Chapter 1: Your Award

Chapter Text

Jagged breaths. Panic ran through her veins, coming out of the stage trying to hide.

And there they stood, with fear in their eyes. Mira, Zoey.

“What? How are you here? You were just on stage. That wasn't you? Oh. Oh, thank goodness.”

A step back.

“How do you have patterns?” Zoey asked, a quiver in her voice.

She tried to explain.

“You were hiding this from us this whole time?” Mira interjected.

Rumi, continuing on, found desperate words. And she slipped his name.

“Jinu? You're working with him?” Zoey felt betrayed.

She covered, and begged.

“How could we be together if we can't tell your lies from your truths, Rumi?”

“I knew it. I knew it was too good to be true.”

Begging.

“….Don't leave! Don't leave! I can still FIX IT!!”

A pink wave washed over the hunmoon.

Mira raised her weapon, tears in her eyes

and Zoey followed her lead.

“I’m sorry.”

That's when she felt a sting beside her waist, sharp, painful. Her mouth agape trembling. Tears blocked the vision of blood coming out, her weapon glowing blue.

Zoey stood in shock, Rumi bled, and by her blade.

Demons don't bleed, she bled. How did she bleed?

Mira just watched, unable to comprehend.

And Rumi, Rumi ran.

To Jinu, to Celine.

And after.
She continued to run as fast as she could.

—--------------------------------------

Mira and Zoey took about 5 minutes to step out of that shock.

And took off in the direction of Rumi.

Sprayed out apologies and called her name countless times. Still confused.

And of course, Of Course, the saja boys set up a trap at that moment.

“What are we going to do?”

Mira did not respond. Zoey shook her, hands on her shoulders.

“You thought you found a family? You don't deserve one. You never have.”

“Mira, do you hear me, my voice. Mira!”

Mira shook her head.

“Zoey?” And she started to cry. Tears slipped through her friends eyes as well.

Pulling out of a tight hug after a long moment of silence, the first word that came out was

“Celine.”
—---

The wind howled, and leaves shook.
Pine trees surrounded a woman. There she sat on the grass dirt all over her clothes.

The branches felt like they were getting thicker,
The breeze became harsher, angrier.

And the woman cried, full of resentment and pain, to the one and only person she could blame herself.

She felt trapped, helpless.

Then a shriek. The hunmoon was dying.

She only cried harder, ugly tears running through her soft skin till she ran out of breaths.

Didn't know how long of a time passed but after a while her tears quit, yet her sorrow continued.

That's when she heard steps. Her head shot up searching for the source. And saw two pained girls.

“Celine!” called Mira.

Only the woman started crying again.

Neither Zoey or Mira had seen Celine cry before, she was always, always stoic, strict, strong. Now, now she looked fragile, and weak.

The silence was only disturbed by her whimpers.

They called her name again, softer this time.

Half-words came out of Celine's mouth. Not understandable.

The two grew closer to her to hear her whispers.

The only thing that they heard clearly was “my fault”

Rumi had come here, that much was obvious. But what happened?

They didn't dare ask, just listened to her sobs, trying to give comfort.

Another shriek.

The hunmoon gone.

At this all their heads raised, looking at the direction of the concert. And the pink flame far away.

Must have been giant but it looked so small from here.

No smoke, just a disturbing light. Gwi-ma.

Chapter Text

They needed to be quick.

The Namsan Tower was full of people, barely any space to move. The red lighting dimmed the shadows so the only thing that you could see was the stage itself, and that flame.

People were acting like moths that found light growing nearer and nearer, faster and faster. The fire only grew.

The song itself had finished a good while ago, no one noticed, or seemed to care. The light, it was so enticing.

So people just walked to it, left speechless at its beauty and comfort.

That is until heads started to turn to a voice, no, voices coming from behind. They were familiar, nostalgic even.

No one knew what happened but it was like waking up from a dream or rather sleepwalking.
They saw the fire for what it was, a fire.

Then chaos, people running through each other trying to get away, to not die by the flames. But through it all you could hear a melody still, an old one.

It was these voices that helped give just even a little bit of safety to everyone.

🎶
“We are hunters voices strong,
Slaying demons with our song,
Fix the world and make it right,
When darkness finally meets the light.”
🎶

No one really understood what happened in those short minutes but the fire was gone. And so was the Saja Boys, and the familiar voices that had come.

Some thought it was a part of the show, others thought there was a technical issue or that they dreamed it all.

Either way, nothing else happened.

They waited there for hours and eventually left.

Left confused.

—---
Celine sat on the huntrix couch, Mira and Zoey sat on the floor, waiting for someone to break the silence and finally explain what the hell just happened.

The air held tension and the annoying sound of the clock ticking only helped raise it.

“I don't know where to start.” Celine said.

“Are demons evil?” asked Mira desperate for the answer, Zoey had a storm going through her head.

“I don't know.” Said Celine “all my life I was taught that, so that's what I taught you. And I really believed it.

I fear I still believe it. Even when a demon helped us today, even when everything points to us being wrong. Cause if I was wrong — I couldn't even look at her, she she asked me to kill her, I, I couldn't I . Rumi I, it's all my fault.”

“We're all to blame.” Mira spoke after a while.

“No, you don't know what I did. My friend fell in love with a demon, I thought that maybe he cursed her, spelled her, anything but admitting that maybe not all were bad.

I tried to warn her, she would always say ‘don’t worry it's fine, I know what I'm doing.’ and she,

She had a baby with him, with that thing. A girl, but she grew sick, ill to the point of asking me to take care of her child. How could I say no?

I raised Rumi.”

“You knew!”

Celine flinched a little.

“Yes,
I told her to cover up when the patterns started to show, said that no one can know. Once the hunmoon turned gold they would go away. I trained her, made sure she would achieve this to get rid of that filthy infection. But they only grew. I tried to hide a part of her, it ate her alive.

But what was I supposed to do?

As hunters we're supposed to keep demons on their side of the hunmoon, kill them when they cross, and protect the people.

We don't know anything about them, just that they need to die. Look where that led.”

Everyone got quiet once more. That was a lot.

Rumi had lied to them but only because she was told to, no, raised to. And demons, what were demons? Jinu helped them. He betrayed gwi ma, now he was gone too.

So Rumi wasn't evil, it was not some fucked up plan, and Jinu wasn't either. Were demons forced? Did they want to take souls? Were all of them in this state or …?

That was too many questions. Rumi oh Rumi.
Those were the thoughts of Mira.

Zoey,

Zoey could only think of the fact that she had stabbed her friend. How the blood came out. Rumi’s shocked face, her tears running through her pulsing patterns and how she ran. Hand covering her wound.

That scene replayed in her mind countless times. All her fault, how could she, her own friend. She made her bleed. How could she? What kind of monste–.

“Zoey, are you okay?” Mira’s soft hand was placed on her shoulder, even Celine was looking at her with worry.

“We should eat something.” one of them said.
It was true they hadn't eaten since,

since before the performance.

The order came fast and the table was quickly set. But Zoey couldn't taste anything, she chewed and swallowed, repeatedly, until her plate was empty, no one spoke during.

“We need to find her.” Mira said.

“We need to make the hunmoon stronger.” Celine answered.

Mira, growing a tad bit furious, replied “we’ll do both.”
—--

She hadn't spoken since the fight. And she couldn't find her voice to do so, Mira and Celine had noticed but hadn't said anything.

Zoey had never felt like this before. She was a monster; she felt like one. She couldn't sleep. Her body was exhausted, pained and bruised from the battle; her heart ached. She twisted and turned but it was an impossible mission,

She eventually gave up and went to the living room, expecting to be alone and to watch some TV.

But Mira was there,

she couldn't sleep either then.

Zoey sat next to her and looked at the TV. Some k-drama played (business something) . It didn't matter, it made noise so.

She didn't know what happened but at some point she started to weep. Tears once again coming out of her tiered, horrified eyes. Mira cried too. They hugged and cried and cried and cried.

“It's not your fault.” Mira’s voice cut through her weak breaths.

“I'm a monster.” Was all Zoey could get out. And even then Mira had to concentrate to hear.

She shook her head to her statement. And background noise filled the air once more.

“We'll fix this, it'll be ok.” Said Mira though she wasn't sure. But right now she was all Zoey had, so she had to be, because after all Zoey was all Mira had too.

And Celine perhaps could help.

“We'll find Rumi, we'll apologise, beg if we have to.”

What else could they do?

Where did Rumi go?

Chapter 3: Promise?

Chapter Text

The hunmoon was weaker than ever before and demons didn't seem to take a vacation.

A few days had passed and the new trio were getting restless, tired. Between looking for her, and fighting for their lives, let's just say it wasn't going well.

Every night they would be up, trying to make sense of things and every day they would try to survive with their exhaustion.

And so they forgot a very important detail. The public. Heck they had forgotten about Bobby.

Yes. The fans were confused and now due to no answers from their idols, there were a lot of controversies.

The huntrix break up on stage was the most discussed one.

Many criticised Mira and Zoey for what they did to Rumi, how rude it was, how hurtful it must have felt.

Others thought Rumi must have done something despicable behind the scenes. That there must have been a reason. That Mira and Zoey wouldn't just do such things for no reason.

And so the two sides fought aggressively, defending their biases. The internet was a rampage, a war zone when it came to the topic of the girls.

Another thing was the Saja Boys and the incident of their concert, the fire. How they had disappeared, how no one knew what happened that night.

Anyone who went there seemed to have a different story. But one thing was for sure. There had been a huge fire, and some people had gone missing, perhaps died because of it.

The investigations led nowhere, because how could you understand something demonic? When no such things exist.

The Saja boys’ disappearance is what had caused another type of chaos.

No one blamed them though. It was believed that it must have been a technical issue. Those special effects were a bit over the top after all. But that didn't explain the boys’ silence.

Where were they? Were they okay? Was this their fault?

Then a post from their account. An apology for the tragic accident that took place at the night of the concert. An apology to the families that lost their loved ones. An explanation of why they couldn't say anything about it till now.

People mourned the two major events. The fact that they had happened on the same day, made everything worse.

And now,

people were still waiting for some sort of explanation from huntrix.
—----

Bobby called Rumi, no answer,

He called Zoey, no answer,

Called Mira, no answer,

Called Celine, no answer.

He called and called.

No.
Answer.

So he rushed to the huntrix penthouse. Used his key to get in. Looked desperately for faces he knew.

All three of them were in the living room, quiet. Too quiet. Heads turned with hope that maybe Rumi had came back, that maybe it was okay now but when they realised who had come, the fragile hope turned to ash.

Still it was Bobby and they rushed for an embrace. No one said anything, another moment of silence. There were a lot of those now.

They couldn't tell him, too dangerous if he knew.

So they told him only half the truth.

That Rumi had gone missing, that they looked everywhere, that she didn't answer their calls.
That they were sorry.

So Bobby took the rains, he handled the internet as much as he could. Said that a big argument had occurred, between the girls and it reflected on stage. Said they were taking a break to settle things privately. Apologised for the confusion.

Neither Zoey or Mira or Celine had prepared for the backlash. They hadn't known the anger it had caused.

All three watched the breakup scene over and over.

Mira knew what had happened, she was there but she hadn't seen it, now looking at it, at Rumi's face petrified by a demon looking like her. Oh she was mad. She wanted to kill that little b****. Then she looked at Rumi again, and her patterns on her shoulders, how she covered them as fast as she could. It was still a surprise seeing them. Didn't know what to think of it. How could Celine not say anything, how could she let this happen? She was angry and sad and. How could Mira not notice? How could she have raised her weapon?

They were scared, they- the regret was eating her alive. She could only imagine how Zoey felt.

Zoey was falling. Falling to the hole in her chest. She watched it again and again. That video. That night. That day. She kept falling.

A couple of days passed. She looked at the mirror of the bathroom, determined.

She made a promise. A promise to fix this, a promise to apologise to beg if need be, to get her friend back, and even if Rumi didn't want to be friends with a monster like her, to at least say that she would regret that moment forever, she made a promise to never raise her weapon to her friends even if it killed her.

She would rather die than go through that again? Was that selfish?

Did it matter?

She would fix this.

No matter what it took.
—---
“Here we go again.” Said Zoey

Getting ready to fight these demons before they took any other soul away.

“They just won't stop,” Mira added, annoyed.

“Focus” said Celine.

The plan was simple: kill all but one.

Trap the said demon and get those questions answered.

It was what they had been doing ever since.

Celine swiped the leg of one from behind making the demon fall towards it's back

Mira came with her weapon and pushed it to its chest. A fog. Zoey threw her blades from far away. Hitting her marks at the faceless faces of the demons, three more down.

There were two left. They lunged for Mira, ganging up on her but they weren't very successful and one was killed by Celine.

The last one, they trapped it in a corner. Held its hands harshly and pushed them to the pavement. The demon looked up. It had no mouth, no eyes, no nose. But somehow it still made a sound. So they asked

“Where is she? Rumi?!”

It didn't respond

“Jinu, where is he?!”

Nothing.

“Answer me!” A bang.

The demon trembled. And pointed to a blue sign,

their heads turned to the colour.

Then back to the demon. They grew annoyed.

A noise came from the creature. “Tiger”

These demons didn't make sense.

But this was the first interview with an answer.

They killed it after. Sent it back to their realm.

What was this? What were they supposed to do with this?

Another wave washed over the hunmoon.

“Here. we. go. again.”

Chapter 4: Demon

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Rumi woke up in a dark place. The ground felt hard and dry, full of dirt. The sky, a dark red, almost black, no clouds, no stars. Her patterns were ironically her light source, glowing bright magenta.

Breathing felt awful. Lungs filled with acidic air. It made her cough, and gave her a chest congestion. Made her voice hoarse.

Everywhere she walked it looked the same. Like she was in a void. Then the sky made a wave?

Was that, the hunmoon?

If that's —----

She was in the demon realm. How?

Rumi tried to recall how she got here.

But her memories betrayed her, she saw their faces, petrified. Blood, running.

And as if on cue her body started to ache. The wound made a sharp pain. Like it remembered that it was there, that it needed to hurt.

She continued her walk to a random direction that she had picked, breathing got easier with time, her lungs adjusting to the thick texture of the air.

Was this all the demon realm was? Endless void?
Suppose she belonged there. Demon. How could this ever be fixed? Her patterns glowed with more strength now.

She could spot some trees, dry, dead? There were only a few, not much.

Every now and then the pain would dim and every now and then it would make her hiss.

She was getting tired.

Eyes.

Eyes were watching her.

Steps. She heard quiet steps trailing after her.

Her heart beat increased, breath quickened.

Someone was following.

She acted as though she didn't notice.

And they jumped her.

Rumi wasn't expecting multiple demons, sure. But years of training as a hunter, well instincts kicked in. She kicked and punched

Couldn't tell how many demons were there but she fought vigorously.

She made a move to summon her sword.

Nothing. That caused her to get hit.

Oh it hurt.

She tried again and again.

And at her fourth try it finally worked.

The demons were smoke right after. It took less than 10 seconds really.

Clap,
Clap clap clap.

She turned around, a demon girl stood in front of her.

Rumi raised her weapon ready to fight.

“Woah Woh wo”

The demon didn't move, arms raised. Usually they would always attack immediately.

“I'm not gonna attack,

trust me I learned my lesson from watching them.” She said, a bit of humour in her voice.

“Nice sword, where did you get it?”

Rumi went for the attack.

But the demon girl just teleported behind her.

“Do you talk?” She asked, offended.

Rumi did not answer.

As in disbelief the girl let out a quick huff, “seriously? That must be painful.”

She pointed to her wound.

“I can help you treat it.” She offered.

Could she trust her? It did need treatment. Could get infected or something but who was this demon?

“Who are you?” Asked Rumi, was that resentment, hope or fear in her voice, it was hard to tell.

“C’mon I'll show you around,” Said the girl with a smile on her face. “newbie.”

And walked away.

Rumi reluctantly followed the girl.

Trailing a few steps behind. Assessing.

She had blonde straight hair, deeply contrasting with the purple theme of demons. It reached her shoulders, cut straight. She wore all black, baggy pants, an oversized t-shirt. An oval face, symmetrical features and her eyes were, of course, golden. Her patterns too glowed.

They walked for what seemed like hours in silence. The blonde skipping and Rumi stiffly following.

More colours started to appear as they got closer to a town?

Rumi didn't know what she was expecting but it wasn't this. Demons just went on by, shopping, walking, talking?

Their smiles were creepy to see.

The girl turned around.

“My house is not far, I'll give you first aid.”

Why was she helping her? Why was she nice?

Last time she believed in something like this he had betrayed her, Hurt her.

Maybe it made her realise some things but…

Rumi didn't say anything and just continued to follow.

And to her word the girl treated her wound. Wrapped it up, good as new.

“So what's a hunter doing here?”

Rumi was taken back.

“You know who I am?”

“Not hard to figure out with that sword of yours. Though I thought they were blue, why’s yours pink?”

.
.
.

“I uh, guess I'm not a hunter anymore.”

She sounded so sad.

Everything was because of her patterns. Years of friendship gone because of her patterns.

They wanted to kill her.

The sadness was turning to rage. So Rumi stopped herself, better not to think about it.

“Why are you helping me?”

“We're not soulless, you know. Well, we are but metaphorically speaking. Technically Gwi-ma holds them, it's complicated.

.
.
.

Anyway we're not heartless.”

“Demons jumped on me. Today. No reason”

“You don't know anything do you?

There are many types of demons, those ones just love their territory, everyone hates them really.”

Wha-

“Want me to show you around?”

She was so enthusiastic.

And Rumi said

“Yes.”

Chapter Text

They walked through the town, silence once more,

Getting uncomfortable the demon girl decided to declare,

“I need to get some groceries so we'll just go to the shops that I'll be buying from.”

“Demons eat?” Was the answer she got. Did hunters not know anything? Or was this one just dumb?

“Yess.” She said, making a judging-face.
“How else do you think we have energy?”

Damn, she had forgotten how stupid newbies could be.

“Souls?” Rumi asked.

“Uh, wow, ok, so souls are Gwi-ma’s meal, kind of, we do get a bit energetic after taking them but they go to him, we still gotta eat you know.

How do you not know this? Hunter.”

“I'm not a Hunter.” That was quick.

She didn't know the girl would get offended,

“K” the demon replied, nonchalant.

“So how do you buy food then?”

“Well we have a currency, but really everyone steals from each other just don't get caught or you can beat them up and —--- what? It's normal around here, no one gives a shit.”

This girl was an idiot.

.

“Oh dear you're the only idiot here, got quiet real quick.” - her patterns flared - “just look at you hoping to make a friend? Show her how good it is here. Or I'll show you how bad it can get. How does that sound?”

.

She gulped. His voice dimmed, and Gwi-ma left. Show her how good it is?

Why?

What good even is there?

But alas. Gotta please the all mighty king.

Ahhh a pain went through her patterns like flame. He heard that. Heh.

Rumi after a while asked “You have currency?”
Ugh this girl, she needed to make a good show so she didn't show her annoyance.

“We use gold.

We get gold in exchange for souls.”

“That's why you collect?”

“Uh no, if we don't we get a little bit tortured,

maybe,

sooooo.

This is a system so we don't die of exhaustion. Haha.”

“I said show her how good it is here, not this!!!!”

Pain.

She had never seen this side of Gwi-ma before.

She quickly whispered “ok she is dumb but not that dumb. I can't tell this is sunshine and glitters when it's clearly not.”

“What?” Asked Rumi.

“I said everything is okay if you follow the rules.”

Why did Gwi-ma want this girl to feel welcome? She was a hunter. What the hell?

Whatever.

—-------

Rumi took a while to realise that this girl had not shared her name.

So she pushed and pushed until the demon couldn't take it anymore and said “just call me Daisy”

At least it wasn't something like, don't know, ‘Romance’.

Rumi laughed to herself.

It wasn't a, oh this is funny laugh, more so of disbelief.

Rumi looked around once more, vibrant was not a word that she'd use to describe the demon realm before, but now?

Demons were just trapped souls who lived on then, a demon was helping her, showing her around. And once Jinu had helped her too without even meaning to, which made it more meaningful. But then…

Rumi's thoughts drifted to the Idol awards, how He had arranged that, because of Gwi-ma? She didn't know what to think of it.

Thanks to him she had seen her ‘friends—-

They could have run away, be on guard, wait for an attack to defend but no…

They wanted to kill her,

Fine line between fear and loathing.

They hated her. Did they always hate her? She was a bit distant,

for good reason, clearly.

Oh just thinking about it made her boil, but Celine had been right.

They didn't understand.

A flame inside of her ignited.

From what she could tell demons weren't even that bad.

So all her life she was taught a lie? Her mother had fallen in love with a demon. That had to count for something. And she had fallen for Jinu.

Jinu, did he love her? Or was that a lie too?

“We're here” the demon next to her said.

It was a narrow shop, looked small but seemed to go on for a while once you entered. A really long rectangle. There were stacks of food from the human side, some new, some ancient, they didn't expire? Rows and rows of goods, from types of pasta, to rice to meat to chocolate. Demons did eat. Huh.

It felt cozy here in a weird way.

“K here's the plan I'll distract the shop keeper and you pick literally anything from here as much as you can carry and run to the direction we came from and wait for me at the photo booth next to the pub. Easy.”

The cozy feeling disappeared.

Daisy was just about to go when Rumi stopped her by holding her wrist.

“I'm not stealing!” She hissed.

“Look, it's a dog eat dog world here, you won't —-- others will walk over you if you don't walk over them.” she turned serious mid sentence.

Rumi didn't say anything for a few seconds, then,

“Don't you have gold.”

“ You think I'm poor?”

“Just do as I say!”

The demon yanked her wrist away and moved on.

Rumi was left standing there eyes wide. Should she? Ughhhhh, she grabbed the most random stuff,

And ran, she was good at running anyway.

—----

She waited in the photo booth for Daisy.

Why was she helping her steal? To be fair she had helped her too but.

There had to be a motive. Whatever, she would take what she could get, better than nothing.

Daisy came in laughing, giggly.

“That was fun, not bad.” She snuggled her shoulder. “Let's take a photo, remember your first heist” she winked, smiling.

Rumi did have fun?

She inserted a coin and came out with four pictures. Being an idol Rumi knew how to pose. Next to her the demon girl looked so silly, goofy, it made her laugh. But then she looked at herself, almost unrecognisable, patterns scattered all over her face, both eyes like snakes’ golden. Fangs. And she was too, purple themed.

She was truly a demon wasn't she? Her patterns flared once more.

Sending the distress Daisy let them out, and they continued walking.

How much time had passed, it was hard to tell here. There was no day or night. And demons rarely slept so everything was open 24/7.

But Rumi being a halfling grew tired, her eyes became heavy, steps sloppy and she fell asleep on someone's couch.

Perhaps the halfling could be her friend. She needed a friend. A sad smile appeared on Daisy’s face.

Chapter 6: Help Required

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

It had been two weeks.

TWO WEEKS!

And nothing. Life went on. At least the hate had died down a little.

No Rumi.

Celine had no right to be upset, she was at fault, and the sad thought was, they didn't have time to mourn.

Now that the hunmoon was reborn, they needed to fight twice as much.

She could read the two girls’ easily. Mira was trying so hard to be strong, and Zoey was getting better. When this was all new she hadn't talked much, and Celine could hear their nightly crying sessions with a movie or something. They were still wrecked but … at least they weren't reticent now.

She was never good with emotions, not good at comforting or sharing, not with Mi-yeong, not with Rumi. She didn't want to do any more damage, so she gave them space. She was certain they hated her anyway. She cried alone, a secret she’d never tell.

But they had to work. People were disappearing still. It had lessened slightly, not enough. The only good thing was that the Saja Boys stopped for some reason. She didn't even know why? She was supposed to damn it, she was horrible at everything wasn’t she?

Celine was isolating herself, her duty the only thing pushing her to go on.

So when another warning flashed,

An unenthusiastic “c’mon” was all that was said.

—----

The place they went to was a dark alleyway, straight from a horror movie. With the lighting and all, it being night helped the theme.

It was narrow, the brick buildings on both sides looked like it was made of some black material and trash lay on the floor. Little water puddles from the rain an hour ago had filled the uneven spots on the ground.

But, the trio had seen such horrors, the scenery didn't scare any of them. In fact, Zoey thought it looked like it was the scene from ‘Batman’, a Gotham alleyway. Yesterday's movie night was affecting her. A sad sigh escaped her lips.

Growling came from the darkness.

Right, they had a demon to fight.

They slowly walked into the alleyway. Weapons at hand. Still hopeful that maybe they'll learn about their friend. Each new day, they grew more and more worried. It was one thing that they had betrayed their friend and another knowing she was alone somewhere, trying to survive. Where did she sleep, what did she eat, how did she pay? Was she okay?

The demon growled again. Why wasn't it attacking already?

Celine led the two, putting her index on her lips. A signal to be quiet.

The growl was getting on their nerves, for it was deep, and poised, the only noise she could hear
It made them nervous, almost, no demon took this long to find.

Then they heard another noise, a flatter.

A bird flew on Celine's face. And she made a disgusted shrill noise throwing her hands up. The bird flew away,

And came back to sit on her head. Celine stood still. What the …?

The other two realised that the bird wore a hat?

Then it squawked. A piercing noise. Loud and disturbing.

And two more eyes popped out, on both sides of its face, Zoey gave a startled gasp and quickly covered her mouth.

The growl was louder now.

At their right,
At their left,
Front.
Everywhere.

Mira could feel her heart beating rapidly. The bird flew to the shadows.

Celine gave a sigh of relief. That was not a demon? Or? Even, she didn't know. Never had they seen, well, that. Maybe — ?

Then a blue paw stepped out of the corner. Followed by large orange eyes.

It was a tiger.

And it had a creepy ass smile.

One of them gulped.

Then a flashback suddenly hit Mira, with that demon weeks ago. Pointing to something blue, and it's broken voice “tiger”

Was this?
No

“Don't attack” she said “uhhh, but be on guard.”

Celine really tried to remember.

And after a solid sixty seconds,

“These are spirits?”

She was still unsure.

Zoey was petting the large cat at this point. A purr escaping it.

A cough, to get noticed.

A man stepped out from behind the three.

Jinu.

 ___________________________________________________

Gwi-ma had summed them,

That's what Daisy had said. That they needed to go, or else.

Rumi didn't want to, it was bad enough she was hanging out here, a conversation with the demon king, yeah no thanks.

She argued, shouted tried to get out of it but,

The problem was she didn't know how to get out of here, didn't even know how she got here.

So far, it had been okay. Nothing had happened and she could defend herself if anyone attacked her, she was learning new things,

she was starting to feel better about herself - at least a bit, made a new friend

Never mind.

Everyone was dealing with their own business. Their own life, they didn't care that an ex-hunter was here. Until the order from their king. Little minions. Suddenly everything changed.

Heads turned to her, curious, judgy, intimidating.

If she refused to go, they would force her to. Drag her, beat her. A little preshow to convince her. And she was convinced.

See, as strong as Rumi was, she could not fight a whole army by herself. Let alone in their own turf. A place she was just getting to know.

So they prepared, she used her own two legs to walk, a privilege apparently, if you asked others. And walked towards the large stair throne thing.

From outside she looked stoic, unafraid, but she was trembling, many following behind to make sure she got there, so she didn't run away.

What did Gwi-ma want? What could she do?

She didn't want to become a minion.

There was also this other side of her, new and fresh; she wouldn't admit anything but she was a bit curious. Was he really a fire? That’s what she had been told.

But she had been told lies.

The idea seemed a little ridiculous.

She failed to make a plan to get out of this,

And when she realised she couldn't, her breaths quickened.

Maybe it wouldn't be that bad. Demons weren't that bad so Gwi-ma?

Her mask was faltering.

Surely he couldn't be, I mean he did eat souls and forced everyone to obey. But that's how most kings act right? Kind of like Celine.

She was failing to make herself feel better. She was shaking.

Whispers came from all around her. Making bets if she would die today. ohhhhh.

She gulped.

Dread washed all over. Her patterns flared.

She finally looked to her right, and saw that -

Daisy was absolutely scared to the core, breaths quick, her patterns glowing hard, she took strained breaths. Didn't say anything, just walked. Little did she know, someone (cough*Gwi-ma*cough) was talking to the demon next to her.

What had she gotten herself into? Just to not feel alone. Hah! This poor demon was caught up in it too now.

Welp if she died today, at least she lived an interesting life,

Yeah

That.

Okay.
She didn't want to die. Not like this.

Time couldn't have passed faster if it tried. Before they knew it the stairs were right in front. Pink lighting made the stone shimmer. The ones following stopped their tracks and bowed down. Took their place to watch the show.

She took a deep breath.

And step by step she started to climb. Everything was okay,

Everything

Was

Okay.

She kept repeating those words. The mantra did not comfort at all.

She heard a shriek, Daisy was pulled to the top, somehow.

She continued to climb.

She came to an abrupt stop the moment she reached the end.

He was indeed a fire, bright and big, luminous.

Pink.

Blazing heat washed over Rumi. Sweat started to form, lunges started to hurt slightly. Her demon-part was the only thing keeping her alive. There are a million ways to describe authority, fear being a huge factor for Gwi-ma. So it seemed.

Daisy had kneeled down. Shaking ever so slightly.

Rumi didn't. She wouldn't. Not to him.

And for a while there was silence. No demon dared to speak.

Then Gwi-ma ordered everyone else to go.

What?

One by one the demons disappeared until it was just the two of them. Daisy had given a quick glance before she left.

The fire turned to a man.

A pink flame as hair. Eyes the brightest shade of gold she ever saw. He looked 25 ish. But Rumi knew better. He probably was born in the beginning of time.

But his appearance didn't matter.

Fight or flight, right?

Rumi saw her chance. She summoned her sword.

Got ready to strike. Pointing it straight to his chest.

And

A hand stopped her, a tight grip showed her sword away. Clinging sounds echoed as it fell down the stairs.

Uh oh.

He was stronger than expected. Should have seen that coming.

Okay, fine.

But before she could get into a fighting stance, he hugged her.

A warm embrace.

His voice hit her ear “daughter”

And it kept ringing, she kept hearing

“daughter”
.

“daughter”
.

“daughter”

The hug did not seem to end.

Chapter Text

“We should talk.” was all Jinu said. They agreed to go to the penthouse, as to make it more private. Derpy and Sussie went down to the ground, once again surprising the hunters. Jinu followed them inside.

Their penthouse was big and bright, the ceiling was so high, they must have been hella rich. Jinu sat on the first chair he found. The tiger and bird appeared right next to him shortly after.

“What do you want?” asked Celine, venom in her voice, she always got to the point afterall. And Jinu could be here for very different reasons. The tension was on, they didn't know if they could trust him, he had worked against them, the whole thing with Rumi, then he helped them. Was he to blame?

“I … I came to apologise,” his voice was soft, hesitant but somehow calm “Is Rumi here?”

Did he - ?, he didn’t know. They didn't know who should tell, if they should.

“Rumi has been missing.” Said Celine. She sounded distant all of a sudden.

Jinu made an o with his mouth, nothing else came out. And after a while he confessed, “I said some — — terrible things the last time we had talked. I organised that show, … ”

But before he could continue, Mira cut him off. “You were the one behind that?!”

“Yes” he said, shameful.

.
.
.

Yep , Rumi’s friends did not like him.

Jinu, not being able to stand the looks, continued on, talking slowly and calmly “look I made a mistake, Gwi-ma can be ……….. Persuasive. Loud, I don't know. I'm not saying it's not my fault, just. Have you looked at where she could be?”

Did he just play the blame game?

“Of course we have, we checked everywhere! You think we wouldn't!” to say Mira was irritated would be an understatement. Who did this guy think he is?

“I’m not saying that, I was just asking –”

He was cut again.

This time by Zoey. “Could you help us find her?” she added a “please.”

Jinu had come here to make amends, he had betrayed another person he loved and this time he wanted, no needed to make things right both for Rumi and for himself, Gwi-ma’s influence had lessened substantially, ever since he had decided this, and helped Huntrix, maybe he would be gone forever once everything between them was fixed. They could be free.

So he gave a nod to her question.

The three in front of him looked at each other, a silent conversation passing between their eyes.

“If you are going to help us we should explain what happened,” replied Celine “I’m sure you know some bits but…” she gave a sigh,

Celine was confused, working with demons? Weren't they supposed to fight them? Could they even trust this guy? She made a 180.

“How do we know we can trust you?”

Jinu was speechless.
Really?

Really?

“We fought against Gwi-ma. DO you know how hard that is for someone like me? IF you still think I’m up to something, I don't even…” he wiped his face with his hand, not believing this “you’re the one who ASKED for Help.”

Right, he had a point. A small “Sorry.” escaped her lips, old habits, way of thinking was hard to let go.

At the end they told him, he listened, taking it all in.

Zoey kept staring at her hands, Mira off to the side and Celine just kept looking at Jinu.

Jinu would be mad at how they acted, but looking at them now he couldn't, they looked broken, devastated, and it wasn't as if he didn't play a part in this. As if he didn't have shame. How had Gwi-ma not gotten to them, he could not comprehend, they were strong.

So he nodded and shared his experiences with Rumi, how he had found out she was part-demon, how they met a couple of times, how she saw good in him, about his shame, patterns, how Gwi-ma twisted things, how he acted.

They knew now, he had shared his deepest parts. And waited to get scolded, to receive harsh words. But only a hand was placed on his shoulder. Instead of insults, he got an understanding smile. Warmth came to him all of a sudden. Derpy came and brushed its fur between the four people, asking to be pet, sharing this moment. Sussie just watched.

___________________________________________________________

Jinu went to the apartment he was staying after talking a bit more with the hunters, huh he could not believe he had attacked them before, multiple times.

They had decided that for now they would look together, for Rumi, while making a better plan, he had also offered the Saja Boys’ help.

.

Either way they needed a plan and needed to work together. Maybe everything would be okay. Maybe –

“Jinu.”

That voice. Jinu took a shaky breath.

“Jinu.”

What could he do? Uhhh, sing, hunters sang songs to fight demons right? Okay he could do this, just sing.

🎶
I can hear you but I won't

Some look for trouble while others don't

There's a thousand reasons I should go about my day

And ignore your whispers, which I wish would go away, oh

(Oh) oh (oh)

You're not a voice, you're just a ringing in my ear

And if I heard you, which I don't, I'm spoken for I fear

Everyone I've ever loved is here within these walls

I'm sorry, secret siren but I'm blocking out your calls

I’ve — 🎶
🎶

He heard a click. Baby came out of his room “are you singing ‘Frozen’?”

“NO” Jinu was Red.

Baby unimpressed, grabbed some snacks from the fridge and went back to his nest.

At least the voice was gone.

Notes:

The song is "Into the unknown" by the way in case some didn't know,

you can listen to it to hear the melody. If you want.

Chapter Text

Gwi-ma, her father, had arranged for them to sleep in his palace. Unknown to many the stairway throne was actually a way to cover up and protect the Palace grounds. There wasn't a lot allowed inside of the said building, the king preferred to be alone, so only two to three workers, maids and cleaners lived there. Up until the news of the princess’ arrival. There were always rumours on such scenarios, theories that demons loved to make or joke about. Now? No one said anything out of the ordinary, fear ever so present on the topic of what gossiping could do.

The building was cleaned top to bottom for that reason, Gwi-ma wanted this to be perfect. So the maids cleaned the sandstone walls of the long, looooong hallways, wiped the dust on the wooden furniture, and swept the ground. Every now and then pain washed over their bodies, a sign that Gwi-ma wasn't satisfied enough and so they reorganised the already organised rooms, and recleaned the clean.

They arranged for the princess her private bed-chamber close to the king’s, luxurious and grand. And gave a spare room for the demon she had brought with. Now all they were supposed to do was wait. Not making a peep, while the father and daughter talked.

___________________________________________

Rumi entered her room, eyes staring into space, dozed off. And she threw herself face first onto the purple silk sheets of the bed. Slowly by dragging herself, turned around and purposefully started to stare at the ceiling. Her mind was empty, blank, unable to come up with a single understandable thought. What was one supposed to think after that? After so many things thrown at you, truths that you don't want to face, lies you don't want to admit. Was she even there right now, was the real question. Was this real? It was too early for her to have an existential crisis, but here she was again breaking the rules. What was she supposed to do?

Her whole life she fought her own blood? Did Celine know? What was she to believe at this point?

All these questions, they were tiring. BUT she NEEDED to know. For so long she was an idiot, she didn't know a single thing about this side of things. An evil man wouldn't act that way, he had welcomed her, accepted her, when she had tried to kill him.

What was she supposed to think of that? What had her mother thought of him?

She let out an exasperated sigh. What had she done to be in this position?

As a hunter, she knew not to trust demons or Gwi-ma. They were evil, simple as that. But she wasn’t a hunter anymore. As a demon she learned that they were pained souls, trying to get on by. Now which one was more trustable? She spent her whole life believing the first argument, but she was proven wrong. If all hunters did was hurt the already pained… A memory flashed between her eyes. That night resurfacing once more. She was doing a good job avoiding this thought for the past few weeks, pushing it to the side the moment it came back. But should she have? Maybe her subconscious was trying to say something. That perhaps it wasn't the demons at fault, it was them, if they were so cruel to turn on their life long friend for some patterns. It made sense. It gave an explanation. It sparked resentment.

Rumi thought on this, still staring into nothing, for thirty minutes straight, and her anger only grew each second. All the sorrow, all the loneliness turned to bitter hatred to the ones she once called her friends (family). That moment playing over and over again. The hateful stares. Glowing weapons. Her tears hitting her flushed skin. Her blood spilling out. how her hands turned red trying to keep it in. Sharp pain. Patterns burning her alive. She couldn't even look at her.

Her eyes lingered beside her waist, that stupid anthem turned to mockery ringing in her mind.
(young Rumi’s voice singing)
🎶
We are hunters voices strong,
Slaying demons with our song,
Fix the world and make it right,
When darkness finally meets the light.
🎶
And her head spun to the side, waiting on that big fancy door up front.

She would set this straight, if they wanted a monster out of her so bad,

gotta give the people what they want.

Her eyes burned so much brighter now.

Chapter 9: Let's Go Out

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

Bobby had offered to take them out somewhere, these past few days hadn't been easy and he cared , he cared a lot and it broke his heart seeing his girls like this. It was the least he could do, since the search wasn't going well.

It was as if the girl had disappeared. There weren't even any photos on the internet. An idol like Rumi, how did she not manage to get caught in cameras? He didn't know. But right now he couldn't focus on Rumi, Mira and Zoey were suffering so he had invited their friends as well. When Bobby first saw the girls and the Saja Boys together he was surprised but they seemed to be getting along now so it was worth a shot. They were to go to one of the best restaurants in town. He had paid for the night so it would be just them. Maybe after they could take a walk around some parks. Walking had always helped him release some stress, ease his mind.

It was around six that he asked them to get ready for dinner. They agreed to meet in front of the penthouse and drive together to the spot. The restaurant he had picked was famous for its Gimpap and its various soups. Its navy double doors opened by a waiter on the other side pulling the gold coloured bars in the middle. One by one they entered the building nodding slightly to the workers as a form of greeting and giving a quick thanks.

“I’ll show you to your tables” said another waiter from behind with a large smile on his face after seeing his favourite idols. They moved to the back of the restaurant, moving past empty tables. Their table was one of those long ones reserved for large parties, and they had to admit it had a great view, seeing the city up close but far enough that they could spot multiple buildings. Bobby took his place at the very corner, Zoey sat next to him and before Mira could move to sit next to her Mystery took the chair as fast as a Greyhound. Mira could only take a large sharp breath to this action. So she moved to sit right across from Zoey. Smiling to himself, Romanse sat across from Bobby and in doing so next to Mira, Mira gave a little sigh, right, of course Abby had to sit right next to her as well. Was she blushing? NO, no nononnonoonnno this was strictly from being irritated by these demons. The others didn't seem to think so though. Jinu sat next to Mystery and taking the last seat Baby took the spot next to Abby. They had never been invited to such a place before so this was new. And Jinu hadn't dined with a company like this for over 400 years.

“I’ll be right back with the menus” , out went the waiter from before.

“So what have The Saja Boys been up to these past few weeks?” asked Bobby, it was good enough to start a conversation and he did want to know.

Jinu being their leader answered straight away “We have been taking a break, but in the meantime some of us have been jotting down ideas for new songs and what not, between that and looking for uhhh you know, Rumi.” his voice turning to a mumble at the end not allowing anyone else to hear. They had prepped this answer, for Bobby for the public, for anyone who did not know about the truth of things.

“Oh cool, as you know the girls are taking a break too.” added Bobby clearly wanting them to join in on the talk. Taking the hint. “Yeah” replied Zoey. But an awkward silence fell after that word. It was devoid of any energy.

The waiter came back with eight menus and handed them over, his coworker then poured some water on each of their cups asking “Any drinks you would like to start with?”

“No, thank you.” Replied Romance.
“I’ll have red wine, the best one you got.” said Mira, she needed some alcohol to get through this.
“In that case, a glass for me too” added Abby, cocky.
“How about we just order the bottle? We can share.” offered Jinu to the table. And after getting nods as confirmation. “Alright then, I’ll get our best wine.” the waitress left to fetch the bottle.

Eyes darted from types of food on the menu. From the starters to mains. Baby just looked at the deserts section. Most of them decided on ordering Doenjang soup or simply Kimchi Soup, and since this place’s Gimpap…

“Ready to order?” the waiter asked coming from behind the counter,

Each said what they wanted, and when it came to Baby, “I’ll have a soufflé."

“You don't want to order food first?” asked Bobby confused, and startled by his calm voice stating his wish.

“No.”

“You’re seriously just going to eat dessert?” Jinu asked, annoyed.

“Is that a problem?” asked Baby. Clearly irritated.

The waiter could only watch the slight chaos unfolding. Jinu just sighed and said “that’ll be all, thank you.” So the waiter nodded along “coming right up.”

Shortly after the waitress came with the wine. “Would you like to open it now or when your food has arrived.

“Now,” said Mira without hesitation “please.”

Zoey also poured a glass for herself. This was going to be a long night. How could they be sitting here when Rumi was out there somewhere by herself? How could they enjoy themselves in a fancy restaurant after what they did? After what she did? Mystery put his hand on top of hers. Pulling her out of her thoughts Zoey looked at him, her face getting a little pink, probably from the wine. Surely. Then she looked back to the table, pulling her hand away. Mystery pulled his back too. You couldn’t see his face well because of the hair but he also was red, he had not drank anything though.

“Any shows you’re into these days?” Bobby’s voice cut the silence once more.

“We LOVE ‘Business Proposal’ right Jinu?” asked Romance, clearly mentioning an inside joke among them. Jinu just pinched his nose at this.
“‘Business Proposal’? Was that the show we watched that night?” asked Zoey, half interested in the topic,

Mira noticing Zoey looking at her for an answer said “Yeah, I had just picked a random show from Netflix.”

“So you know it?” asked Abby. “Maybe we could watch it together sometime.”

What?

Not wanting to appear rude in front of Bobby, “yeah, maybe.” said Mira. She took another sip of her wine. “Make sure to invite me too.” quietly mumbled Romance. Another sip.

Their food finally arrived. Each started to dig in. It was in fact delicious. Bobby had picked a good place like always. Baby just devoured his soufflé. Every now and then they could feel the stares of the workers. Ahh it was expected, them being idols and all, but it was annoying from time to time, a quick look at them and they would snap their eyes elsewhere, whistling as if they did nothing wrong. A sigh escaped Baby’s lips. He was only doing this for his brothers, he had to remember that, the stares didn't mean anything, remember that Gwi-ma. Every now and then Baby would insult the fire guy in his mind just to test the limits. Was he really gone? The soufflé tasted so good.

The rest of the evening went similarly. Every now and then Bobby would ask some question, others would chime in until silence was met yet again, they would take another bite of their food and another sip of their drinks. And the cycle would repeat.

When it came to the bill, Bobby had already covered that part of the plan, giving his card before even sitting inside so that it would be automatically paid the moment they ordered. The girls of course had protested to this despicable act but what’s done was done.

The Saja boys left for their apartment not long after they stepped out of the restaurant. Giving their thanks to the kind manager of Huntrix. And of course to the lovely girls. Mystery, a shy wave to Zoey only, and both Abby and Romance having kissed Mira’s hands before she could react. Leaving the two in slight shock.

Bobby made sure to assess the Boys after this act.

The three then walked a bit, Bobby once again being the one breaking the silence that nestled within.

“Do you know why I arranged this tonight?”

“You’ve been hurting so much, and I know you’re worried for Rumi. I am too. I know it’s hard but what you’re doing it’s not healthy. You need to take care of yourselves too, mentally as well. Especially now. We’ll find her. But just don’t lose yourselves in the meantime. Okay?”

.
.
.

A sincere “thank you, Bobby,” flew in the air “for everything.”

A soft smile filled Bobby’s face.

Notes:

Bobby's back is hurting from carrying that conversation, worth it if you ask him :)

P.S
I just realised the 'hunmoon' was actually spelled 'honmoon',

but I'm too lazy to change it since they are scattered throughout the chapters

I'm going to continue writing it the wrong way guys, close enough.

Chapter 10: Okay

Chapter Text

Rumi didn't know where she was going, there were so many rooms, it was impossible to keep count, she just walked aggressively. She pushed passed empty hallways for what seemed like forever,

until she spotted a demon, looking at her like it got caught red handed. This one had black wolf cut hair. It reached her chest, held volume. She wore a black crop top shirt and high waisted pants, also black. What was it with demons and the colour black? Guess you can't match much with a purple body. They were left standing there. Both looking at each other waiting on the other to act.

“Uhh sorry” said Rumi looking away, embarrassed at how long that lasted. The demon’s patterns flashed a bright magenta and quickly dimmed. And instantly she was bowing down, “Your highness.” she said.

That was new, Rumi saw no such reaction before. It hit her that she was a princess now. What was she supposed to do now? Tell her to rise? The demon was still bowing. They stayed in that position for a moment. Perhaps if she asked a question she would stop? Rumi could just leave but that seemed so rude. So she resulted in the question, naturally.

“What’s your name?”

The demon rose at last.

“Hana, your highness." she said looking up to Rumi.

.
.
.

“Nice to meet you.” she replied.

“The pleasure is all mine, ma’am.” Her patterns flared once more and dimmed.

“May I be of any assistance?” she added.

Rumi didn’t answer, yet. It would be good to get directions around here. “Could you give me a tour?” Hana simply nodded and led the way, declaring names and such, as they passed along different places. There was this big dining area that caught Rumi’s eye, then a ballroom, Gwi-ma her father had parties here? Other than the few information given about the rooms, time was spent in silence as they walked along the stone building. Truth be told Hana couldn’t believe what was happening, suddenly they had a princess now, and she was a hunter.

They were sent to kill them, she was sent to kill them but never had succeeded. The hunters always won, this one beside her had slashed her in the shoulder, and right after stabbed her in her back, her sword coming out of her chest. Then she woke up here once again thanks to Gwi-ma, exhausted. Did she even remember her? Hana definitely remembered her. And now she was forced to play ‘friends’, for she was the princess. She kept the conversation to a minimum because of that reason. But there was also slight interest with the resentment towards the purple haired girl. She was a good fighter, looked strong, and cool. She was a good singer. That didn't change the fact that they were literal enemies not too long ago.

Then the princess started humming a song. She listened, it was fast paced. Hana gave a quick glance to see the girl's face. But she couldn’t read anything.

Rumi was good at controlling her face and body movements, years of practice to hide what she felt like inside, many idols did it but her hiding being a demon as well, she had done this non-stop, it was like second-nature now. And she could see that the demon giving her the tour was looking at her every now and then. Curious much. She continued humming that melody. Getting annoyed as the song progressed in her head. The girl’s staring got uncomfortable as well.

“You like music, Hana?” she asked. Her voice was calm.

Hana had thought she was sly but guess not. She had noticed she was looking at her. “Yes, ma’am.” she answered.

“Why do you keep calling me ma’am?” Rumi asked, turning around. It was making her feel old.

“You are royalty.” the girl stated.

“Right,” said Rumi, would it be appropriate if she allowed her to call her by her name? They had just met. Nah, whatever “just call me by my name, Rumi.” she finished, and gave a small smile as a peace offering.

The demon was taken back. But she didn’t say a thing. Just gave another nod. The hunter was kinder than she had expected. After fighting them for so long, it felt foreign. Not to mention the demon king was her father. One would think they were alike addressing other demons. Maybe it was because the girl was half demon? It felt nice.

Hana didn’t know what had happened but suddenly they were in full on convo. One minute they were talking about music, then dancing, cooking, and food.

Maybe she was like her father, she knew how to communicate. The demon got on guard once more, this was Gwi-ma’s daughter. That surely should not be taken lightly, not only that but the girl was once a hunter, a hunter who had killed her with no hesitation. Hana choked on air at the thought. Mesmerized and terrified.

Rumi turned around to the noise “You okay?”

“Yeah, yep, I’m fine” she smiled her way out of it.

What was her angle? What could she want?

“So, um we should do this again some other time.” said Rumi.

The demon was left speechless. A small “Sure.” was all she could muster.

“OH and I’d like you to meet somebody.” added Rumi enthusiastically.

O. kaaaay.

The tour ended where a certain blonde stayed. She knocked the wooden surface. One. Two. They entered the room. Where was she?

There was no one here.

“BOOO!!!!!”

Shouted Daisy from somewhere.

Rumi’s heart skipped a beat from the scare. Hana’s eyes were just wide staring at the blonde questionably, why would anyone do such a thing.

But the other demon just giggled, the giggle turned into a laugh, muttering “look at your faces.” She was cackling like crazy until a hand smacked her head. She stared at the black haired girl in surprise. Rumi just rolled her eyes,

sighed

and smiled.

Chapter 11: Replaced

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

She could do this, take the Jinu approach. Convince these guys to form a group and debut in less than a week, easy peasy, right?

At least they seemed to be getting along. That might be debatable but, oh well. They had potential to become idols, the faces, the bodies, voices. Was this using them? She was going to ask them, and if not she could try going solo but this option was much preferred. She was used to working in a team and had to admit if they ever fought it would be good to have numbers on her side. That thought was a sad truth, they saw her as a monster after all. It still hurt.

She had to talk to Gwi-ma, her father too, and ask for permission. Seemed fair, he was the king after all, plus she didn't know what would happen if she didn't tell, and Rumi didn't want to find out. Everyone seemed so frightful of him but …

How could she go about this?

Just ask? Just ask.

“Would you like to be in a k-pop group?”

Silence.

“To go uptown,” she didn’t want to add this part if she didn't have to but it was inevitable anyways “you’ll get to steal souls.”

Silence.

“I can teach you how to perform.”

The stares they were giving her were getting to her.

Their patterns flared, what did that mean? Did they not want to? Had she made them stressed?

__________

They were holding back pain, it felt like flame burning you from inside out, third degree. Did they have to? Singing and dancing? Pain flared once more. Ughh. A strained “sure” came out and their pain went away. Daddy’s girl. Gwi-ma liked to play dirty. Not much they could do.

“Do as she says” - in came his voice. A ripple went through the two demons.
__________

Rumi was beaming.

______________________________________________________

She was at the spot again, next to the tree, on the grass. A light breeze pushed her hair backwards. She always came here, just to check. Visit Mi-yeong.

The hunmoon was so much weaker now. Their efforts didn't do much. They needed a new song, a concert. They needed to get out of their so-called ‘break’. Asking this from the girls was going to be a burden. She knew this but she had to. They had to. She let out a deep breath.

Fell to her knees and stared at nothing. Her mind was overwhelmed anyway. The wind just kept hitting her face. She closed her eyes.

If she opened them would she see her friend again? Mi-yeong was always so compassionate. If she opened her eyes would Rumi be there, having fun with her friends? Small tears started to form. Would she be met with the past? Be happy?

Celine didn’t know what to do. Useless.

______________________________________________________

Mira listened to their songs, just to hear Rumi’s voice. It helped.

But she also wanted to see if there were any signs she missed, and there were a lot. She had always thought that those lyrics were for demons, but now…

Golden,

🎶
Waited so long to break these walls down
To wake up and feel like me
Put these patterns all in the past now
And finally live like the girl they all see

No more hiding, I'll be shining
Like I'm born to be

'Cause we are hunters, voices strong

And I know I believe
🎶

even Takedown.

🎶
Oh, you're the master of illusion
나를 속이려 하지마
Look at all the masses that you're foolin'
But they'll turn on you soon, so how?
How can you sleep or live with yourself?
A broken soul trapped in a nastiest shell
영혼없는 니 목숨을 귾으러 and watch you die
🎶

How had she missed this? SHE was good at reading people, how? So she was hurting for so long and Mira didn’t even know. “A broken soul trapped in a nastiest shell”, “Put these patterns all in the past now”, “to save your soulless life and watch you die”, “But they'll turn on you soon, so how?” Rumi thought those? That part was about her too? It broke her heart. And she thought she had problems.

The fact that they had sung this. No wonder Rumi didn’t like the song. It made her uncomfortable. It was cruel. If only they found out a different way. Now where was she? Was she — was she alive? The thought evoked fear. Celine had said she had asked her to kill her, so what if? No she couldn’t think like this, she was alive. She was somewhere. SHE WAS ALIVE.

She was alive. She wouldn’t. No. She was alive.

Change the subject. She ordered herself.

The smell of food was coming from the kitchen. Someone was cooking, Bobby? When did he come here? She walked towards the smell. But Bobby wasn’t there. It was Zoey and she was looking at her.

“Uhh you’re cooking?”

“Baking” she answered. “It’s a way to take my mind off of you know…” After a moment she added “would you like to help? I'm trying to make an apple tart.”

“Yeah” said Mira, “lets”

________________________________

“We need a rapper” said Hana, it was obvious, every k-pop group had a main rapper, Rumi doing both singing and this could be excessive, she could be the lead but they still needed a main. “We can’t rap, sooo.”

“Where are we going to find a rapper?” asked Daisy, filled with innocence.

Now that was a good question.

One they didn’t have an answer to.

“Any rapper friends you have? Or we could do auditions?” replied Rumi as some sort of solution.

That could work. Did they have any rapper friends? Not really most were too old. Born before it was invented and none of the demons they knew did it for fun.

“Auditions it is.” Hana said.

“okay , let's go.” said Daisy.

.
.
.

“I need to change” was all Rumi needed to say.

Chapter Text

Celine entered the apartment as a woman on a mission.

_________________________________________

They did need a new song. It was evident. So Zoey had started to write. But her heart wasn’t in it. Couldn’t give the same vibes. It was just … it didn’t seem right. The lyrics weren't working, she was writing about nonsense.

She sighed,

Scribbled out everything, broke the pencil and threw one part of it as hard as she could. It made a small click as it hit the ground.

Derpy drew near to her as to give comfort to the upset girl. She pet the tiger, a small smile appearing as time passed. But it started to disappear soon after.

She took a deep breath and started again, this time getting her thoughts out. It was raw.

She was getting emotional again.

Maybe she would hear it. Maybe she’d come back.

So she wrote, putting down ideas, on how it should be sung. Rap wouldn’t do. Vocals would… She closed the notebook. Someone had come in. Realising it was safe she opened it again.

It was a good draft, and needed some work. But it was there.

===

When Mystery had seen Zoey writing, he was intrigued. She always seemed sad nowadays, compared to before. Mystery knew the feeling well. He had felt it a lot before Gwi-ma, he wanted to do something but didn’t know what to say. What would even help? Maybe he could bring snacks.

“I can feel you staring.” her voice. He looked away. Walked away and grabbed chips and brought them as an offering.

“Thanks”

he gave a nod. Where was his voice? He really wanted to say something.

She continued writing. Mystery just watched.

“You’re not gonna steal my lyrics are you?” said Zoey, sarcastically.

“What are you writing?” was all he could get out, his heartbeat was rising.
“It’s for Rumi.” she said, getting serious now.

Right, the hunter everyone was worried about. Was he jealous? Heh.

“I’m sure it’ll be great,” he replied, “you always write well.”

She smiled, it made him happy. And they sat in comfortable silence. Zoey wrote things down, while Mystery watched and petted the tiger, and the magpie. Sussie liked him.

Time seemed to pass well for Mystery today.

_________________________________________

The auditions weren’t working, these demons were terrible. It made their ears bleed. They had looked into how many now? More than 500. Five HUNDRED. Rumi had to admit it was just luck she had already found two singers. The last few of the auditionees rapped their sample.

And.

Yep. Terrible.

How was there not a single person to do well?

She didn't have that much time to train them. She didn’t have time for a trainee.

Everyone had disappeared somewhere now that the session was over. Rumi just put her head on the table and gave a sigh.

“Let’s take a break, go for drinks?” suggested Daisy.

“K.” said Rumi. A break would help them since they had been doing this forever now. So they went for a walk down the streets of the town. Till they reached a pub. An Irish pub. The demon realm just kept surprising her. She had to remember they had been fully humans once. And not all were Korean. Of course they cared for this stuff. They entered, it was stuffy. A very wooden aesthetic. Like they were inside of a ship. The bartender served and demons paid. Actually paid. Was this the only thing they paid for? Booze. A snicker escaped her.

The trio sat down on a table, next to a stage-like thing. The food was okay, and drinks were okay as well. Rumi had better, to be honest but… Hana and Daisy were liking it so she didn’t say anything. She remembered when she, Zoey and Mira would do stuff like this, but then she remembered that day. Right.

When they got out of the pub it was,
nevermind they didn’t know what time it was here. Rumi wanted to say night time but she might have been wrong. As they walked around once more, they could hear music? No way, someone was rapping. A girl. They went towards the noise. She was good. Luck, it was definitely luck.

===

By this point of time, everyone knew that there was a princess now, with distinct purple braided hair. So when Aera saw the girl approach with two other demons by her side. She bowed fast. What was the princess doing here? Was she not allowed to perform in the streets now? She bit her tongue. It wouldn't be good if she spoke out of turn.

Rumi still wasn’t used to this type of greeting. Yes people bowed to show respect to her before, but never this long, never this low. And they didn’t seem to stop until she spoke.

“Hi.” was all she said and the demon before her rose. And waited for an explanation.

“You rap good.”

“Thanks” she raised an eyebrow. Skeptical of what would come next.

Rumi just decided to rip the bandage.

“Want to join my K-Pop group?”

.
.
.

“We need a rapper.” Hana added.

That was not what Aera was expecting. Be a rapper in a group, for the princess, for the ex-hunter? Ha ha. No.

She only did this to earn some gold anyway. Best way to answer,

A flat “No.”

The three in front of her stared at her, probably thinking this is not how it was supposed to go. Sucks for them.

Pain. Gwi-ma? Or the precious princess?

Ahhh it was starting to hurt. But she would not relent. She was not going to work for some hunter for their stupid passion project.

The heat increased. But she held still. The pain would go away in a while surely.

But then the purple haired girl started to sing. She was like a siren.

🎶
Right here, right now

I put the offer out

I don't wanna chase you down

I know you see it

You run with me

And I can cut you free

Out of the drudgery and walls you keep in

So trade that typical for something colorful

And if it's crazy, live a little crazy

You can play it sensible, a king of conventional

Or you can risk it all and see

Don't you wanna get away from the same old part you gotta play

'Cause I got what you need, so come with me and take the ride

It'll take you to the other side

'Cause you can do like you do

Or you can do like me

Stay in the cage, or you'll finally take the key

Oh, damn, suddenly you're free to fly

It'll take you to the other side
🎶

So she replied by singing too.

🎶
Okay, my friend, you want to cut me in

Well, I hate to tell you, but it just won't happen

So thanks, but no

I think I'm good to go

'Cause I quite enjoy the life you say I'm trapped in

Now I admire you, and that whole show you do

You're onto something, really it's something

But I live among the swells, and we don't pick up peanut shells

I'll have to leave that up to you

Don't you know that I'm okay with this uptown part I get to play

'Cause I got what I need and I don't want to take the ride

I don't need to see the other side

So go and do like you do

I'm good to do like me

Ain't in a cage, so I don't need to take the key

Oh, damn, can't you see I'm doing fine

I don't need to see the other side
🎶

But Rumi didn’t give up.

🎶
Now is this really how you like to spend your days?

Whiskey and misery, and parties and plays
🎶

🎶
If I were mixed up with you, I'd be the talk of the town

Disgraced and disowned, another one of the clowns
🎶

Aera gestured to the two demons standing behind Rumi.

🎶
But you would finally live a little, finally laugh a little

Just let me give you the freedom to dream

And it'll wake you up and cure your aching

Take your walls and start 'em breaking

Now that's a deal that seems worth taking

But I guess I'll leave that up to you
🎶

That did sound good. To cure her aching.

🎶
Well, it's intriguing, but to go would cost me greatly

So what percentage of the show would I be taking?
🎶

Still needed money.

🎶
Well, fair enough, you'd want a piece of all the action

I'd give you seven, we could shake and make it happen
🎶

🎶
I wasn't born this morning, eighteen would be just fine

🎶

Why not just go ahead and ask for nickels on the dime?
🎶

“Fifteen”

“I'd do eight”

“Twelve”

“Maybe nine”

“Ten”

They sang together now.

🎶
Don't you wanna get away to a whole new part you're gonna play

'Cause I got what you need, so come with me and take the ride

To the other side

So if you do like I do

So if you do like me

Forget the cage, 'cause we know how to make the key

Oh, damn, suddenly we're free to fly

We're going to the other side

So if you do like I do
(To the other side)

So if you do like me
(Going to the other side)

'Cause if we do we're going to the other side

We're going to the other side
🎶

Daisy watched in awe, how the hell did that just happen?

Hana rolled her eyes.

These guys were so dramatic.

Notes:

The song: "The Other Side" by Hugh Jackman and Zac Efron.

Notice how she called them 'clowns' and said she would be 'disgraced and disowned' if she joined them.
I don't think demons like Rumi much, still see a hunter infornt of them. And they shame the ones who join her, secretly of course. Tsc Tsc Tsc.

:))))))))))))))))))))

Thanks for all the kudos and comments so far.

Everyone got excited.

After a whole month since the fiasco,

Huntrix released a new song. Did this mean they were okay now? That the argument had been settled? The news gave people relief. It was another new single. And they couldn’t wait to hear it.

Press play. Press play! Press play!! Press play!!!

🎶
I've been thinking

That I got no idea what you're thinking

Are you happy? Are you sad?

Are you always gonna hate me for that night of the show?

When it ended, I kinda hoped that it'd be open-ended

But you never looked back

Well, I guess you can't hold on to something once you let it go

But I know a place where we can be us

I know it ain't real, but it's real enough

From sun going down to sun coming up

It's like you're here with me

Whenever I close my eyes

It's taking me back in time

Been drowning in dreams lately

Like it's 2019, maybe

Whenever I'm missing you

Call you up, but I can't get through

Don't know where you sleep lately

But I'll see you in my dreams, maybe

We can catch up, drive down our old street

If all that we were is all that we'll ever be

It's bittersweet

At least a girl can dream

I guess that I'm taking what I can get

'Cause I don't get nothing new from your friends

If you got the harder side of the break

Then why is it harder for me to take?

There's so much I might never get to say-ay

But I know a place where we can be us

I know it ain't real, but it's real enough

From sun going down to sun coming up

It's like you're here with me

Whenever I close my eyes

It's taking me back in time

Been drowning in dreams lately

Like it's 2019, maybe

Whenever I'm missing you

Call you up, but I can't get through

Don't know where you sleep lately

But I'll see you in my dreams, maybe

We can catch up, drive down our old street

If all that we were is all that we'll ever be

It's bittersweet

At least a girl can dream

I know it's only in my mind (Ooh)

Playin' three nights on the stereo

Like a movie scene, DiCaprio

Oh, I put my makeup on just to fall asleep (Ah)

It's like you're here with me

Whenever I close my eyes

It's taking me back in time

Been drowning in dreams lately

Like it's 2019, maybe

Whenever I'm missing you

Call you up, but I can't get through

Don't know where you sleep lately

But I'll see you in my dreams, maybe

We can catch up, drive down our old street

If all that we were is something we'll never be

It's bittersweet

Can we be friends at least?
🎶

But they only heard Zoey and Mira. Not Rumi. So it hadn’t been settled then. People listened again and again. The song made them cry. The break-up was true. The lyrics spoke to their souls nevertheless.

The hunmoon was strengthening.

===

They could only hope this worked. The hunmoon was getting stronger by the second. That part was working, at least.

The hunters watched in anticipation. Looking at their phones every now and then to see how it was doing. The Saja Boys had tweeted “love this” to boost its popularity, too, now that people knew they were friends.

If this reached Rumi too… if it was everywhere she would listen right?

That was the mindset they were in. At this point they just wanted to know if she was okay and all the other things came after. But none had heard a word from her still.

“Look, these things take time, let’s just go on a walk, get some fresh air.” Said Mira.

But before she could agree, a warning flashed like a wave. Some demons had passed the barrier.

Again.

Why did they have to be hunters?
__________________________________

The demons that alerted the hunmoon weren't them. They had worked too hard for this to make a stupid mistake like that. Zoey and Mira were fighting decoys.

Two more days before ‘C/neris’ debuted.

It would be good if she gave a tour to the girls. Besides, Seoul looked exactly like she remembered. That was something only she could say.

They had come to this side every now and then to take souls and what not but doing that they never had time to look around the changes, plus they only ever did that in the dead of night. Couldn’t see anything but your target. Considering that Hana hadn’t been back here for 100 years. Which wasn’t much admittedly compared to others. Daisy hadn’t been here for a literal millennia and Aera, 400 years. So they had missed a few years so what.?

Too shiny, everything was too shiny it hurt her eyes. And there were so many colours. Not that this wasn’t beautiful or anything but it was going to give her a head-ache. The blonde was not handling this well at all. Her eyes just kept winking simultaneously but it wasn’t helping.

Out of nowhere Hana handed her sunglasses. That helped, that helped a lot. Only after she was feeling better that she realised Hana handed her sunglasses. Didn’t she hate her? Daisy looked at her. But she had already walked off talking to Aera. Huh.

Rumi was taking them somewhere. It didn’t matter, all three were looking at everything in wonder. It was kind of similar to the demon realm’s towns, but bigger. SO much bigger. Woah. Just woah. No other way to explain.

_________________________

The first thing they did was get Rumi a facemask. She was famous here after all. AND she wanted her return to be a surprise for the hunters.

And what the princess wished the princess got. Calling her princess had kind of become a cute nickname of their leader. Since Rumi didn’t like being called that by them. The dark side was that it was true. Gwi-ma had made that very clear.

But for now the fire king wasn’t here.

That meant

That they could joke around.

They got three super, beautiful, state of the art, masterpiece,

plastic tiaras from the cheapest store ever. Now they were all princesses. Except her. Ha ha, take that.

.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.

Well at least they found it funny.

Rumi just rolled her eyes. Smiled at their attempt to make her mad, it just couldn't be seen because she was wearing a mask.

Moving on to more serious problems, they needed an apartment, if she used her debit card, it would be noticed. Bobby probably looked into that. She didn’t have cash with her. They could stay in a hotel for a while. Hotels were sworn to secrecy about their guests. That would work, she would say she can pay two days later. They’d trust her. That was the best plan she could come up with on the spot. How had they forgotten about this? UGH. So much for not making rookie mistakes.

She also needed a charger for her phone and phones for the group. She was going to have to manage all these now that they were here.

This was going to be harder than she thought.

_________________________

They had managed to get into a hotel, Rumi had asked for a charger which they had so graciously given her. A month had passed since the idol awards, that meant she had probably missed a lot of things, there wasn’t really any internet in the demon realm so…

In the meantime the girls were trying new things, which could only mean that this room was going to be a mess in a few minutes. They had gotten lots of snacks to munch on ready to feast. So many bags of Saeukkang, bottles of cola.

Rumi opened her phone, not being able to wait any longer. So many missed calls. K.

Huntrix had released a new song? ‘Dream’. So they had already moved on then. She puffed out air, Wow. Skip. Their stage break-up was trending, still. Next. Bobby had tweeted a response for the public. “To all the hunters out there, we would like to apologise for the incident of the idol awards, towards the beginning of the concert the girls had a big argument, this may have reflected on stage. To settle things Huntrix will take a break. We thank you for your understanding.” An argument. Guess you could call it that. Scroll.

Oh.

OH.

Rumi was left speechless. Was this some sick joke?

You see, she was staring at a particular picture. Of Huntrix and the Saja Boys.

Eating together.

Laughing together.

In some fancy ass restaurant.

.
.
.

HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa.

She started out right cackling. The others stared at her from across the room, clearly uncomfortable.

But she didn’t stop.

Notes:

Song: 'Dream' by LALISA.

///////

maybe they should have gotten a manager,

but Rumi just couldn't do that to Bobby.

2019 is when they first performed together in this universe.

Chapter 14: Scream Into a Pillow.

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

So , let her get this straight. THEY raised their weapons against her, tried to kill her, because SHE was a DEMON. And now they were out here having fun with DEMONS they had fought before. ‘love this.’ The Saja Boys had posted to Huntrix’ new song.

SO, to sum it up. They had — hahaha. OHHHHHHHHH. What? Replaced her with demons because she was a demon. OH yEaH thaT maDe Total sENse.

Now that’s golden.

AND Jinu. JINU. what the fuck was he doing? Playing them too?

Loose canon that boy, her father was right.

Ohhhhh she was going to make them pay. Wanted to rip their throats out.

One Day. ONE MORE DAY.

_______________________________________

After Rumi’s laughing session the three looked at each other all thinking the same thing, what the in the…?

Was she broken, looked at that rectangle toy of hers and just… uhh, probably better if they pretended nothing happened.

Daisy purposefully coughed, to draw the attention away. “Anything you guys want to do before we debut?” She put her hand beside her lips to block Rumi’s vision of it and quietly added to the others “could be our last free day.”

Of course Rumi heard this. She wasn’t really slick.

“I’m open to suggestions.” The princess replied.

What could they do?

It was Aera who spoke,

“Go to the cinema?”

“Sure, why not? Let's go.”

“You think they’d let us in if we paid in gold?” asked Hana.

“Worth a shot, but just so you know we could also always sneak in.” Daisy winked to Rumi.

“But just so you know,” Rumi repeated, “we have to practice the song one more time today.”

Daisy’s smirk disappeared as if by magic.

_______________________________

Those demons had taken a lot out of them. So the fact that they instantly crashed on the couch when they arrived home wasn’t surprising. They hadn’t even bothered with laying down right, just stayed there unmoving.

The Saja Boys had helped them fight this time,

There were so many…

The five boys were wrecked. Who knew being a hunter was hard? Abby’s abs weren’t feeling right. Gwi-ma must have been suuuupeeer mad at them if he sent that many. It hurt. Every part of his body was aching.

How did Mira do this every single day, he had a new found fear of the girl now. After seeing that session, you’d be an idiot if not. But it was kind of hot. Would do this again.

He looked at his patterns. They were growing smaller by the minute. Was he not ashamed anymore? His eyes faltered. He would never forget that day. Never. His patterns flickered a bright magenta. He covered it up. Scared to the core now.

Jinu had told them to hum a song if this ever happened. So he hummed, he hummed his heart out. Hmmmm hmmmm hmmmmmmmmmmm hmm.

“Would you please stop.” Celine let out.

Okay, his singing wasn’t that bad! He angrily mumbled out some words to show his annoyance. She just gave him a death glare. Had to admit this lady was scary too. He didn’t care though, just rolled his eyes in her direction.

Celine didn’t have time for this nonsense. They needed a better plan or

Or just accept that she was gone.

It couldn’t go on like this.

She couldn’t keep filling in for the third hunter. It was tiring and her older body couldn’t take it as well as the others.

But it could take years to find a replacement for a hunter

Not mentioning training them.

And what would the girls think? They’d say no. Go on about how they couldn't do that to Rumi too, that they would rather be a duo. She knew they wouldn’t agree.

But their temporary solutions weren’t working,

The only reason they had survived that ton of demons was thanks to the Boys and that was barely surviving another day.

Maybe it was time they did what she proposed.

After five to six hours of sleep Zoey woke up. She fluttered her eyes. And screeched.

Now that woke whomever was still asleep.

Her features were reddened. For what she had woken up to was a face, up close. Mystery’s face. For once, hair not covering his blue eyes. THAT didn’t matter. Why was he so close? Her heart beat was over the top unhealthy right now.

And while she was trying to settle it down, Mystery went straight to an apology spree. He shouldn’t have done that, he shouldn’t have done that,

Shouldn’t.

Have.

Done.

That.

Bad Boy, BAD BOY!

Mira gave him dirty looks, these demons knew no boundary. She then possessively hugged her friend, took her somewhere far away from the creep, while still giving him distasteful side eyes.

“You okay?” she asked Zoey.

“Yeah.”

Zoey was still red. She didn’t need to compare it to anything else, just imagined she must be the most saturated colour of red.

“Seriously I’m fine M.” she smiled.

Her face was betraying her.

Mira definitely didn’t believe her, Zoey was a terrible liar. She had better look out for the mop hair now. What a wretch.

“I know that look, Mira, do not! Look he apologised, pretty sure he still is. I’m okay.”

Fine, but any wrong move and she was killing that demon.

“Plus, I can take care of myself.” added Zoey still trying to convince her to not lash out. It was nerve racking being the one de-escalating the situation.

“Go back to sleep?” She offered Mira. The pink haired girl did have visible eye bags from working overtime.

“Yeah, probably should.” Mira’s voice had turned back to the classic non-chalant tone.

So they did,

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

.

Except Zoey couldn’t now. No way after something like that anyone could sleep. She kept thinking about his face, her face getting red again. He had the most beautiful eyes.

She had to control her thoughts, right now.

Tomorrow was a new day, for some reason she felt nervous for. One could only hope.

Notes:

uh oh I think she is a tad bit mad now. told you, damn that paparazzi for taking that photo.

on another note Mira filling her best friend duties :)

P.S.
I might not be able to post tomorrow, doing so many things today I don't know if I will have time to write, I'll try but will see. Just a heads up 😉

Chapter 15: Debut

Notes:

The song in this chapter is Playing with Fire by Blackpink. It would be better to watch their dance to it to imagine the show. Optional.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

At the time for breakfast Mira opened the tv for some well deserved background noise. She hated the silence of the morning, it just didn’t feel good.

The channel that came up was Mnet Countdown. Why not? She could listen to newbies sing. She moved on and got going on setting the table as it continued on playing. Black silhouettes filled the large screen one by one, introducing the members in a mysterious way. Once all four were complete the camera shot changed to a dark stage. Barely anything visible. The piano intro started playing, and the moment the hi-hat was hit loudly lights filled the room by the pink fire effects of the background. Allowing the audience to see the four clearly.

The ones watching from a different household then the Huntrix penthouse gasped the moment they made out just who was included in this debut. Not being able to believe their own eyes.

But Mira, oblivious to the visuals, had started eating already along with Zoey. Both being unaware of what the TV showed. The food smelled delicious. The soup tasted amazing. The warmth healing their throats.

It was when the new group started singing did she start to choke and turn her head, eyes agape and mouth open. Giving all her attention to it like her life depended on it.

Zoey having an almost identical reaction. Spitting out the Gyeran-guk she had drunk. They’d have to clean that up later now.

.
.
.

She was alive. - A large smile crept to her face.

That was Rumi.

🎶
우리 엄만 매일 내게 말했어

언제나 남자 조심하라고

사랑은 마치 불장난 같아서 다치니까 eh
🎶

Singing and dancing with others. - The smile lessened in size.

Their eyes flashed and went back to natural colours. - Then it disappeared.

Demons.

The black haired one picked up on where Rumi left off

🎶
엄마 말이 꼭 맞을지도 몰라

널 보면 내 맘이 뜨겁게 달아올라

두려움보단 널 향한 끌림이 더 크니까 eh
🎶

Then a blonde one, their voices were angelic.

Their choreography was like fire itself. They were Fire itself.

Rumi sang once more, giving a devilish stare to the camera. The other members soon then joined in. Everything was in sync.

They danced a bit more to the left track. Each shining their bright eyes now, as a form of effect. Like the saying, fire in [their] eyes. The four then took their last pose, Rumi ending up at the very front of the girls. Without turning her head gave one last look to the camera before the screen faded to black and their group name popped up on the screen. Large, and Bold.

C/neris
And underneath they had given the meaning,
Cineris: ashes; embers, spent love/hate

For everyone to see. TO analyse as they seemed fit. Which could go in very different directions.

The fandom had already started, really.

The channel moved on to a commercial break right after the screen faded to black again,

Now the only noise coming out was from the machine. Their food started getting cold. They didn’t mind it one bit, even the ads didn’t register. Zoey and Mira, having carried on with their staring, stood dumbfounded like fish out of water.

That had felt like a hug and a stab in the chest? to the back? at the same time. The beautiful voices ringed in everyone’s ears. That show was magical.

Rumi had replaced them.

She had disappeared for a whole month, and made a whole new group. Was she in the demon realm this whole time? Somewhere they couldn’t go. Had she heard their song?

But she was back. Her head kept repeating that as if she didn’t believe it yet.

And. and now she used her voice to do the opposite of what they used to do.

With dedication in her eyes…… Her yellow, glowing eyes. How she showed them to the world, with intent.

Tears appeared in her eyes. Happy that she was back, confused at what she was doing. What was going on? Did it matter, thank god she was okay.

The two hunters stared blankly at the TV, trying hard to sort everything out, and understand.

The hunmoon roared a bright pink. Big waves washed over coming from the channel’s station. Many kilometres away.

The two girls' loud breaths dimmed. Heart rates went back to normal as they looked at each other once more. Determined.

Then They Ran.

Ran as fast as they could

to finally see

their friend.

Chapter Text

Catching their breaths after almost an half an hour of sprinting, the two looked around. But by the time they got here to the studio where the performance was filmed, the place was empty. Staff were cleaning up the extra props and preparing for the next broadcast.

The few that noticed the two stars made a double take. Looked at others for confirmation, were they supposed to be here? How had they gotten in? The two didn't seem to wear tags, which you had to wear to be in the building.

Huh they had never seen celebrities break in before. It was for this reason that the security came, and walked towards the girls.

“I’m afraid you can’t be in here without checking in, I’ll have to escort you out.”

Mira and Zoey, seeing that Rumi wasn’t here, complied.

“Sorry, we just…” started Zoey “wanted to see our friend.”

“Well if you want to hang out here you still need to check in” said the security guard. Seeing their sad faces he added “I heard they will be in the show Play Games With Us tonight. Maybe you could talk to the host to sort something out.” The offer sparked a light bulb.

“We could ask Bobby to arrange for us to be in the show too” Mira whispered to Zoey. She gave a nod.

______________________________________

Rumi was smiling with content.

The media was in shambles, people couldn’t comprehend what had happened. And she was enjoying the chaos.

By their one song alone the hunmoon was damaged like never before with so, so, so many weak spots. Good.

It wasn’t fair that they imprisoned pained souls.

Oh she could just imagine their faces, this was just part one though. Rumi wasn’t going to stop until the hunmoon was gone forever. And saw their pathetic faces cry.

She hummed with satisfaction.

Were they copying the Saja Boys’ tactic? Yes. But better. Those boys couldn’t get the job done.

When she was finished with this, those girls were going to be Done, Done, Done.

______________________________________

When Bobby heard of Rumi’s appearance, he instantly tried to call her again. Which was rejected immediately. He left another message on top of the thousand unanswered ones from the month.Ghoasted.

Okay she could be busy. Let’s give her that.

He called again after an hour. Rejected again.

But before he could try one last time, Mira called.

She was speaking so fast, said Rumi was going to be in some show, wanted to join in and asked if he could arrange it. Uhhh that was a lot. He did need a way to talk to Rumi but a public showcase.

What would that look like? Would it affect Huntrix’s image?

He had many doubts about this but Mira had basically begged him.

He wasn't sure about this.

But at the end he listened to Mira.

Called the manager of Play Games With Us and kindly asked if it would be possible if Huntrix joined in, or if it was possible if they also had a session right after C/neris aired. This way they would have a way to communicate.

Now their manager was thrilled, Huntix and Rumi's new group meant views. Everyone was questioning what was going on. That meant money. But he nevertheless said they’d have to ask the girls if it would be okay, and see if there were any free sessions left. To arrange this without permission would be a breach to the contract after all. Said he’ll call later when he has info.

Bobby thanked him. And when the call ended, gave a big sigh.

What was going on with Rumi? She was not acting like herself. Whenever he called before she would be so punctual. And to be in a new group now? Without telling him? Their manager, her manager?

If Bobby didn’t care about the girl, she would be in a lot of trouble, any other manager would have threatened to do something if she didn’t act straight.

The problem was that he didn’t know what happened. Mira, Zoey and Celine said there was an argument and that she went missing. He didn’t want to push. The girls were barely surviving in Rumi’s absence. But they were keeping something from him.

And he was going to get to the bottom of this.

“Thank you Bobbyyyyy.”

Said both of the girls.

“See you later then.”

They hung up.

OK. This was their chance.

Don’t blow this up, Zoey kept telling herself. That day was still fresh in her mind, no doubt fresh in Rumi’s too. Do. Not. Mess This. The. Fuck. Up. Zoey. Her new lovely mantra.

They would go there, have a good time, apologise, talk it out.

Talk it out.

The four girls prepared for the show now. Stylists were putting makeup on them, touching up their hair, it kind of felt uncomfortable, never had they ever had dealt with something like this. They came so close to their faces sometimes.

Once they were finished looking at their faces through the Hollywood mirrors felt incredible. They looked beautiful, stunning, like real princesses. Wow. Was this how Rumi felt this whole time.

In another room two more were being prepared for the show.

“Five minutes!” came a voice from somewhere.

All of their hearts were beating crazy. Except one.

Who was oddly calm.

Rumi had one thing in her mind when she agreed to let the hunters join.

Let The Games Begin.

Chapter Text

“Today we’re going to play Random Play Dance.” Said one of the hosts the moment the camera started rolling.

“The girls will hear a song and if they know the dance they will come up and show their moves!” added the second host.

“Of course to make it more Fun, we made this into a competition. Separated into two groups, three in each.”

He showed to the right of him,

“Doggy Dogs!”

Then showed to the left,

“Kitty Cats!”

They bowed at the same time as a form of introduction

“You’ll be okay competing against each other right? We know some uhh issues occurred”

“Don’t worry, we’ll be fine.” calmly answered Rumi.

“Yeah, it’ll be a good bonding experience.” said Aera, looking at Mira and then Zoey.

The second host took the rains once again.

“Allright then, Any person from a team can dance, no need to be all three. The first team to come up takes the stage, the other can not intervene. If we do not notice any mistakes, the team will get a point, but if we do … “

“We shall hit the one who messed up with a toy hammer,” (lightly obviously)

Nervous laughter came from the girls as they took their seats.

Zoey was in Rumi’s team with another demon called Daisy. None had talked yet. Waiting for a song to pop up. She sneaked a peak to look at her face while biting her lip. A habit she had required ever since. Rumi sickeningly smiled, like nothing was wrong. And when she noticed her staring, she turned to her, smiling and flashed her eyes. Still not used to such actions, Zoey flinched slightly, it was so small, but it was all that Rumi needed as confirmation that they were scared of her.

Zoey also gave a smile right after, it was a bit strained though. She then glanced at Mira, who was not doing all that better. She was sitting in the middle of the two. Looking rather uncomfortable, the demons next to her were looking at her with a mix of mischief and hatred, with wide grins on their faces.

Mira was barely constraining herself from going attack mode on these demons. They were pushing her buttons so well, acting all seductive. Pulling her hair harshly without anyone noticing, digging their claws to her skin, enough to make it hurt. When no one saw. She couldn’t lash out. The camera didn’t see what was going on. No one noticed. It would appear as if she overreacted for being near the new group members. That’s why she settled on taking a deep breath and giving death glares to the two whenever she could.

The demons drew back, reminded of the pink haired’s wrath. but always seemed to find new ways to annoy her. And Mira’s glares lost their power with no action to back them up.

Why would Rumi make friends with such demons? - People? - NO. Demons.

Addressing them as demons in her head felt better.

“Alright, is everyone ready?” asked the host.

“3,

2,

1.

Let’s go.”

🎶
You have stolen my heart, oh, yeah

Never let it go, oh, oh, no
🎶

This was by Twice, c’mon she knew this, Mira jumped to the stage.

🎶
Never let it go, oh, oh, oh

Lightning straight to my heart, oh, yeah
🎶

Her team mates seeing her dancing with full energy then joined in, noticing the song and dance.

It was admirable how well they worked together, in sync and everything.

This of course annoyed the pink haired once more. Why were they so good?

🎶
I got all the feels for sure

Yeah, I got all the feels for ya, oh

Boy, I, boy, I, boy, I know
🎶

But thinking about this made her lose focus. She missed a step.

🎶
I know I got the feels

Boy, I, boy, I, boy, I know
🎶

“Wait wait wait wait,” the host shouted over, “I think I saw something there”

The song then played a bit more before being cut.

🎶
I know you feel it too (uh, uh)

Sway in the moonlight, dance in th- - -
🎶

Mira sheepishly smiled. Ha ha, was that a mistake?

“That was on purpose.” she said with full confidence.

“Oh yeah, should we check the footage,” asked the host, humour in his voice.

“Yep, you should, part of the choreo.” she added nonchalant.

But they weren’t buying it.

And the toy hammer was brought.

Accepting defeat, Mira took position, slightly bowed her head, and waited. The hammer came fast. She rubbed her head after.

The demons were snickering. But tried to keep in their laughter.

Only Zoey asked if she was alright. Truth be told it didn’t hurt much but had to give people a show so … But still. What did Rumi see in these girls to be their friend?

The next song started playing immediately

🎶
You could have anyone else you wanted to, I'm begging you

Hands off, Gabriela, Gabriela
🎶

This time it was Rumi who got up first,

She was perfect with the dance moves, hands twirling like crazy.

🎶
Hands off, Gabriela-la-la

Back off of my fella, Gabriela
🎶

Zoey also joined, taking her chance.

🎶
Back off, Gabriela-la-la

'Cause, ooh
🎶

And so did Daisy. Making sure to get in between Zoey and Rumi.

🎶
You could have anyone else you wanted to, I'm begging you (hey)

Hands off, Gabriela, Gabriela

Hands off, Gabriela-la-la, la-la-la-la

Skin amaretto, I b-- - -
🎶

They finished the dance as the song cut once more. Content in their faces. The two hosts were impressed. The rest of the evening went exactly like this. They played ‘Playing with Fire’ , ‘Golden’, ‘Strategy’ At one point, Rumi got hammered, then Hana, Mira once more and so did Daisy. It was entertaining to say the least, to the ones that watched, that is to say. Aera remaining the champion of dance.

Rumi loved watching her group mess with Mira and Zoey. They would look at her, asking for help or looking in confusion, as if they were idiots. Like they didn’t know why she was like this. She just gave them a wide smile.

It brought joy in a weird way. She was kind of ashamed to admit that fact.

But after what they had done to her, it was barely anything compared.

.
.
.

It hurt every time Rumi looked at them like that, full of resentment and loathing always attached with the fakest smile ever that no one paid any attention to. Their hearts broke each time she brushed them off like dirt. Her gaze filled with fire. Guess they deserved it but it still bruised. Would an apology fix this? Why was Rumi acting like this? SO so cold. Deliberately trying to hurt the Hunmoon. Something they, she had worked so hard to strengthen.

A man's voice cut Mira’s thoughts.

“In contrast to the image, the Doggy Dogs seemed quite innocent and it was so good to see their cute side,” said one of the hosts. Zoey's team smiled at this. All three acting their part perfectly.

“And since they were so cute and made the least mistakes they have succeeded in Random Play Dance.” the other finished.

“See you in next week's show with none other than — dun dun d dun dun (for dramatic effect) — Twice.”

Once the outro was complete everyone in unison said “BYEEEEEEEEEEE.” Some less energetic than others, trying hard to hide their discomfort. But managing to sound enthusiastic for the fans.

And the cameras finally cut.

Chapter 18: Talk?

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

The door was daunting. As she looked at it. It kept getting bigger and bigger. Her vision was getting slightly darker as time passed. She was getting nauseous. But she had to do this. Mira made a motion to knock on the door. But her hand froze before she could hit its wooden surface. She was scared of how this was going to go. But she had to. The door only got larger and larger in scale. It was like she couldn’t breathe, each puff of air she took wasn’t enough. Her heart hammered loudly from inside her.

Zoey was right behind her. Waiting for her to knock. Why was such an action so hard?

This was Rumi. Their friend. All they needed to do was talk. Sort things out. Surely it was possible. They understood why Rumi lied now, being kept in the dark had hurt but it made sense. Rumi would understand their side too. Then she’d stop attacking the Hunmoon, and that’d be all. All’s well that ends well.

The door kept mocking her, laughing at her. Calling her pathetic. Daring her, dissing her.

It just grew

Larger

and

Larger

She made the motion again. Raised her arm, letting her knuckles come closer. Took a breath. Pushed her hand.

But the door opened without her needing to touch the wood. The one trying to come out of the green room froze. The moment she saw the hunters her head tilted and an eyebrow raised. Sighed and moved to a defensive position. The hunters wanted to fight now, really? Where everyone could hear?

Not expecting the blonde to be the one on the other side, Mira and Zoey summoned their weapons on instinct, seeing the demon ready to fight.

But their fancy props created too much noise. Mira’s Gok-Do and Zoey’s Shin-kals made those shimmering effects used in fantasy movies as they came to life. Which only drew attention from inside the room.

No one moved, or spoke. Careful not to attract reactions. Like wolves getting ready for an ambush. Watching and assessing as to not make the prey run away. Faint heartbeats, and breaths, the only thing clearly heard. Eye to eye, they were looking at each other's souls.

Until a very distinct sound came from behind the two girls. That shimmering sound. The sound of air being pushed.

Mira could only see a low pink light reflected in the yellow eyes of the demons in front of her before she ducked. And turned around.

The sight managed to give her nightmares without the need of sleep.

Rumi, annoyed by the stupid noise that gave her away lunged at Mira once more, only to be blocked by the large moon sword, again and again. Her each strike got angrier, harsher, making the hunter barely able to keep her footing.

Many emotions flashed in her eyes, surprise, to hurt, to guilt, to irritation, to fear.

Rumi’s pink sword cut her in the arm. Pain came sharply. It felt like she was burning alive.

The mistake of showing emotion cost her dearly, she couldn’t afford to get distracted with feelings.

Rumi slashed to her right as she dived away to the other side. Jagged breaths came out of her mouth now.

But before she could catch up with her lungs Rumi raised her sword once more, it was coming right down at her and she used her Gok-Do as a barrier to keep that glowing pink away. Heat radiated off the weapon making her face sweat.

And they were left in a standoff, her biceps were starting to give away from Rumi’s strength.

That’s when she saw her face. Rumi wasn’t trying to hide anymore. Her bright yellow eyes shined, her sclera pitch black. Skin purple, patterns pulsing like veins. Her fangs showing alongside her white teeth. She looked entertained. She was enjoying this.

A shiver went down the pink haired girl. What had happened to her friend?

Still barely holding on.

Zoey wasn't doing better. They were too close to her face. Her punches fell weak against the demon’s strength. She was a long range fighter not that used this. Of course she had trained for this too … but three against one wasn’t fair. And there were no rules or ethics in war.

Managing to stand this long was an achievement itself. One no one gave a medal for.

Running along the corridors she got distance between them. Threw one blade. It hit one’s shoulder. The demon screamed from the pain and pure anger replaced her earlier demure look. She ran faster now catching up to the space buns.

She tried to use the environment for her advantage now. Threw decorative vases at the blonde demon, she gave a snarl as a response. Her creativity was draining, there was nothing else to use and she had run out of Shin-kals. It would take too much energy to summon new ones. She was already way too strained. Where was Mira? Better yet, where was she? She had run off somewhere but…

She didn’t notice the demon coming from behind.

The one with black hair dug her claws from behind her. Blood came out from the mark, she hissed from the torment.

And the one with bangs cornered her. They held her arms. Tight unmoving.

Zoey started acting like a wild animal. Kicking and throbbing. Shouting desperately for help. Till a clawed hand shut her up. It was no use, she was a trapped injured animal with fear in her eyes. No demon was this good at fighting. It was like they had trained for this moment non stop. Knew every mistake, and weak spot of the hunter.

She couldn’t look at their wide smiles, filled with satisfaction at finally being able to defeat a hunter, after all those years of getting beaten up and killed multiple times, endlessly. Made them feel proud.
Not having a way to get out of this one. Zoey closed her eyes, squishing her eyelids as hard as possible, and tilting her head to the side, waiting for the final blow.

Feeling the pain getting to her, draining her of energy.

Breaths slowing.

And blacking out.

Her eyes flustered open. How long had she been out? Clinging sounds ringed in her ear. Her head spinned. They weren’t holding her anymore. They weren’t here.

Her eyes disobeyed and closed once more. Her ears slightly picking up a familiar noise before they shut off as well.

___________________

When Jinu had heard of Rumi’s return, he didn’t know what to expect. Didn’t think it would be right for him to assume the worst. But why else would she be doing the exact same thing he had done.

Zoey and Mira had said that they were going to join her in Play Games With Us. But his mind was uneasy. Couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something off about the girl he once got to know.

And when the Hunmoon gave a distress signal, it only confirmed the feeling. The Saja Boys had all looked at the wave-like lines, that screamed for help.

___________________

Rumi was winning, Mira couldn’t stand it any longer. She laughed.

-How pathetic they were without her, useless. They had betrayed her and expected hugs did they?-

That thought was a mixture of her voice and her father’s,

It just fed her anger. Her strength.

She wanted to kill them.

She was so close.

But she was pushed off of the girl by another force.

She stumbled back, trying not to fall to the ground. And when she looked up, she saw him.

.
.
.

Jinu stood there stunned as he looked into Rumi’s eyes. He raised his hand giving a signal to wait, to not fight. To just take a break.

The other Saja Boys were dealing with the others. Keeping them busy, strained, tired. The fight was ruthless, but it was working.

Rumi was breathing heavily. -Unbelievable-.

“You’re a good guy now?” she asked, voice hoarse and threatening.

Jinu didn’t answer, just kept looking at her calmly, not making a move.

“Hah,” she laughed, “maybe you just hate me too…” she cooed.

“I don’t hate you.” he said, voice even.

Mira was able to watch the whole interaction now. Rumi and Jinu were circling each other. Keeping the exact distance between them.

Rumi rolled her eyes at his lies.

“Look, let's just talk. We–”

He was cut off

“Talk, what’s there to talk about? How those wretches tried to kill me,” she looked at Mira, who had wide eyes and tears on her face. “Or how you ruined everything I worked for…”

She looked at him now. He couldn’t give an answer, guilt blocked his mouth.

“Why are you even working with them? I thought you were Gwi-ma’s dog.”

Her patterns were pulsing again. Walking in circles and not getting anywhere annoyed her. And when she was met with silence again.

“Get out of my way Jinu.”

“No.”

“No?”

Jinu shook his head.

Mira spoke this time, the moment she was able to get out of her trance.

“We’re sorry, we’re so sorry Rumi. I was scared, I shouldn’t have – I … I shouldn’t have pointed it at you. You’re my friend, my sister.” she was crying “Please. I’m sorry.” Ugly crying, snot all over, eyes barely able to see. Knees on the ground, barely getting the words out.

Mira continued to sob for a while not being able to stop herself.

And at this…

Rumi faltered. Eyes turned brown with concern, blinked and yellow. It was hard to spot by anyone else but … Seeing Mira cry like that had -

She shook her head furiously.

-They’re lying, both of them.-

Her father’s voice held trust. HE had accepted her, taken care of her. They had tried to kill her, lied to her. “It was all a lie” Jinu’s voice ringed in her ear. It was only fair she did the same

-Everyone else betrays you-, s/he reminded herself.

An eye for an eye

She lunged for an attack again, at Jinu this time for he blocked the sobbing girl. But the other Saja Boys had come to his aid, being done with their part of the simple plan. Slowly walking towards her, They took baby steps.

She was cornered. Taking steps back only made her hit a wall. They were circling her. Leaving no space to move. She gritted her teeth and made a hissing sound, the exact reason why a cat would hiss.

Her eyes glowed once more, directed into the black haired’s soul this time, full of spite and hurt at once again being betrayed by the boy.

“Rumi, please listen…” he had said quietly.

But she didn’t hear. What was left of her was a puff of pink smoke. Gone in the blink of an eye.

Notes:

OK I know I said a talking scene but i had to make them fight, imagine your friend stabbed you would you hear them out, plus she has been fed so much, would you call it propaganda? by her father for a whole month, plus other demons. Rumi just wants to kill them now. In a way. She even teached her new group how to fight like a hunter c'mon.

But still I think this interaction helped the girls realise some things.

I just hope Zoey's okay?

And where the hell is Celine?

Chapter 19: Care

Chapter Text

Everything hurt. Oozing sensation came from her back. And as she tried to turn around Zoey let out a grunt. Even her vision was limited, blurring and focusing simultaneously. Wherever she was, no one else was here.

So she decided to close her eyes once more, in hopes that the pain would go away. But the unease her body felt didn’t let her sleep this time.

After what seemed like hours she gave up trying to drift off. Instead she made an attempt to get up, to fill the thirst in her dry tongue. Her throat was moments away from coughing her lungs out. She dragged her leg across the bed - her bed - shuffling past the heavy cotton duvet. Having to rest after such a small action, she settled in sitting on the edge. Her eyes were heavy, so so heavy.

He was going to kill those demons the second he saw them again. What he did yesterday wasn’t enough. They got away easy. The state he had found Zoey was disgusting to see. Horrifying. To think he had been on the path to do that too. If it wasn’t for Jinu -

The door of her room opened. It was great support for balance. She took in a large amount of air and let go of the knob. Took a few steps, arms wide. She could walk, but the boy nevertheless rushed to her side to help the girl. She could only give a small smile that disappeared instantly.

He took note that she didn’t speak. Not a word. Zoey was so talkative from the few weeks they got close.
Did she need something? Food? Water?

Mystery directed her to the white couch, slowly. Tap tap tap tap. Their steps echoed in the silent penthouse. And once she was sitting he ran to get water and some food, he slightly slipped on the polished granite and caught himself before he could fall.

Took a bottle from the fridge and tried to warm it up a bit with his hands. When he deemed it good enough he looked for a straw.

Open,
close,
open,
close. There were too many drawers here. Open, close, open, aha.

He pulled out one straw and dipped it into the bottle.

When he came back the sight made him freeze. Tears were slipping down Zoey’s round features. A small waterfall. But there was no voice yet again. His heart raced a bit now as he stood away for ten seconds, shouldn’t intrude.

Then Mystery slowly walked towards the girl, and offered the drink.

Zoey, noticing the deeply desired liquid, reached for the water. Took it as fast as she could and started to sip through the straw. It helped. It helped a lot. But unfortunately it didn’t erase the pain pulsing from her back, arms and legs. Everywhere.

Where was Mira, was she okay?

The realisation hit her and her eyes widened. She had separated, had left the girl alone. She frantically looked around the penthouse. Head turning side to side. But not spotting her friend.

Mystery was confused, what did she want? Another drink? Maybe he should have brought the soup. He could ask Abby to heat it up again while he was with Zoey.

“Is everything okay?” the words left before he could think.

Hearing Mystery speak the few times he did, she turned to him now. Saying one word. “Mira.”

Her worried, hoarse voice filled Mystery’s head. Broke his heart seeing her like this.

“She’s alright, just resting in her room. Probably asleep.” He replied immediately in order to reassure her.

Mira was awake. But she didn’t want to come out. Not after. Not ever.

For once she wanted to be left in the dark. Things were better when they didn’t know.
When she didn’t know.

The whole day had passed. Celine had come and treated her wounds. It wasn’t perfect but she could better move around, stretching did irritate some areas but… she got used to that by now.

This was all her fault really anyway.

Not being able to wait anymore she went to check up on the pink haired girl. Quietly knocked on the door.

A small muffled “come in” came from the other side.

She twisted the knob and pushed inside. Mira was sitting on the floor, knees close to her face, arms keeping her legs at bay. And she stared at the blank wall.

“You okay?” she asked Zoey.

“Am I okay? M you haven’t even come out to eat,” she replied and after a pause asked “what happened?” so quiet it couldn’t be heard, scared to hear the answer. But Mira knew how to read lips.

Fortunately for Zoey’s fears, Mira didn’t answer. Instead buried her head to her shoulder looking towards the opposite side of the other girl.

Zoey was about to say something but when she opened her mouth. The Hunmoon sent yet another distress signal. Screaming pain.

Now of all times. Some demons were breaching the world again.

At this, Mira raised her head again, this time looking at the pink waves. Her tired eyes gazed over the thin lines and closed sharply.

She took in air scrunching her nose, trying to keep the dam behind her eyes from breaking.

Then she pushed herself up, letting a small “c’mon” to guide the girl next to her, knowing Celine was likely waiting for them to come out and fight.

Chapter 20: My oh My

Chapter Text

Everyone had gathered, all standing staring into each other's faces.

“I think you know why I called you here,” said Celine.

Some heads tilted down, being reminded of -

“You saw what happened. In a single day so many souls were taken. Rumi ………………. has changed.” she completed. Again with that monotone voice.

The silence that followed was deafening. Sussie flew away, getting away from the tension. Even animals could not stand this.

“I think it’s time we accepted that. The Hunmoon is not good enough to keep up with this…

Distraction.”

“Distraction? Rumi is a distraction to you?!” Jinu was furious.

“No! I’m not saying that it’s just, we can’t just ignore the damage.” She defended herself “Don’t you see the Hunmoon? It’s as strong as a newborn.”

When no one answered she continued.

“Prey do tell, if you would have survived without the boys that day. She almost killed you! I’m sorry but the Rumi we knew is gone.” She looked at the two girls. Baffled features on their faces.

But Celine moved on “The amount of souls taken has tripled from when it was just the ‘Saja Boys’” she air quoted “which was bad enough as is.”

.
.
.

“You can’t not fight her.” she stated. “She’s gone. Rumi you knew is gone. And this Rumi needs to be dealt with.”

The two girls were confused. Any other demon did this, and they would have killed them already, or been on the hunt, not waiting around, hoping that they’d stop. No special treatment. But Rumi was once their leader, it didn’t make sense.

“You don’t know Gwi-ma,” declared Jinu “I do, we do,” he showed his team mates. “Who knows what shit he put in her head. You’re just going to give up?”

Celine couldn't look into his eyes.

“You raised her Celine.” added Romence.

The boys were talking over each other now. All directed at the mentor. They were once tricked too, they got another chance why couldn’t Rumi. Gwi-ma was – –.

Celine outright yelled to shut them up. “YOU THINK I DON’T KNOW!, I lost my friend to that FIRE! Fell in lOvE? That manipulative –” BUT once she realised, her hand covered her mouth to stop herself from talking.

“What?” Mira’s voice echoed everyone's thoughts.

“What do you mean?”

Celine made a nervous laugh.

“What do you mean?!”

“Gwi-ma is …” the realisation hit Jinu.

Oh god.

Rumi woke up in her bed. Who had tucked her in?

Her father sat next to her, checking on her. She got up in a sitting position to eye level with him.

Gwi-ma was looking at his daughter with worry. He hesitated but managed to put a supporting hand on Rumi’s face. Rumi leaned in at his touch. She had been in a fight out numbered and if he lost her –

“Are you alright?,” he spoke “What happened?” His tone was controlled and calmed, not wanting her to feel threatened.

Rumi looked at the ground ashamed. Not answering his question, for a while.

“Tell me.” he encouraged her.

“I was coming back, they pulled out their weapons, we fought.”

It was clear Rumi was upset about something, Gwi-ma just couldn’t figure it out.

“I had her. I was so close.” Rumi went on.

“Then what happened?”

“Jinu happened.” Rumi grabbed the silk sheet, and thrusted it away, making a motion to get up.

Now it made sense. Gwi-ma had lost control of those boys. And now they were hurting his daughter. He needed this to be handled then. They were a problem for both her and him.

“Don’t worry about that boy,” he said “you should rest,” he suggested.

Rumi turned around to face him.

“I, I don’t need rest.”

“Take it anyhow.”

The girl huffed. “I can FIGHT!”

A pink wave washed over the Hunmoon with her voice. Which delighted him but still.

“Rest!” his voice got more stern.

Noticing Rumi was silenced and looking at the side, he added “at least for a day or two.” and left. Leaving only a clicking sound of the door being closed.

Now Rumi was left alone. Great, they made her look like a fool in front of her father too. She flopped back to that luxurious bed of hers and screamed her lungs out.

She had faltered, had fallen for their lies again, to her fake tears.

“We’re sorry Rumi.” “We're sorry” she mocked them by raising her pitch. The idol awards came to her vision again. Then their recent meeting flashed forward. “I shouldn’t have pointed it at you. You’re my friend, my sister.”

That was what Mira had said, but that couldn’t be true. She knew they hated her, one look at her patterns and they had attacked. Rumi hated them, she hated them. She didn’t care. She didn’t.

_____________________________

“Let me try to talk to her,” Jinu offered. “She stopped for a minute when I came, I don’t know, let me try.”

Mira looked at the floor, Rumi’s face still vivid in her mind.

“Jinu? How does Gwi-ma control demons?” Zoey spoke.

Not expecting the girl to speak, he looked at her, really looked at her. It was like she was trying to decide something.

And because of the sensitive topic he turned serious “through our shame, anger, resentment, sadness. He exploits them. It’s a way of control for him.” he paused. “Sometimes he talks like a friend, or he can outright humiliate you, sometimes he doesn’t play pretend straight up abuses you. Depends on the demon.”

“And if you wake up, which eventually every demon realises this, he uses pain. Our patterns burn us from inside out. It’s torture. If you still don’t listen, he kills you permanently." said Romance.

“Of course no demon wants to die, even with all this. ‘Cause he always manages to leave the tiniest piece of hope or doubt something.” added Abby.

“He makes deals, sometimes even when you are a demon, an offer that is irresistible.” This time it was Mystery who spoke.

“Or he can remove your face, leaving you almost senseless. Blind. Deaf. Everything.” Finished Baby.

For a minute no one else spoke. The boys shivered at the reminder of the things they went through because of him. But Zoey’s voice pulled them out of their trance.

“So what would he do to his daughter?” The question: Would he care? was left unsaid.

_____________________________

The door of the sitting room opened. Rumi walked in while her father was there, drinking tea. Truth be told she was feeling lonely, and didn't want to be, not today. Her mind always spiralled when she was alone, giving her a headache, doubts creeped in when they shouldn't. It hurt. With him here, they all went away. With him she didn’t need to think. With him she had a purpose and with him she was loved.

Quietly she sat next to him, he didn’t say anything. They stared into the fireplace. It gave that enticing warmth Gwi-ma gave to humans. Rumi relaxed. Her mind calmed down. She then rested her head on his shoulder, still staring into the fire, her eyes burning gold with it.

Gwi-ma turned around and kissed her forehead, looking at her made him happy.

“I love you.” he said.

She hummed “I love you too, dad.”

Here she was safe. Here she was accepted.

Chapter Text

Zoey woke up early, bedridden she took small steps towards the glass windows. It was just her for now. M hadn’t awoken yet, still snoring. That meant she could drop the act. She was getting good at hiding, and pretending. Too good.

She locked herself in the room of marble, its walls of pristine black shone in a cataclysmic way, darkening the glass sliders up ahead. The glass reflected the white of the toilet not far away. But she paid no mind to those features. Only the sink blocked her way to the one thing she desired to see.

That mirror was the only truth she knew. The bathroom had become a private sanctuary for the past few weeks. She would look at herself for hours at end, while the early morning passed by the clock. Just staring at her eyes made her feel ill. Yet this strange ritual was the only thing that helped.

In just a few seconds

“Monster” her thoughts too demonic to be hers “how have you been?” voiced with venom, they asked as if starting a normal conversation. It wasn’t hard to agree with them, though, the mirror showed the truth afterall. “You’re too much you know, … and not enough”

“How can anyone stand you? You don’t belong anywhere.” She didn’t reply, so the voice settled in a different approach “see the blood in your hands?”

She looked down, her hands were crimson red. The liquid dripped to the floor marking the clean white. Her breath became hunched, eyes darted off fast to the metal lever. Water flushed hot red at the touch of her skin. Zoey scrubbed and scrubbed until her hands weren’t red from blood but irritation of skin. Relief was short lived unfortunately.

“It’s not gone foolish girl.” the voice hissed. And it was right, dripped and dripped but never did it die. “I can help you get rid of it.” it was offered.

But it always offered, never helped, made it worse.

When no reply came from the broken girl. The voice moved on quietly, “you should kill yourself,” it whispered in her ear this time sending shock waves to the girl “would fix everything” it lingered along. Zoey went to the next step of the day, that would half satisfy the voice to get away for the upcoming twenty-four hours.

She summoned one Shin-kal. Rolled up her t-shirts sleeve, And let the blue touch the skin.

Her shoulder ached once more as she hid a scream. Her reddened weapon disappeared to thin air as she clutched to the side panthing, left in the quiet.

It didn’t take long for her to adjust, could still feel the pain but it was manageable. Nothing compared to what she made Rumi go through. When she was able to control her breaths she covered up the marks, taking spare clothes out of the cabinet, one thing she made sure to prepare each day for this. Making the voice dimmed and gone proved that this was right, a form of repayment

Zoey unlocked the door. M was still asleep. She tiptoed her way back to her bed. Her socks helped cover her steps to the room. Closed the entrance.

For some time she just lay there. Going through that each day made her feel better. Made it even. Satisfied she went back to sleep.

But that odd oozing feeling never did get away from her.

Chapter 22: 🎯💘 Compilation Match on Archery Idol | ※ Huntr/x ※ Saja Boys ※

Notes:

(See the end of the chapter for notes.)

Chapter Text

“Through Idol Star Athletics Championships this sport has received a lot of love by many”

The tv roared with cheering as the screen showed various idols competing in the ISA Championships hit astonishing marks while light background music flared alive.

“The greatest showdown! This is a chance to turn the tables. Huntrix has shown great performance as they competed in the archery competition.”

The two girls waved coming into view with their black leather jackets, dressed for warfare.

“Like the .. Hungergames, yes the Hungergames” commented the host as he admired their stylistic choice.

“They are certainly giving a statement, but will it be enough to beat the Saja Boys?”

Just as he said their name, the five boys walked in, with the classic casual wear look. They waved to the fans as they started shouting crazy in love. Romance started making hearts out of thin air, and Abby casually flexed every muscle he could. The crowd went WILD.

The boys walked towards the girls, whoever won they would move on to the finals. Which meant they would be against C/neris. They had already secured their spot after beating Twice. They couldn’t let them win, too many souls were at risk. Unknown to literally everyone but the two competing right now, everything was planned, it would be the Saja Boys who won this match today, it would be them who fought against the demons.

Besides the people already loved them and with everything going on with the girls… Saja Boys were the only stable thing.

They took their place. To make things fair only two from the five would compete this round. Baby and Mystery.

It was a shame really Mystery had to brush his hair off his face for this. Another cheer went on as he did so. His blue eyes were now revealed to the world. He let out a loud breath, started humming.

“Woow, mesmerising. Eyes ice cold, Mystery is ready for the upcoming battle it seems.”

“Who will win?” The second host finished the other’s thoughts.

“Zoey is taking her spot, arrow at hand. Getting to position…”

Zoey took in a large breath, put her left foot forward feet shoulder length apart looking perpendicular to the target 145 metres away.

“It’s almost like she is having a staring contest with the circle.” laughed the host. “But if she doesn’t shoot soon… Huntrix may be disqualified.”

She raised her fingers beside her chin. Her left arm was hurting from this morning and the morning before that making it challenging to keep steady. Two fingers at the arrow. And shot as she released that breath.

The arrow soared through the air fast and thud.

.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.

“Uhh did anybody see where it went?”

“We are met with a surprising turn of events: the arrow shot by Zoey is lost, nowhere to be found. Where did it go?”

“Staff are checking the area, Zoey seems to be quite in shock. Anyone would be worried indeed.”

.
.

“OH here it is, somehow managed to shoot it behind the target well. Not a good start but all seems to be okay now.”

Relief washed over the girl.

“Now it’s time for Mystery’s turn. Let’s see if his ice blue eyes help him see or if it would have been better with the hair…”

“If you were trying to make a joke, that was terrible, But yes let’s see if he can see with those pretty eyes.”

Left foot forward, shoulder length apart, perpendicular.

He raised his right wrist to his face, left arm straight and steady. Pulled and release

“An eight, that is a good start for the Saja Boy’s. And mystery solved he can see.” The host looked at the other host “now that’s funny.”

The other simply sighed and smiled.

Mystery looked towards Zoey. Her face held a smile but her eyes, her eyes were panicked? What was going on?

Mira watched from behind, where she sat on the chairs they gave for the team members to sit. She knew they were planning on losing but maybe Zoey was doing a bit overkill? She took time with her stance but? Probably fine, Mira would do some shots well and some bad. After all previous rounds and previous years had given Huntrix a reputation, they had won so many times, if every one of their shots were zero points. That was not gonna be good.

Zoey once again taking her time shot the arrow this time hitting the edge but still not the target. This was bad. She was doing terribly, too terrible if that made sense. Her left arm hurt more and more, just five more and it would be Mira’s turn. Her eyes had started to fill with black dots. The leather made her hot. Why did they decide to wear this again? She took in another breath.

“She really likes taking her time this round. What happened? Quarter finals she was breezing through. Well at least not zeros. Is she alright?”

“Fans are starting to give support.”

“She seems to be okay, thanking everyone for their concern. Let’s move on to Mystery.”

Mystery took his stance slightly looking at Zoey before hitting the target, seriously what was going on?

“Oh that is a five, not too good compared to the first but the Saja Boys are still ahead so he is allowed to make mistakes.”

Zoey needed to do good this time, took her stance and imagined a demon as the target. But just as she released that demon turned to Rumi. The image flashed in front of her eyes, the night of the idol awards. The blood, her blood soaked weapon, rumi

“Did she! Did she just hit the camera!!! Talk about a 10! She hit the camera right in the middle of the target. See the footage disappear, woosh.”

Zoey looked at the red circle with wide eyes, breathing heavily. Oh god. Eyeswatered, for what everyone perceived to be happy tears, on a shocked face, started to stream down her features. To which she immediately wiped up with her hands, and put on that smile again.

“I think happiness took over there, let’s see how Mystery shall reply.”

Mystery looked at the girl next to her once more. Only a few meters away and he still could see those panicked eyes. What’s worse was that smile, he found out to be fake. It had looked so real all day.

Still they had a game to play so he raised his bow and arrow to point it straight, pulled hard, looking at the target this time and let go. The arrow went straight ahead, steady and composed, managed to hit its mark.

“A 10 as well ladies and gentlemen, looks like Mystery doesn’t want to lose.” the host replied enthusiastically. This match was going well, and seeing different sides of the idols well it was entertaining to say the least. “Saja Boys are really up to their game.”

“Back to Zoey now, will it be a 10 again or a zero, let’s see if it’s a Zero to Hero!!!”

Her head spun, she had managed to blink the image away but her breath was slightly hitched, her arm hurt like hell and that terrible ringing in her ear was increasing,

that voice -

Large breaths weren't enough; she just wanted to get this over and done with. She shot the arrow. Her stance was weak but at least it hit a five. In the target.

“Gotta say not looking good for Huntrix right now.”

“That is your opinion, we’ll see how this plays out. Everyone knows Huntrix can be wild.”

“Indeed, indeed.”

“But back to our favourite Mystery, will he get a 10 once more?”

The crowd roared as he once again took his stance. It was like they were chanting something but it was hard to tell. His heart beat ever so slightly ever so loudly as he let go of the string once more.

“And a 10. Mystery is amazing! Where did he learn to shoot so well?”

King Yi Sŏng-gye thought him.

“Now that’s a mystery.”

“It’s back to Zoey and whoah she shoots, that was fast”

“Not waiting anymore I see, uff but it misses the mark once more.”

“No that’s a hit, Can we replay that actually?”

The screen showed the arrow zoom and hit the spot just outside the five point mark,

“It is bad luck for Huntrix it looks like, for them to catch up Zoey has to do really well and Mystery really bad. And our silver archer doesn’t look like the type to quit easily.”

Wrist beside chin. Eyes at target, feet shoulder apart.

Deep breath.

“A seven!!!”
Cheers were so so loud.

“In case you don’t know, that puts the Saja Boys at 40 points. I repeat 40 points. Huntrix on the other hand only has 15 this round, nothing compared to the past. Now even if Zoey scores two 10s next it is five points short of the boys’ current count.”

“Only Mira has a chance now so we shall be switching partners now.”

“Please welcome, Miraaaaaaaa and Babyyyyyyy!!!

Mira stood up and walked towards the spot passing by Zoey. As their paths intersected, she looked at her friend, really looked at her. Zoey was on the verge of tears. Mira needed to fix this. So with the short time she had, she tried to lighten the mood.

“Good job, :) and the camera one even when losing you manage to impress” she whispered quickly, smiling. “You ok?” she looked at her with slight worry this time.

Zoey just gave her a smile, a very strained smile, and walked away. Mira had to move on and take her spot. Baby was waiting for her to come up and shoot.

She made a quick bow and

“Alright the main visual is ready to compete, let’s see if her archery skills are better than her dancing. It's a high bar to beat.”

“She takes position, very steady though her hair seems to get in the way.She should put it back. Unfortunately she can’t hear us so we can only hope.”

.
.
.

“And she does, that could have really affected the outcome. Alright she is ready to release and off the arrow goes ………….. And that is a five. It appears Huntrix is in a tough spot this time. Let’s see if Baby can match his brother.”

The blue haired boy took a large breath as his patterns started to slightly burn, hummed and hummed, but the pain remained persistent. He could do this, he could do this. He had watched Mystery in detail, analysed his moves on how he shot. If he copied the position it would be seen well. He could do this. So many eyes, so many eyes were watching. He pulled back, the flames in his arms were severe now. And release.

The arrow missed its mark hitting the ground right in front of the target, a zero. The pain subsided but his eyes went wide at the realisation.

“Looks like the maknaes are struggling today, both starting with zero, I don’t think he was expecting that look at those large eyes and open mouth.”

Mira looked at the boy, that was a fluke, okay, he would do better. He saw them practicing before he was amazing, the best archer next to Mystery that’s why they had picked them. The plan was still the same

Aim for a five, he’d shoot a seven, aim for anything more he'd shoot a 10. Those were the rules for their round. So she aimed for a seven in hopes he’d pick up the message and shoot.

Mira raised her bow, pulled the string to her cheek and let go.

“An 8! Just near the edge of seven, will Huntrix be making a comeback?!”

Welp time for a 10 Baby.

Baby focused hard and

.

.

.

.

.

.

Zero.

What the -? What is going on?

Mira just looked surprised at the boy. Now Saja boys were only two points ahead. She would have to miss

Ok make it convincing, how was Zoey so good at this? It took another skill to fake a loss and make it natural. Left foot forward, put it slightly askew, raise the bow slightly higher than should be, fingers next to cheek, don’t pull much. And let go.

The arrow flew up making a curve in the air this time instead of going straight like before, and fell right on the ground only 80 meters in.

“Did Mira feel bad, what was that?”

“Bad luck?”

“Let’s see how Baby Saja responds.”

If he shot a zero again it was going to look bad he had to do better. The eyes on him were getting bigger, no? He looked ahead. Burning, burning. He shot a five.

“Okay this may be the turning point for Baby Saja, first point of the round.”

Zoey had managed to calm down, while watching from behind. Mira was really not that good at controlling facial features from time to time and oh boy she could see the girl was irritated at the boy. With that incident and all. Maybe Baby was planning on getting all tens in the last three, four goes? That had to be it. At least this was taking her mind off of you know.

Mira was trying hard, very hard to not lash out. Believe it or not these two already had beef and now Baby was messing with him? THE heck? The world's at stake here! She may have had aggressively used her bow at that moment but at least it was a five.

Baby shot a Zero.

Bro.

Mira gave him a death glare, careful to do it quickly without picking much attention. Abby or Romance should have done this, what was going on?

“Well there seems to be some sort of tension there, Mira is catching up. If she manages to hit high points Huntrix may win.”

She shot again, left foot a bit off, Mira’s hands were stiff as she watched the arrow go. Five. Baby had to do well now, no more messing around.

“It is up to Baby to keep the Saja Boys ahead now, even a five would suffice, but Mira can be a good archer, if anything.”

He pulled, he targeted the ten, but his arm jerked last minute, patterns ablaze. Fear had long filled the boy’s heart, now you could see it in his eyes. If you looked hard, the brown was lighter, closer and closer to yellow as the game went on. If you looked closer you could see faint purple alongside his hands.

Heartbeat increased, and breaths hitch as he looked at the arrow fly away.

Zero.

Fortunately everyone was meters away. The details went unnoticed, the cameras didn’t pick up on his terrified eyes. His low points were blamed for his shocked face.

Out of all the eyes, looking. He felt her glare. Judging, disappointed, mocking. Mira threw daggers at him, all the time, he hated her. Now her glares helped burn his skin.

Mira looked at the blue haired boy with worry this time, he was scared and panicking. She could tell, but every time she tried to show that she was worried the boy jerked away as if burnt. What was going on, this wasn't a friendly rivalry anymore,

what was wrong?

But before they could move on,

Baby fainted.

.

.

.

One thing rang in his mind.

.
.
.

“Shouldn’t have tested the waters.” -

.
.
.

Gwi-ma.

Notes:

who knew Gwi-ma enjoyed archery?

this is based on the idol archery copetition in real life by the way, twice dressed up in black leather once, the hosts pointed out it was like the hunger games.

anyway. hope you enjoyed.

I have been making you wait for a while now so yeah.

---
p.s.

is baby going to become a spy?

:) thanks for reading.
