I saw a fanart of Jinshi and Maomao’s children and completely blacked out — this fic is what came out of that.
Maomao becomes Jinshi’s consort, and then everything spirals. Assassins, poison, political chaos, secret babies — you know, courtship.
Somewhere in all the mess, they make something real. Canon beginning (kidnapped, maid, poison taster). Starts with MM being presented to court as lady La. She hates it and is unhappy. First couple chapters a back and forth about the emperor wanting MM and JS to marry (thinks it’s a good match and that they love each other - true), and MM being upset about it and upset that the emperor is trying to use JS affection for her against himself (doesn’t want JS to be used). Eventually she agrees, and they kiss. They get married and have sex. In this rendition, Gyokuyou didn’t have a son and is not empress. MM gets pregnant and talks to LK and FX. She is worried, but getting more used to the idea.

After marrying JS, MM becomes a constant target of assassination attempts, always guarded by Lihaku and Basen. The Mi Clan traces the poison’s origin to the West, prompting the Emperor to send JS, MM, and Gyokuen to investigate. Despite JS’s protests, MM insists on joining as both wife and apothecary.
The expedition includes physicians Tianyu, Li, and You, as well as Yao and En’en. Rikuson serves as envoy. During the journey, MM suffers from riding fatigue and illness, which she hides until collapsing with fever. JS’s care and the team’s vigilance prevent the illness from spreading. In a drought-stricken village, MM diagnoses the cause—an invasive plant draining the soil—earning the villagers’ gratitude.
On the ship to the Western capital, MM falls ill again but recovers with JS’s doting care. Upon arrival, Governor Gyokuen greets them warmly, publicly praising MM’s past heroism to strengthen their standing. Inside his mansion, political tension brews as nobles and women vie for JS’s attention. That night, JS and MM’s intimacy resumes, deepening their bond.
At Gyokuen’s grand ball, alliances form amid subtle rivalries. Merchant Liu Tao thanks JS for past aid, while the ambitious Madam Jin tries to marry off her daughter, earning JS’s cold rejection. Later, the young noblewoman Ying confides she loves a commoner but faces an arranged marriage. JS, MM, and Liu Tao quietly arrange a way for her to escape the match.
Days later, MM explores the secluded courtyard of their residence, fascinated by local flora. JS surprises her with a hidden clearing of rare medicinal herbs, leading to shared discovery and a tender, humorous exchange when she finds a potent abortifacient plant.
Back in their quarters, JS studies reports on the fugitive they’re pursuing—someone who may be baiting them deliberately. MM advises using Gyokuen’s influence to expose the culprit, and JS agrees. He reflects on the political tightrope between the Capital and the West, longing for a life free of intrigue.
While JS meets Western officials, MM visits the market with Chue, Xiaolan, Lihaku—and the overeager noble Hulan. At the council, JS faces hostility from merchant Zhou Lang but calmly reasserts his authority. Meanwhile, MM finds a stall selling foreign herbs at suspiciously low prices. The vendor’s husband, a dismissed port official, still imports rare goods despite losing his clients.
That night, MM tells JS she suspects the man is secretly supplying poisons or rare ingredients to their fugitive. Their discussion turns intimate until Chue delivers a sealed letter from the merchant’s guild—addressed to JS. Its timing confirms that someone is watching them closely. -

As a baby, MM is promised to the emperor’s son, Zuigetsu. Really doesn’t want to be. Night before the wedding, she visits the brothel for the first time to let go and have a night of fun and dancing. She meets a masked man. Find it through conversation that MM punching JS when he tried to kiss her. Next day, they get married (funds out he was the masked man, furious about it but he says next time you decide to misstep, have the decency to make sure no one comes to tell me) and their wedding night is just a fight and MM faking sex (cut her hand for the blood). Being a real brat. Kinda hate her atm (poor JS). Next day is the banquet to celebrate the wedding. Her family shows up (all seem to love each other). Lahan tells her about what he notices (Shi girl watching her and Riku asking about her - suitors?). Luoman and Lakan give her a perfume (her recipe) and a medical kit (she will always be a doctor to them). First dance with JS. He is sweet and she is starting to lose a bit of her control/walls (I hope). Later, while reading an erotic book, MM was playing with herself while JS watches (scandalous). MM and JS have to go to a banquet with Shishou and fam. They go through ballroom dancing lessons (definitely getting closer). On their way to Shishou’s (really long carriage ride), MM falls asleep on JS shoulder. Stop at a inn, and JS starts to initiate something, but MM stops it and then JS goes in the bathroom to finish (MM watching…). The next day, they finish their journey to Shishou’s, and have tea with the Shi fam. Barbs sent to MM the entire time, and she is super upset. Thinks JS didn’t defend her, and he tells her how he has. Getting closer again (hopefully…). They attended the ball, and get a win over the Shi clan (made the 3 bow during the ball). Lakan and Fengxian are there too. Fengxian loves MM in this rendition. JS introduces MM to ministers at the ball (all proud and lovey, as he is), and eventually goes back to her family (Lahan commenting on how to get himself a hubby like JS). Chou’u bumps into MM (she is nice to him). Then JS asks her to dance, and it is super intimate and lovey. They decide to leave, and see Shenmei is gone (Loulan and shishou say bye, and they seem not so shitty without her). Finally have sex, and the 3 LiW overhear. Also, Xiaolan heard a rumor that Loulan is getting sent to the palace. After being ordered to interrogate her innocent friend Lishu, Maomao is forced to play the cruel inquisitor to protect her under imperial scrutiny. Lishu’s trembling confession—that Zuigetsu replaced Maomao’s belongings with gifts for another woman—shatters her. In private, Maomao drinks artemisia tea, symbolically rejecting him and the possibility of bearing his child. Yet the bitterness steels her resolve: if the empire wishes to use her, she will become indispensable, untouchable. She confronts Zuigetsu through strategy disguised as civility—a tense dinner and a game of Go that blurs into a confession, a fight, and at last a night of desperate intimacy. It is not reconciliation, but surrender to exhaustion. When Zuigetsu leaves her sleeping to attend Lady Loulan’s reception, he feels every step as betrayal. At court, he faces his father, Emperor Yang, and the hollowness of duty. Ordered to maintain appearances with Loulan but not to touch her, Zuigetsu returns home with guilt burning in his veins. MM is raised by Lakan and Fengxian, but JS is the imperial brother (pretending to be the rear palace manager even though they are married) and they get married (she is the worthy consort). MM wants power and is super insulted with her reception into the palace (no fanfare and no visit the first night). Xiaolan is made her poison taster (really nervous, MM makes her the poison taster in name only - maid instead). She also has 2 LiW (Huifen & Qiuniang). She thinks a bit poorly of her family, but now misses them. Gyokuyou tells JS that she is after power (JS thinks he is just a pawn that was married off, so he thinks she must be upset about marrying just a pawn). JS visits her pavilion pretending to be Jinshi, but she knows that he is lying. When MM gets to the palace, lihua’s son was just born. After some months, the face powder incident happens, but MM tells them both directly what the issue is, and goes directly to help the prince. She knows about the face powder because she used to help Louman treat courtesans at verdigris. She helps both children, and they are both getting better, but then the prince dies. MM visits Gyokuyou, and JS visits and the fuyou ghost incident happens. After the lady fuyou leaves with her soldier, the emperor comes to visit. The emperor requests to heal Lihua (he visited her in her pavilion at night, misunderstanding from others, and apparently they had a drinking contest that she won). She goes and determines right away that Shin is poisoning her and is the cause of the prince’s death. She nurses Lihua back to health (her and her 3 ladies, moving in for the time, and steadily getting less healthy due to stress and neglect of herself). JS is falling in love with MM (always thought she was beautiful, but now thinks she is also compassionate and intelligent and marvelous). He has not visited her as the imperial brother the entire half a year she has been there (Gaoshun is upset with him), but he says he will visit her the night of the upcoming garden party (JS is afraid to tell her who he is and afraid she will hate him). At the garden party, MM is greeted by several of the consorts, but JS is not there. Ailan (GKY’s poison taster) is poisoned. MM saves her and takes the poison to find out info. MM has lunch with lishu (who is super excited about it) and JS visits (MM is dismissive). Also find out the Anshi is the one who arranged the marriage. JS still hasn’t visited MM as the imperial younger brother yet.
