“What are your guys’ favorite items that aren't a sword?” Warriors asked. “You've all picked up so much stuff in dungeons during your adventure. What's the item you love the most out of all you've found?”
“Do wearables count?” Legend asked.
“Uhh, no, probably not. I was thinking more along the lines of… boomerangs, hookshots, bows and arrows…”
“What about rods?” the veteran questioned as he dug through his bag, starting to set things out.
“Um… No. That feels too… Main weapon-y.” Warriors made a vague gesture.
“And a boomerang isn't?” Wild muttered at the same time Twilight said, “Isn't a bow and arrow a main weapon?”
Legend's eyes narrowed as he looked up. “Seriously? I think rods should count. And not all rods can be used whenever you want.”
Four leaned over the teen as he pulled out another rod. “Of course the guy with four rods thinks they should count.”
“Five,” he corrected as he pulled out his final rod. “Though I think canes should count too. I've got two of those.”
“If bows and boomerangs count, those should too,” Wild decided.
Warriors held up his hands at the arguments. “Ugh, okay. Your canes and rods can count. Which one is your favorite?”
“None of them,” Legend replied. “My boomerang is my favorite.”
“Then why did you insist on counting the others?!” Warriors cried.
“Because they deserve to be counted.”
“They can be handy, I guess, but really? A boomerang?” Twilight questioned. “That's your pick?”
“You clearly have no true idea how unbelievably useful they are,” Legend scoffed.
“The boomerang is my favorite, too!” Hyrule agreed. “Although, no, maybe the dolls.”
“The what?”
“Nothing,” Hyrule said suspiciously quickly.
“Does my Beetle count?” Sky asked.
Four's brows drew together. “The merchant?”
“What? No! It's like… Well, I guess it's kind of like a boomerang? But you can kinda control it at will.”
Wind’s mouth bunched. “So like a boomerang.”
“So like a boomerang,” Legend agreed.
“Wait, what about bombs? Do those count?” Wind jumped in before Warriors could even decide on whether or not Sky's Beetle counted. A chorus of interest rose from around camp.
“I pick my Sheikah Slate,” Wild said abruptly, once again cutting off Warriors' chance to decide.
More chaos erupted.
“That can't count-”
“That's like five things in one-”
“If he's picking his Slate, I'm picking my pouch! Everything inside it comes with!”
“Legend, that's cheating!”
“He cheated first!”
Warriors pinched the bridge of his nose. “The Slate doesn't count!”
Everyone fell quiet.
“That's not fair,” Wild said after a moment. “I don't have very many options without it.”
“Then you can pick one rune on the Slate, or something else entirely,” he said slowly, thinning patience bleeding into his tone.
Wild opened his mouth, paused, and then fell back into thought.
“Sky, if your boomerang works like- no, your Beetle,” Warriors corrected. This conversation was making his head get all screwed up. “If your Beetle works like a boomerang, it counts. And yes, bombs count.”
“Can I pick a preferred item for land and a preferred item for sea?” Wind questioned. “Because bombs are handy when sailing, but I like being able to steal from enemies with my grappling hook.”
“Steal from enemies?”
“Oh, you can do that too?” Sky asked.
“You guys steal from enemies?”
“Though I like my boomerang a lot,” Wind said glumly as he pulled it out, looking awfully torn as he tossed it. The boomerang looped around the camp in a wildly intricate manner before returning easily to the sailor's hand. “Do I hafta pick?”
Twilight spoke out amongst the jealous stares. “How did you do that?”
“I just do it?” Wind said with a shrug before turning his attention back to the captain.
Warriors groaned. “I was just asking out of curiosity, and for fun. You guys don't need to take it that seriously.”
“No, no, this is important,” Legend said decisively. “Just so you know, I'm judging each and every one of you on your choices.”
“Do instruments count?” the only person who had yet to speak suddenly asked, and Warriors looked grieved that there was yet another clarification question.
“I don't know,” he said with a deep sigh. “I don't feel like they should.”
Time frowned at his response, then pulled out a bottle, his Lens of Truth, and his hookshot, before he settled back into deep thought.
Two of those items seemed baffling to be considered as options to many of those there, but they left him to his careful decision-making in peace, though Wind murmured, “I didn't even think about including bottles.”
“I mean, I was counting my bug net amongst my items,” Sky whispered to him.
“You thought about picking a bug net?” Legend hissed.
“No, but I was still counting it amongst my available items.”
“Cane of Pacci,” Four finally decided. “That's my pick.”
“The thing that flips stuff upside down?” Wind asked with a cringe. He'd had the unfortunate experience of being on the end of that move when he refused to get up one morning, determined to keep sleeping.
“Why would that be your favorite adventuring item?” Hyrule asked curiously.
“Holes,” Four said vaguely, and left it at that, refusing to elaborate when Wind asked for more explanation.
Meanwhile, Sky nodded as he came to a decision. “I think I've decided. It was hard to pick between this and my whip, but I'm going with my Beetle.”
“What is it with you guys and boomerangs?” Twilight asked. “Legend picked it, Hyrule almost picked it, and now you, Sky?”
“It's not a boomerang!”
“Sounds like a glorified boomerang to me,” Legend said.
“It's different. I can see through it! That way, I can send it ahead to look around the area for me.”
“Oh, like with seagulls,” Wind said.
“Like with what?” Legend exclaimed.
“Seagulls.”
Before Legend could demand more than that, Warriors said, “Wind, did you ever decide which one yours is? And no, you can't pick one for land and one for sea.”
The sailor scrunched his nose, then began getting out all his items and lining them up. Starting from the beginning, he pointed at the first item and then began to make his way down the row.
“Eenie meenie miney moe, catch a piggy by its toe-”
“Do pigs have toes?”
“Four per foot, actually,” Four said. “That's what they walk on.”
“What?”
“-when it hollers let it go, eenie meenie miney moe.” Wind stared down at the Deku Leaf for a moment before silently moving his finger back one item. “I pick my Grappling Hook. I like to steal stuff off enemies.”
“It is pretty satisfying,” Sky agreed.
“Bow,” Wild said. “I'm going with bow.”
Warriors raised a brow in surprise. “Not one of your runes?”
Wild hummed. “Remote bombs are tempting - great way to get wood without wrecking my weapons-”
“I still can't believe you get wood by blowing up trees,” Sky muttered.
“-but in the end, the bow serves me better. I mean, remote bombs don't damage enemies much.”
“The bow is a really good choice,” Twilight agreed thoughtfully. “But… I think… I'm picking my clawshots.”
“Not the spinner?” Wind looked disappointed, and Twilight laughed.
“Hookshot,” Time finally said. “I'm choosing my hookshot.”
“Oh, thank goodness,” Twilight said with a breath of relief. “I was worried my ancestor was going to be crazy enough to pick a bottle.”
“I worked really hard for those bottles,” Time said seriously. “And I used them for many things more than fairies.”
“What, like milk?” Warriors teased.
“Among other things,” Time said. His tone had not changed. Had milk been some sort of incredibly essential part of his journey?
“So everyone's chosen,” Warriors said, looking rather relieved. That had become a lot more complicated and argumentative than he'd expected.
“Okay, now if you had to choose from your wearables-” Legend began, and Warriors let out a loud groan as he flopped over.
