wha? Love bug?" he questioned

Emmy smiled "Yeah you know as in bitten by the love bug?" she teased

Wait, his dad said that romance was a lie conjured up by corporations and needy women to entrap men. But then his dad also cheated on women and helped scumbags hurt good women. He needed to stop thinking like his dad and remember what Shannon had told him.

He tried to process what this magical glowworm was telling him, thinking back on his past memories. Then it hit him all at once, Jay stared, so was this because of Matthew helping him move into Jessi's house? What happened because of the Christmas party? When he got horny for Matthew in an elf costume? They'd managed to actually talk about shit and started being honest with one another. When he raided his dad's stash before he left as a last fuck you for being a shitty parent. When he admitted to watching rom com's. If she was a love bug then she had come here because.... oh shit.

"Wait, are you, is this... does this mean I love Matthew?" he questioned

Emmy grinned in amusement "well you certainly seemed to love him at the Christmas party? and you immediately reached out to him after asked him for help. The premise of seeing him again as a couple and having a new roommate seems to do it for you?" she teased.

Jay felt a tingle in his stomach, sitting there with lost hope on his doorstep and seeing Matthew appear with their friends, holding out an olive branch. That kiss under the mistletoe and how right it just felt, how he hadn't wanted to be anywhere else in that moment. Looking into his eyes, it all just seemed to make sense. How he would follow Matthew to the ends of the earth, come hell or high water. How he wanted to protect Matthew in return for all the good thing's he'd done for him. How elated, relieved and content he had felt with Matthew, compared to how angry, confused and always conflicted he felt around Lola. Now here he was in a brand new place.

Emmy's but began to glow a light pink hue again "See, you got my butt going again" she stated, just thinking about him made Jay go all gooey inside. She'd never met someone so smitten with a person before.

Jay stared at the bug sat near him, so she reacted when he got mushy or felt strong affection for Matthew? But then what was her role her aside from glowing? "So.... what do you do exactly?" he asked. He'd never had a love bug before, how did this even work? He didn't have one with Jessi, he didn't have one with Lola, so this was a new feeling for him. What was their dynamic?

Emmy rubbed her chin, she had to admit he was one of the more unusual cases she had worked. But she was ready for a challenge and she could learn something from this. "Well, I'm here to help your endeavours in love, and maybe some self love?" she explained. The journey wasn't clear but she was here to help.

"Self love? You mean like when I touch myself?" Jay asked, wriggling his eyebrows

Emmy blushed "Wha? No, oh fuck no! No I mean, personal growth, healthy masculinity, regulating your emotions, helping with your ADHD, supporting being vulnerable and expressing yourself. That sort of stuff" she explained. Ok now she understood why she was Jay's love bug, the poor kid didn't even understand the premise of love. Let alone how to express it in a healthy way. She had a lot of work to do here. This was going to be an interesting relationship indeed, she may need outside advice with this one.

Jay stared, he'd never tried any of those things, then again had anyone even tried to help him? His brothers always bullied him, made him eat their jizzcuits, wouldn't share their things, made fun of his hobbies. When he talked about his hobbies, Lola and other people bullied him for it. Showing his emotions just got him teased by everyone else. Like if he wasn't hyper and a complete mess all the time everyone teased him. When he couldn't focus, when he got a new hyper fixation he was the weirdo. Like how heartbroken he'd been when he broke up with Lola and Matthew for the first time. Maybe Emmy could help?

"So... if I cry? Or someone hurts my feelings, or if I miss Matthew?..." he trailed off

"I can help with that" Emmy nodded, if he felt like crying sometimes that was ok, if he wasn't always feeling happy that was ok too. They could work on that together.

Jay smiled, this Emmy bug seemed really nice, she was helpful and understanding. She had a nice voice and she seemed kind of fun. Maybe this could work well "Wow, Ok that would be nice" he nodded.

Emmy nodded to his bedroom door, she would be here a lot it seemed, a lot of work to be done. She was looking forward to all the progress she was going to make. "And since your friend Jessi used to be Sonia's ex client she's kinda mine too now? So I'll be seeing you both a lot" Emmy admitted.

"Huh. A girl lovebug? This might not be so bad"  Jay reflected

Matthew lingered in the doorway hesitantly, his nerves were flared and he was kind of excited, this was his first time seeing Jay since he moved in. Though FaceTiming was nice, being able to stay up late talking over video chat, it wasn't the same as in person. Admittedly, he actually missed the smell of him, how it lingered on him, like a familiar hug, just the comforting musk of Jay. At least he didn't have to worry about the setting anymore, he felt more relaxed since it was Jessi's new house and they had been friends for years. He knew what to expect, but he'd never met Jay in such a normal setting before. "Fuck. What am I supposed to say? The last time I saw him I made a whole grand entrance, how am I supposed to top that?" he mumbled. He'd been running on adrenaline, focus and pure morality. Once the hyper burned off he had panicked at what a mess it had all been. But it ended in the best way. But he couldn't be that dramatic all the time, he didn't want to appear boring or uninterested.

"You could take a page out of Julia Robert's book and make a whole monologue about being a boy in love with another boy? Or y'know just offer yourself on a plate and say eat me?" Maury suggested.

Matthew was taken aback, I mean somewhat mushy and inappropriate, but they would talk about that later, he was more surprised by the first suggestion "You watch Rom-com's?" Matthew gawked. He'd always assumed he was just some horny beast all the time.

"Well when I was pregnant with Montel, I had a lot of overwhelming emotions and Connie was absent a lot. So I amused myself by bingeing Netflix" Maury admitted

Matthew hummed, he learned something new about his hormone monster everyday "That's really healthy of you, and Julia Roberts is an amazing choice" Matthew praised.

Walter stepped forward puffing out his chest "Ok, my sweet little sunshine boy, you are here to woo your sweet little cinnamon bite. If you can rescue him from the hellhole he came from, you can enter his new home and woo the shit out of him". He loved Jay, he loved everything about him, how dorky, sincere and genuine he was. All he needed to do was be brave and communicate.

Matthew was stunned, he'd only been working with Walter for a week now and he was already bedazzled. How the hell had someone like this been missing from his life for so long? He felt confident, sexy and he could even have fun. Walter was a kindred spirit and he too knew the conflicts of love. "Wow, fuck you are good" Matthew smirked, Walter was really growing on him. Where had he been all his life?

"Damn right I am" Walter grinned

Matthew took a deep breath, before shakily reaching out and knocking on the front door, he felt his heart in his throat and his hands were shaking. Hoping they were in and he hadn't come all this way just to embarrass himself, he'd even dressed nice. He'd had a chaotic meltdown of what to wear before he left, eventually facetiming Caleb for help. Changing from his past turquoise button-down and beige jeans, for a casual blue and white striped tee, a brown fleece lined leather jacket and jeans. Caleb had assured him he looked good and he felt good, trying a new vintage style. Suddenly, the door opened, to which Matthew felt his heart skip, just the thought of seeing his face again. Oh god he really was down bad wasn't he?

There stood Jay, like a completely different person. He'd really done a revamp since he had moved out, but Jessi and her mum had something to do with that. His usual white shirt and vest combo was gone. He was wearing a casual Tee with the emblem "I'm into girls and guys, but I'm also really into pasta" and a pair of black cargo's. The shirt was just so Jay coded humour it just made it more endearing, it made him look soft, vulnerable even. Now this was a side of Jay he would happily get used to seeing more.

Jay's eyes lit up immediately upon seeing Matthew, like the whole world suddenly became brighter "Matthew?" he perked up, his voice nearly squeaking. Why hadn't he said he was coming? I mean this surprise was awesome but also he was worried about if Shannon would be angry with him.

Matthew rubbed the back of his neck nervously "Hey, I um... came to see how you are settling in" Matthew responded shyly. Just looking at him, he felt his heart fluttering. God, he was so adorably cute and that outfit wasn't helping matters. Fuck why did he want to pull Jay into a hug and smother his face with kisses?

Jay felt his chest flutter, Matthew had come all this way? He'd come to see him because he wanted to? Instead of FaceTiming or just sending a text? He meant that much to him that he'd made his way here even if he hadn't been home?

"Holy shit he's the cutest"  Emmy sighed dreamily, where had he found this dreamboat?

Jay swallowed, hoping he didn't fuck this up somehow and ruin the moment. He needed to be brave and trust Emmy to do the right thing here. "So um... fuck, I guess... come in?" Jay mumbled, opening the door wider and watching him enter the room. Shit had Shannon bought any snacks lately?

Jay showed Matthew around his room nervously, why was he freaking out? It was just Matthew? They'd hooked up before. He felt self conscious about showing Matthew this new side of himself, as if he might be disappointed. "I um... all my old magic posters are in storage now, but Jessi's mum got me new sheets. All my clothes are from target or bargain sales, but I'll get some of my own soon. So it's still kind of a mess" he babbled. He was still unpacking and arranging his room but he loved the space and layout a lot better. He even wanted to do the perfect post about it when everything was done. Show off that he could be different.

Matthew mused, the bedroom wasn't nearly as bad as he had feared and yet it reflected him so much. Jay had really flourished since moving out, you'd have never guessed he was the same guy. If he wanted he could help him get some new stuff too, he'd look great with some more plants, more wall shelves, even some speakers. His old birdcage was hung from the ceiling, only now with some random plants in it which felt fitting. His books actually had decent shelves out of the way and organised, he even had brand new bedding, white with yellow lemons printed all over it. He never would have thought this sort of vibe would suit Jay so well, "It's.... homely, but it's still you" Matthew smiled. Jay had never been able to express himself back home, so this felt like a glow up for Jay. He then clocked the giant flag hung from Jay's wall, the iconic trio of colours pinned to his new room "Is... that?" he teased.

Jay blinked, blushing nervously "Uh yeah, Jessi and her mum helped me put it up. I could never hang one at home, or talk about you, and Kurt ended up hooking up with Lola. So... I guess I get to talk about it here, or at least be proud? I think that's the right term?" he mumbled. He'd never been able to participate or even express himself in the bisexual community. Jessi had helped him set up a reddit account among other things to actually meet other bisexuals online. His brothers had been pretty homophobic at times which came from their dad's influence, he'd always felt a sense of shame about it and was never able to talk about it. But with Jessi he could actually talk about his sexuality and feel heard.

Matthew felt his heart ache with love, seeing Jay come into his own, finding his pride and finding people who helped him flourish. Wondering how long Jay had carried this burden on his own, remembering how he'd been an ass to Jay about it in the past. Finally dating Jay and being able to support him, seeing him for the person he was. He wanted to be better for Jay, to help him be the person he was always supposed to. How unsupportive his family had been compared to his friends. He reached out to squeeze Jay's hand "Oh honey, you can be as proud as you want, however long it takes you to get there. I'm just glad Jessi is helping you through this" he smiled. He had a whole sexuality journey still yet to come, finding his community and more. "You know Ali and me can help too?" he suggested, they seemed to get along pretty well together. She was the first girl Jay had never flirted with or even tried to date. Ali was loud, chaotic and fun, she could help Jay find the best part of himself.

Jay softened, he knew Matthew had been out longer than he was and he'd even been able to befriend Jessi. It felt nice to be seen and understood by other people, it felt nice to talk about this stuff without feeling ashamed for it.

"Fuck he's so sweet, like can a human being be this nice?" Emmy groaned, he wasn't judgmental, he was supportive and he actually took Jay's feelings into consideration.

"Emmy?!" Walter gasped, she was Jay's new lovebug? He had no idea who would be handling Jay's case or if he would ever be assigned one.

Emmy turned to see Walter, a feeling of shock and yet relief filled her"What? You're Matthew's new lovebug? Are you serious?" she gasped. If Walter was Matthew's love bug, this would be easier than she thought.

"What are the odds?" Walter laughed, it seemed fortuitous that this would even happen.

Emmy smiled in relief "I see a very bright prospective future, I look forward to handling my clients romantic endeavours alongside you" she beamed

"Honey, I was about to say the same" Walter smiled, they would have so much tea.

"But first I have to get this off my chest...." she breathed "OMG MATTHEW IS THE CUTEST! They are so perfect together!" she gushed. How the hell could such a couple be so iconic and so good for each other?

Walter squealed "HE ISSSS!! Oh my god and your boy Jay? He's adorable, he's such an awkward little guy. It's like dreams come true!". Maybe this could last past high school, maybe they could even be soulmates.

Jay knew that his friends never really got his love of magic, how he used it as escapism, that somehow he felt like he could be anything he wanted and wanted to appear cool. It was all he'd known for the longest time, but now he wasn't so sure of it anymore. Maybe he was someone else, maybe he was becoming someone with different hobbies? "So, I know I liked magic and shit before, which I know got kinda..." Jay trailed off, looking back he'd made some pretty bad choices.

"Creepy?..." Matthew pressed "...Sorry that was mean" he apologised. He had never really understood Jay's fixation with it, and he'd been concerned about him being friends with a group of questionable middle aged men. But it had meant something to Jay and that was what mattered. But it seems like all of his old magic merch had been thrown away or gotten lost.

Jay shrugged, now that he was in high school he felt more confident. Nick's older brother was pretty good at mentoring him and even helped him find other hobbies. "No... you had a point, I guess, I thought I could only be successful if I was... older?" he reflected. He thought he could use it to make his family happier, use the magic to bring some light into the house, and it had made him happy at least for a while. But now that he had moved out, gotten away, it felt like he no longer needed it. "I don't even know what I like anymore, if I even still am a magician. I'm still figuring so much stuff out" Jay mused. All the tricks, the glamour, the secrets, none of it felt cool anymore, he didn't even think the rabbit and cape trick was cool.

Matthew softened, magic had been so important to him in middle school, it was all he talked about. But now he was having an identity crises and trying to figure out who he would be now "Oh honey". He was having a tough time, processing so many changes all at once, growing up never came easy and it meant saying goodbye to a lot of things. But it opened doors to new possibilities.

"I don't like all the stuff Nick or Andrew like, I'm not sporty, I'm not into jazz, I'm not a nerd like Missy?" he reflected. He didn't really like basketball, he didn't like playing instruments, he didn't like science all that much either. Just what was he supposed to like?

"And that's ok, you don't have to be, high school is about finding yourself. You could be another type of nerd? You might even be the artsy kind? You don't have to figure that out all at once" Matthew smiled. Jay had so many options to be someone new, someone different. That was the beauty of growing up, learning things about yourself.

"Do you have any idea what hobbies he has?" Walter asked, honestly there was a lot to work with in this room alone.

"Honestly I have no idea, but rom-com's are a good start, and he has plants. I can work with that?" Emmy shrugged, he seemed like the romantic kind which was hopeful. Maybe they could get involved in some high school clubs too?

Jay shifted, opening up like this, getting it off his chest, it felt nice. He couldn't really speak to Nick or Andrew about this yet. He was scared of looking like a loser "Hey Matthew?..." Jay trailed off.

"Hmm?" Matthew responded, turning away from admiring some of the decor in his room. Wondering what sort of books he was reading these days. Maybe he could give some suggestions.

Jay rubbed the back of his neck, hoping this wouldn't backfire and Matthew would get upset. "I... It's nice to talk, I feel like we never did that before. And when me and Lola talked she just got mean, saying I had no future, that I was a loser..." he mumbled. Somehow whenever he got close to someone, he ended up saying the wrong thing.

Walter's antennae twitched angrily, his eyes gleaming with a red hue "She said WHAT?!" Walter blurted angrily, she said what about this sweet angel boy?

Emmy appeared beside Jay, just how the hell was she only hearing about this now? He'd been bullied by his ex? "Oh no the FUCK she did not!" Emmy agreed angrily

Matthew felt a sense of rage filling his chest, boiling hot anger bubbling underneath him. He'd never understood why Lola and Jay worked well together, or what they even saw in each other. But the fact that she was so obsessed with drama and slander was horrific. She's said such awful things to Jay's face and never thought about how much they would hurt? He'd given up Jay for that?! She'd made fun of him for speaking his mind, being vulnerable and wanting to talk about his feelings? When he wanted to work through their problems? "Lola? The same Lola Skumpy who didn't wait for the hot pockets to cool off and sued the company? The same drama attention seeking Lola? The one who thought she got pregnant from dry humping?" Matthew snapped.

Jay bowed his head shamefully, he hated to admit that as much as he had liked Lola, she was so mean to him. Wondering if he was even good enough for her.

Mini spikes appeared on Walter's arms, tears filling his eyes as he listened to Jay pour his heart out. All the awful things Lola had said about him. "That blonde drama queen, with a bullheaded temper and stubbornness really thinks she's better than him?" Walter raged.

Emmy growled, how the hell could someone as sweet as Jay be made to feel so bad about himself? All he wanted was to be loved by someone? "She thought she could do better than this adorkable little plant boy? How the hell?! Emmy snapped.

Matthew grabbed Jay's shoulders, his blue eyes intense and filled with a mix of rage and passion.

He couldn't listen to this anymore, he couldn't hear about how many times Jay was made to feel like shit about himself by his ex. Jay was sunshine incarnate and always just wanted the best for others. "Jayzarian Ricflairian Bilzerian! You might be a chaotic bisexual with ADHD and questionable decision making...." Matthew pressed. Jay cheered at the use of his full name before agreeing with what Matthew stated. "But you are a sweet, genuine, imaginative person, you deserve to have someone who helps you grow, change and learn from your mistakes. Not shame you for the beginnings you never had a choice in!" Matthew pressed.

"PREACH IT ANGEL CAKES!" Walter cheered, he always knew that Matthew was the best for this boy. He poured his soul into everything.

"YES HE DOES! THANK YOU!" Emmy agreed, that was the most romantic thing she had ever heard anyone say. And in the messiest way possible.

Jay focused, softening his tone, if they were to ever have a future they needed to be honest about their flaws. They needed to talk things through and work on them. "And... I want to be that person, I know I can be dramatic, passionate and sometimes a sarcastic sassy bitch...." Matthew pressed. "But I do love you Jay and I'm trying to be better, less mean. I want to be that for you, so we can grow together".

"You guys are the fucking cutest, I think you might be my favourite couple" Maury sniffed in the background tearfully

"That was adorable, I think my butt is glowing all over again" Emmy sniffled, her tail blooming a bright pink hue

"Me too honey, me too" Walter sniffed, his own body emitting the same glow, filling the room in a magenta light

Jay softened, god he loved Matthew, he loved the feeling of elation that came with it. He tried to understand him instead of making him feel ashamed of himself, he made him smile from his heart. How whole and safe he felt, but also he felt like he could punch a wall, climb a mountain and carry an entire car, he felt appreciated and he didn't feel so small. He inched closer to Matthew, cautiously reaching out a hand to squeeze his, his cheeks flushing pink. Matthew softened, taking Jay's hand in his own, smiling back at him shyly, his own cheeks flushing.

"Matthew, you are all those things, but you also make me feel.... sane? Like I know I'm a mess but with you, I feel like life makes sense. Like I can do dumb shit but you also keep me grounded? Lola always enabled the worst in me and it would bite me back later, like a wolf? But you.... you make me feel like I can fly...." he mumbled shyly. Yeah he wasn't a drama student, amazing singer and a decent journalist. But he loved all those things about Matthew and he wanted to support him.

Matthew felt his eyes tearing up, fuck he was going to ugly cry

"Holy shit this boy is adorable" Walter sniffled

"He's a fucking poet" Maury agreed

Matthew took a shaky breath "Jay, I know I can be a gossipy bitch and sometimes a drama queen. But, when I feel dejected, overwhelmed and questioning everything. I can let loose, have fun, go for a late night drive and pull back the front seat and just live it up. You let me let loose sometimes, and sometimes trouble isn't so bad. As long as we aren't breaking the law... too much" he admitted.

Jay grabbed Matthew's face, gazing back at him with intense brown eyes, his hands were a little clammy. He'd never wanted to kiss the shit out of someone as much as she did right now. He leaned in, kissing Matthew, humming to himself in content, this just felt right, kissing Matthew felt right. He knew he had a future with Matthew and though he had no fucking idea where it was headed, he liked that. He had butterflies in his stomach and admittedly, he was getting hard.

Matthew was briefly caught off guard, not used to Jay taking the lead this abruptly, but he wasn't complaining. Leaning into him, wrapping his arms around jay's neck. His lips were chapped, but he could smell the shampoo Shannon kept in the bathroom and it smelled good. He liked where this second chapter was headed.

Matthew cuddled up to Jay on his bed, lemons decorated beneath them, his arms wrapped around Jay's stomach. A warm glow emitted from the two of them.

"Hey Matty?" Jay asked curiously

Matthew bit his lip, stifling a a laugh "Did you just give me a nickname?" he teased. Nobody had done that for him before, it felt kind of nice.

Jay backpedaled, worried he had messed up, wondering if he hated it "Do you hate it? I can think of a better one?" Jay mumbled.

Matthew shook his head, still laughing in amusement, he never would have seen Jay as the type who enjoyed nicknames. But he didn't hate hearing it either "No, I love it, it's adorable" Matthew hummed.

Jay shifted, squeezing Matthew's waist a little, focusing on his words "I was thinking, I know I have outbursts and get overwhelmed sometimes..." Jay mumbled. He didn't like taking it out on other people, he didn't like projecting on people.

"Well... I'll admit I've been doing my own research, what with Caleb being autistic, I need to understand ADHD better too. It's about finding your triggers and comfort zone.." Matthew admitted. He didn't really understand Jay in the beginning and didn't attempt to, but he wanted to do it right this time.

Jay was caught off guard, the only person who truly tried to help him find balance since his diagnosis was Jessi's mum and Mrs Birch "You did that? For me?" Jay gawked.

"Hey, I need to understand how your brain works right?" Matthew mused

"Well.... I was thinking, maybe I could try therapy? People talk about it all the time right? Maybe then I can understand why my dad hates me and my mums always drinking..." he sighed. He could understand his parent's relationship, and then why they acted that way.

Matthew softened, his parents were in a deeply unhappy marriage and had been for a long time. But now wasn't the time to say that aloud "Oh honey, none of those things are your fault, but if it helps you process your feelings better. I'm all for it". He had a feeling Jay may learn some unpleasant things in the process. And shatter the reality that had been his life for so many years.

Jay nodded "I'd just... I don't like yelling at you, or yelling at people...." he admitted

"Going to therapy? Moving out? being vulnerable. Damn Emmy you're doing a great job" Walter beamed, where had she found all this drive? Had she been speaking to Petra about this?

Emmy blushed "Aw c'mon, nah. I'm just.... really?" she smiled

"Maybe this kid is exactly what you needed?" Walter smiled

Emmy hummed "He is very relatable and he's really trying"

"And if we both co-adapt to our clients and communicate, this could really work out" Walter beamed

"Working as a team? Communicating and learn what the other like?" Emmy perked up

She liked this already

Chapter Text

I apologise to other autistic readers, who may feel Caleb is OOC. I am on the spectrum myself but everyone operates differently. I hope I was as in character as I could be.  Also I just love the idea of Jay who has ADHD being a brotherly figure to Caleb and being protective of him due to his friendship with Matthew. Also my best friend of 3 years also has ADHD and she is my better half.

Sorry for the author note rambles, I am back baby x

Matthew took a deep breath, he knew Caleb could become stressed by changes. Like the first time they attended high school and he freaked out and everyone made fun of him, so he rushed to his defence. When they graduated and he felt lonely, but they always gave each other advice and looked out for one another. When he came to the acknowledgement that by joining high school, he wouldn't be able to spend as much time with Matthew anymore, he became distressed, upset and had a meltdown. Though at the time he hadn't been able to understand Caleb's behaviour or outbursts, looking back it all made sense. He'd been someone constant and familiar in his life for years. Seemingly angry at Matthew for the change in his routine and frustration of not being able to prevent it. Since this event, his mother had helped comfort and soothe him, to prepare him for the changes. But he didn't want to lose Caleb's companionship and wanted to make time for him. So Matthew agreed to coffee afternoons on Mondays, where they could catch up and make time for each other. Both enjoyed it and it had become a regular agreement

However, now that Jay was living with Jessie as her roommate and attending high school. He was finally getting to a healthy place in his life where he was free to be himself and away from the problematic behaviour of his family. Honestly he'd done such a complete 180 it was hard to believe he was the same guy. His friendship circle had changed dramatically, he was still friends with Nick and Andrew. But now he was sort of friends with Judd? He had never seen that coming. He'd also moved out and now he was driving a car, it meant they could find secret hookup spots, go to cinema dates, get a ride together to school. It was perfection. Life had really turned around for Jay and he couldn't be happier for him. But he didn't want to isolate him from parts of his life like he had before. While boundaries were a completely different matter, leaving Jay out was not acceptable. He didn't want Jay to feel left out and he deserved to feel welcomed.

He pressed the call button and waited for Caleb to answer, freaking out of what to say. Soon Caleb's face appeared on Camera.

"Matthew, you are calling me. We have not scheduled a video chat, this it out of my usual routine"Caleb responded

Shit was he having dinner with his mum, was he reading or preparing for extra curricular stuff? Was now a bad time? "I know, I know I'm sorry. Do you want me to hang up? I don't want to stress you out, I knew I could have texted but I worried that may stress you out instead of asking you in person" Matthew babbled.

Caleb mused, pondering on his words and sincere apology. Before he decided to reply to him "I appreciate you apologising" Caleb replied "Now, what is it you would like to ask me?".

Matthew took a deep breath, he couldn't hang up now as he'd look like an asshole. God he needed to get a grip and stop being an idiot. This could either go really well or horribly wrong depending on Caleb's reaction "So, you know our coffee meet is tomorrow?" he heisted.

Caleb nodded, as if wondering if Matthew was asking in case he had forgotten or needed to cancel and rearrange. "Yes, we scheduled Mondays as our allotted time to meet for coffee" Caleb confirmed.

"So, the thing is Jay is living with Jessi now. He's sorta befriended her boyfriend and he's making a new group of his own. But... now that we're together, I want him to feel more involved. We promised to communicate with each other..." Matthew trailed off. Jay had really changed, he had more emotionally mature, stable. He was medicated, communicating better and actually learning to function better. The changes were doing him a world of good. "What I'm trying to say is... would you be ok with Jay joining us tomorrow? If you aren't comfortable I'll let him know. I just... I don't want him to feel left out" he babbled.

Caleb went quiet, reflecting on what Matthew had just informed him of. He was glad that he had told him now instead of making drastic changes at the last moment. He enjoyed his coffee afternoons with him, it was their way of staying connected and communicating during the changes of high school. Caleb would admit he felt lonelier not having the red-haired boy as a regular companion. Matthew had his choir and his boyfriend, he was making new friends, he had a whole new life post the end of their TV segment for middle school. The fact that he still made time for him meant a lot to Caleb, this small time they planned was special. But he liked Jay and he knew Jay was important to Matthew, and he didn't want to appear rude.

"You wanted to make new friends right? It's only a small change to the routine, you're still meeting with Matthew every Monday. But now it's just Jay coming along sometimes, not every Monday"  Pete reassured him. Jay was his boyfriend and isolating him wouldn't be kind, but he wouldn't be replacing their friendship.

"So, Jay won't always be at the coffee meetings, but he will sometimes come along" Caleb confirmed

Matthew smiled and nodded, Caleb was taking this well which was a good sign. He wasn't upset and he was slowly processing the changes. Just like when he bought him the new satchel for school. He would never do anything to upset Caleb, he knew how mean that would be and how bad he'd feel about it. "That's right Caleb, we'll still have our Mondays just the two of us. But I'll always inform you like I have now if Jay is joining us".

Caleb nodded, Jay was someone from school and he was someone Matthew had both been friends and romantically involved with. The fact that he was someone familiar made it easier. And Matthew promised he wasn't replacing him. "If you are going to inform me beforehand, then I am ok with Jay joining us" Caleb agreed.

Matthew sighed a breath of relief "Thank you Caleb, I'll see you tomorrow".

Jay shifted, fiddling with the hem of his shirt anxiously, hoping he could make a good impression and not embarrass himself. He'd had a reputation in middle school as the weird kid and he didn't think he'd ever outgrow it. He'd showered, Jessi had helped comb his hair, wearing his jeans and even a shirt with a funny DND quip on the front. He'd found it on sale and fell in love with it, it just looked so cool. He'd never heard of it but it was like magic but based on imagination, there were all sorts of rules, you could create your own characters and it was hilarious. Some of the other members were a bit older and more experienced, but they were really welcoming. He'd slowly started to attend meetings and even arranged days to play at each other's houses or after school. He was having a lot of fun and the campaigns were amazing. He'd been worried to tell people in case he got bullied for it. Looking back he realised a lot of people had actually been mocking him for magic instead of sincere interest. So he was nervous to admit another hobby to people. But it turned out Missy enjoyed DND as well, and a few other high school students appreciated it too, so he felt less left out. Though Matthew had no idea how to play, he appreciated his hobby and was glad he was making new friends. He'd even read the rules in order to help build his character and understand it better.

"Are you sure this is ok Matt? I don't want to crash your hangout with Caleb" he mumbled. He didn't want to intervene on Matthew's personal boundaries and while he appreciated it he didn't want to upset Caleb either.

Matthew squeezed his hand, he was so sweet sometimes he couldn't cope. "Don't worry I prepared Caleb last night, we had a whole conversation, I eased him into it. And he's willing to let you join us sometimes" Matthew reassured him.

"This is the best, I love coffee dates. And mama loves herself some muffins" Emmy cheered. She swore Matthew was the greatest, he was snarky, sensitive, sexy and even funny. He was the complete package. Where had this boy been all their life?

"Coffee shops are the best place for gossip, they have all the tea" Walter agreed. Nerdy boys were the best, sexy, funny and even cute. They were effortlessly themselves and secretly the biggest freaks.

"I like the way you think Walt" Emmy agreed

Matthew peered in the window to see Caleb sat at a table, his mother was nearby at another table with a book and her own drink. Keeping an eye on her son while making sure he didn't get too overwhelmed. She always stayed nearby until Matthew would arrive and then go home to give them privacy. All she needed was a text or call of when to pick him up.

Matthew turned to cup Jay's face "Ok, you're showered, you look cute, you've combed your hair and we've had a pep talk. Will you be ok?". He knew Jay got nervous sometimes and often overstimulated by his ADHD. Just like how he had to reassure Caleb, he'd easily transferred the same routine to Jay. He had nothing to worry about, he'd support him the whole time.

"No sex jokes, unless appropriate. Don't overwhelm him, respect his boundaries and be nice. Also be prepared about being too loud" Jay repeated. Since he'd left home, his sex drive hadn't stopped, but he'd definitely relaxed and realised how weird his brothers were. Learning boundaries and control, of what was normal and what wasn't. He'd also become aware of his tone and behaviour and when he made people uncomfortable.

Matthew smiled, he had remembered "Good, did you take your medicine before you left?". He knew jay was newly prescribed medication for his ADHD but he didn't always remember to take it, so he'd set up a reminder on his phone. Sometimes Jessi or Shannon would give a helpful reminder if he was overwhelmed or distracted. He was doing a lot better at school and he kept his medication at home so nobody got ahold of it.

Shannon had asked Diane who had given her the name of the doctor who first prescribed it. It had been an easy transfer and they had set up a regular refill dosage every month. Jay finally felt like he could focus and he didn't feel overstimulated all the time. "Yes, but this one isn't as strong, I don't feel as drowsy or spacey. I feel focused but not too out of it?" Jay mused.

Shannon really had stepped up as the parental figure Jay always needed, the mother he never had. It was really heartwarming to see, and Jessi acted like the sister he never had. "That's good sweetie, I'm proud of you" Matthew smiled, he kissed Jay's cheek before entering the coffee shop.

Caleb looked up to acknowledge the duo entering the coffee shop. He pointed to Jay's shirt "You are wearing a humorous line which depicts the roleplaying fantasy game of dungeons and dragons. A board game in which imagination is crucial to the world building".

Jay shifted nervously, scratching his neck "Yeah, I'm still a newbie. But I'm really enjoying it". His only job was to show up on time and bring snacks, as everyone brought something to the table to share. If it was held at someone's home, they were the host.

"Many members of the DND club are neurodivergent, due to the capacity of imagination we are able to express around familiar people" Caleb pressed further. Though he didn't see the appeal in the game, he respected that other people enjoyed it.

He'd felt so naturally comfortable around these people, he was surprised to learn how many were like him. Somehow they were all drawn to one another like magnets. "Y'know I was surprised by how many other people were on the spectrum, they were so chill about it" Jay agreed.

"Have you made a character yet?" Caleb asked further, he would like to hear about it as he had created his own superhero characters for people.

"I'm working on it, but I want to get it just right. The dungeon master has been really helpful and so has Missy, I just want it to feel like me y'know?" Jay sighed. He didn't want this character to be lame or stupid. He wanted to feel represented by this fictional interpretation.

"That is understandable, world building needs to feel natural" Caleb agreed

Matthew watched in awe, they were so easily bouncing off one another from one mere statement about a shirt. He had never seen Caleb this chatty with anyone outside of himself. He felt his chest ache with happiness, his boyfriend and friend were getting along, he couldn't wait to tell Jessi about this later. He wanted to take a picture to commemorate the moment but that could wait until later.

"Oh my god, oh my god this is the cutest thing ever" Emmy squealed, nearly crying with joy. This Caleb kid was alright and he was genuinely sweet.

"These babies are the sweetest, I was so scared this would all go wrong. They're like brothers already" Walter beamed

Maury appeared holding a cup of coffee, sat nearby Caleb with a curious expression. He'd missed a lot recently, late bloomers, people ending puberty. His kids going into high school. In all the time he'd had Jay and Matthew as clients they had never had love bugs. But now they had finally had the right of passage? And they got the best ones? Jay got Emmy Fairfax? She was known around the office as a hot mess or as he liked to call her the life of the party. She was a perfect match to the hyperactive and mischievous nature of Jay. But would also do him a world of good in perspective. And Matthew of course got Walter, he deserved nothing less than perfection. Somehow the universe had worked it out perfectly. "My babies are finally growing up, they got their own love bugs? My work is truly done" he sniffled.

There was a tap on his shoulder "That's not all darling, things are about to get pretty saucy around here" Mona grinned, wiggling her eyebrows. Much like Missy, Jay was a raging little horndog, and somehow his filthy fantasies were right up her street. She would be looking forward to all the eventual fun they could have together.

Maury's eyes widened, his jaw dropping. Jay not only had a female hormone monster, he had the wildest one? How was this possible? This was the happiest moment of his life since their child was born. "Thank you sex gods! Thank you universe! I cliterally can't believe this is happening" Maury sobbed happily.

Matthew gestured towards the seats "Jay, would you like to sit with Caleb and further discuss your campaign while I get our order?" he offered. They could get to know each other better and give them some alone time to get used to one another. Pulling out his phone to write everything down.

Jay turned to face him, this was supposed to be their day and he didn't want to ruin it already, his brown eyes wide with worry. "Are you sure? I can help carry if you want?" he offered.

Mathew brushed him off but appreciated the offer "No, I don't want to disturb your conversation and I can come back with drinks. I'll be fine" he assured him, kissing his cheek. This would be good for them both, becoming familiar with one another and finding common ground. He then approached the counter to order their drinks, leaving them in peace.

Andrew gazed at the orders curiously, wondering what sort of drink he should choose. Giving Jay too much caffeine would be trouble, it would be like giving a cat catnip and then letting them run wild in public. He'd learned to limit Jay getting ahold of certain substances, moderation was key when it came to his boyfriend.

An older college student approached him, standing by the counter at the till "What can I get for you?" the barista asked.

Andrew tapped his chin "Can I get a macchiato with hazelnut syrup and a chocolate croissant, then a mocha with honeycomb syrup and a raspberry white chocolate muffin. Then lastly a hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows, plus a Victoria sponge". Caleb didn't like coffee as it gave him headaches and made him overstimulated, so they always went with a hot chocolate or a non caffeinated cup of tea. He then paid for the order and waited for it to be ready.

"Wow, I can't believe it, a coffee date with your best bud and your boyfriend. You lucked out Matthew" Maury praised. He was truly coming into his own and it was beautiful to see.

Matthew jumped out of his skin, he hadn't heard that voice for a long time "Maury? You're still here? I thought being in high school you'd..." he gestured, trying to mimic disappearing. What the hell was he still doing here? Was he seeing things?

Maury scratched his head "Well the thing is, Nick's a late bloomer and honestly I didn't expect the kid to have such stamina? But also hidden dorky charms? He pulled DeVin? But y'know he likes sports now? And he's coming into his own? And you've always been my favourite. So.... I guess I have some clients? But.... I'm losing old ones?" . Nick had a type for bossy or confident women, he liked the chase. And honestly it was admirable. Given his track record with Jessi, Gina and now Devin? Impressive. Honestly he was competing with Andrew these days on being the bigger pervert.

Suddenly so much made sense, when Nick came into the classroom taller than everyone and very cocky. It had been surprise for everyone. "Wait? You're Nick's hormone monster now? Didn't see that coming, but it explains how he got so tall. And suddenly kind of hot" Andrew chuckled. Then his mind clicked, remembering what goldmine that Maury just dropped on him "Wait... so he did hook up with Devin? Good for Nick, he's really taking advantage of that late bloomer situation". He then noted this for later discussion "I need to address this later with Jessi" he reflected.

"I can't believe you and Jay really got back together, you guys are adorable. But you finally got a love bug? I can't believe how much is happening" Maury sighed

Andrew smirked, he had a feeling his old hormone monster was feeling left out. I mean he was seventeen now, puberty was nearly over for him. But they had truly felt like companions for years "Maurice Beverly, are you asking for tea?" he scoffed. He loved to see it, his boyfriend was finally meeting one of his closest friends and they were all growing up. It had come full circle.

"So Jay, you no longer practice magic, or hump everything that moves. Which you used to do, frequently" Caleb replied. He had enjoyed magic tricks and spent with a strange group of men in olive garden. He seemed to be doing better.

Jay shifted "Yeah, after Shannon let me move in and helped me get medicated, I started to relax a lot more. I donated it to a charity so someone else can get joy from it. And since I started dating Matthew again all I want to do is snuggle" he mused. Having someone understand him as well as Matthew did, he felt seen and understood. Yeah he found Matthew sexy and he loved making out with him and squeezing his butt. But he also enjoyed being close to someone who really cared about him.

"It is relieving, watching you get everything sticky with your cum was not pleasant" Caleb stated, he always seemed to stain his jeans. His sexual attraction to anything with a heartbeat was both worrying and impressive.

Looking back he'd done quite a few gross things and he wasn't proud of them. Since leaving the environment he'd gotten some perspective and made some apologies to people. He'd learned a lot more boundaries as well "Yeah, I'm sorry about that dude" Jay apologised. Admittedly his brothers had been a bad influence.

"Thank you for apologising, it got awkward" Caleb agreed

"So, since you joined high school, what do you do? I don't think high school does a news station like Bridgeton middle. And Matthew's a drama kid now, and I'm all nerdy and weird..." Jay mused.

Caleb appreciated him taking an interest, not many people asked him about his life "I'm part of the science club with Missy" Caleb explained.

Missy had always been the nerdy kind, she got that from her parents encouragement, but he never knew Caleb was a science nerd too "No shit?" Jay hummed. He shifted, trying to express himself, he was used to speaking and then being mocked for being vulnerable. It wasn't easy opening up to people without them being a jerk. "I drive now, I have a roommate, I'm in a relationship.... it's' all different now".

"Andrew stopped being gross...." Caleb replied

He'd often been impressed of the stamina of Andrew and the manner of things he could get horny about. They were more alike than he realised and it gave them common ground. He wondered what kind of life Andrew would have in high school, his clubs, hobbies and more. "Yeah, I guess he was an early bloomer and now he's got it all out of his system" Jay reflected.

"What did I miss?" Matthew asked, they'd started gossip without him and he felt a little peeved he'd missed out. He'd heard something about Andrew and knew it had to be something funny.

Jay smiled, immediately perking up upon his return, like a puppy reunited with their owner "Hey babe, we were just talking about life". A lot of interesting stuff had been happening, turns out talking to people was really cool.

Matthew placed down the tray, helping Caleb get his items without spilling, before Jay took his and they discarded the tray after "Ok, we're all set up, catch me up". Being able to discuss tea with his boyfriend and his friend was the best. They could just bounce off each other.

"Jay mentioned he donated his old magic props, how he used to be a pervert, you take drama and I am now a science nerd" Caleb replied

Matthew gawked, magic had meant everything to Jay, he'd changed his whole room into something new and he had no idea what he'd do with the boxed magic stuff. But giving it away to a charity was really sweet "Babe, you... donated your old magic stuff?". He really had changed.

Jay blushed "Well, I... I don't think I need it anymore. I feel like.... I just wanted to be cool, and I wanted to impress my family? But all it did was make me look like a loser" he sighed. He wasn't the same guy anymore and Jessi and Shannon both assured him change didn't have to be bad. He could find new hobbies and express himself differently. He'd befriended Jessi's friends, her boyfriend, he had a room full of plants which he was responsible for. And somehow watching rom-coms made him really popular with girls. They called it a green flag?

"Oh honey" Matthew soothed, he had no idea how he had tolerated living there for so long. The fact that his family never even looked for him was even sadder.

"They don't deserve him, they all fucking suck!" Emmy fumed, he was an absolute sweetheart and even if he was weird that wasn't a bad thing. He just didn't have the right people to appreciate him.

"Thank you! He is way too sweet for those monsters" Walter huffed, at least with Shannon she actually parented him and put up boundaries. And Jessi was such a good friend.

"And I think I'm having more fun with the DND, I can learn the lore, I can make new friends, it's popular and it's kind of like magic but with my imagination?" Jay reflected

Maury appeared behind Matthew with a knowing look, he could read him like a damn book. It seems he was discovering all sorts of new kinks these days "That's totally going to become one of your weird kinks isn't it?" Maury wiggled his eyebrows. I mean he'd been given a blowjob in front of Lola of all people.

Matthew blushed, nearly choking on his coffee "MAURY!" he hissed, but he was indeed correct. Trying to imagine what kind of fictional character Jay would be was kind of hot.

Jay shifted, though he'd had his crushes on people in the past. He was slowly learning what types of men he was into in high school, not just girls. "But um... I'm hanging out in the garage with the weird kids... and um.... I'm kinda friends with Nick's older brother? But it's also weird cos... he's kinda hot?" Jay mumbled. Was it the dark hair? The eyes or just the endlessly cool vibe he gave off.

Matthew nearly punched the air with excitement, wait? They had a crush on the same guy? This was the best day of his life. He was glad he wasn't the only one, he had no idea what it was that made Judd so fucking hot. But he did it effortlessly. "It's totally the voice right? Or the chaotic personality. Or the fact that he's a raging criminal delinquent but that makes him so much hotter? Or the total lack of fucks given?" Matthew pressed.

Jay stared at him "Oh my god babe you read my mind, plus when he's sharpening knives or working on cars and he takes his shirt off. I nearly hit my hand with a hammer". He had no idea what Judd did to stay in shape, or what he did in his free time. But he was the coolest guy he knew. Diane had to feel proud for bringing him into the world.

Matthew sighed, some guys were just so hot you forgot how to function "He'd be worth the trip" Matthew mused. Besides he'd be able to laugh about it later.

"Wait do they have a crush on the same guy?" Walter squealed, Judd was a steaming bowl of sexy and whatever he had been eating made him even more delicious. Be it guys or girls he could pick from both when it came to suggestions.

"Couple goals am I right?" Emmy cheered. Even she could admit as a love bug that the older Birch child had an appeal that she couldn't explain. But he was indeed sexy.

"You both have the same interest in men and communicating it clearly makes you a better couple. Talking is good" Caleb replied

"Thank you Caleb" Matthew smiled

"So, did you have fun?" Matthew pressed, they had bounced off each other so well. It went better than he expected it to. Seeing Jay finally function in normal places felt strange, but he truly seemed happier. He was more expressive and he found bonding moments with people.

Jay blushed, he'd never been able to hang out with people normally. He always found it hard to find common things to talk about. He always felt like a weirdo compared to other people. "Honestly, I didn't think coffee shops could be fun. My mum always left me in the car when she was hungover, screamed at a barista for her recovery dosage and then would get kicked out. I tried it once as a kid but it had no milk or sugar and it tasted bitter. Today was much better" Jay explained.

The fact that Jay's mum even tried driving drunk was insane, and the fact that Jay still loved her was even sadder. "Every time I hear about your family I wonder how CPS was never called" Mathew sighed.

"Caleb is really cool, he doesn't judge and he's kind of funny" Jay smiled, he'd never really spoken to him much. But he could see why Mathew was friends with him. He'd loved to spend more time with him if Caleb was comfortable.

Matthew had been so stressed about this all day, he felt like he had worried over nothing at all. Everything had gone better than he expected and he was delighted. "You two really hit it off, I was kind of nervous about you meeting" Matthew admitted in relief. He was sincerely nice, and they had a lot they could talk about together.

Jay bowed his head, it was the first time he could talk about his hobbies without feeling as if he was going to be laughed at. He never felt like his hobbies fit in with the boy talk. "Nick and Andrew used to talk to me like I was weird for enjoying nerdy stuff, like I was stupid. But... you guys get it" Jay mumbled.

"That four eyed little asshole said what? That depraved little deviant has no right judging! I've read Maury's files!" Walter fumed, his eyes burning red with anger. They made him feel ashamed of himself?

"Thank you! I was nervous about being his love bug, but his fantasies aren't even that weird. He's not even a magician anymore!" Emmy snapped. She had been worried about what to expect from his files. But he was nothing like she expected, he was even fun.

Matthew frowned "Wait a minute, you mean Andrew the horn dog of our year who jizzed his jeans at the school dance and masturbated to Nick's sister's swimsuit? That Andrew?" he scoffed. He of all people was judging Jay? Oh hell no, he had enough dirt on Andrew to ruin his life for this. Lola had made him feel bad enough as it was, but Andrew too?

"I mean, I kind of get it. But now I think I prefer fantasy? Like Lord of the rings looks good, and my type has changed so much. I don't think they're too bad" Jay mumbled. He could understand why from his past actions people would be wary. But now he felt like everyone judged him based on his past rather than how much he'd changed.

Matthew grabbed Jay by the shoulders, his blue eyes baring into his deep brown "Jayzarian Rickflarian Bilzarean,..." he started. He needed him to hear this and take his words to heart. To know he would always be enough and he never needed to change. The fact that nobody in his life had ever appreciated him and took him for granted.

"WOO-HOO!" Jay cheered enthusiastically before remembering the conversation "Sorry continue" he apologised.

Matthew took a deep breath, he'd never cosplayed but honestly it could be kind of hot. Not all of Jay's hobbies were bad and he understood that now. There was more to him than met the eye. "If I have to dress as Frodo Baggins, Aragorn, or Legolas for you, I'll do it. If I have to cosplay as some kind of magical creature I'll do it. Because there are worse things that being into fantasy" he insisted. Girls read fantasy books, hell in middle school everyone got obsessed with the Rock of Gebralta. Having crushes on fantasy characters or enjoying the fantasy genre was not a bad thing.

Jay gawked before mumbling "That is the hottest thing anyone has ever said to me". Matthew was the best partner he had ever had. This felt like genuine love.

Emmy's eyes welled up with tears, fighting back sobs of joy. Matthew was the sweetest boy she had ever met "Holy shit, he... he  just proposed to him. When he said his first name and then made that gesture. I... god I need more tissues" she wailed. Tears spilling down her cheeks. He was willing to put so much effort into making him feel validated instead of outcasted.

"This is why I do my job, this is why I'm a lovebug! Oh my god my mascara is going to run" Walter blubbered. He was an absolute angel. They understood one another so well.

"Well, I can always stay over if Shannon doesn't mind it, or....we could go to the cinema, see what's on and maybe get frisky with a bag of popcorn" Matthew suggested. Fuck it, why not get weird? And besides he could always tell Jessi about this later over FaceTime. He loved their FaceTime gossip sessions.

"Actually, Shannon is making beef stew tonight, she always makes way too much. So she'd be happy for someone else to feed. And Jessi lets us watch films on her laptop so she won't mind. But.... the popcorn part is enticing" Jay hummed. She was a really amazing cook and she always got really happy when he complimented her cooking. Due to his own passion for cooking, she enjoyed it when he helped her around the kitchen.

"Screw it, dinner at the Glaser household it is. I need to catchup with my favourite redhead anyway" Matthew smiled. He could see his two favourite people, two birds with one stone. Them living together had their advantages these days so it wasn't all bad.

Jay pulled him in, wrapping his arms around Matthew's back and hugging him. Burying his face into his neck. Today had truly been the best day ever. "Thank you so much Matthew, I've had so much fun today babe". He got to have coffee, he got to talk about his hobbies and he made a new friend. Matthew softened, wrapping his arms around Jay fondly. Moments like this made it all worth it. Seeing that look on Jay's face.

Chapter 5: Lola the bitch

Summary:

Matthew overhears Lola insulting Jay, gossiping about his family, dating his brother and making him jealous. Among other awful things. Matthew snaps, tearing into her to which other people agree, finally putting her in her place.

Chapter Text

Lola huffed irritably, she'd heard from the Christmas party that Jay had rekindled his romance with Matthew. She'd hoped they may have their high school reunion, maybe become the iconic popular pair that would become the most viewed on social media. Constantly having fun and getting into trouble, making other couples fear them and envy them. Instead he had roamed back into the arms of his ex, forgetting her and moving on with his life. Even though she'd suggested they could still be friends. While she enjoyed watching gay porn, she couldn't help the bitterness at the fact that Jay chose Matthew over her. With their passionate past and so many kindred spirits, that he would abandon her like that. She would never accept the humiliation of dating one of his brothers, Val was in a relationship with Nick's sister Leah and Kurt was nowhere near as sweet and funny as Jay was. It would be too embarrassing to admit she could get sloppy seconds, she'd only used him for attention and amusement. But she thought Jay would fight his brother for her but he instead relented for her happiness. He'd given up on any prospects of them ever being happy.

Now she'd learned at their first high school Christmas party, Jay and Matthew had gotten back together. Not only had she not been invited, due to her being out of town due to Rodney taking her on a Christmas trip. She'd missed out on loads of drama happening between her classmates. Jay had moved out from his family home and was now roommates with Jessi, who was also his ex. They were living together under the same roof which was scandalous. Given they had once been romantically involved at one point. And Jessi now had a boyfriend, while supposedly having a crush on a senior high schooler. How had all this drama been happening and she had no idea.

The idea that Jay could forget about her so easily hurt more than anything. As if their time together had meant nothing at all to him "How could Jay do this to me? Doesn't he know how sensitive I am?" she snapped. They'd rubbed fronts, he'd fingered her, they had chemistry and history. They were into one another and they had a future. Sure she'd dumped him before they got into high school, but she saw a future with him and he made her happy. There was no worse humiliation than your ex leaving you for another guy. "Sigh, will I Lola skumpy be doomed to be forever alone?".

"Wait, so Jessi is roommates with Jay now? God that's gotta be awkward" Andrew reflected. His ex girlfriend was now kinda his adopted sister? That sounded like the plot of either a terrible porn premise or a romantic comedy.

While he did admit that did sound awkward, they were older and more mature now. They weren't in middle school anymore, this was high school, they were different people. She would be a good influence on Jay and maybe he would change for the better. "I mean he's safer there with Jessi than he was back home" Nick replied. He could have his own room and routine, he could have his own shower, he didn't have to fight anyone for meals.

"You got me there Nicky" Andrew agreed, he often pondered on his own future of living alone. How peaceful it would be without his parents, maybe he and Nick could be roommates?

He'd heard a lot went down at the Christmas party, but he'd been too busy gossiping and drinking. He'd been chatting to Missy all night and even made some new unexpected friends. "So he got back with Matthew? After the Christmas party?" Andrew asked.

He realised how immature he'd been about Jay's bisexuality in middle school which he felt bad about. Jay seemed really happy and comfortable in himself and his relationship. And now that he was taller and more confident, his own dating life was bound to improve too. "Yeah, he and Matthew are a couple again, honestly they make a really good couple. I never thought anyone would be able to handle Jay" Nick mused.

Andrew nodded, it was better than humping pillows, doing magic and whatever other weird hobbies Jay used to have. He heard he was into DND now? Which was popular among some of their peers including Missy. Jay was finding himself and it was impressive to see so many changes in him. "Hey, he's happy, they're healthy, Jessi can help give him advice and he's making good life choices now" Andrew reminded him.

"Pfft, they're probably having an orgy non stop" A voice scoffed. Since when was Jay cool? He'd joined a nerdy club, which was still in the same league as magic. Everyone knew plants were lame and annoying. Every hobby he seemed to collect made him more of an outcast.

The two turned to see Lola standing behind them with an annoyed expression. She must have heard about the reunion of Jatthew, it was picking up like wildfire. Even some of their peers had begun to blog about it online.

Nick looked awkward, of all people she was the person they wanted to avoid right now. If Lola was pissed at you, somehow you had immensely fucked up. Lola was the epitome of a bitter ex, if she couldn't have Jay nobody could. She somehow ruined all of her past relationships in some form and blamed everyone but herself. She loved drama more than she cared about forming relationships, he really just wanted to stay out of this. "I mean I know Jay's sexcapades are infamous, but he's changed. He seems a lot more toned down. I think living with Jessi and her mum has done him good" Nick reflected.  He was healthier, respected boundaries more, he was better at communicating and had even become medicated.

Lola rolled her eyes in boredom, Nick used to love being sarcastic and snarky, since when had he gotten so boring? And somehow taller and sexier? When had that happened? "Yawn, Jessi's mum is a dried out hussy and blamed her divorce on her lack of sexual satisfaction" Lola scoffed.

"I mean, he was a weed addict who lived in her basement and technically gave minors weed gummies" Nick reflected, thinking about how easily Jessi found her dad's weed stash in middle school. They could have been in a lot worse trouble. He'd shacked up with a girl half his age and had another child. Shannon had truly been through a lot and she was sick and tired of it. The only reason she tolerated her ex was so her daughter could have a relationship with her dad.

"And she transferred Jessi to a new school, before she transferred back. She cared enough to do what she thought was best" Andrew agreed

"And what? She adopted Jay out of the kindness of her heart? Please. I know my mum's parole officer only sticks around due to the benefit cheques" Lola scoffed. There was no way Shannon cared that much about Jay, adults were all the same. Why would she choose someone as troubled as Jay? Even though he would be hard work to endure.

Shannon had actually formed routine and boundaries with Jay, encouraging healthier lifestyles. He was eating better, sleeping better, he was better dressed and even able to express his hobbies. Shannon taking Jay in had been the best thing to ever happen to him. "I mean, he's in therapy now, he's actually medicated and has a routine. I think he's even bathing now" Nick stated. While the idea of living with Jay was a nightmare, due to having two older siblings. Jessi being an only child, she had enough room and would enjoy the company.

Lola growled stomping her foot, how the hell were they all so accepting? Had they forgotten what kind of person Jay used to be. How he broke her heart and how weird he used to be. She had changed him for the better and he'd forgotten her so easily? "He's still a piece of shit and you know it!" she snapped.

Nick backed away, whatever drama Lola was trying to instigate he had no interest in it. He was trying to avoid getting into trouble. His mum would assume he was becoming Judd 2.0. And he and Judd were slowly forming a sort of respect for one another "Woah, what the hell?" Nick stammered. Everyone knew Lola was not safe to be around when she was pissed

"Please, he's a loser and everyone can see that, I mean I dated him and I know exactly what kind of person he is" Lola chuckled.

"Woah, Shannon actually made you a lunch?" Matthew mused, until now he'd only seen Jay eat crackers, leftovers from the lunchroom, meal tickets or steal from other people. She'd made a homemade fig jam and chicken sandwich on a seeded loaf, some cheese sticks, some sliced fruit and even some low calorie snacks and a juice box. Most would see this as immature or childish, but given the love and care Shannon had put in and how neglected Jay had been. This was a cute gesture.

Shannon always made sure he ate and went to bed with a full belly. She encouraged his love of cooking and even made him snacks if he wanted them. He had to admit he liked having someone dote on him. Jay smiled "Yeah, the jam was really good and I might eat it on toast. It all smells really good and I don't have to fight anyone for it".

"That's the saddest thing I've heard today" Matthew sighed.

Jay smiled, he'd even asked Shannon about cooking recipes from his culture, to see how they tasted. She'd been eager to try and spent a lot of time learning the recipes. Even Jessie had been curious about it. It was nice having a parental figure who actually invested in his personal life. "Shannon's such a good cook, sometimes she lets me help in the kitchen" Jay reflected.

Matthew was impressed, Shannon was teaching him how to cook, making him bathe, take therapy and more. She'd rolled up her sleeves and was taking no nonsense. She was really stepping up as his guardian, it was admirable."She obviously trusts you to let you into a kitchen" Matthew mused. Suddenly, they saw kids gathering in a circle in the hallway. It wasn't high school if some form of drama wasn't occurring.

"Did someone get a mega wedgie? Start a fight? Did someone's locker get graffitied?" Jay questioned. He'd heard fights and all manner of pranks were even harder in high school. Older kids were viscous. Kurt and Val used to tell him stories of swirlies and all sorts of stuff. Now that they were in high school they would finally see for themselves.

Matthew shrugged, sometimes girls started fights out of petty squabbles and rumours, it was entertaining as hell to watch but not something you wanted to be involved in "Maybe a catfight?" Matthew hummed.

Suddenly a familiar redhead appeared, she'd been looking for him all over. He really didn't need to hear this "Jay?...." Jessi replied, a worried and guilty look on her face.

Jay saw the expression on her face and knew something was up. As her newly appointed adopted brother, they were family. If she was ever in trouble he'd do what he could to support her "Jessi? What's going on?" Jay questioned.

Jessi shifted, she and Ali had been talking about clubs and music taste when they overheard her in the hallway. Neither of them could stand the awful things she was saying, knowing they had to step in. "Lola's gone mad, she's started gossiping about you and it's brutal" Jessi pressed. Gina and Ali had already gone to get a teacher and get some help. What she was saying breached so many privacy credentials and was bullying.

Jay's stomach dropped, a sense of anxiety hitting him out of nowhere. He hadn't seen her since she dumped him before high school started. Leaving him nervous and confused. "Lola?" Jay mumbled, a scared and hurt expression formed on his face.

"His ex? That blonde psycho with mummy issues?" Emmy snapped, her eyes glowing red with anger. She'd heard all about her, feeling both impressed, angered and confused by her. There was no way she was going to let his ex ruin this for them.

"Oh hell no she didn't! Like hell that deluded narcissistic gossip is going to ruin this for us!" Walter raged. His babies were finally happy.

Matthew's eyes burned with rage, he'd tolerated enough in his conquest for love with Jay. They were finally communicating and acting like a couple, growing and changing together. He'd endured hell and back, confused feelings and heartache. He'd given Jay up, hidden his feelings, regretted and it and gotten him back, like hell he was going to let Lola of all people ruin that for him. He pushed forward, Jessi and Jay in tow.

"His family is totally broke, his mums basically a rehab regular with how much she drinks. His dad has slept with half of Bridgeton...." Lola continued, laughing loudly. Some students were filming, some laughing and others looked uncomfortable.

"I don't think you should be making fun of alcoholics Lola..." Andrew cut in, didn't her mum pretty much have a parole officer?

"Whatever, don't interrupt me" Lola scoffed, rolling her eyes as if his comment was an inconvenience to her. Whatever she had to say was far more important.

"Lola?" Jay whimpered, his voice filled with disbelief and hurt, hiding the tears that fought to fall. So many things he'd told her in confidence, secrets he'd shared with her. She was spilling them out for all their classmates to hear without his consent. He'd never had a choice coming from neglectful parents, she of all people should understand how he felt.

Lola turned, snorting with amusement "Speak of the devil, if it isn't my ex lover turned boy kisser" Lola scoffed. Glaring at them as Matthew squeezed his hand like a vice.

He shrugged off her comment, yeah he was bisexual so what. He was currently dating a guy so what? That wasn't what was important "Why are you talking about my mum?" Jay asked. Yeah his mum was often drunk, sleeping or spent her time in her sowing room, but she was a good mum and she did love her kids. Now that he was older he knew his mum needed support and counselling that his father would never pay for.

"Please, she spends her time at the local corner shop, I don't even think she remembers what sober feels like. But then if I was your mum I wouldn't want to either. You're brothers are practically better than you" Lola snorted.

"Kurt?" Jay muttered, his crappy older brothers who treated him like a punching bag for years.

Lola smirked, somehow his brothers were the only good thing about him. They were taller, buffer and funnier. They had a lot more fun and they could even drive. "I was only dating him to make you jealousy sweetie and you still ruined that. He was better at kissing and rubbing fronts anyway" Lola teased.

Jay bowed his head, his expression one that mimicked being punched in the gut, his eyes went glassy with tears. He'd always known Lola never really liked Kurt, she was just doing it to hurt him but he wished her the best anyway. He wanted to be the better person but he couldn't bring himself to fake that he wasn't hurting. Now that he was living around healthier people he realised how toxic his old life had been. How even he and Lola had been bad for each other. But he never thought she'd be this petty.

Jessi placed her hand on jay's shoulder "Are you ok?" she soothed, she'd talk to her mum about this. This wasn't ok. She was truly being shitty to Jay and this was bullying.

Matthew stepped forward, his eyes burning with rage, his hands practically shaking with anger. Lola had gone too far, this was beyond cruel. She was taking all the pain and trauma of Jay and airing it out for amusement. Jay was the sweetest boy he had ever met if not the most troubled, but he loved him anyway. Like hell she was going to badmouth his boyfriend.

"That blonde bimbo gossipy bitch is really shit talking that absolute sweetheart of a boy? Shit talking our future husband?!" Walter raged

"You better rip that bitch a new one!" Emmy snapped

"Are you seriously judging Jay? You've got the gall to shit talk his life Lola! Especially given the circumstances" Matthew scoffed snarkily. Lola was a whole essay of pathetic and she needed a wakeup call. You could ask anyone and they would all have differing opinions of Lola and none of them were positive.

Lola glared, well speak of the devil. The boy who had stolen Jay from her for a second time "Excuse me? You stole the love of my life! You seduced him!". Just what did he have that she didn't?

Jessi couldn't believe this, she had been at that Christmas party, she'd seen them flirting. They still had chemistry and they still cared about each other. They had a connection that few people were blessed with. Matthew had stolen nothing, they were both single when they met, both horny and both attracted to each other. Matthew made Jay happy and vice versa, they really cared about one another. "Yeah right" Jessi scoffed.

Lola glared in her direction, she knew Jessi had a boyfriend now and she was friends with the burnouts. She'd become friends with the drug dealers of the school. She had no room to talk "Stay out of this Jessi!" Lola snapped.

Jessi folded her arms and held her ground, by all legal reasons she could defend Jay "As his adopted sister and legal family, I call bullshit!.." Jessi huffed. "You treat everyone around you like trash, you gossip about them, use them for views and make it their problem. You've become a mini DeVin clone" Jessi snapped. No wonder she was lonely and nobody wanted to spend time with her. All she did was make them uncomfortable and bring out the worst in them. She used all their secrets against them and rallied people into arguing for petty reasons.

"She's right" Gina agreed, she too had once felt sorry for Lola. But her current attitude and behaviour made everyone avoid her like the plague. Who would want to be friends with her?

"Jay was already having a sexuality crises before he dated you. Ali was the only person who understood that. And y'know what he cared enough about Matthew to try and be better. You just bullied him into being worse" Jessi continued. Jay was bisexual, he liked both genders and he had a preference for male and female presenting. He got horny for both and he was proud of that. She knew exactly how that felt and they'd even discussed their own bisexual journeys together. She'd confessed her crush on Ali, she'd confessed her crush on Caitlin her dad's girlfriend, and her awkward journey of liking girls. He'd been immensely supportive and helped her laugh it off.

"Yeah, so what he had a gay phase" Lola huffed, what did that matter? None of his exes had lasted. Nobody could stand to be around him either.

Jay felt a pang of hurt, had she just referred to his coming out as a phase? He'd struggled so hard with his identity despite his confident facade. How Matthew had felt about their kiss before they began dating. What sort of guys he was into, what guys found him attractive and so on. For Lola to dismiss it so casually felt like a gut punch "Sorry what?!" Jay gasped.

"The fuck did she just say?" Ali spat. It had been enough of a struggle for her to admit her pansexuality to her classmates and feel accepted. Jay had confided in her and they had formed a friendship. For Lola to say something so hurtful and passively Biphobic was really shitty.

"Oh she didn't" Andrew gasped, had she just demeaned and dismissed Jay's identity. Yes, he had at one point been dismissive and shitty about Jay's sexuality. But he educated himself, he grew up and he changed. He'd read a lot about bisexuality and ways to better support Jay as a partner. He'd put in the work, Jay meant that much to him.

"She did not just call it a gay phase!" Walter glared

Matthew stepped forward, half of her peers were all some flavour of queer. He was part of the queer choir of bridgeton high. There was a community surrounding her and she was really just being petty to hurt Jay. "Jessi's bisexual, Ali's a pansexual, I'm gay, Jay's bisexual. Half of us are all queer, he's not having any phase, he's just himself. But I'm so far the only god damn person who's even tried to see that!" Matthew snapped. Jay wasn't perfect, he was messy, clueless and sometimes reckless but he had a heart and soul. He was passionate, sweet and romantic.

"You dated his brother out of petty spite when he didn't want you back after you broke up!" Jessi pressed. That was low, even for Lola. To make Jay jealous and want her back she had gone and dated his bully.

"You really can't forget that level of desperation" Nick chimed in, he remembered visiting Jay's house for a sleepover in middle school and it had been traumatic. How Lola could even stand either of Jay's brother's was beyond him. Hey, now they were in high school she had a chance to date them again.

"I mean a guy who eats his own Jizz off crackers, you can't really get lower than that" Andrew added

Jay remembered all the hurtful things she had said to him, all the things she felt comfortable saying to his face once they were friends. Smashing his feelings into pieces under her heel. Making him question whether he was a worthy person "You told me I had no future..." Jay bowed his head.

Lola rolled her eyes, that had been a wake-up call for his own good, a casual observation. How did he expect to change if he never took advice from other people? "You lived in a run down house with a drunk mum and two way hotter brothers who actually do cool shit. All you did was obsess over magic and hump pillows" Lola spat. His first girlfriend had left him when she found out he humped pillows. He had no sexual experience aside from humping inanimate objects. Everyone saw him as the weird kid for a reason.

Jay blushed, hiding his head in shame as he heard the muttering and whispers of other students. He had no sexual education from either of his parents, nobody taught him. His brothers hadn't been much help so he had to learn on his own. It was embarrassing upon reflection but what else was he supposed to do? Shannon had been really helpful with sexual health, education and even some books. She'd given him condoms, taken him to a GP, and given him educational content.

"Oh no she didn't" Walter spat

"You know Lola, I used to feel bad for you being friends with DeVin" Gina rolled her eyes "Now I think you've become as scummy as she is". She'd allowed popularity to cloud her judgment, she was always ripping people down for petty reasons and revelling in misery. She pushed people away, refused to form close connections and would always get petty or jealous when people left her for new friends.

"I can't believe I rubbed fronts with her" Andrew agreed, he'd had much better partners since and learned a lot about himself.

Matthew stepped forward, rage bubbling beneath his skin, he'd saved Jay from his crappy home life, gotten him legally adopted by Shannon Glaser. Given him a second chance and even introduced him to new friends. Like hell he was going to let Lola take that away from him. If she wanted to play petty and air out everyone's dirty laundry, so be it. "Lola. You sued a company of shitty microwave pizza pockets because you were too fucking stupid to cut it in half and wait for it to cool down. Your only family is your mum's parole officer, the only people desperate enough to actually be into you was Andrew of all people...".

"Point taken" Andrew replied

"....And Jay. Literally nobody else in this year wants anything to do with you. You constantly shit stir drama for boredom and post online to get the attention your mum never gives you. You think feminism is stupid because of the male validation and influence you feed off, yet you're so desperate for DeVin's attention. And the only boy to treat you with any decency you push away and gossip about when he's actually happy" Matthew spat.

Lola's eyes welled up with tears, her lip trembling, every word Matthew was saying cut deeper and deeper. Throwing reality in her face of how her actions reflected upon her. How nothing ever made her happy. How everyone remembered the worst of her actions and were throwing it in her face.

"You consistently put down other women, despite the fact that none of the guys you pander to even like you" Jessi agreed. The teacher who took advantage of her, Andrew dumped her due to her mimicking his dad. Devin bullied her but Lola was so desperate for friends she endured it. She treated everyone around her like shit and nobody wanted to have anything to do with her.

"You were friends with DeVin despite the fact that she treated you like shit for years and put down other women" Gina agreed. She slut shamed and body shamed Gina for developing early. She bullied the likes of Jessi and others for her parents divorce and more. She spread awful rumours about everyone but she never called her out on it.

"Jay's parents might be awful, but at least he had the balls to leave and make something of himself!" Matthew continued. He had realised how toxic his home life was and how it would never change. So he took the leap to ask for help and people had shown up. Lola's life was pathetic because she never treated the people in it with empathy. "All you do is sit at home, eat hot pockets scrolling on the internet while wondering why nobody likes you!".

Lola's eyes welled with tears as her mascara began to run, everyone's words ringing in her head. "You guys suck! You're all lame and I hate you!" Lola spat, her voice wobbling as she ran off.

"Oh my god baby! You ripped into her like a cat about to pounce on a lion! I am so proud of you!" Walter praised happily. He had put that bitch in her place for slandering his boyfriend.

Emmy grabbed Jay by the shoulders, shaking him enthusiastically, nearly bouncing off the walls "He totally just defended your honour, he's an absolute angel! He's perfect" Emmy sighed. He really had found the perfect guy.

Jay shifted, nobody had stood up for him before, he was just used to people being cruel and laughing it off. He was used to crying alone in his room, bottling up his feelings and thinking nobody cared. Normalising when people treated him like shit because he didn't know any different, for the first time his friends actually defended him. He was still in shock that everyone including Matthew had blown up on her like that "Um.. that was.." he stammered.

Matthew sighed, taking a deep breath to calm himself, cooling the rage within himself. He hadn't ripped into someone like that in a long time, he said he was over being a judgemental drama queen, but Lola deserved that one. Jay was still in shock understandably, but that needed to be said. He wouldn't stand by while Jay's ex slandered him out of spite.

Jay rubbed the back of his neck awkwardly, fuck he was still learning to be vulnerable and use his words. "I've never had someone in my corner before, I mean my brothers would make me do tests or dares. And I guess Nick and Andrew felt more awkward sometimes but... that made me really happy. Like my heart has a boner..." Jay reflected.

Matthew turned to Jay "Lola may have her moments of amusement and rare rationality. But she has no right speaking down to you like that. You deserve better than that" he stated. He was now wondering if she had spoken to him like that the entire time they had dated.

Jay hesitated, Matthew meant so much to him and being loved so deeply by another person. He felt like the luckiest boy in the world "I guess... I mean... thanks" Jay mumbled.

Matthew smiled, taking Jay's hands in his own "Hey, if I can rescue you from the abysmal state of your old home. I can defend you against Lola" he shrugged. The lengths he would go to for this boy were unmatched.

"So, I heard you and your new boy toy got into a fight with Skumpy" Judd replied. He had heard Jay had a lot of exes but he had no idea he liked the ones with a flare for the dramatic. He'd heard a lot about Skumpy, she was the child of a single groupie mum who was constantly leaving her alone. She never wanted Lola and never put her up for adoption so she just pretended she didn't have a kid. So she made it everyone else's problem. He'd heard she said some pretty shitty things about Jay, some below the belt. He loved ripping into Nick but even he had his limits, if she ever gave him trouble again all he had to do was let him know.

"Yeah, she was being a Grade A bitch, and Matthew totally ripped into her. And so did some of the girls?" Jay replied. He had never expected so many people to jump to his defence. Everyone had been checking in with him since it happened. The fallout was already all over social media,  and people were ripping into Lola and defending Jay and Matthew. She was losing followers and friends by the hundreds, calling her a petty jealous ex. Calling her crazy and more.

Lulu took a long drag from her joint, there was nothing worse than a love triangle. This girl really had a stick up her ass about her ex moving on "Oh she's fucked, nothing scarier than a pissed off woman" Lulu chuckled. It seemed she'd made enemies out of a lot of girls.

"Of all people Lola has no right judging anyone" Jessi scoffed, she pitied Lola for her life situations but the way she had treated Jay was awful. He had every right to move on and be happy.

Camden smiled, wrapping his arm around her "It's really sweet how much you care about your friends" Camden smiled. She had a big heart and she was never afraid to express that.

Lulu nudged Jay curiously, there was a lot to him that he kept hidden. She was curious to know about him and how he and Jessi became friends, he seemed like a cool dude "So, you're a chef now Bilzerian?" Lulu asked. What sort of stuff did he cook?

Jessi cut in, before people assumed he was a dealer or something illegal "My mum lets him help around the kitchen, he's no pro yet but he's got skills" Jessi explained.

Lulu remembered the hilarious fiasco with the melon, maybe the next time they were in the kitchen. The situation would be less traumatic for him "You'll have to invite us for dinner" Lulu smirked.

Jessi blushed, her crush and her boyfriend under the same roof? That would be awkward. She no longer had feelings for Jay, it had been an awkward middle school phase she liked to forget about. But having Judd and Camden under one roof, her imagination would go wild.

Nick thought about what dinner parties meant, thinking of his mum drinking wine, people sat around a table all fancy. That sounded awful, no way he was going to do that with his classmates. He'd be labelled lame and everyone would make fun of him. "Isn't that what adults do? Dinner parties or some shit? Are we turning into our parents already?" Nick shuddered.

Judd must have picked up what he was referring to and immediately agreed. Of all people Judd knew how to host a party, how to get the goods and make it memorable. He immediately cut in "Fuck no, we're not doing a dinner party" Judd huffed.

Jay wracked his brain for ideas, trying to think of something fun they could do together "What about a picnic? We all bring some manner of food and we get wasted in a forest or something with snacks?" Jay suggested. People did that all the time in movies. Teenagers got laid, did dumb shit and made memories when they went into the woods.

"Like a party in the woods?" Jessi asked, that didn't sound so bad, lots of people had cars. They could smuggle stuff in and use the beams for lights, as long as they didn't get caught. They could even form a campfire or something.

"That sounds fucking awesome, I'm in" Judd smirked, sneaking in beer, drugs, people making out in the backs of cars, in the woods. It was a recipe for chaos and that was just his sort of vibe. If the cops came it got even more exciting. They could tell scary stories, people could hump in the woods and they could all have fun until the police came.

"Agree with the sexy boy Jessi!" Connie squealed

"Y... yeah I'm into that, let's fucking do it!" Jessi agreed, why not? High school was about reimagining yourself and recreating a new version of you.

"This party is going to be sick" Lulu chuckled, taking a long tote

"Well that went nothing like how I planned" Matthew reflected, he'd seen red and just ripped into Lola without thinking. He didn't regret it but he certainly had gotten riled up. He just hated the way she had spoken about Jay. Punching down his confidence like that. He'd said goodbye to Jay while he went to his classes but promised to text him throughout the day.

"You insulted Lola to her face for her gossip about your current boyfriend Jay" Caleb replied, he had rightfully protected the person he cared about. The way Matthew had stood up for him when he got overwhelmed.

Matthew frowned, he knew Lola would be sulking and licking her wounds somewhere but he couldn't care less. She had learned her lesson and she wouldn't be forgetting it in a hurry. She needed to learn her place that she couldn't just shit talk anyone without consequences. If she wanted to make new friends nobody from her old school would want anything to do with her. "Like hell I was going to let her shit talk Jay in front of me" Matthew huffed.

"Protectiveness around something you love is natural, often in nature female species with act this way with their offspring" Caleb replied

Matthew chuckled, Caleb's unbiased perspective was often satisfying and refreshing. He could comfortably talk to him about anything. And now that Caleb had also formed a friendship with Jay they could talk about him casually "Thank you Caleb" Matthew mumbled.

"Um... Matthew" a familiar voice asked, she'd heard about the fight with Lola and how upset he and Jay had been. She'd heard they were romantically involved which was both endearing and admirable, for them to face such hostile behaviour as a same sex couple. She knew she wasn't in the same circles as him as she was in the tech club and had joined the library volunteers now too. But she would always be around for advice.

Matthew turned to see Missy standing nervously nearby, he'd heard about her recent breakup with her boyfriend. She'd finally outgrown her awkward phase "Oh, Missy?" Matthew questioned.

Missy shifted, looking nervous "I heard about what Lola did, that was really shitty of her to say those things. I just wanted to make sure you were doing ok" she soothed.

Matthew smiled, it was nice to see a familiar face after such a long time. Missy had once been the wallflower, the shrinking violet, she'd been awkward, horny, dorky and nerdy. She'd been bullied relentlessly by her peers and even shunned for it. She'd dated Andrew, briefly crushed on Nick and others. Her love life was complicated and messy. But she had made such drastic changes, she didn't even seem like the same girl, she really came into her own in high school. She had found herself and she was proud of that, she was owning her sexuality "Thanks Missy, I appreciate that".

"Y'know, you and Jay really do compliment each other. Like fine wine and cheese, like clouds and rain, like honeybee's and flowers..." she trailed off. She was rambling, why was she making comparisons to food? God she needed to shut up "What I mean is, you bring out the best in each other" she stammered.

"Thank you Missy" he smiled, that really meant a lot

"I swear this girl is sunshine incarnate, the world doesn't deserve her" Walter beamed
