Maomao duck down causing the man to punch the one behind her.
"Ow!" the soldier shouted, clutching his face. "Onsou!"
Oh," the man said, realizing it wasn't who he was after. "Sorry Tianyu."
"You!" the boy named Tianyu yelled, getting out a sharpened dagger and throwing it at the man.
He backed away, narrowly missing the blade sharp edge, only to have the handle hit him in the back of the head.
Tianyu caught it a grinned.
Maomao watch at the brutally of these men. "I should leave."
She started to sneak away, but Tianyu noticed her.
"There he goes!" he shouted.
The two of them followed her in hot pursuit, through the dining area. Many of the men were standing in line to get their soup, Maomao again dumped into one of them.
Like line tumble down like dominoes having th soup had fallen everywhere and was now covering everyone who was in the tent.
Groaning all the men glared at Maomao she held her hands in front of her as they began stomping to her.
Maomal nervously grinned. "Um…any chance you know where the medical tent?"
Meanwhile in a far out large tent sat down a group of three men eyeing a large map lay out in front of them.
On the right sat a a slender young man, he has a delicate features and composed expression. He has shoulder-length brown hair which is secured in the back with a hair pin.
"Gaoshun, Basen," he spoke, "should we go for a surprise attack?"
Gaoshun shook his head. "I'm afraid not Rikuson."
"See the invaders are postion in two different locations which will be hard to track." Basen pointed at the red spots on the map.
"I see."
The three glance over at the man sitting opposite of Gaoshun.
He wore a normal imperial armor.
The person is a well-built man, a outstandingly beautiful face and his long dark purple hair in tie in a high ponytail.
His sharp dark pink eyes fix on the map. "Do we yet know the identities of the invaders?"
"We have somewhat of lead Jinshi." Rikuson handed him a scroll. "We believe it might be the Shi clan, though it's more of hunch."
Jinshi read the paper then returning to Rikuson. "What a mess we are in."
"Alright," Jinshi glance over to Gaoshun and Basen, "gather a group of foot soldiers to investigate these two areas."
Basen and Gaoshun bowed. "Once they enter report back."
"Rikuson and I will stay here to train the troops." Jinshi and the other three stood up.
Together the all exited the war tent.
Their eyes widen at the chaos.
Everyone around them were either punching, hitting, or kicking someone else.
A man walked up to them beaten up, he sluted them only to fall face flat on the ground.
Rikuson used his hand to cover his laughter.
Basen repulsive at the sight.
Gaoshun sighed.
Jinshi eyebrow twitch his face completely bewildered.
Gaoshun looked at him almost sadly. "We wish you luck Jinshi." He said, both mounting their horses.
Tugging the reins the two galloped off with the a few ready foot soldiers.
Jinshi watch them till they dissappear from their view. "You as well."
Rikuson smirked over at Jinshi. "Day one."
Sighing Jinshi stomp over to the men.
"Soldiers!"
Everyone froze.
All immediately speared and point at Maomao who was crouch low to the ground, head down, and covering the back of her head.
"He started it!"
Maomao look up, her eyes locking on his.
She had to retrain herself from almost gaging at the man's unbearable handsome face his stare was deadly.
"Is he really a soldier?" Maomao stood up dusting herself off.
Jinshi stroll towrads till he basically hovering above her. "I don't want any trouble in my camp." he snarled.
"I didn’t even start it." Maomao took a step back she realized her mistake. "I mean apologize sir."
Jinshi look at her apprehensively. "What's your name?" he asked.
Maomao blinked. "My name...um..."
"Crap!" Maomao wanted to slap herself. "Think Maomao!"
"Well?" Jinshi tap his foot. "What's you name?"
"I got it!" Maomao straightened up. "My name in Haixo." She firmly, almost trying to convince herself.
"Haixo?" Jinshi asked skeptically. "Let me see your papers."
Maomao pulled out the scroll handing them to Jinshi.
He skimmed over the letter. "La Luomen is your father?" Jinshi asked her, stunned. "The apothecary?"
Maomao nod.
Jinshi gave the letter to Rikuson. "I thought Luomen didn't have son."
"Hm," Rikuson glance at the paper then at Maomao. "I know he adopted a child but the La family barely speak about them."
A beat of sweat run down Maomao forehead.
"Alright," Jinshi stare at Maomao, "I'm guessing you looking for the medical tent?"
Maomao bow her head. "Yes sir," she lifted it back up, "I need to familiar myself in it."
"Rikuson will show the way," Jinshi lips form into a smirk, "however you and the rest of the men here will all spend tonight cleaning up this mess."
"Huh?" Maomao slump her shoulders.
"Then," Jinshi glance at the group, "tomorrow, we start training."
All the men glared directly at Maomao, making threatening faces. Maomao winced pretending they weren't there.
"Not even a day in and I already have enemies." Maomao sighed, she looked back at Jinshi. "Guess he's the captain of these troops, rather young to be one."
Unbeknownst to her Rikuson glanced at Maomao for second.
"Haixo..." he study the boys face there isn't any resemblance to Luomen.
"Could be a distance relative?" Rikuson shook his head, "I shouldn't put too much thought in it."
"Rikuson."
"Yes?" Rikuson is brought from his thoughts.
Jinshi smiled at the crowd of soldier specifically at Haixo. "Let keep eyes on the apothecary."
"I have a feeling he'll be a handful." Jinshi chuckled under his breath.

Maomao yawned as she stretched her body. It was dawn there were a few men barely wake, Maomao had eaten and drank her suitou. She's standing near a long wooden pillar
"I'm a day behind," Maomao said looking at the men form a line awaiting orders from Rikuson, "Hope he makes this quick."
Not long Jinshi exited the war tent.
Maomao cringed at the mere sight in front of her.
Jinshi had removed his coat robe, hanging it on a near by chair. Ordering the awaiting soldiers while shirtless, Maomao study the captain's body.
It was well-built, healthy, and no scars.
"His face doesn't match the body." Maomao muttered.
It's then Rikuson appare next to her. "Alright Haixo I'll escort you to the medical tent," he turned his back, "please come."
Nodding Maomao silently follow Rikuson.
They arrived in a few seconds, Rikuson lifted the tent flat to entered. Inside were two men, they all seem to be around Lakan age, another about her cousin age, working.
Two behind a small wooden desk and the other helping a distress soldier. The area was small, a roll of futon beds, tools for mixing medicine, and a large cabinet probably with herbs inside.
"Gentlemen," Rikuson call out grabbing their attention, "I like you to meet Luomen son."
He step to the side showing Maomao. "This is Haixo, Luomen adopt child and his protege."
Maomao lowly bow. "Honor to meet you all." She lifted her head. "Please take care of me."
The other return her gesture though resume their work.
Rikuson chuckled. "Good luck." He exited the tent.
Gone Maomao went straight to cabinet scanning at the drawers labeled with different herbs.
After she was done she walk to the two men at the desk. "Is there anything you wish for me to do?"
The younger one nodded. "Yes could you help the soldier over there?" He pointed at the man. "He has trouble sleeping, we gave him a few power medicine only to complain it isn't work."
"Hm," Maomao rub her chin, "may I see the notes you have of him?"
The older man nod reaching into a pile of documents and handling a single paper to her. Maomao read carefully, the soldier had trouble sleeping at night causing stress and lash outs.
She headed to the cabin of herds, grabbing a few Maomao used a mortar and pestle crushing them before putting them in three separate envelopes into a paper bag.
Going to the soldier Maomao gave him the bag. "Boil these speared and see which helps with you sleep." The soldier took it, Maomao continued. "If you need any refills let us know."
Thanking her the soldier left.
The younger man walked up to Maomao. "Sorry we didn't introduce ourself, I'm Li one of the physician."
He pointed to a slightly chubby brown hair man. "That's Guen our doctor." Then to other standing next to Guen who had a glare on his face. "Finally Liu, a bit scary looking but he's softy."
Li stare at the document in Maomao. "So Luomen taught you?"
"He did," Maomao replied returning to the herbs cabinet, "after all he raised me and I wanted to know by choice."
Maomao wanted to glared at Li, she knew what he truly was saying. "Was forced or voluntary."
The entire day Maomao spend familiarizing herself with the herbs and the limited books that were provided.
Closing her book she retired for the day, outside it now sunset. Maomao heard the sound of wooden clanking coming from the center.
Walking towards the loud noise she saw that the men were still training. A few were slump on the ground completely exhausted as the rest are in pair using wooden swords against their opponents.
Out the corner of her eye, Maomao spotted Jinshi overlooking at the troops obviously disappointed.
His glaze shift to Maomao direction, deeing her Jinshi montion her to stand next to him, Maomao obey.
She bow to him. "Evening Jinshi-san and Rikuson-san."
"Evening apothecary," Jinshi smiled politely, "finished for the day?"
Maomao nod. "Yes, tomorrow I continued to study the materials we have."
Both men hummed.
Now that Jinshi thought about it he didn't have time to fully study Haixo appearance.
He was rather thin and petite, barely coming up to his shoulders, with hair that reminded Jinshi of dark leaves in summer while Haixo face had a light dusting of freckles.
However the thing that got his attention the most were Haixo deep, blue eyes.
They had a sharp, piercing look as if Haixo were examining his very thoughts.
Surprisingly, Haixo looked like he couldn’t have cared less about what Jinshi had to say.
"Interesting." Jinshi suddenly stood up he grab a bow and arrow. "Haixo, ever used one of these?"
"I had," Maomao took the items in her hands, "father advised me to fend for myself at all cost."
"Is that so..." Jinshi hummed an understanding. "Then why don't you show me by hitting those targets."
Maomao seeing the bullseye front of an open field, she glance to Jinshi who was smiling.
Her eyes narrowed with disgust, as if Jinshi were a roach she spotted on an otherwise clean surface.
Rikuson used his sleeve to cover his laughter.
Sighing Maomao walk to the practice spot. Not long Jinshi and the troops decided to watch her at side lines.
Maomao strolled up to the mark and readied her arrow. She carefully eyed the target, her father's words came to mind.
"You just have to stay focused and keep steady Maomao. Slow your breathing."
Maomao adjusted the bow, judging the speed of the airflow around her, the long stretch of land that lay between her and the target.
Taking a deep breath Maomao released the arrow. The arrow unleashed itself from the bow at tremendous speed.
Time stopped then the arrow splintered the wooden bullseye.
Without waiting Maomao hit the last two targets, all three a perfect shots.
Peeking over her shoulder, the men had stop to witness Maomao display. They all cheered tossing in compliments mostly about her perfect aimed.
Jinshi silenced the crowd. "Impressive apothecary," he clap going up to Maomao, "good to know we have a archer in our ranks."
He reached patting her shoulder their eyes met.
Maomao didn’t answer.
Giving him a disgruntled look before Maomao shoved his hand off her shoulder like it had been some irritating gnat. She brush off her shoulder as if to remove any trace of his touch from her.
"Here," she returned the bow to Jinshi, "I shall rest for today."
Jinshi blinked, taken aback by the foreign response.
Usually people will be star eyes when Jinshi praise them.
This… was new to him.
Jinshi only forced a smile and wish Hixson a good rest. "He's a strange fellow." Yet the particular scent of herbs and earth reached his nose...he relaxed.
Hundreds of horses stormed by, shaking the ground.
Bandit sat upon them, malice written on their horrible faces.
Suddenly, the hooded leader in the front came to halt.
Out of the trees, a young man walked up to the figure.
"Lord Shishou," he said, bowing before him. "We found scouts along the road."
Shishou removed his hood, his face completely calm. "Where are they?"
Just then, another of his group came out shoving the two soilders onto the dirt. "We caught them spying in the woods."
Shishou stepped off of his horse and towards the two cowering soldiers. They were both dressed in traditional imperial armor.
"So," he spoke in a soft tone. "You found me and the Huns."
One them shot up. "The Emperor will stop you!" He shouted bravely.
His comrade looked over at him and shook his head, terrified.
Shishou eyes stare blank at him. "As if he will," he took a step back, "he's preoccupied with other matters. And the man is too caring of his people, I'm amazed he even asked for soldiers to protect them."
The first man took a fighting stance. "We have hundreds of soilders far more experience than these tribes people."
"Hm," Shishou glance at him, "then how about you send a message?"
One of Huns grab the brave man by the neck. "He may send his strongest, but victory will be at my end."
Dropping him the two soldiers ran off with looks of terror on their faces.
Shishou mounted his horse and turned the Hun who had the man by the neck. "Lixo, how many men does it take to deliver a message?" he asked.
Lixo held out a bow, he aimed it to where the soilders had gone. "One."

Chapter Text
For the pass month Maomao had been going back and forth with her day.
Ever since she shot those arrow perfectly Jinshi had her in training with the others.
During the morning she'll be at the medical tent then from afternoon to night going to train.
It was insufferable especially when Jinshi always finds ways to speak with her. He'll ask Maomao question about her life and the herbs she uses.
In training he's corrects Maomao constantly through her stances and attacks.
It was night time when Maomao gone to the silent lake. She scanned the arean, "Good their all gone." She quickly stripped off her robes hidding them in a nearby tree.
Jio stood not far, he gave a worried stare at Maomao.
She sighed. "Just because I look like a man doesn't mean I have to smell like one. Hygiene is very important."
Jio huffed back to eating grass.
Maomao walk into to the water she grinned being wash off the grime and sweat off.
Once she was finished cleaning herself, Maomao decided to stay a bit longer. She glance up at the moon shining beautifully in the lake.
"Wonder how their doing," Maomao gently stroke her wet hair, "they probably losing their minds expect dad."
She was deep in her thoughts that Maomao didn't hear another person coming into the lake.
"Oh, Haixo!"
Maomao eyes widen as she spund to see Jinshi not far from her. She quickly ducked into the water using a lilly pad to cover her lower area.
"So you too bath at night?" Jinshi smiled luckily he stop far to not see Maomao figure.
"Yes," Maoma nod inside she was panicking, "Dang, my freckles are wash off and my voice is normal. Have to make an excuse!"
She swam behind a boulder her back against it.
"Wait!" Jinshi followed, "I didn't mean to offend you."
"Um...I rather you stay on the other side," Maomao deepen her voice as best she could, "I'm a bit self conscious about my body."
"Oh I see," Jinshi lead against the boulder both now on the other side, "I apologize Haixo."
"It's no problem," Maomao put the lilly pad down on the water, "you...don't bath with the others?"
Jinshi chuckled. "Have you seen the way they act," he splash a bit of water on his head, "I prefer the silent than the chaos."
Maomao hummed.
"You know Haixo," Jinshi peek over his shoulder, "you don't talk much about your family why is that?"
"What's there to say?" Maomao cup her hands together staring at the water in her plams, "I have caring father, a decent house and a warm meal everyday."
Jinshi nod listing to his words. "I must ask, how much do you know? I know Guen is our doctor but I think he doesn't much outside his field sometimes."
"As my father's child," Maomao began, "I learn many things like white power makeup."
"Believe or not, the power can cause illness,” his voice calm and collected without the slightest indication of emotion. “In the brothels near my home, there were many courtesans who used high-end powder to lighten their skin. It poised them slowly."
Jinshi listened to Haixo.
"Draining all of their vital sparkle little by little until there was nothing left. They traded the fullness of their lives for a fleeting moment of beauty. And lost everything in the bargain.” Maomao finished.
He spoke with the wisdom of someone beyond their years. If Jinshi hadn’t know better, he would’ve thought he was listening to a talented physician with years of experience in medicine.
Jinshi slighty laughed. "He really is a amazing teacher."
Maomao, felt his compliment genuine, she couldn't help but smile. "Thank you Jinshi-san."
A pause went between them.
"Hey Haixo..."
"Yes Jinshi-san?" Maomao responded.
"Do you think our troops are ready to fight?" Jinshi voice sounded hesitant. "You all have completed the training."
"To be honest," Maomao glance up at the sky, "I say fifty-fifty for these are young men who know little of war and men who seen it."
Jinshi eyes lowered knowing too what level of their outcome will be.
"However," Maomao continued, "For what it is worth…I think you are a great captain."
Jinshi smiled sincerely. "Thank you Haixo," he gave Haixo one last look, "I'll leave first hope you sleep well."
Maomao stay in her spot for fives minutes until sure Jinshi was fully gone.
She whistled to Jio coming over and covered Maomao as she wrapped herself in a towel.
Seeing her clothing on Jio back, she immediately dried herself before dressing. "That was a close one."
"As handsome Jinshi-san is I never want to see him naked again." Maomao cringed at the sight of him. "Ugh, I need sleep now."
Back in his tent, Jinshi saw Rikuson inside. "Rikuson, what brings you here?"
Rikuson handed him a scroll. "Urgent news from Gaoshun and Basen."
Jinshi read the letter carefully....a look a worry replace his clam feature.
"Gather the troops and our medics. Pack anything we'll need for the journey including weapons." Jinshi order as he equipped his armor.
"Inform all we're needed at the front." Jinshi tie his sword to his belt. "We leave immediately."

Chapter Text
Maomao sneeze.
"Bless you." Guen said who was sitting next to her on the wooden wage. "I have an extra coat in my bag I can lead you, Haixo."
"It's alright," Maomao wipe her nose, "didn't Jinshi-san say we'll be arriving at the other camp today?"
Guen nod. "Hopefully before nightfall."
Maomao hummed pull her hanfu cloak closer, she looked next to her. A couple of the soldiers were either walking or on a horse, which were five, all tired and worn from the traveling.
They had left several days ago. Jinshi announce they'll be departing to the front lines as the first army request backup.
Maomao turn her attention to Jinshi on his horse leading them with Rikuson beside him.
Everyone was wearing their armors including the medical team, provided by Jinshi.
"I swear..."
Maomao glance over to a group of men.
"We are marching into battle but feel a lot like cattle."
The man next to him nod. "Our aching feet aren't easy to hold."
Suddenly a young soldier Maomao remembered was called Tianyu, rush up to the group.
"Hey, think of instead a girl worth fighting for!" He smiled happily.
Maomao gave a confuse expression. "Eh?"
Tianyu yanked Maomao out the wage wrapping an arm around her shoulder. "Think of it, girls cheering as we march victoriously!"
One pop right behind them. "I'll love her to be pale like the moon and eyes that shine like stars."
Tianyu flexed his arm. "They'll marvel at my strength and battle scars."
Onsou playfully elbow Maomao arm. "Bet all the local girls in your town found you as quite the charmer."
She undetached herself from Tianyu deciding to walk a bit.
Jinshi chuckled seeing Haixo irritated face.
"Seems like you’re growing fond of Haixo." Rikuson pointed out with a smile.
Jinshi gave a questionable look at Rikuson. "I wouldn't say fond...more like amused."
"As if," Rikuson countered with a knowing look, “You go on and on about how Haixo glares at your discretion every time.”
Jinshi became silent.
Did he really go on about Haixo like that?
It’s just that Jinshi had very few people he comfortable around. Jinshi couldn’t explain why this excited him so much just that it was a part of feelings he hadn’t felt in a long time.
Excitement.
Something new.
As strange as it sounded like, it was almost liberating when Haixo gave him those look of disgust.
Jinshi knew Haixo was annoyed by his presence clearly wanting him to leave.
And was hilarious.
It was refreshing from a lifetime of being seeing nothing but lust-filled, adored expressions.
Haixo looks of disgust were as nectar of the heavens to him.
“Jinshi-san?”
“Huh?” Jinshi asked, shaking his head coming back to reality. He had been so lost in thought that he hadn’t realized Rikuson was speaking again.
"Said Haixo is coming this way." Rikuson said tilting his over his shoulder, sure enough the young lad had come over to them.
"Got a little to rowdy back there?" Jinshi smirked as Haixo nodded. "A bit of fun doesn't hurt anyone."
"Not for myself," Haixo groaned rubbing his forehead, "need to get away before they started singing like drunk sailors."
Jinshi shook his head jokely, a sudden thought came to him. "Haixo, do you perhaps have a certain girl waiting for you back home?"
Maomao eye twitch staring at Jinshi like he grown another head.
"It'll wouldn't a surprise if I told you no," Maomao clear her throat, "people take one look at me and see I'm not marriage material."
For unknown reason Jinshi felt relief, maybe because it wouldn't be hard for Jinshi to break the news if Haixo doesn't survive this war.
That had Jinshi pause, the thought of Haixo dying didn't sit wee with him.
In the back the three can continue to listen to the soldiers conversation.
"Girl will see I have no flaws and I'm a major find."
"Thinks he such a lady killer."
"Jokes on you I've got a girl back home who's unlike any other."
Jinshi lower himself to Haixo ear. "The only girl who'd love him is his mother."
Rikuson cover his mouth to surpress his laughter while Maomao hid behind her sleeve not lying the joke is slightly funny.
However before Maomao can open her mouth they all froze.
Not far they stood in a burnt out village completely ruined. Jinshi and Rikuson both tugged their horse having go forward the rest following.
Stepping in the scent burnt flesh, Maomao used her sleeve to at least breath through safety.
Everywhere they turned laid nothing but snow mixed in with burn ashes.
"Search for survivors!" Commanded Jinshi having the soldiers spread.
Insteadly the medical team unpack a few items. "Even with these supplies," Guen whispered, "I don't think it'll be enough for a group of ten."
Letting do their thing Maomao went to join in on the sreach. She step into a burn house scanning the area till her eyes land on little rage doll.
Gently picking it up Maomao held it to her chest. She then heard a groan from underneath broken wooden roof then another.
Quickly she yelled for help in a flash Jinshi came digging through the snow, Maomao heart pound waiting.
They gasp.
"Basen! Gaoshun!"
The father and son were heavy wounded also unconscious. Li and Liu rush to aid them carefully moving them into the wage.
Staying behind Jinshi can only stare at the devastating village. "I don't understand their army weren't supposed to here till another week as Gaoshun written."
"Captain!"
Maomao and Jinshi turned their heads, Rikuson is standing on a hilltop his finger pointing down.
They walked towards him.
Jinshi gasp at the brutal scene.
An army of soldiers lay dead in a bloody battle field. Their body went from miles, weapons and armors scattered everywhere.
"An ambush," Maomao glance at the burn village, "just how big is our enemies forces?"
Jinshi noticed a shang zhou helmet not far from them. He gracefully took in his hands, thinking how inhumane these men were slaughtered.
Maomao and Rikuson watched Jinshi walk to the opposite side of the hilltop.
Alone Jinshi unsheathe his sword and buried it into the snowy ground then set the helmet on top.
He kneel bowing in respect of these fallen soldiers.
Maomao approach him, she can't comprehend Jinshi emotions nor feel like many do upon death or one passes.
Only thing she could do is lay a gentle hand on Jinshi shoulder in response he softly squeeze it.
Taking a deep breath Jinshi stood up, he'd face his troops. "Our enemies are moving fast, we'll make better time to Empire through the blizzard path."
Jinshi hop onto his horse eyes sharp as he stare at them. "We're China's last hope."
"Li, Liu," he called out to the two, "take Basen and Gaoshun to the nearest village."
"Haixo and Guen will be coming with us." Jinshi tugged his horse reins, "now move out!"
Maomao stayed longer to at least pay respect. She place the doll against Jinshi sword then bow, leaving to catch up.
Now the weighed is heavier on their backs.
"What a world we live in..." Maomao mumbled.
It was the dead at night when Jinshi decided to visit Haixo. He was worried that maybe he rope Haixo into this without his consent.
He can shoot an arrow but Jinshi seen how Haixo handles a sword very poorly.
Then again he'll probably visit the doctor too.
Jinshi heard rushing inside, sighing he push the tent fabric. "Haixo sorry to interrupt you I wa-"
He freeze at the sight.
Haixo is standing in the middle, it wasn't the fact he was undressing that caught Jinshi eyes.
Rather the dudou covering his chest...and curve body...
Blue eyes lock onto purple ones.
"Haixo-o..." Jinshi stuttered "you're...a woman?"
The two heard footsteps coming towards them, without hesitation Jinshi unclip his hanfu cloak and wrap it around Maomao body.
"Pretend to be asleep," Jinshi whispered he pull down the hood, "I'll handle it then we can talk."
Maomao nod watching Jinshi exited her tent to confront whomever was outside. Although knowing she'll been discovered and will face execution; Maomao could think about her two fathers and cousin.
What will happen to them?
Will their family be banish or worst kill for treason?
All because of her stupidity.
"I could convince Jinshi-san it was my idea," Maomao clutch her hands, "need to chose my words carefully."
Five minutes went by, Jinshi had manage to dismissed the soldier claiming that Haixo was sleeping.
He re-enter the tent.
Fully clothed, Maomao sat down. "Thank you Jinshi-san."
"Your welcome," Jinshi sat on the ground Maomao did the same, "now oblivious your real name isn't Haixo so what is it miss?"
The girl frowned, still looking nervous, but answered, “M-Maomao, sir. Just Maomao.”
Jinshi raised an eyebrow how unusual her name was. "Sound like a cat name." he teased.
"I… I get that a lot." Maomao admitted a grumpy expression on her face.
Jinshi chuckled slightly though his tone became low. "Well...Maomao~" he gave her a dazzling smile. "Care to explain why your impersonating a soldier?"
Maomao let out a long breath. Jinshi watched her with curiosity as she seemed to take a few seconds to collect herself.
The young woman straight herself and Jinshi found his teasing grin fading. From there Maomao told her story about her father and his condition.
She spoke calmly without the slightest indication of emotion. "So then… now that you know the truth, what do you intent to do with me?" Maomao held her breath waiting for the verdict.
Jinshi shook his head. "Nothing..."
"Huh?" Maomao blurred out, "why?"
"Isn't it clear?" Jinshi replied standing up, "what your doing is very honorable, maybe not to many but in my view it is."
Jinshi glance down at the young girl, there was no other way for him to put it but that… she was beautiful.
However the thing that stood out the most was her face. There wasn’t a single freckle in sight—in fact, her complexion had beautiful skin without a single blemish with a slightly rosy glow, most likely from the chilly wind.
"Jinshi-san?" the apothecary said as her deep-blue eyes pierced through him like a knife.
"Rest," Jinshi finally was able to force out. "Don't worry about anything, your secret is safe with me."
Jinshi quickly left the tent.
He walked until he stood outside his tent.
His gaze turning to the starry sky… finding himself thinking more about those blue eyes again.
Maomao.
Jinshi smiled to himself. "The name suits her."
