Chapter Text

“Hey Lin?”

“What, Su?” she asked without looking up from her book.

“How long did you wait after your divorce to start dating?” the younger Beifong asked distractedly, watching the server across the pool hand a drink to a very sunburnt guest with a captivating smile.

Lin’s head snapped up, away from her book, confusion written on her face. “Excuse me?! I’ve never been married! How should I know?”

Su rolled her eyes, sending her sister an exasperated look. “Then what was that with Tenzin?”

Lin’s face hardened as she muttered. “A long relationship that ended badly.”

A splash echoed from the far side of the pool end as the two sisters refused to break their unofficial staring contest. Moments later, soft, rhythmic splashing grew louder as someone swam closer. Water lapped against the tiles when they popped their elbows on the edge in front of them.

“Why does Lin look like she’s about to throw her book at your head?”

“Kya! Help me out here. When is it socially acceptable to start dating again?” Su inquired with a hint of desperation. She knew her sister-in-law was her shot at a truthful answer.

Kya raised an eyebrow, brushing water from her forehead, but answered nonetheless. “Screw what society thinks. If you want to get back in the saddle a week after the ink has dried on your divorce papers? Do it.” She shrugged.

A broad smile spread across the younger Beifong’s lips. “Thank you, Kya. At least one of you is helpful.” She shot a pointed look at her affronted sister, who huffed in response, causing Kya to giggle. Su then grabbed her flaming sunglasses from her bag.

“Why are you asking, anyway?” Lin asked gruffly, watching her sister lather sunscreen on herself, then put on the ridiculous glasses after downing the rest of her drink.

“I may have found someone to get back on the ostrich-horse with.” She said, a sly smirk curling on her lips as she placed her now-empty wine glass on the table.

“Oh? Who?” Kya asked as she pushed herself out of the pool, water cascading down her body.

Lin didn’t register her sister’s response. Her attention was utterly captivated by her wife. Kya wrapped a shawl around her waist and plopped down next to the chief’s thigh. It wasn’t until then that Lin was able to tear her thoughts away from wanting to trace those water droplets with her tongue that she started to process what was being said.

“Damn. Too young for me, but I get the appeal,” The doctor said, nodding in approval as she looked toward the opposite side of the pool.

Lin followed her gaze, only for her expression to turn to outrage when she found a twenty-something-year-old server at the end of it. “She’s young enough to be your daughter!”

“Please, she’s at least in her late twenties.” Su waved off her comment, not taking her eyes off the woman in question. Who was wearing dark jean shorts, green athletic swimwear, and a metal armlet on her left bicep.

Kya placed her hand on her wife’s thigh, gently calming her. “Go get ‘em, Tigerdillo! I’ll handle this one,” she said, squeezing the hard muscle under her hand.

“Thanks, Ky,” Su said with a grateful smile as she grabbed the rainbow-colored pool float from behind their chair.

Ignoring her sister’s words of outrage for being labelled something to handle.

She shook her head as she walked away to the sound of her sisters grumbling.

“You shouldn’t encourage her,” Lin muttered. “She just got out of a twenty-three-year marriage– last week.”

Not that she thought it was wrong for Suyin to get out there, but she feared she’d get hurt and didn’t want to have to deal with her depressed sister for the rest of her vacation.

“That makes her even entitled to flirt then,” Kya said, reclining against her wife’s bent knees. “Besides, I think it’s cute, she’s like a cat-deer on tequila.”

Lin sighed, knowing all she could do was watch after her sister from afar. “You know she’s going to do something stupid, right?”

“Oh, I’m counting on it.” The doctor said, grinning as she took a sip of her wife’s cocktail, with a mischievous glint in her eye. “We’re on vacation. Let’s enjoy the show.”

Lin simply shook her head at her wife’s antics before returning her focus to her book.

Su had positioned herself near the bar, floating close to the young woman, watching her from behind her flame-shaped sunglasses as she rearranged a few lounge chairs.

The anticipation of being noticed by her was making Suyin’s skin tingle.

It didn’t take long for the woman to notice the blatant hovering. She wiped her hands against her shorts, grabbed her tray, and sauntered over, swaying her hips just enough to be distracting. She could feel the older woman’s eyes on her body and tried to fight back a smirk.

“Thirsty?” she asked, voice low and smooth, like honey.

“For something cold,” Su replied, suppressing a shiver at the way the woman’s gaze ran over her figure.

“Name’s Kuvira,” she placed the tray under her arm, removing a notebook from her back pocket and a pen from behind her ear. “What can I get you?” she asked, her eyes never leaving Su’s.

“Su,” she said, flashing a charming smile at the woman. “Surprise me.”

Kuvira’s lips curled as her eyebrow raised sharply. “You sure you wanna trust me with that kind of power?”

Su tilted her head, peering over her glasses. “You seem like someone who knows how to use it.”

With a soft chuckle, the server walked off. Returning a few moments later with a chilled can of mojito.

“House rules – cans only in the pool.”

She popped the tab and took a sip. “Tastes like summer and poor choices.”

“That’s exactly what you ordered,” Kuvira said, winking over her shoulder as she walked away.

Su stared after her, captivated by the sway of her hips as she headed back to the bar.

Over the next couple of hours, Su drank at least four drinks. All under the pretense of staying hydrated, even though in reality, she just wanted an excuse to talk to Kuvira.

Some of their interactions went something along these lines:

Su floated close to the edge, tilting her can as the young woman approached her.

“I seem to have sprung a leak. Guess I need another one… have any other recommendations?”

Kuvira shook her head, smirking as she took the can.

“If we start mixing drinks, you’re gonna end up swimming in your drink before you swim in the pool.”

Su pushed herself up on her elbows as much as she could on her float.

”If you’re the one rescuing me, then I wouldn’t mind drowning a little,” she said, sending the server a wink.

Kuvira paused slightly after handing the other woman her drink, an amused smile taking over her features.

” Is that your idea of flirting? Because you might need to work on your technique.”

Su smiled triumphantly as she leaned back onto the float. “I may be a bit rusty, but it seems to be working just fine. You’re smiling,” she said, lifting her drink in a toast.

Or another instance–

Kuvira bought her another refill, without the woman even needing to ask, “You might wanna be careful. Keep looking at me like that, and I’ll start thinking you’re trying to make me blush.”

Su sent her a teasing smile as she took a sip of her drink, “If I do, do I get a free drink?”

“No. But you might get lucky and get my number,” she said, writing something on her notepad, but was called away before she could give it to the other woman.

By the time mid-afternoon came around, Suyin’s skin was sun-kissed, and her filter had faded away with each drink, just enough that her usual flirt-to-filter ratio had dropped dangerously low.

She made her way over to the shallow end and climbed out of the pool. She returned to the lounge chairs, where Kya was lying between Lin’s legs, listening to music.

The doctor glanced up, removing her earpiece. “How’s it going, love bird?”

Su grabbed her towel. “I think I might have a chance,” she said, drying off. “I just need to up the stakes.”

Kya twirled her earpiece, lost deep in thought, only to clench her fingers around it when an idea hit her.

Smirking, she said, “Why don’t you seductively apply sunscreen. That will grab her attention.”

Su blinked, thinking it over, a mischievous smile spread across her face, before nodding. “Why the heck not?”

Lin groaned softly, raising her book higher like a shield. “I hate this.”

Her words were ignored by her younger sister, who leaned down to rummage through her bag, pulling out her sunscreen, a moment later, and squeezing a generous amount into her hand. She started to slowly rub the lotion into her shoulders, arms, over her chest, and down her thighs.

Kya tapped Lin’s leg and whispered back to her. “She’s watching again. And quite intently I must say.”

Lin rolled her eyes from behind her book, muttering. “Of course she is.”

When Su struggled to reach her back, Lin suggested sarcastically, “Why don’t you ask the server to help you?”

Su froze for a moment before turning to look at her sister, with a beaming smile. “You know what, Lin? That is a great idea!”

“No wai-“

Kya quickly turned and slapped a hand over her wife’s mouth. Muffling her words of protest.

Su missed the interaction between the married couple as she was already strutting along the poolside, eyes locked on Kuvira.

In her distracted state, she didn’t notice the puddle of water on the tile in front of her. Her foot slipped, throwing her off balance. With a shriek and an awkward flail of her limbs, she went down. Straight into the deep end of the pool with a loud splash.

Lin sat up, dropping her book, nearly pushing Kya off her lap to jump in–

But Kuvira beat her to it. She dropped her tray, pulled off her apron from around her waist, sprinted over, and dove in without hesitation.

Moments passed as everyone around the pool held their breath. When they resurfaced, Su clung to her rescuer as if her life depended on it.

“You okay?” Kuvira asked, brushing Su’s wet hair aside as she tread water.

She blinked at her, dazed as she caught her breath.

“Please tell me you’re as good in bed as you are at saving people.”

Kuvira stared, stunned, mouth slightly agape.

On the other side of the pool,  Kya howled with laughter, while Lin groaned into her hands.

Realizing what she’d said, Su immediately hid behind her hands, mumbling “Oh Spirits!”

A grin spread across Kuvira’s red cheeks. “Well… I’ve got a break in fifteen. If you want to find out?”

Su peeked through her fingers. “You're serious?”

The younger woman sent her a cautious, hungry look. “Meet me in the changing rooms?”

She nodded without hesitation.

Kuvira swam to the edge of the pool, helping Suyin get out by raising her out of the water. She followed soon after, wringing out her shirt before picking up her tray. “See you then.” She said, then walked off with a cocky sway.

Su stared after her until she disappeared behind the bar. Once she was out of sight, she headed back to her sister and Kya, feeling giddy.

Once she was in hearing range, she could see the horrified face of her sister.

“I can’t believe you said that.”

Su simply shrugged as she clumsily packed her things. “It worked, didn’t it?”

“Did it work?” Kya asked, grinning, feeling excited. Even though her experienced eyes checked over her sister in law, making sure she didn’t hurt herself when she fell in

“Better. I’m meeting her in the changing rooms.” She said quietly, not wanting any of the other guests to overhear her.

Kya let out a low whistle as Lin pinched the bridge of her nose.

She went through all the possible reasons in her head as to why this meet-up was a bad idea. But when she looked up at her sister and saw the excitement there, with the underlying anxiety in the way she was biting her lip. She let out a breath.

“Just… don’t get caught.”

Su gaped, pausing the folding of her towel. “Did my law-abiding sister, the dang Chief of police, just tell me not to get caught?”

Lin groaned, letting her head fall back against the chair, as she felt two sets of eyes boring into her skin. “I’m on vacation. And I promised Kya I wouldn’t do any police work while I’m here.” She sent her sister a pointed look. “So don’t make me have to arrest you.”

The younger Beifong tossed her bag over her shoulder, smirking at her sister. “No promises,” she said, before darting off.

The couple sat for a minute watching the other woman disappear through the crowd.

“She’s going to cause trouble.”

Kya leaned forward, grabbing her ocean breeze cocktail and taking a sip.

“We both knew that would happen when she showed up at the dock unannounced, with that ridiculous sunhat and flame-shaped glasses and stating, ‘Don’t worry, I won’t be third wheeling. It will be like I’m not even there.”

Lin hummed, looking her over, then stood abruptly.

Kya blinked up at her. “Where are you going?”

Lin offered her a hand. “I’ve had enough of the sun.”

“More like shade,” her wife commented softly.

She ignored her, “And Su isn’t going to be the only one getting laid this trip.”

Kya grinned widely, started to quickly grab their things. “Took you long enough.”

Lin rolled her eyes, grabbed Kya’s hand, and led her with determined steps back to their hotel room.

Su pushed the door open, making her way toward the back of the changing area. She peeked between the lockers, checking for anyone lingering around.

The room smelled of chlorine, sunscreen, and a faint hint of citrus-scented cleaner, but in that moment, Su couldn’t smell a thing. Her nerves were overwhelming her.

She dropped her bag onto the bench, then let her back fall against the cool metal of a locker. Her skin was still damn, her mind dazed as her heart hammered against her rib cage like a dragonfly’s wings. Water from her hair trickled down her spine, raising goosebumps on her skin. Her pulse hadn’t slowed since Kuvira walked away.

“By the spirits… What am I doing?” She muttered, dragging her hand down her face.

These kinds of spontaneous hookups used to be her thing, years ago. Back when she was still traveling with the caravan, in every new town they’d visit, she’d find someone who’d grab her interest, man or woman, have a one-night stand, then move on. However, that was roughly twenty-five years ago, before she met Bataar. Now she was a freshly divorced fifty-year-old, trying to find herself, and was contemplating a quickie with someone who could be mistaken for her daughter.

‘What could she even see in me?’ She thought, looking down at herself.

But she shook off those self-deprecating thoughts.  She knew she looked good. Years of training and leading a dance troop had given her an athletic dancer’s build. Not one as muscular as her sisters, but one strong and graceful.

Her thoughts were interrupted when the door creaked open.

Her breath caught as Kuvira stepped in and locked it behind her. Her clothes were still damn, clinging to her like a second skin, highlighting her toned abs that made Su’s mouth go dry.

She stared openly until she dragged her eyes up the rest of her body, only to meet the young woman’s intense gaze, full of intent.

Her mind went quiet instantly, all doubt disappearing at the sight of those confident forest green eyes.

“Hey,” Kuvira said, her voice low and rough around the edges as she closed the distance between them.

“Hey,” Su said back, fighting back a wince at the crack in her voice.

They stood there in silence for a moment, staring at each other, while the tension slowly rose between them. They both knew why they were there, but neither moved a muscle.

Having had enough of the silence, Kuvira finally broke it. “So,” she started, leaning bacl against the opposite locker, folding her arms. “You planning to follow through on what you asked about out there?”

Su tilted her chin, eyes scanning the figure before her. “Are you?”

A slow, dangerous smirk curved on Kuvira’s lips. “I don’t usually let guests flirt their way into the changing rooms.”

Su stepped around the bench, closing the distance between, just enough to brush her fingertips against the other woman’s damp sleeve. “But you made an exception?”

Kuvira shrugged, “I like confident women,” she said, her voice low and soft. “Even when they’re a bit drunk and accidentally proposition me in front of the whole pool.”

Su winced. “You weren’t supposed to remember that part.”

“Oh, I’m never going to be able to forget that line,” Kuvira said, stepping close, their bodies nearly touching. “I can’t decide if it was either incredibly bold or stupid.”

“I’ve been told I blur that line well,” Suyin said, letting her eyes drop to the other woman’s lips.

Kuvira’s eyes darkened. She leaned in just enough for her breath to caress Su’s lips. “Prove it.” She breathed out, staring into the other woman’s eyes.

That was all the invitation Su needed.

She surged forward, capturing her lips in a firm kiss. Their teeth clacked, making them pull away as they laughed softly before trying again. Softer this time.

It wasn’t long before it deepened. Kuvira responded eagerly, her lips parting, tongue brushing against the other woman’s bottom lip. Her one hand slipped up to the back of Su’s neck, tangling into her hair. While her other slipped around her waist, pulling them tightly together.

The kiss from slow, tuned, heated, then messy, unrestrained. It was the kind of kiss that left no questions unanswered about what was about to happen.

Su pulled back, gasping out, “You’re trouble.”

Kuvira trailed down her neck, sucking softly onto the warm skin beneath her jaw. She whispered against her skin, “You have no idea.”

Fingers tangled into wet hair. Their mouths met again, and again, moving against each other with an intensity that almost felt familiar, as if they’d been here before in some other universe.

In that moment, Suyin’s mind went blank. She didn’t care about the divorce. The fall into the pool, not even what Lin and Kya might be saying. All that she could focus on was this – her.

Kuvira, whose hands were tugging lightly on the strings of her swimsuit top. Not quite daring to untie it, just yet.

Su leaned back against the locker, the metal cool against her hot skin. The lock dug into her back, forcing her to shift slightly to the left.

“We’ve only got ten minutes,” Kuvira uttered, her voice husky, forehead pressed against Suyin’s.

Su grinned, nudging their noses together. “Then we better not waste time.”

Kuvira pulled the tie free, letting the top fall. Her lips trailed slowly down from Su’s throat to her collarbone.

Su let her head fall back, hands loosening the woman’s braid, her fingers threaded into her hair, as she kissed further down. “Just so you know,” she murmured. “It’s been a while.”

Kuvira gripped her waist as she kissed up her neck. “That’s okay.”

A bite at the side of her jaw caused Su to moan softly. “Still think you’re going to remember that line I said?” She asked breathlessly.

Kuvira pulled back just enough to look at her, lips glistening, her eyes full of lust. “Let’s just say it’ll be hard to forget.”

Then, without breaking eye contact, she propped to hr knees. Her hands traced the curve of Su’s body, leaving goosebumps in her wake. She stopped at her waistband before tugging lightly on her shorts.

—————

Fifteen minutes later...

Su pushed open the changing room door, trying to act casual as she walked away. Like nothing inappropriate had just happened.

Even though her lips still tingled, and her knees felt like jelly.

She slung her bag over her shoulder and checked her top inconspicuously one last time. Making sure it was secured before she got any further.

Kuvira emerged a minute later, hair pulled back into a neat low bun, tray in hand, the very image of someone put together.

Their eyes met across the pool.

Kuvira winked and casually ran her thumb over her bottom lip.

Su blushed, nearly tripping over a sun chair in her distracted state.

Notes:

Well, that's as spicy as it gets, folks! I'm more of the hinted heat, kind a person, who just lets it fade to black and lets your imagination do the rest. Personally, it's not my style (nor in my comfort zone) to write anything more detailed, but nonetheless hope you still enjoyed the moment and the build-up just as much!

Chapter Text

Next morning

The sun had barely risen over the hill as Su crept down the resort hallway like a raccoon fox trying to avoid being caught in a trash bin. Her flip flops dangled from her fingers, her hair was wild and tousled, while her tank top was on backwards– or maybe inside out.  But at that moment, she didn’t care.

There was no one awake at 6 am, leaving the hallway quiet and deserted. Which suited her perfectly, since she didn’t want anyone to witness her walk of shame.

She pulled her keycard out of her back pocket, glancing at the door across the hall to Kya’s and Lin’s room. Which, in this case, was an inconvenience because, knowing her sister, even a vacation, she’d want to go for an early morning run, and she wanted to avoid them until after lunch.

She slid the keycard over the lock, releasing a breath of relief when she heard the satisfying beep of the lock unlocking.

“I’m as good at stealth as Aunt Suki.” She whispered to herself.

She stepped inside, closing the door quietly behind her, and —

Click.

The lights turned on.

Su jumped a foot off the ground, whirling around sharply to face the room, pressing herself against the door in fright.

Sitting in the armchair next to the bed, legs crossed, with a cup of hotel coffee in hand, clearly channelling a lurking level of their aunt Azula, was Lin.

“Late night?” She asked calmly, sipping her coffee as if breaking into her sister’s room and waiting for her wasn’t slightly deranged.

“Spirits, Lin!” Su shrieked, clutching one flip-flop to her chest, having lost the other one in her fright. “You nearly gave me a heart attack! What are you doing in my room?!”

“Kya’s across the hall. You would have been fine.” She said coolly, lowering her cup. “Also– you gave me a key.”

“For emergencies!” She cried out in protest, throwing her arms in the air.

“Exactly,” the chief said, placing her cup on the bedside table before standing up. “You disappeared yesterday after nearly drowning in the pool, hooked up with a stranger, then proceeded to go radio silent. So, forgive me for assuming the worst.”

Su groaned, stepping further into the room, muttering. “I didn’t realize I had two moms now.”

“You don’t,” Lin gritted out flatly. “But when my emotionally chaotic sister wanders off after downing at least a litter of mojitos, I get concerned.” She crossed her arms defensively.

“Okay, okay,” Su said, dropping her shoe with a sheepish sigh. “I’ll leave a note next time, alright? Maybe even a full itinerary with a safety plan.”

Lin raised a brow and gave her an unimpressed look.

Su’s shoulders dropped. “Alright, all jokes aside, I’m sorry. I’ll let you know next time.”

“That’s all I’m asking.”

Lin let her arms drop as the tension left her body. She made her way towards the door, squeezing her sister’s shoulder as she passed her. However, she paused at the threshold, glancing back.

“Did you have fun at least?”

Su smiled, shy and genuine. “Yeah… Kuvira’s really sweet. And fun.”

The chief nodded, pleased with her answer. “Good.” She made a mental note of the server’s name to text Saikhan and ask him to do a background check.

She opened the door, stepping into the hallway, when Su’s voice rang out behind her.

“She’s great in bed, too, by the way.”

Lin froze.

Suyin, noticing this, continued in a teasing tone. “Uhh. The things she does with her tongue—“

“NOPE,” Lin barked, slamming the door so hard it shook the room.

Su doubled over in laughter, tears gathering in the corners of her eyes. A slightly more distant slam echoed, undoubtedly from her sister’s room across the hall.

She was pretty sure her sister had managed to wake up all the other occupants of the floor with her escape.

After slightly composing herself, Su took a quick warm shower, letting the steam work in further relaxing her.  She towel-dried her curls, then pulled on a loose tee and soft shorts. Before flopping down onto the bed with a happy sigh. The last twenty-four hours of nerves, excitement, and adrenaline had finally caught up with her.

She unlocked her phone, anticipating a few missed calls from Kya or maybe a new meme from one of her kids, since, as they claimed, that was the new way to communicate.

Those were there of course, but her eyes locked on a message from an unknown number.

Unknown:

Last night was fun. And kinda ridiculous. But mostly fun.

If you’re still on the island and up for it, want to grab a coffee later? Somewhere, a little less chlorine scented. I’d like to actually talk– (not that I didn’t like everything else…)

Also, don’t worry about the vase, I got it from a street bender for a couple of yang’s. Not a big deal.

P.S. This is Kuvira.

She gazed at the screen, her excitement building as a huge grin spread across her face. She buried her face into her pillow to muffle the sound that escaped her throat.

She couldn’t comprehend how this young woman was able to make her feel young again.

She typed out a message, trying to sound casual, as if she hadn’t just squealed into her sheets like a teenager.

Su:

I’m around for the rest of the week. Coffee sounds great– let me know when you're free. And I promise not to fall into any pools this time or knock anything over.

A moment after the message was sent, the typing bubble popped up– then disappeared.

Kuvira:

I’ll believe that when I see it. 10:39 at the beachside cafe?

Su:

It’s a date.

She paused, wanting to give the young woman an out in case this was only a one-time thing for Kuvira. Then added.

Su:

Unless you don’t want it to be. In which case, it would just be coffee with a hot woman I definitely didn’t sleep with yesterday.

After a beat, a message came through.

Kuvira:

Su, it’s a date.

She liked the message, locked her phone, then leaned over to set it to charge on the nightstand.

When she sank back into the soft pillows, she was grinning like a fool. Her face felt as if it was going to crack, she was smiling so hard.

She had no idea how she'd get any rest before her date, with the excitement from her conversation with Kuvira pumping through her veins. She might have to go bother Kya for a bit or Izumi if she wasn’t busy.

But one thing was for sure, maybe this getaway wasn’t such a terrible idea after all.

Notes:

And that's all she wrote, folks!
This is where I'm going to leave these two, during this cute scene, smiling, giddy, and open to new possibilities. I really hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I did writing it.
Let me know what you think.
Thanks for reading!
