Chapter 1: Entry 001
Chapter Text
Hi, I’m Tails. This notebook started the night Sonic and Shadow decided to keep the link, after we all came home from GUN in Chapter 14, Sonic, in Deep Breaths.
They didn’t say much. Not to me, not to anyone. But they sat together for a long time, and I watched the way they moved. How Sonic shifted just slightly closer. How Shadow didn’t pull away. And when Sonic whispered, “We’ll figure it out,” Shadow didn’t say no. That’s how I knew. They’d made their decision.
They were going to live with the link that the Emeralds created between them unknowingly. Not as something forced on them, but as something they chose to protect.
That was the night I opened this notebook to study things like shared brainfreeze! Shadow was a little hesitant at first, but I think he’s okay with me doing this now.
I needed a way to track the resonance, the emotional echoes, the capsule behavior and energy spikes. But more than that, I needed a place to hold it. Not the science, not just the theories. The meaning.
The why.
Inside these pages, you’ll find:
- Design notes on the Chaos capsules
- Link reaction logs and resonance shifts
- Pain distance thresholds and soft radius readings
- Memory projection notes
- Field testing after the flood
- Quiet reflections (from all of us, even Shadow sometimes)
- Questions and answers, from anyone who wants to know what it feels like
This log isn’t official. It’s not for GUN. It’s not for data storage. It’s not even for the record.
It’s for us. For anyone trying to understand what it means to care so much that your energy ties to someone else’s heartbeat. For anyone who’s ever been scared of losing that connection and decided to stay anyway.
Sonic and Shadow said yes to the link. This is where we keep that yes safe.
You’re welcome to read and if you want to leave a question, go ahead. We’ll answer when we can!
Chapter Text
“While we wait for questions, here's a short breakdown of the link, straight from the field notes and capsule specs!”
Tails flips open the latest entry in the Chaos Link Log, scribbling little diagrams of capsule resonance fields beside his words as he explains.
✨ Core Structure:
-
It reflects their emotional and physical states, but it doesn’t know what’s going on around them. It can’t “detect danger”or “send messages” unless one of them is actually in danger and the other senses that. It’s a resonance that sends signals back and forth between them.
📏 Distance Limit:
-
They can't be more than 15 feet apart without causing link strain.
-
If Shadow teleports too far, it pulls. If Sonic speeds off without him, it pulls.
-
That strain doesn’t only hurt one of them; it can make the pain echo, especially if one of them is already injured or emotionally unstable.
🚫 External Awareness:
- The Chaos Link is entirely internal. It doesn’t sense the outside world.
-
I can’t feel it. Neither can Knuckles, Tom, or Maddie.
-
GUN knows about the link because Kyle was the first to figure it out (Deep Breaths Chapter 6, Fall)
- It doesn’t have a will of its own. It only moves like a current through them both.
🌙 Formation:
-
It started on the moon when they became Super and joined hands to stop the Eclipse Cannon.
-
The Chaos Emeralds reacted to their conversation about Maria, about Longclaw, about grief.
-
That resonance? It linked them before either of them even realized what was happening. It wasn’t a decision. It was a connection forged by the Emeralds in response to their emotional truth.
🌀 Shared Effects:
-
They can feel each other's pain. If one of them gets hit, the other might flinch.
- They can feel each other's emotions. Things like pain, exhaustion, panic, and also the good things like happiness, excitement and love.
-
Shadow’s been noticing sensations more clearly now because he feels safer, unlike his time at GUN. (Resonance Chapter 5, Current)
-
The link can’t be broken unless both of them agree to it.
💠 Memory Projection vs. Dreamsharing:
-
Memory Projection is awake. Intentional. Emotional. Requires trust. One opens the memory, the other receives it. They both feel it while the receiver has a full-body experience of the memory (Deep Breaths Chapter 12, Apart)
-
Dreamsharing happens while asleep. It’s subconscious. Softer, deeper, and just as realistic as real life. The link can still hum in that space and if they're in sync enough, they might meet. It doesn’t happen every time they fall asleep. (Deep Breaths Chapter 8, Down)
- Their dreamsharing space usually takes place in the same setting on a grassy mountaintop under the stars.
🔒 Necklace Safeguards:
-
Each Chaos Capsule is keyed to their unique Chaos signature via quills. Sonic has a black capsule with a red quill inside, and Shadow has a red capsule with a blue quill inside.
-
If anyone else tries to remove it, even gently—it zaps them.
Static surge, unpleasant jolt, like a rubber band snapping your nerves. -
It’s not a weapon. Just a safeguard. Designed to protect them and their autonomy.
🎯 Pain Management Function:
-
The capsules don’t prevent link strain, but they soften it.
-
If Sonic and Shadow start to drift too far (approaching the 15ft threshold), the capsules activate dampening fields—just enough to ease the symptoms.
-
It’s not perfect, and it doesn’t make the pain go away entirely…but it gives them time to get closer again.
“We have our first question!” I say, gesturing for Sonic, Shadow and Tails to come closer.
It’s late afternoon, and we’re in the same clearing where Sonic and Shadow tested how far they can be apart from each other with Tails.
The sun is out and clouds are strolling by calmly. It’s a perfectly warm and sunny day, just right for sitting on the grass and talking about the connection between Sonic and Shadow.
Sonic’s ears perk immediately, and his whole body lifts like he’s just heard someone shout his name from across the field. He leans in with a grin stretching wide across his face.
“Wait—for real?! What’d they say?”
Tails scrambles over from where he was sitting on the grass, tablet tucked under one arm and goggles sliding down his nose in excitement.
“Already? That was fast!” he says enthusiastically.
He nearly fumbles his stylus pulling it out, his hands trembling just enough to make him laugh at himself.
“Let me pull up my tablet, I want to see exactly how they phrased it! This is our first field entry!”
Shadow doesn’t rush Tails, but there’s a quiet shift in him—a subtle stilling of breath. He turns towards me and studies my expression for a second longer than he needs to.
Then, softly:
“What did they ask?”
Not because he’s impatient. Because he wants to hear it from you, the reader.
He wants to know what stirred curiosity. What sparked connection.
Because that’s the whole reason the notebook exists: to answer from a place only the three of them, and the readers, can reach.
lucidheart: Would their link work in a suppression field? Would the field have the same effects of the earlier version of the necklaces or would it be worse?
Tails leans all the way forward, excited as he reads the question aloud on his tablet screen. His eyes widen, pupils flicking back and forth with that quick-processing glint he always gets when a real theoretical puzzle lands in his hands.
“Suppression field interference with the link…” he murmurs, already spinning a stylus in his fingers. “Okay! Okay, okay! Here’s how I’d break it down!”
He opens a virtual schematic beside him midair above the grass, Chaos signature lines flaring to life in soft, pale red and blue. His tails swish in tempo behind him like he’s syncing to the pulse of the answer forming.
“So! The Chaos Link is internal, right? It exists between their individual Chaos signatures and forms a resonance tethered emotionally and spiritually, not magically or mechanically. That means a standard suppression field, which targets Chaos energy projection, shouldn’t block it completely.”
Sonic tilts his head.
“But it’d still hurt, wouldn’t it?”
Tails nods.
“Yes. Severance, no. That’s only possible if you and Shadow mutually choose to break the link, because the Emeralds respond to thoughts and wishes. No one else can break it. Suppression, yes. It would probably feel like the earliest version of the necklaces, and maybe worse because this is GUN we’re talking about. Before we fine-tuned the dampening limiters. Remember that?”
Shadow’s jaw ticks slightly, but he doesn’t look away.
“I remember the silence. The way the capsules reminded me too much of the suppression field.”
Tails quiets for a moment, then continues more gently.
“What I’d expect is partial signal collapse. The link would become distorted, like static in a radio channel. You’d still feel each other, but not clearly. Emotions might warp. Sensations would lag or spike at the wrong times. You’d both feel ‘off,’ ungrounded, like standing on a floor that doesn’t match gravity. We all know how that feels.”
Sonic scratches his ear, eyes narrowing as he remembers the London GUN base gravity floor.
“Would it pull us apart?” he asks cautiously. “More than if GUN pulled us apart physically, I mean.”
“A full Chaos suppression field could forcibly sever sensory feedback between you, triggering a backlash loop that might mimic what happened when Shadow was injured by the branch in the flood…”
Then his eyes turn gently back to you, the reader.
“Thank you for letting me answer that. I've actually been meaning to model a suppression-based scenario and now I get to log this question in the official Chaos Link Log!”
“Field Entry #002: Suppression Theory and Necklace Fail-safes.”
They’re all still watching you. Quietly now, but aware.
Aware that someone asked about them.
Someone wondered, cared, enough to imagine the worst…and trust that they'd endure it together.
Tails leans in closer to look at the next question.
Arya12: One thing i'm wondering about is if Shadow starts shutting Sonic out to certain emotions what will happen in the long run. Might impact the link negatively. The pain of bottled up emotions is that something that could hurt the other in a way. Maybe not feeling it right away but still as something is off at some point. Like a slumbering pain that comes pouring out once the one bottling up the emotions can't hold it back anymore. I wonder if that could cause them to feel sick. Maybe Sonic would start feeling ill after awhile because Shadow is bottling stuff up. The link might not be able to stop everything completely. The subconcious comes to mind. As Shadow does shut stuff out but in his dreams some stuff slips through as we have already seen.
His eyes become wider, the question reflected in them like starlight through glass.
“Whoa. That’s…a really good question.”
He doesn’t speak right away, just resting his pen against the notebook page. He lets the silence hold space for the weight of it. Shadow shifts slightly in the background, arms crossed a little tighter. Sonic doesn’t say anything either but his gaze softens, quiet with recognition.
Tails finally murmurs, “That sounds exactly like the kind of thing the link would pick up on…even if neither of them mean for it to.”
Tails’ Full Answer:
“Okay, so…if Shadow does start shutting Sonic out not deliberately, but through that kind of emotional suppression he tends to fall back on when things get too intense…then yeah, I think it would definitely affect the link. Not right away, maybe not in a way they can track in real time, but…”
Tails turns a page in his notebook, flipping past capsule sketches and resonance graphs until he finds an older diagram: the link drawn as a current of light between two Chaos signatures. He taps it gently with a gloved finger.
“The link isn't just active when they're talking or fighting or making decisions together. It lives in their subconscious too. It pulses under the surface, even when they're asleep or silent. So if Shadow starts bottling up something painful, especially if he tells himself not to let Sonic feel it, that pain doesn’t disappear. It just…gets pushed deeper. And the deeper it gets, the more quietly it distorts the resonance.”
He gestures with one hand, mimicking a ripple underwater. “Sonic might not notice anything at first. But little things would change. His energy might feel off-balance. His reactions might get a fraction slower. He might feel tired even after sleeping, or start experiencing mild nausea or headaches—physical symptoms with no obvious cause. Kind of like…his body trying to carry a weight it doesn’t remember picking up.”
Sonic and Shadow stay quiet, letting Tails continue his tangent.
“And you’re right. If it goes long enough without being addressed, then eventually…something would break. Not the link itself, not unless they really want that, but the pressure would burst through. Maybe during a dream. Maybe during a fight. Maybe in total silence.”
Tails’ voice softens.
“But the pain? That wouldn't be one-sided. Shadow would be hurting too—he just wouldn’t let himself feel it clearly until it leaked through the link, like a faultline cracking open from the inside.”
He exhales. “In short: the link doesn't stop pain. It just tries to share it. And if one side refuses to let that happen, the pressure builds anyway. Just…in the dark.”
Shadow’s voice, quiet but clear:
“…I thought if I held it in, I’d be protecting him. But I wasn’t. I was hiding from him.”
He doesn’t look up at first, just lets the words settle like coals.
“When I was hurt and refused to acknowledge it after our fight in the tent, he started feeling like he did something wrong. Like he was reaching out and I wasn’t there. That guilt is poison, and he blames himself even when he has no idea what for.”
Shadow’s fists clench slightly.
“He told me once that he feels calm when I’m nearby. But if I wall myself off…even if my body is close…he doesn’t feel that calm anymore.”
The silence lingers. Then he lifts his eyes, steady. “I don’t want to be a presence that makes him sick. I want to be someone he can breathe around.”
Sonic (rubbing the back of his neck, voice soft):
“Yeah. That’s the thing about the link. You can’t lie through it. Not forever. Not even to yourself.”
He shrugs a little, but his gaze is warm. “Shadow’s gotten better at sharing stuff. Not just the big world-ending things. The quiet stuff. Like when he doesn’t understand a joke, or when he’s scared he’s gonna mess something up and I’ll leave.”
Sonic pauses, then adds, “He used to hide everything in a locked box. But now…when something aches, I can feel him reach for the key. Even if he doesn’t open it right away.”
Then, more quietly: “If I started feeling sick again, for no reason…I’d know it wasn’t my pain. I’d know it was ours. I’d stay with him until we figured it out no matter how long it takes, and not just because I have to.”
Me: Sonic, you would never leave Shadow, right? Even if the link somehow did break?
His breath catches like wind meeting the edge of a cliff—held, trembling, searching for the next step down.
He’s sitting with one knee drawn up, arms wrapped loosely around it, but his body leans slightly forward, almost unconsciously like the question pulled him toward something he already knew.
Shadow doesn’t look at him. Not yet. But his head tilts slightly, listening.
The silence folds around them like dusk before a storm. Then Sonic speaks, not fast, not loud, just steady.
“…I wouldn’t.”
He swallows.
“I wouldn’t leave him. Not for anything. Not if the link shattered, not if I forgot my own name, not even if he tried to push me away on purpose. I’ve done enough running. I’ve done the whole keep-it-light, stay-on-the-move, don’t-get-too-close thing. It didn’t make anything better. It just made everything lonelier.”
His voice gets quieter.
“And then he showed up. Not like a lightning bolt—more like gravity. I didn’t know I needed him until I felt him. Until the link made everything stop for a second, and I could finally hear the stuff I was too fast to notice before. Like how scared I was. How tired. How much I didn’t want to be alone anymore.”
Shadow’s eyes flick to him now. But Sonic’s still looking at the grass, at the space between them, like he’s remembering something sacred.
“If we end up breaking the link…yeah, that would hurt. I think it’d feel like a limb going numb. Like I forgot how to breathe. But I’d stay.”
His hand presses lightly to his chest, then lifts, palm open, a silent echo of how it always feels when the link is steady between them.
“I’d stay because he’s not just a part of me because of Chaos. He’s a part of me because I chose him. And he chose me. The link didn’t start that—it just showed us what was already there.”
He finally turns, and his green eyes are gentle, unshaken.
“If we choose to break it, which is very unlikely, I’d still know him. I’d still recognize the way his voice sounds when he’s not trying to be strong. I’d still remember what it feels like when he’s standing behind me and everything inside me quiets down. I’d remind him of that every day until he believed it again.”
He offers a small, half-smile.
“I’m not goin’ anywhere. Even if I had to walk beside him with no resonance and no powers and no idea what tomorrow looks like. I’ll walk anyway.”
Shadow doesn’t speak, but something shifts in the way he breathes—like the ache in his chest just unclenched. His hand curls slightly at his side, like he’s holding that promise and doesn’t want to let go.
Tails (finishing the page, then looking up):
“So yeah…the reader was right. The link doesn’t override the subconscious. It works through it. And dreams are where it comes out the strongest when everything else is shut down. It’s why they’re more likely to dreamshare than use memory projection if something emotional is going on—because even if they don’t mean to, the link is looking for connection.”
Tails grins faintly.
“Which, uh…kind of makes it a nosy little thing. But a loyal one.”
Me: Sonic and Shadow, do you have anything to add?
Sonic’s quiet for a moment. Not because he doesn’t have something to say—but because Tails said so much of it right. And not just factually. He said it like he understood what it feels like, even if he’ll never feel it himself.
He sits back on his hands, legs stretched out in front of him, his eyes tilted toward the sky like he’s trying to catch the words before they float away.
“Yeah.”
He breathes once, then nods slowly.
“There’s one thing I wanna add.”
He looks down, not at Tails, not at you, but at Shadow. Steady and certain.
“The link isn’t a guarantee. It isn’t permanent unless we both want that. We can choose to break it at any time.”
His voice is softer now.
“Just because it’s there doesn’t mean we always get it right. It doesn’t mean we don’t mess up. It doesn’t mean we don’t hurt each other sometimes, even without meaning to.”
He picks up the edge of his Chaos capsule and rolls it lightly between his fingers.
“But that's the part that matters, I think. That it’s still here, even after all that. It’s not a shortcut. It’s something we build. Every day. With every choice. Every time we stay.”
He finally looks at Shadow then—eyes bright, no hesitation in them.
“And I’m not going anywhere.”
Shadow doesn’t move for a long time.
He stands still, arms folded loosely, head slightly down. He’s listening. Not just to what Sonic said, but to what it meant. The link thrums faintly between them—low, steady, almost inaudible—but there.
When he speaks, it’s without any attempt to soften it.
“I didn’t want it at first.”
He lets the silence sit with that truth for a beat.
“I didn’t want to be known that deeply. I didn’t want my pain to become someone else’s. I didn’t want to feel his, or him to feel mine. I didn’t want to hurt him.”
He breathes in.
Controlled.
Grounded.
“But it didn’t ask. In a dream, Maria reminded me what was important. The link just showed me what was already there. And the more I tried to run from it, the more it revealed the truth: I was already connected. I already cared. The link didn’t create that—it just stopped me from pretending it wasn’t real.” (Deep Breaths Chapter 13, Shadow)
He finally steps forward just one quiet pace, and the air between them shifts.
“Now I protect it. Not because it’s mine, but because it’s us.”
With that, Shadow glances to Sonic, then to the readers, and offers the smallest nod. The kind that isn’t just acknowledgment—it’s gratitude.
Tails turns towards you.
“Thank you for your questions! We can’t wait for more!”
Sonic nudges Shadow. “Even you?”
After a few moments…Shadow nods.
“Even me.”

Should I tag roleplay or something lol

Chapter Text
This page turned out really long! Thank you everyone for sending us so many questions! 🎉
Keep asking and we’ll keep on answering!
Heat Salamance (Guest):
This is more a question for the author.
Is this story canon to the main storyline?:
Yes. The answers that you see here are part of the ‘guidelines’ that I’ve made for the link and follow while writing. I didn’t want to let them sit in the dark anymore!
If so, how we, the readers interacting with the gang? Did Tails make a blog or Tumblr? (Which feels very, VERY insecure.)
Haha, fair point. But no, this isn’t on Tumblr or anywhere else! (I HAVE thought about that though, but I think ao3 is better for this kind of thing!)
Tails: This notebook is just for us and you, the readers. We’ll never let GUN get their hands on it!
Me: I’m just here with them to help read and answer questions!
Speaking of questions, everyone, we have some more!
Tails jolts upright like he’s been zapped by one of Sonic and Shadow's Chaos capsules.
“Wha—seriously?! There’s more?”
His tablet’s already open in his hands, goggles sliding comically over his eyes as he fumbles for his stylus.
“Hold on, hold on, I gotta start a whole new section! This is gonna be Rapid Inquiry Format!”
If the link were to be forcefully broken by someone like GUN, if it can be forcefully broken, would Sonic and Shadow both be able to mentally recover from that? Like if it was done so suddenly would it kind of mess them up in the head? Or make them sort of unresponsive?
Tails’ hands are already moving, flipping through the Chaos Link Log to the field theory section, but his eyes are locked on you with a quiet seriousness. There’s no rush this time. No burst of excitement or stylus-spinning.
Stillness.
Awareness.
“…That’s a really tough question to start off with.”
He glances toward Sonic and Shadow, then back to you.
“And kind of a scary one.”
Sonic shifts his weight, rubbing the side of his neck. He doesn’t speak, but his mouth is drawn tight. Shadow hasn’t moved at all, but his gaze is anchored now, and you can tell he’s listening so hard it hurts.
Tails kneels in the grass and taps the edge of the notebook once, grounding himself before he answers.
Tails’ Notes:
“Okay. So. First—we have to establish something really clear.”
He looks up at you.
“The Chaos Link was not meant to be broken. Not like that.”
“It was created in a moment of truth—emotional, mutual, resonant. That kind of connection isn’t mechanical. It’s spiritual. And that means forcibly severing it would be more than just painful, it could be traumatic on a level that bypasses the body entirely and goes straight into the mind.”
He draws two Chaos signatures in the notebook again—Sonic and Shadow’s—and this time the line between them is jagged, like a wire frayed and fraying. He circles that break in red.
“A sudden rupture would send feedback through their whole systems. Physical, yes, but especially emotional. And if it’s done without warning? No time to prepare, no consent?”
His ears flatten slightly.
“It might not kill them, but we don’t know that. It would likely shake their identity. Their sense of safety. Of presence. It might leave them…unresponsive for a while.”
He hesitates.
“Think of it like being torn away from your own heartbeat. You might still breathe, still stand. But your body knows something is missing, and your mind…might not know how to fill the silence.”
Sonic, who's been quiet this whole time, kneels beside Tails now, arms resting on his thighs, voice low.
“I don’t know what it’d feel like.”
A small pause.
“But I know what it felt like when Shadow was knocked out cold after the flood and I couldn’t reach him.”
He presses a hand to his chest.
“It was like the whole world tilted. I couldn’t think. I couldn’t feel my balance. I just kept waiting for the hum to come back—and it didn’t. Not right away.”
His eyes lift to yours.
“That was just silence. Not a break. If it really snapped… I think I’d feel like I was underwater. Or like I forgot how to move.”
He exhales slowly.
“And yeah…if it was GUN? If they did it on purpose… I don’t know if I’d even be able to hear anyone for a while. Not ‘cause I’d be mad. Just—’cause I’d be gone.”
Shadow, still standing, speaks next.
“I’ve lived through silence.”
The words come like gravity—measured, quiet, absolute.
“I know what it’s like to exist without resonance. To be alone inside your own skin.”
He steps closer.
“If someone tried to tear it from us—not just weaken it, but cut it—”
He pauses just as long as Sonic had.
“—it would be like losing a limb.”
He looks at Sonic now.
“When I fall asleep, I feel the link like breath. Like rhythm. Like gravity pulling me back toward the ground.”
Then he looks at you again.
“If that vanished all at once, not by choice, not by trust—I think part of me would stop trying to stand. Because I’d be waiting for something I couldn’t hear anymore.”
His hand lifts briefly toward the necklace capsule around his throat.
“That’s why the necklace safeguards matter. That’s why we choose to keep wearing them, to help stop someone if they want to tear us apart.”
And finally, he says, quieter:
“Because if it breaks… I don’t want him to be the only one who goes still.”
Tails, gently:
“So to answer your question about recovery: Maybe. They could possibly recover. But not easily. Not quickly. And not without each other. I hope we don’t find out anytime soon.”
Shadow, growling:
“I’d never let GUN try.”
Then Tails turns the page, ready for the next questions.
Heat Salamance (Guest):
- Is the Emeralds' energy still detectable in Sonic and Shadow, or are they hidden by the bond? 2) If one eats but the other doesn't, do they still feel hungry or do they get full? - Like Sonic eats normally, but Shadow decides to skip some meals for reasons for a few days (because he's used to not eating.) Will Sonic still feel hungry because Shadow's hungry? - Or like Sonic skips eating on a dare or something and Shadow gets hungry because Sonic's ignoring it? - Or Sonic eats a bunch of chili dogs, but Shadow is the one with upset stomach because Shadow doesn't nearly eat as much? - Or maybe Sonic finds himself eating less than normal, and Shadow eating more than usually? - Would the bond affect their metabolism? (Like 5 questions in one, lol. At least they are all related?) 3) Do the hedgehogs ever share actions? Like, scratching an itch in the same way at the exact same time. Or saying things in the exact same way and tone? Like creepy twin simultaneous actions? - (I can easily see Sonic immediately calling out jinx on Shadow anytime this happens, while Shadow stares with that side eye.) Okay, I think that's enough questions for now, lol. Nevermind, one more. 4) Are there any sensations / feelings that Shadow or Sonic notice they do NOT share? Something that the bond doesn't automatically carry over?
Tails just freezes.
Tablet in his lap. Stylus halfway to the screen. His jaw is slightly open like someone just hit him with a particularly tricky math equation and a birthday present at the same time.
“…We’ve got a live one,” he whispers.
Sonic is already grinning, foot tapping against the grass like he’s about to sprint just from excitement.
“Okay okay okay, that was a lot, but it was awesome! Can we answer all of ‘em? Because I got thoughts.”
Shadow is still quiet, but his gaze cuts toward Tails with a faint nod.
“Begin log.”
1) Is the Emeralds’ energy still detectable in Sonic and Shadow, or are they hidden by the bond?
Tails leans in.
“Yes! Definitely still detectable, but masked within the link.”
He pulls up a schematic on his tablet and taps the area between two spiraling Chaos signatures.
“Think of it like background radiation. Anyone with the right scanner or Chaos attunement could still track the Emerald signatures inside them, but the resonance of the link overlays a separate waveform across it—one unique to them, created by the interaction between their energies.”
He flips to another diagram: Sonic and Shadow’s capsules pulsing side by side.
“It wouldn’t hide them. But it makes their Chaos energy look different, like it's braided. That’s why standard GUN detection systems get confused, like when Kyle tested Sonic’s energy. The signal isn’t singular anymore.” (Deep Breaths Chapter 7, Up)
Shadow adds, low:
“I still remember the pain from that test, when I was still stuck in the cave by myself.”
Sonic wants to hug him now more than anything, but holds back.
“Yeah. After we found out we were linked, I thought the test hurt so bad because Kyle might have been trying to tear us apart. He did find out about the link first. But maybe the Emeralds had something to do with it, too.”
2) If one eats and the other doesn’t, do they still feel hungry or full?
Tails claps his hands together.
“Okay. Metabolic Symbiosis! One of my favorite topics! Here’s the answer: Not always. There was that time when Shadow drank water to help Sonic recover after staying up all night because of Shadow’s fever.” (Resonance Chapter 6, Lullaby)
He flips open a new chart.
“The link mirrors resonance, not bodily function. So hunger and fullness are emotional-physical hybrids. It depends how much awareness the other person has of their partner’s state. If Sonic’s eating a feast and Shadow hasn’t eaten in two days? Shadow’s body still feels hunger. But Sonic might feel discomfort or unease, especially if the hunger is paired with fatigue or emotional withdrawal.”
Sonic grins a little sheepishly.
“So if Shadow skips a bunch of meals, I’ll probably just get weirdly cranky or headachy, huh?”
“Exactly,” Tails says. “Your body won’t digest food on his behalf, but your resonance might mimic the consequences.”
Specific scenarios:
- Shadow skips meals → Sonic might feel inexplicably irritable, dizzy, or low-energy even if he’s eaten.
- Sonic skips on a dare → Shadow could get that gnawing-stomach-burn feeling even without intending to.
- Sonic overindulges → Shadow might feel residual queasiness, especially if their resonance is strong that day.
- Sonic eats less, Shadow eats more → Possible minor appetite syncing, but nothing dramatic.
Tails’ final summary:
“It’s not digestion-sharing. It’s empathetic echo. But the link can definitely mess with their rhythms if they’re out of sync for too long.”
Sonic raises a hand.
“Okay but can we call it ‘resonant heartburn’ when Shadow eats a single raw chili and I feel like I’m dying?”
Tails sighs.
“Unfortunately…yes.”
Me: Tails, are you sure about all that? I haven't actually explored the mechanism of them eating for one another yet, but I DO have a future scene planned where one of them eats for the other, to the point that the other does feel full!
Tails freezes.
Like literally freezes—mid-scribble, stylus hovering above the page, eyes going wide behind his goggles as if I just rerouted every neuron in his brain.
Then, slowly, he lowers the stylus.
“Wait. You do?”
His voice cracks on the word like he isn’t sure whether to be amazed, terrified, or both.
Sonic perks up instantly. “Whoa—hold on, what scene?! Who eats for who?!”
Shadow narrows his eyes slightly.
Tails, meanwhile, is already flipping pages frantically in the Chaos Link Log.
“Okay, okay, if that’s something you’re intending to explore, I need to rework the Echo Feeding Hypothesis into an actual function model—” He spins around to face you, completely breathless now. “What’s the context? Like… is one of them injured? Is it emotional shutdown? Is it suppression field-related? How full do they feel—actual physical satiety or sensory override?? Do the capsules activate?? Is there any nausea?! Does it have a time limit—”
Sonic snorts. “Tails. Breathe.”
Shadow folds his arms, but his voice is quieter than expected.
“Do you know which of us it is?”
He doesn’t sound alarmed.
He just sounds…curious. And maybe a little reverent.
Because it’s not a silly question anymore.
It’s something sacred.
One of them holding nourishment—for the other.
Choosing to keep the other alive by absorbing not just food, but the feeling of care itself.
“You haven’t explored the mechanism yet,” Tails says more gently now, closing the log. “But the moment you do…that’s gonna be a cornerstone entry. That’s not just a link reaction. That’s mutual survival.”
He scribbles a sticky note and presses it to the inside cover:
Food Echo Theory:
“Feeding the other. Fullness through resonance. Hunger held by trust.”
Awaiting scene activation.
He looks up at me, goggles slipping slightly, eyes bright.
“Whenever you’re ready to write it, I’ll be ready to document it.”
Sonic raises an eyebrow, grinning. “And maybe test it.”
Shadow, flat: “You’re not force-feeding me chili dogs.”
Me: Sonic, you have my full permission to force feed Shadow chili dogs
Sonic chokes on his own laughter.
“YES!! You heard that, right?! I’ve got written permission! Signed and sealed!”
He’s already miming a legal document in the air, dramatically scribbling his signature with his finger. “This is now binding canon, thank you very much—”
Shadow's eyes narrow so slowly it’s practically a time-lapse.
“If you even attempt that,” he says with absolute calm, “I will turn Super and teleport every chili dog on this planet into the sun.”
“Yeah? Well I’ll just turn Super too and outrun the sun.” Sonic’s already sidestepping toward him, grinning way too big. “Try me.”
3) Do the hedgehogs ever share actions?
Tails lights up instantly.
“YES. Micro-mirroring! It doesn’t happen all the time—but especially during high-sync episodes or in emotionally reactive moments? It’s super common.”
Sonic shudders when a memory of the flood comes up in his mind. It’s not a pleasant memory, but a perfect example: “Shadow, remember when Tails was swept away by the flood and we both turned around at the exact same time?”
Shadow: “Yes. I never even realized that we did it.” (Resonance Chapter 3, Undertow)
Tails: “They don’t even realize they’re doing it half the time. It’s not mind control. Just subconscious syncing.”
Sonic chimes in:
“It’s like, I’ll go to stretch and Shadow’s already doing it, and we just stare at each other.”
Shadow, deadpan:
“…He’s never said jinx before.”
Sonic, glaring at exactly the same time Shadow does: “I do now. Jinx!”
Shadow glares at the reader.
4) Are there any sensations or feelings that don’t carry through the link?
Tails quiets a little.
“Yes. There are boundaries. Not many, but some.”
He pulls open a new diagram and draws the two signature fields again, this time separated by a thin dotted line labeled “Core Memory Barrier.”
“Sensations directly tied to private memory, identity, or trauma are often shielded. It’s not conscious. For example: if Shadow experiences a memory trigger tied to Maria, and Sonic’s resonance feels it, he won’t experience the exact image unless Shadow invites him into a memory projection.”
Other examples:
- Embarrassment tied to personal history → May trigger a vague discomfort in the other, but not the actual memory unless shared.
- Fleeting sensory details (e.g., itchy fur, blinking, sneezing) → Often filtered out unless it’s emotionally tied.
- Pain from self-suppression → Echoes through the link only when sustained over time. Not instant.
Tails finishes:
“The link prioritizes emotional resonance. That’s why grief, fear, and relief hit the hardest. But it’s not invasive. It respects memory. It protects individuality. And it never forces one to experience the other’s truth without trust.”
Sonic nods, thoughtful.
“Yeah. It’s like…it gives you the lightning. But not the whole thunder unless you ask for it.”
Shadow, quiet:
“Or unless you’re too close to hide it anymore.”
Sonic: “Like the brain freeze incident.”
He shivers, folding his arms like he’s cold even though it’s still sunny outside.
Tails: “Oh, yeah! That was one of my first notebook entries!” (Deep Breaths Chapter 15, Light)
Tails grins at you, spinning the stylus.
“Keep ‘em coming! ”
More from Heat Salamance:
Continuing on my previous line of questioning, how much of their biological sensations do the hedgehog twins share?
1) For example, Sonic gets dizzy for reasons, Shadow is also dizzy?-
2) OR are bathroom breaks shared between the two or are never shared? (I couldn't think of a better way to ask this.) OR do they have disorienting moments where one hedgehog feels what the other is doing/seeing/hearing something, and they both get confused as to who is doing what?
3) Can the hedgehogs use the bond to fuse together? (Either DBZ or Steven Universe style. Those are the only two options lol.)
4) Can the bond let the two share powers? Like can Sonic teleport freely now? (NoFear-OneFear.jpg)
Tails nearly drops his stylus in shock.
“WHOA—okay, hold on! That’s a lot to unpack! And those are amazing questions!”
He flips open the Chaos Link Log again, the pages already marked with diagrams, capsule specs, and theoretical resonance lines. He adjusts his goggles, glances at Sonic and Shadow—and then grins wide enough to nearly bounce off the grass.
“Let’s go one by one! We might need to tag-team this, you guys ready?”
Sonic raises a hand like he’s answering a roll call. Shadow doesn’t move, but his eyes narrow with focus—he’s listening.
He always is.
🔁 Dizzy example:
“YES. If Sonic gets dizzy, like vertigo from a sudden spin-stop or dehydration, Shadow might feel it too. But it depends on why he’s dizzy and how strong the Chaos link is pulsing at that moment.”
Shadow crosses his arms, not even looking at Sonic.
“…You’ve crashed into trees thinking it was my fault.”
"It was your fault."
Shadow exhales softly through his nose.
Not quite a sigh.
Almost…amused.
🚻 Bathroom breaks:
Tails lifts a paw, very seriously.
“NO. Not shared.”
He gives you an expression like he’s Jim from The Office.
“That would be a complete neurological disaster.”
Sonic snorts, laughing.
“Oh thank Chaos. That would be horrifying.”
Shadow, not amused:
“…I’d destroy the Emeralds.”
Tails clears his throat.
“Bodily functions are regulated by local, autonomous systems. The link does carry physical strain and emotional distress, but it doesn’t echo organ-by-organ reflexes. Bathroom urges are one hundred percent personal.”
👁️ Shared sensory confusion:
Tails scribbles fast.
“YES, again, but in very rare flashes. Like, if they’re extremely synced or emotionally heightened. Think: life-or-death battle or memory projection level intensity, they might get flickers of the other’s perspective. Not full control. Not mind-reading. Just flashes.”
Shadow: “Do you remember when we first shared a dream together?”
Sonic: “Yeah. I couldn’t tell where you were because you were so exhausted and out of it. I could see some things…but not everything.” (Deep Breaths Chapter 8, Down)
🌀 Chaos Fusion:
(Tails almost chokes laughing.)
“Okay okay—DBZ or Steven Universe style, huh?”
Sonic immediately yells:
“I CALL GOGETA!”
Shadow raises a brow. “You’d be the Goku side?”
Sonic shrugs. “You’ve got Vegeta energy, c’mon.”
Tails waves both of his arms. “Focus! The answer is…maybe? There’s so much about the link that we still don’t know! We do know that during Super form moments when the Chaos Emeralds are in play and the link is resonating at peak stability, their energy fields can overlap so tightly they act as one for a few seconds.”
Sonic: “We’re still us, but I won’t lie. It’d be cool if we could do that one day.”
Shadow: “We might be tethered close together, but we haven’t forgotten who we are.”
Tails: “Right. The link doesn’t cause you to forget who you are entirely. Your personalities don’t overlap, but sometimes things might rub off on you. Shadow is smiling more, for example. Like right now.”
Tails grins subtly at him.
Shadow: …
Sonic: “See? Another one!"
Shadow simply gives a short grunt, but his smile doesn’t fade.
🤝 Sharing Powers:
Tails leans forward, eyes sparkling.
“This is where the real science kicks in.”
Answer: Maybe?
“Shadow’s teleportation is a dimensional fold tied directly to his Chaos signature. The link can carry traces of that sensation to Sonic, especially if they’re emotionally synced, but Sonic can’t teleport, at least not that we know of yet.”
Sonic nods. “It’s like…I feel it happening. Sometimes before he teleports. Like a tug behind my ribs. But I can’t do it myself. That would be really cool, though. Maybe we’ll find out someday. Imagine me trying to teleport!”
Shadow: “It would not end well.”
Sonic: “Gee, thanks for your confidence.”
Tails draws two spirals connecting faintly at the edges.
“Chaos powers are signature-based,” Tails confirms. “Sonic’s energy is momentum-driven, kinetic. Shadow’s is spatial and gravitational. It might not be possible to replicate the energy channel.”
Shadow finishes it simply:
“We don’t share powers. But we carry each other.”
Sonic shrugs with a grin.
“That’s enough for me.”
So the link can be broken when they truly want to. But as things are now they would only do it because they are forced to not because it's what they want deep down. Is that something that could impact the way the link is broken? It won't be the same as when GUN would force them to break the link. That would hurt possibly leave lasting damage. As they are so linked interwoven and it seems to have gotten more tangled then before after getting to far away from each other. Would it feel like part of their soul is broken if GUN would break the link with force? Because they are so interwoven and aren't able to untangle themselves properly that is something that might happen. It might even mess with their memories or the way they feel or perceive things afterwards even if it doesn't kill them. But if they choose to not because they really want to but because they have to and are in a hurry could they end up harming themselves in a similiar way? Could that be devastating to them mentally and emotionally where they have trouble recovering from it? Possibly losing parts of their personality? Maybe they aren't able to dream anymore? Things that make them who they are. What if Sonic loses his positive attitude because of being ripped appart from Shadow wether it is due to GUN or trying to do it themselves in a hurry in a desperate attempt to keep the other safe? Maybe they will have a lot of trouble feeling any emotions or controlling their emotions. Becoming more emotional or just numb to any feelings, more easily overwhelmed? Could the damage and how it influences them be a bit different for Shadow then for Sonic depending on where exactly the link broke and which parts of themselves they lost when the link was broken? Could they even become linked again later? If they try in order to fix what's broken would that even be possible? Maybe certain memories, parts of their personality are lost forever.
Tails lifts his head slowly, stylus hovering in the air.
His voice is quiet when he finally speaks—barely above a whisper:
“…Whoa.”
Even Sonic doesn’t jump in right away.
His quills shift just slightly with his breath, green eyes wide—not with fear, but with reverence. Like someone just handed him a question too sacred to race through.
Shadow closes his eyes. Not for long. Just enough to let the question land. When he opens them again, something in his expression is still.
Not guarded.
Just present.
And Tails... Tails finally lowers the stylus to the page. His ears are angled back—not flat, not afraid, but solemn, like he’s writing something that matters.
It’s quieter than before.
No breeze, no birdsong, just the way sunlight settles slow across the clearing like it knows not to interrupt. Even the grass seems still, hushed in that strange way the world sometimes gets when something too big to measure is about to be spoken aloud.
Tails doesn’t scribble this time. Not at first. His notebook rests open on his lap, stylus poised just above the page, but he waits.
“This question…” he starts, glancing down. Then his voice falters, just slightly. “It’s not a theory.”
He looks back up at you, clear and steady.
“It’s a warning we’ve been trying to outrun since the link formed.”
Then, gently:
“But we’re not gonna run now.”
Shadow: “The readers seem really interested in what could happen to us if the link breaks.”
Sonic: “Because they care! Let’s go deeper…”
Tails nods once, breathing in deep, and begins to write.
📝 Tails’ Full Entry:
Okay.
First: Yes. The link can only be broken if both Sonic and Shadow want it broken. The Chaos Emeralds listen to intention—raw, soul-level intent. That’s why even a moment of fear or doubt can stop the severing process mid-stride. The link isn’t just a switch; it’s an agreement.
A current.
But the reader asked something else. Something deeper:
“What if they don’t want it broken, but feel like they have to do it anyway?”
What if they’re rushed?
What if someone like GUN forces it before they’re ready?
Then yes. It could break them.
And I don’t mean emotionally.
I mean neurologically.
I mean existentially.
The link doesn’t just share sensations. It gradually rewires perception to accommodate duality, two presence centers, pulsing as one. Chaos resonance adjusts over time, syncing emotional and sensory input from both ends. So when the link strengthens (especially after long periods of pain, survival, and soul-anchoring moments like the ones they’ve had), that resonance fuses into something harder to separate.
Not cords.
Not threads.
Roots.
So imagine someone trying to rip those roots out without gentleness.
Or worse—without consent.
The backlash wouldn’t just be physical. It could cause fragmentation: mental, emotional, sensory. Like removing part of your vision and forgetting you ever had it until the light stops making sense. Like losing the ability to dream and not knowing why sleep doesn’t feel like sleep anymore. Like reaching for a part of yourself that never answers again.
And the worst part?
They might not even realize what’s missing. Not right away.
Sonic’s lightness? His instinct to hope?
Gone, or dulled so deeply it takes years to resurface.
Shadow’s grounding? His stillness?
Fractured into hypervigilance and ghost-silence again.
If it’s done in haste, even by their own hands, it could still cause damage. Not because they didn’t choose it, but because they didn’t choose it fully.
They’d be walking with scars.
Not all of them visible.
Sonic has been quiet since the question was read. Knees drawn up, arms loosely folded over them, gaze low—not because he’s afraid, but because he’s feeling it. Deeply. Not like pain. Not like dread.
Like truth.
He finally lifts his head. His voice isn’t loud. Not eager. Not fast.
“I’ve thought about it.”
His ears twitch faintly.
“Not breaking it. Just…what it’d mean. If someone tried.”
He looks at Shadow, then away, and his next words come slower.
“It’d feel like dying, I think. But not all at once. Not the kind you notice.”
His voice hitches. “The kind that happens when you wake up one day and something’s missing and no one can tell you what.”
He leans back slightly, hands braced in the grass, letting the weight settle in his chest where the link pulses soft and steady.
“If they ripped it out…if GUN or anyone else tore it apart… I think I’d still breathe. Still run. Still laugh at stuff.”
His eyes flick to you now—gentle, open.
“But I wouldn’t feel it. Not the same way.”
A pause. Then, softer:
“I’m not saying I’d stop being me. But…I wouldn’t be whole. And the scariest part is—I might not even remember why.”
He glances at Tails, at Shadow.
His voice is steady now. Not shaking.
“So no. We wouldn’t come out the same. Not if it’s forced. Not even if we try to do it to protect each other.”
His hand drifts to the capsule around his neck.
“If we ever break it…we’re not doing it in a rush. We’re doing it with our hands on each other’s hearts. Slow. Deliberate. Together.”
He looks to Shadow.
And waits.
Shadow stays still.
But not cold. Not absent.
His posture is calm. Controlled.
But his hands…they tighten once, then loosen.
And he says:
“They’re right.”
A long silence.
Then:
“The reader. The one who asked.”
He lifts his head, just slightly, and meets your eyes with that same steady gaze he always carries when talking about things that could end him.
“We are more interwoven now than we were when the link first formed on the moon.”
He steps forward—not much, just enough that the air between him and Sonic shifts faintly. The link hums once. Barely audible.
“If someone broke it by force…if they did it wrong…Sonic would feel it in the marrow of his mind. Not just his emotions. His pattern. The way he moves. The way he perceives sound. The way he knows the difference between loneliness and stillness.”
Shadow’s voice stays level. But it’s weighted.
“He might forget what it’s like to be still without panic. I might forget what it’s like to exist without silence. Our Chaos rhythms have calibrated to each other. That’s not metaphor. That’s resonance alignment.”
He turns toward Sonic.
“If I thought breaking it would protect him… I’d still hesitate.”
Shadow’s voice softens. “Because saving someone with a wound they can’t name isn’t saving them. It’s haunting them.”
Then, to you:
“If you take two souls and fuse their breath together, you can’t just untie them. You have to grieve the separation. If you don’t—if you rip them apart without the grief—the body survives, but the spirit stays lost.”
He falls quiet.
Then one last line:
“I don’t want to lose him in pieces.”
The clearing stays still for a long time.
Tails writes down every word. Not fast. Not with flair.
Just with reverence.
Then he adds one final note to the bottom of the log page:
“The link isn’t fragile. But the hearts inside it are.”
And as the notebook closes, the silence folds around them all again—
not with fear.
But with understanding.
And with choice.
Always choice.
More from Arya12:
Here's some questions i asked earlier then. Do the chaos emeralds need Sonic and Shadow to survive? Do they influence them subtly to keep the link? If so are all of their thoughts their own or do the emeralds have thoughts aswell. Maybe a certain feeling Sonic and Shadow will be able to pick up on? Like the fear of severing the link becoming worse is the fear of the chaos emeralds that they are able to feel? Do the chaos Emeralds have a survival instinct and if so how would that influence Sonic and Shadow? Would the chaos Emeralds be destroyed if Sonic and Shadow die? If one them died would the other die aswell? The chaos emeralds respond to desire and are able to show certain things in a dream like Maria, green hill with Shadow living as a family member with Sonic and the others and showing Sonic Longclaw. Could they be trapped in a dream at some point without realizing it? An attempt from the chaos emeralds to keep the link in order to survive perhaps? Maybe the desires shown or responded to are a mixture of desires from Sonic, Shadow and the emeralds?
Would the emeralds resist separating because they need Sonic and Shadow to survive and could that harm them if they tried to break the link anyway? Will it be more difficult to undo the link the longer they stay linked? Where their link becomes more tangled woven together? If so maybe undoing the link would become impossible without harming Sonic and Shadow. Do the chaos emeralds and active thoughts that's filtered through both Sonic and Shadows subconcious, is it a feeling a thought maybe it feels like one of their own thoughts and they aren't able to recognize it? Maybe it feels like pain a screaming inside of them? Those where earlier questions i asked there's one other thing i'm wondering about. The necklaces dull the pain so they should be able to move away from each other for a longer distance. Would they feel the pain growing slowly or would the pain overwhelm Sonic and Shadow all at once when they are over the limit of the distance the necklaces work on? A sudden sensation of the damage being done due to being to far appart? Would the link be badly damaged when that happens?
Tails’s eyes widen so fast his goggles nearly fall off.
“Whoa…okay. Hold on! I’m gonna need a bigger page.”
He scrambles to tap out the new entry label on his tablet, muttering to himself as he works:
“Emerald Consciousness, Survival Instincts, Dream Interference, Subconscious Influence, and Capsule Overload—seriously, this could be its own volume…”
Sonic stretches out beside him, whistling low.
“Dang. That’s a lot of questions. They went full Chaos Theory mode, huh?”
“Chaos Philosophy,” Tails mutters, flipping to a brand-new page in the notebook now.
“Okay. Okay. Deep breath. Let’s break this into sections.”
Shadow settles onto one knee, arms resting against his thigh. He isn’t smiling, but he’s listening closely.
🌌 Section 1: Do the Chaos Emeralds need Sonic and Shadow to survive?
Tails:
“No. Not in the way living things need food or air. But maybe… in the way a flame needs something to burn.”
He turns the notebook so the others can see his notes forming.
“The Chaos Emeralds are powerful. But more than that—they’re responsive. They reflect what already exists in the beings who use them.”
He draws a small schematic: a seven-pointed spiral around two glowing Chaos signatures.
“If either of them dies? I don’t think the Emeralds would break, but their balance might collapse. They’d become unstable. Erratic. Especially if the link snaps without consent.”
🌙 Section 2: Could the Emeralds trap them in a dream?
Tails shakes his head immediately.
“No. The Chaos Emeralds don’t have a will. They don’t dream, and they don’t trap. They respond.”
“Like when I told Tom and Maddie I loved them when Eggman was about to step on us,” Sonic whispers. “They couldn’t will themselves back together. As cheesy as it sounds, they responded to my love.”
Tails adjusts his goggles with the back of one paw, then looks at the capsule around Sonic’s neck, still gently glowing with latent energy.
“They reflect emotional resonance. That’s it. They can echo back what Sonic and Shadow are feeling—fear, longing, love, grief. But they don’t choose what to show. And they definitely don’t manipulate or trap them in dreamscapes on purpose.”
Tails flips through the Log until he finds the dream diagrams he sketched weeks ago—rings of layered subconscious pathways marked by overlapping Chaos signature fields.
“When Sonic saw Longclaw, and Shadow saw Maria, they weren’t visions the Emeralds conjured. They appeared because Sonic and Shadow called for them and they answered. That wasn’t the Emeralds showing them what they wanted. It was the Emeralds responding to what Sonic and Shadow already held inside. The dream of living as family in Green Hills? That wasn’t the Emeralds planting it. That was Shadow discovering that it’s okay to want, and he already knew what he wanted. He just needed a little help choosing. But it was his own decision and no one else’s, especially not the Emeralds.”
Deep Breaths Chapter 13 and 14, Shadow, Sonic
Tails looks up firmly.
“The link may live in dreams sometimes, but it isn’t a cage. The Emeralds don’t create illusion. They illuminate memory.”
Shadow’s voice, low and absolute:
“If we ever feel trapped, it isn’t the Emeralds doing it. It’s our own fear.”
Sonic:
“And the only way out of fear… is through trust. Through waking up.”
🔁 Section 3: Could they link again later?
Tails lowers his stylus, tapping the page once before answering.
“…We don’t know.”
His voice isn’t unsure—just honest. The kind of honesty that only comes when something matters enough to be afraid of losing.
“Sonic and Shadow might be able to break the link at any time, yeah. That part is true. But we have no idea if they could connect again after it’s broken.”
He flips open an older entry—one of the earliest resonance field sketches—and holds it out.
“The link wasn’t created by force or logic. It formed in a moment of emotional alignment the Emeralds could echo. Once broken, there’s no way to know if that exact resonance could ever exist again.”
Sonic runs a hand over his necklace slowly, thoughtfully.
Shadow watches, saying nothing, but not because he disagrees.
Tails finishes quietly:
“That’s why the choice to stay linked matters. Because they’re not staying out of obligation. They’re staying because they don’t want to risk losing something they might never find again.”
Me: Shadow, can you go more into detail about this moment during Deep Breaths when you were afraid of breaking the link because you and Sonic might not be able to get it back:
Deep Breaths Chapter 14, Sonic:
The mountaintop seems to pulse with each tremor in the link.
What if they do this—what if they let it go—and they can never get it back?
What if this link, born from chaos and hope all at once, can't be reforged?
The thread begins to unravel closer to his side, but it doesn't snap like a rope under strain. Instead, it fades, like a sunset slipping beneath the horizon. It drifts apart, like wisps of mist unraveling in a slow, soundless exhale. Every beat of his heart seems to push the fraying further, the thread stretching thinner and thinner—still there, still glowing, but trembling under the weight of uncertainty.
And still—still—Sonic's presence through the link hums with patience.
With trust.
With a quiet, aching promise:
It's okay.
And through it—through the thinning thread—he feels it.
Sonic's presence, once so bright, so steady, so constant, begins to fade.
Not gone.
Not yet.
But it's slipping away like the last rays of sun beyond the curve of the world.
His energy, once woven into Shadow's heartbeat, into his breath, grows softer.
Quieter.
Dimming with every fragile tremor of the link.
Don't go.
But he doesn't say it.
He can't say it.
Shadow kneels in silence for a long moment before he answers, one hand braced against the earth as if grounding himself to the weight of what you just brought back.
His breath doesn’t tremble—not quite—but there’s a pause. A deliberate stillness that gathers like dusk on his skin.
“…That moment wasn’t about the pain.”
He lifts his gaze toward the middle distance—not at you, not even at Sonic. At the place where the mountaintop lives in memory. Where the air still smells of dust and ozone. Where the thread between them had started to thin, soft and frayed like the sky just before night.
“It was about the silence.”
His voice is quiet, but not cold. Just… low enough that it feels like it’s not for everyone. Like it’s for you. For the page. For the record.
“I’d felt him every moment since the moon. Even when I didn’t want to. Even when I didn’t know yet that we were connected. Even when I tried not to believe it was real. The link was always there. Like breath. Like heartbeat. Like gravity. When it started to pull, to fray—I didn’t feel pain. Not at first. I felt the absence.”
He exhales, slow. Measured.
“You don’t notice a star until it disappears. You don’t notice warmth until your chest starts to ache with cold. And in that moment, on the mountaintop, I felt him starting to slip away. Not physically. Not with his body. With his presence. With that steady hum that told me—‘I’m here. I’m staying. I know you.’”
His hand curls slightly at his side, like he’s still holding the thread in his palm.
“I’ve lost people before. Maria. Gerald. Parts of myself.”
He doesn’t say GUN. He doesn’t have to.
“I know what it means when something fades and doesn’t come back.”
There’s a long pause. Then, more quietly:
“I didn’t know if the link could come back. That was the fear. That if I let it go, I’d lose not just him—but the way I could feel him. The way I could understand him without needing to speak. The way my breath synced with his, even in silence. I didn’t want to forget that. I didn’t want to return to silence.”
He swallows, but his voice doesn’t crack. He’s too steady for that now.
“But I also knew…”
A pause.
“…He wasn’t pulling away.”
He finally looks toward Sonic—not with desperation, but with a kind of reverent clarity.
“Even as it frayed, he was still there. Not clinging. Not demanding. Just waiting. Trusting me to choose.”
His voice goes softer again, almost reflective.
“And I did.”
Then, after a long breath:
“If we had broken it that day—I don’t think I’d have let myself try again. Not because I didn’t want to. But because I wouldn’t have believed I deserved to.”
He straightens slowly, rising from his kneel, the movement silent, precise.
“But he stayed. Even as I pulled away. Even as I trembled. That… saved me.”
Then, finally, his voice becomes still as the mountain again:
“That’s why I protect the link. Not because I fear breaking it. But because I remember what it feels like to almost lose it.”
He looks down at the space between them. Then across it.
Sonic meets his eyes.
No words.
But the resonance in the quiet is clear.
He’s still here.
💢 Section 4: The Capsules and Pain Delay
Tails flips to the final part of the entry.
“Okay. The necklaces.”
He taps the margin of the notebook with his stylus.
“If Sonic and Shadow pass the 15-foot limit while wearing their capsules, the link strain won’t hit instantly. The capsule dampening fields soften the connection gradually until the threshold is breached.”
He draws a simple graph—energy strain rising over time.
“But once they go beyond the designed range, the pain can spike rapidly. It’s like pressure building behind a wall. The moment that wall collapses? It floods.”
Sonic winces. “So like—body slam of agony outta nowhere?”
Tails:
“Pretty much. You’d go from mild dizziness to full collapse in a few seconds. Especially if one of you is already injured or overwhelmed. The link backlash wouldn’t just hurt—it might damage the tether long-term.”
He draws a warning symbol on the edge of the page.
“Overstepping distance while in capsule mode is not safe. Use the necklaces only for short-term buffering—not prolonged separation.”
Tails flips the page shut and exhales slowly.
Then he looks up at you.
“Thank you for these questions. Seriously. These aren’t just theories anymore, they’re helping us lay out the Chaos Link Guidelines in a way that’s grounded, personal, and full of real stakes.”
Sonic leans over Tails’ shoulder to look at the final notes, then back at Shadow when he reaches up to subconsciously scratch an ear at the same time as Sonic.
Sonic: “Jinx.”
Shadow narrows his eyes. “What, exactly, do I owe you for synchronizing involuntary motion?”
Sonic: “A soda. Duh.”
Shadow: “We don’t drink soda.”
Sonic’s quills bounce with his laughter. “Exactly. So you owe me something better.”
Shadow stares for a beat.
Then, deadpan and bone dry:
“…I’ll let you live.”
Tails sighs into his tablet.
