Chapter 1: Golden Opportunities
Chapter Text
Zelda sighed as she leaned her head against the side of the car, her eyes scanning the road signs as they drove. She caught signs for Hyrule State University, as her stomach twisted in knots.
Despite having spent most of her early childhood growing up in Castle Town, returning after everything that had passed made her nervous. She fiddled with a rubix cube she kept in her pocket as she heard the GPS tell them their next exit would be in 12.3 miles.
“Little bird, are you going to tell me your worries or are you going to stew in them forever?” Urbosa, her step mum, asked without even taking her eyes off the road.
“How did-”
“I've known you since the day you were born.” Her voice was warm and comforting, “Now what has been troubling you?”
“It's strange being back here. After mum's passing. It feels like forever since I was here last.”
“Your mum would be proud, little bird. We always hoped that you would follow your passions.”
“Do you think father will show up?” She asked, her eyes fixed on the floor.
“He said he wanted to help you move into your dorm.” Urbosa's voice was much more curt at the mention of her daughter's father. “We shall see won't we.”
Zelda bit her lip as she thought about what she wanted to say. She knew Urbosa wasn't much of a fan of her father. She never said anything rude about him around Zelda, but she remembered the legal battles during her parents divorce and how they began again following her mum's passing. She'd heard muffled arguments between the two from outside the courtroom. The anger in her father's eyes when the court allowed her to stay with Urbosa full time. “Is it bad that I want to see him?” the eighteen year old said hiding in her oversized hoodie.
“Of course not. He's your father.” Urbosa felt her heart break at the girl's words. She wanted to say more to reassure her that he would be there to see her off. However after years of cancelled plans, missed birthdays and rare phone calls, they both knew where their expectations were.
Their old Subaru outback that Zelda had loving named Naboris when she was eight, speaking slightly as they pulled into the long line for the dorms. Urbosa mumbled something in Gerudo that was most likely a curse as she stared at the line ahead.
Zelda giggled at her Mama’s annoyance, “I offered to move in a week early.” She teased.
“And say goodbye to my little bird before I had to?” Urbosa's voice broke slightly, “If irritating traffic behind slow moving mini vans is the price I have to pay then so be it. Even if they don't know how to drive! They've been waving you forward for five minutes!”
“And you wonder why mum and I say you have road rage.”
“I don't have road rage. I have a low tolerance for idiots, there's a difference.”
“Sure....” Zelda laughed as they finally pulled forward.
Zelda sighed as she finished setting up the last of her things in her dorm. Her roommate, a Zora girl named Mipha, was out with her family, her things already set up. Zelda sank into her office chair while Urbosa, who couldn't sit in the office chair without almost hitting her head on the loft bed frame, sat next to her on a bean bag. “Thank you for your help.” She fiddled with the string of her hoodie.
“It's okay to be upset about it, little bird.” Urbosa placed a hand on the girl's shoulder.
“I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up. I've always been a disappointment to him.”
Urbosa moved so she was kneeling then cupped the girl's face, “You are not a disappointment. Your mother and I could have never gotten so lucky to have such a wonderful daughter. If he can't see that then that is his problem, not yours.” She wrapped her in a tight embrace, “I don't know what goddess thought to let me have the privilege to help raise you but I will never stop thanking her. You're the best thing in my life, little bird. Don't ever doubt that.”
“I love you, mama.”
“I love you too, my little bird.”
“Your record at the academy is impressive. Your superiors have nothing but good things to say about you. Your marksmanship is unmatched.” Rhoam looked over the documents in his hand, “While my daughter's higher education is expected, I know that the campus is hardly safe for young girls and is filled with distractions. Your duty is to make sure no harm comes to her and that she remains focused on her studies. I expect biweekly reports and your relationship with her is to be kept professional. Do you understand?”
Link looked through the documents, when his superiors had approached him about a security job for a senator, he'd thought it would be a side job as extra security for parties and events. He was glad he was able to keep his face neutral as he looked it over because this felt more like a job as a personal stalker than a bodyguard. Even with co-ed dorms they were separated by floors and he only had two gen ed classes with her as they were completely different majors. Not to mention his soccer practice. He bit his tongue before asking, “Does she know about thi-”
“No. And it is best if she doesn't find out.” His voice was heavy with implied authority. “I understand it is a lot to ask and you may need a day or so to think it over. I will meet with you two days from now for your answer.” Rhoam turned back towards his car without another word, leaving the young man standing there alone on the quad.
Link waited for the car to pull away as he placed the documents in his bag. He hated himself for even considering the job. His dad was sick and needed care that his military benefits didn't cover, his aunt and little sister were able to help care for him but it wouldn't be sustainable long term. His aunt was running out of PTO and his sister deserved to have the remains of childhood without having to worry about balancing budgets and medications.
He let out a sigh as he heard his slate go off in his pocket, he smiled as he saw a text from Mipha, his best friend since childhood who was starting as a freshman this year.
Keeperofdacutness (Mipha): Hey are we still meeting up later?
YaBoiLink: Totally, warning my roommate Revali is also probably coming with us. He insists that we play darts again. I think he's still salty I beat him last semester.
Keeperofdacutness: That's fine I can bring my roommate too and make it a group outing!
YaBoiLink: You haven't even met her in person and you want to torture her like that?
Keeperofdacutness: He can't be that bad
YaBoiLink: You'd be surprised, anyways I talked to the guy about the job and it was rough, I could really use the good stuff rn.
Keeperofdacutness: pffffffffffffft I'm sure I can deliver.
YaBoiLink: thank you, I'd meet up in person but I have to finish unpacking and last time when I watched him he started crying when I had to leave
Keeperofdacutness: You're his favorite person
YaBoiLink: YOU'RE his favorite person, I'm his favorite babysitter.
Keeperofdacutness: Still he looks up to you. Besides, it's not his fault you're a softie.
YaBoiLink: he's a foot tall, he looks up to everyone. Now show me the cuteness.
Keeperofdacutness: 🙄 yes sir
Link felt his whole face brighten as he saw the pictures of Sidon with his bright smile as he stood in the fountain by the library. Then his heart nearly exploded as he saw a short video of the little boy dancing happily to music being blared by the welcome committee. His heart swelled at the sight, allowing him just enough energy to push the discomfort of the job offer out of his mind for a bit.
“Alright. I'll text you when I get home. Remember you can call me whenever you need to. Always keep your drink with you at parties, make sure you always go out in groups and if someone corners you aim for the kidneys.”
“I know, I know. I remember my self defense training and I have my pepper spray.” She smiled as she felt Urbosa's hand on her shoulder shake just slightly, “I'll be okay.”
“I know. I'm just so proud of you.” Urbosa felt tears prick her eyes, “And I know your mum is just as proud. Our little bird has strong wings.” She gently tucked some hair behind the girl's ears, “I'll be back in a month for parent's weekend.” She wrapped her in a tight embrace then gently kissed her forehead, “Take care my little bird.”
“See you in a month, Mama.” Zelda smiled as she felt tears rain down onto her hair as her own ran down her cheeks. She was excited to be at college but saying goodbye to the woman who'd been her family through some of the hardest moments of her life even for a little while still hurt a bit.
She sat back on her chair waiting for her roommate to arrive. She pulled out her diary from her desk and clicked her pen.
Today is my first day of college. The drive over from Gerudo town was long but it was nice. Mama and I hadn't had a road trip in awhile, and it was nice to spend time with her like that. She even let me drive for parts although I'm surprised she didn't rip the handle off when I was on the interstate.
Father was supposed to help me move in but he didn't show. I'm sure he's going to text me an excuse later. At least before he had an excuse as I was a two or three day drive or at least a full day train ride away. He lives in Castle town, not even that far from campus.
I was an excellent student even during the divorce. My grades only slipped after mum died. He was furious when they did, and said I needed to work harder to achieve my goals. Yet I could barely stop crying.
I don't know why he doesn't seem to think I'm working hard enough. I know he'd be furious if he knew what my degree was. He wanted me to major in law, become a lawyer, judge or a politician like him.
It's not that some of it isn't interesting and I certainly like history but I love designing machines. I remember how many times I worked on little gadgets with mum. How mum, Mama and I would build massive sculptures out of Legos.
I miss mum so much still and I know Mama does too. We still talk about her but sometimes it's hard for both of us to even bring up. I know mum is proud of me. I just wish I felt like it was enough. How am I supposed to feel proud when I haven't even done anything worth being proud of.
Now that I'm here I feel like I can finally start doing something that will be worth caring about. I can use my understanding of engineering to help those who truly need it. Maybe even help people like mum, give them time she didn't get.
The door clicked open as a short Zora girl entered the room, “Zelda! It's a pleasure to finally meet you!”
“It's wonderful to finally meet you too, Mipha.” Zelda smiled shyly, despite exchanging numbers as soon as they were paired for the dorm and texting almost daily, she still felt a bit awkward meeting her in person.
“I'm going out with my friend and his roommate, they're sophomores so they know their way around campus and offered to show us around.” Mipha, sensing Zelda's nerves, “Link has been my best friend since we were children. He says his roommate is a bit of a jerk but they're always been competitive. Plus it will be fun.” She smiled brightly.
Alright, it would be nice to see more of the campus.”
“Great! Let's go!”
“Be nice.” Link warned his blue eyes were sharp.
Revali rolled his eyes at the hylian, “Come now, I'm not ungentlemanly.” The Rito smiled, “Besides I'm only rude to smug Hylian twinks.”
“You're so lucky Archery isn't a team sport.” Link grumbled as he kicked a small rock into the grass.
“Don't be mad, you won't be able to keep up.”
“Link!” A girl's voice called from up ahead as the red Zora ran to hug her friend.
“Hey Mipha” Link smiled softly letting go to turn towards the Rito, “Mipha, this is-”
“Revali?!” another girl's voice gasped.
“Zelda?!” Revali laughed brightly as he flew towards the Hylian girl pulling her into a hug. “It's been too long! I haven't seen you since middle school.”
“It's good to see you! Sorry I didn't keep in touch much.”
Revali shook his head, “You went through enough, I understand. Come on, let's make up for lost time.” He paused as he stopped by the other two, “Pleasure to meet you Mipha.” He smiled sweetly watching Link's face for a reaction, “I'm Revali.”
“Nice to meet you too.” She smiled back then looked at Zelda, “This is Link.”
Link waved, awkwardly. One on one with people he was fine chatting every now and then. He'd really only been chatty with Revali to make sure he behaved himself around Mipha and her roommate, otherwise they only exchanged barbs when Link felt like humoring him. Silence was his preference, however at this moment his silence was less because he intended to be and more because he was in front of a very pretty girl. Link signed “Nice to meet you, Zelda.”
Zelda perked, as she signed back, “Nice to meet you as well! Would you prefer I spoke to you in sign or talk?”
Link blinked a bit, Hylian sign wasn't super common. Mipha had learned because of him and Revali claimed he'd learned it simply because he said he wanted to be more fluent than him. “Speaking is fine.”
“Good! I'm a bit out of practice with my sign.” She blushed as she tucked some hair behind her ear, “I had a neighbor who was deaf when I was small, she used to babysit from time to time. I haven't really had to use it much since.”
“I remember her.” Revali smiled, “She was the old sheikah woman who made the sesame seed cookies.”
“Yes, she always made cookies when she knew she'd be watching me after school.”
“I know that's the reason I followed you home that one day.”
Zelda rolled her eyes, “Yes, it totally wasn't because you had an upset tummy because someone dared you to eat some Goron rock roast and missed the bus.”
The others snickered as Revali puffed his feathers slightly although he elbowed the girl slightly who shoved him back snickering.
Mipha giggled as she looked at Link's skeptical features, “See, Revali isn't that bad.”
He shrugged but a smile formed on his lips as they followed their friends up the quad.
Link took a deep breath in as his eyes narrowed on the dart board, Revali was winning currently, although mostly because Zelda’s face was buzzing in his brain. He didn't remember where he'd seen her before but he swore he'd seen her face somewhere. Her name was a bit of a dead end, any name related to Hylian Mythology was as common as mud, especially ones related to the old royal family from centuries past.
He knew some of this from personal experience as for most of his school years he was known as Link W. Technically his name was Lincoln but so were at least half the figures in the history books and the boys in his class. However, none of them went by Lincoln either.
He threw his dart as he searched his brain not bothering to check the score, he knew it had to be recent. Maybe I saw her moving her stuff in. No. I was helping coach Daurk get ready for practice tomorrow during the really busy move in times. Then I met with the senator- wait....he said he wanted me to watch his daughter. Link's eyes widened as he dropped the dart in his hand as he realized where he recognized Zelda’s face from. Shit.
Revali grumbled at the scoreboard. He'd won, which normally would have made him thrilled. However, Link missed the board. He'd been playing darts with his roommate almost every weekend at Telma's since freshman year. He'd played against him when they were both piss drunk and as infuriating as it was, he still managed to hit his target. He'd hit the board if he was close to going over and needed another round to think, but that had been precise. The throw he'd done had been thoughtless and distracted.
Winning because Link couldn't plan fast enough was fine, that was part of the game. Winning because he managed to score better was ideal. While he didn't like winning because Link was drunk, usually he was as well so it at least evened the playing field.
However, winning because Link wasn't paying attention, that was insulting.
The raven Rito raised an eyebrow at the hylian as he signed, “explain.”
Link froze before nodding towards the door and signing to Mipha, “Little overstimulated need fresh air.”
The Zora nodded before returning to her game of darts with Zelda. They were both terrible to the point their game was mostly seeing who could actually score, with Zelda barely ahead.
As the two men exited the bar. Walking a little further down to get away from the smokers, Revali finally spoke, “You're distracted. What's wrong?”
Link bit his lip before signing, “Remember that senator I was meeting up with about that security gig?”
The Rito rolled his eyes, “Yes, I remember this morning.”
“I thought it was just to be an extra guard for events. Turns out he wants me to keep tabs on his daughter and give him reports on how she's doing.”
Revali pinched the bridge of his beak, “Let me guess that daughter is Zelda?”
Link nodded, looking down at his feet, “This job offer would pay more than what I’d need to help cover expenses back home.”
Revali tapped his foot before he began pacing, “I'm going to take a guess that he doesn't want her to know about this.”
Link nodded again as he fiddled with a fidget toy on his keys, “I don't know if I will find a job that will cover a full time nurse for my dad and cover living expenses.”
“Fuck.” He cursed as he continued to pace, “Do you still have the paperwork?”
“It's in my bag at the dorm.”
“Thank Hylia you have a law student as a roommate.” He smiled smugly, “I'll look it over and then we can talk to Zelda.”
“But it says-”
“I'm sure it says something about her finding out. However, he will only know if she says anything about it. If we can get her to play along, we can come up with a plan that satisfies all parties.”
“I’m not a good liar.”
Revali chuckled, wrapping a wing around Link’s shoulders “It's not lying if it's mostly true.”
“Okay. Can you please go back to being obnoxious? You being this friendly is weirding me out.”
“Hah!” Zelda giggled as her dart actually hit a decent number.
“Don't celebrate yet!” Mipha laughed then missed the board completely, “I feel like I'm somehow getting worse.” She snorted.
“I'm running on dumb luck.” Zelda felt herself relax a little bit, “This is fun, I honestly expected college bars to be a sensory nightmare. Or at least deeply uncomfortable with creeps hitting on me.”
“Oh that's because it's not.” The Zora shrugged then blinked as she saw Zelda’s confusion. “Link told me earlier, he and Revali don't really go to the bars on campus because they're really loud. It's why it was a bit of a walk to get here. Telma's is also a gay bar so it tends to attract less creeps.”
“This is a gay bar?” She looked around at the rainbow flags, posters of various gay icons, disco ball, stage with go go cages and the giant rainbow neon sign with the name over the bar. “I think living in Gerudo town for so long skewed my ability to tell.” She looked down with embarrassment.
Mipha snorted, patting Zelda on the shoulder, “It’s okay. If Link hadn't told me I might have not realized myself. The Zora are also very accepting in that sense.”
The Hylian rolled her eyes before leaning forward a bit “so are Revali and Link together?”
“Hylia no. They're both disaster Bis but they're not that self sabotaging. From what Link says they're just friends who enjoy poking each other's buttons. As for myself I'm probably closer to straight for Zora.”
“So you're a disaster pan” Zelda snickered as Mipha’s face began to match the rest of her skin.
“What about yourself?” Mipha grinned, poking Zelda teasingly.
“I’m closer to a disaster bi then I'd care to admit. Both my mums are so I suppose it's hereditary.” She laughed, “Not that I've had much experience dating. I had a few boyfriends and girlfriends in high school but none that lasted that long.”
Mipha raised an eyebrow, “What about Revali? You two seem to already have a history.”
“I love him but not like that. Honestly I'm happy to see him again. We lost touch when I left Castle Town. With everything happening during that time, it was hard enough to manage just the day to day.”
“I understand.” Mipha placed a comforting hand on her shoulder, “I was a mess after my mum passed too, poor Sidon didn't understand what was happening, he was so young at the time.” She smiled a little brighter, “My dad was wonderful though, despite his own grief, he never let us doubt his love. Although I suppose it helps that my brother and I took after our mum. He’d say every time he heard my laugh or saw Sidon’s smile or caught a glimpse of our red scales in the sun he knew she was with us.”
“My Mama says the same thing about me. My mum and I were almost identical except my eyes are green.” She smiled remembering how often Urbosa said she'd been given the most beautiful girls in the world. How they'd held her mum's hand as she passed as Urbosa vowed she would never stop loving them.
The women had shifted, their game forgotten as they shared a moment of understanding. Both feeling a sense of comfort in the knowledge that their pain was understood.
The boys returned as did the lighter atmosphere, as the four enjoyed the night and each other's company.
Revali huffed to himself as he paced in their dorm. Normally he'd have rested but since tomorrow was just the first day of his gen ed classes he wasn't bothered. His keen eyes scanned through the paperwork.
Link sat on the floor with his head in his hands. His stomach felt sick as he recalled how there was a minimum number of hours he had to log as well as a template for the progress reports showing that she was maintaining a certain GPA. Including things he wasn't sure he'd be able to do without having access to Zelda’s student account. “It can't be legal right?”
“It shouldn't be but I don't know. It however definitely fits her dad's m.o.” Revali rubbed at his temples with his free hand, “I don't know or remember all the details but I know Zelda talked about him being overbearing and critical.” He sighed, “I can scan it, black out the names and email it to some of my law professors. They might be able to give me some advice. I do think we should meet up with Zelda before you have to meet up with Rhoam. I know from the cases I've studied if she confronts him without enough backing it may make him escalate or delete evidence. If you want to get your money, keep her safe from her father and keep this from getting out of hand we need to play this smart. If this is under the table shit, he may have you only sign a general security contract to avoid any specific incriminating evidence. Or we can print a look a -like for you to swap with the real thing. If he was dumb enough to play his hand this openly.”
“I can also turn it down.”
“Yes but you were banking on this security job. You're not untalented but coming up with another job that can cover expenses at home and here while attending college isn't going to be all that possible.” Revali countered, “And no doubt Zelda's father will just find another person who would have less of an issue with the ethics.”
“I still hate this.” Link sighed.
“Yes but if we work this out, you'll be able to care for your family, Zelda will get her privacy, Rhoam will get what he thinks he wants and I get to see that asshole getting fucked over.”
Link looked up, “That's a lot of venom even for you.”
“He made one of the kindest people I know suffer even more after the loss of her mother.” Revali’s normal snark faded into something much sharper, “I’d help you do worse if I knew how.” He took the paperwork over to their tiny shared scanner/printer, “I'll send these out. You text Zelda.”
“Me?! But she's your friend!”
“I'm not the one who's going to be stealing her father's money.”
“Fine.” He sighed as he pulled out his phone.
Mipha yawned as she climbed up onto her bunk, “That was fun but I have a class early in the morning.”
“It was! We.should do it again. Good night” Zelda answered with a yawn of her own when she saw a text from Link.
Link (Mipha’s friend): Hi. What's your schedule like tomorrow? I wanted to chat with you since we didn't really get a chance to at the bar. We can grab coffee at Rito Roast.”
Zelda blushed furiously at the text, she bit her lip trying not to squeak in case she disturbed her roommate. She checked her schedule, happy she managed to avoid anything too early.
Zelda: I can. How does 9:30 work?
Link(Mipha's friend): sounds good! Night!
Zelda: Night!
Chapter 2: Honest Schemers
Summary:
Link and Zelda talk
Chapter Text
Link sat at a table with his cup of coffee, leg bouncing anxiously. Kass, the owner of the local cafe smiled at him as he bussed tables.
“Waiting for a date?” The Rito smiled.
“What? Um no....” He signed still nervous.
He hummed at the young man's words, “Sure.” He snickered good naturedly as he returned to gathering dishes in his bus tub.
Link however was much too distracted to sense the older man’s amusement, especially when he saw her walk in. He felt his stomach drop. He stared down at his plain black coffee hoping that it would swallow him whole.
“Link! Good morning!” Zelda smiled brightly as she took the seat across from him. “Thank you for inviting me out for coffee this morning.”
Link nodded although he bit his lip, he lifted his hand about to sign when the barista called from the counter.
“I have a large caramel latte for a Zelda Bosphorous?”
“Oh that's mine.” Zelda stood as she went to grab the drink, “Honestly I don't know how father got into politics when half the people can't seem to pronounce our last name.” She tucked some hair behind her ear as she returned to her seat.
Link kept his face neutral but internally he was switching between how sweet and happy she was and how his next words would absolutely ruin it.
“Link?”
“Mmmmh?” He blinked as he looked into her emerald eyes.
“I saw the W on the cup, what's your last name? Has to be easier to spell than mine. Plus I’d like to add it to your contact.”
“Wilde” He spelled before taking a sip of his coffee. He kept eye contact but it was hard as the weight of the papers in his bag felt like a death sentence.
“Link Wilde.” She giggled as she typed it into her phone, “Makes you sound like an action hero.”
“Yeah” He shrugged, “I wanted to meet up with you today because of a job offer.” Zelda’s face changed immediately into confusion, as he started shaking from nerves. ‘When I was finishing up my service over the summer one of my Sergeant's was impressed with my skills. He knew I needed money because my father’s ill and needed a full time caregiver as well as money to help keep up with bills. He referred me to a senator who was looking for extra security.’
“Oh.” Zelda’s tone shifted from her joyful excitement to a calm but more professional tone. “So you're working for my father.”
“No. Not now. That's why I wanted to talk to you.’ He ran his fingers through his hair before continuing, ‘I thought the job would be just extra security for galas or events. Instead he told me he wanted me to guard his daughter, keep her safe but also make sure she stays on task.”
Zelda’s grip tighten on her coffee cup enough that the lid popped off, “I'm sorry I have to go-”
“Please stay.” He said his voice was raspy from disuse and softer than she'd expected.
“Fine.” She snapped as she sat back down, her arms crossed, “But make it quick.”
“I was deeply uncomfortable with it and asked if you knew about it and he said it was best you didn't find out. I said I would think it over as I didn't want to lose the opportunity as my papa needs help. However when I found out it was about you I freaked out. Revali noticed and that's why we went outside last night. He looked over the paperwork, made a copy and blacked out any personal information to send to his law professors for advice. But he insisted that I tell you all this as he thinks there's a way that you can keep your life private and I can still be able to afford to take care of my family.”
Zelda immediately rubbed her temples as a barrage of emotions crossed her face, “You didn't mention your mum?”
Link nodded, “She died in a car accident when my sister was four and I was nine. Killed by a drunk driver. That's why I don't really drink much. Papa had served enough that he was able to retire with honors so we moved off the base in Lanayru near Zora's domain back to his hometown in Hateno village to be closer to family.”
“That's how you met Mipha.”
He nodded, “Papa was diagnosed with Parkinson's a few years after Mama died. He didn't have much problems with it for a while. But it got worse with time and it became harder for him to work. Not that he let it stop him.”
Zelda snorted, “My mum had ALS and rheumatoid arthritis so I understand. She'd nearly given my Mama a heart attack multiple times because she was too stubborn to ask for help.”
“My dad worked as a general contractor and a blacksmith for the local farmers. When I was in high school his condition was starting to cause him more difficulties but he wasn’t going to quit. Half way through my senior year he had an accident and fell off a roof. He damaged his spine and ended up in a rehabilitation center to recover. His benefits covered it and I was able to pick up extra shifts at my part time job to help cover the bills at home. I had already signed up for basic before his injury but he insisted I still go. My aunt moved out of her apartment to help take care of my sister and the house while I was away. Unfortunately his insurance only covered a year. Most of my money from my service went to extending his stay while my aunt and dad dipped into their savings to help repair and modify the house so it would be accessible to him when we couldn't afford to keep him at the facility. He missed being home but I'm at college, my aunt is working to help pay bills and my sister is still in high school. We don't have someone at home to help take care of him. This job would allow me to hire a nurse to help care for him, drive him to appointments, and give him the quality of life he deserves.”
Zelda slunk back in her chair, “I understand. My mum had rheumatoid arthritis, ALS and type one diabetes. The last one wasn't really that big of an issue for most of it. However some of the medications from the other two didn't always play nice with her insulin levels at times. My parents divorced when I was six, my father was furious about it. He fought for full custody but eventually the judge let me decide which parent I wanted to live with full time and I said my mum. She moved in with my Mama after the divorce. They'd been best friends since college. Eventually it grew into love and they married shortly after. I still saw my father on occasions as they technically had split custody but he was usually too busy. Mum died when I was ten and he decided he'd try to fight for full custody again despite the will stating that Mama would take guardianship. He made it just as grueling as before and once again the judge asked me who I'd rather live with and I said Mama. She was granted full custody. After everything we both wanted a fresh start so we moved to Gerudo Town.”
There was a pause as both of them felt raw and sore from pouring their hearts out to each other. Link gave a tired smile as he signed, “Revali thinks we can work together to take his money, give him reports that say what he wants to hear and leave him none the wiser” He handed her a copy of the papers her father had given him.
She scanned them, her jaw tightening with each word she read. She felt anger boil in her veins as she realized that not only did her father live nearby but had been close enough to campus to offer Link a job as her full time stalker instead of simply helping her move into her dorm. She smiled sharply as she looked over at Link. “I’m in.”
Link looked at her his expression softening slightly, “If you would prefer to contact someone else about this whole mess or confront him about it directly, that's also okay. I know this has to feel deeply violating to you and I really don't want to capitalize on a situation that would put you in danger or make you uncomfortable. At the end of the day this is your choice so please think about it.” He smiled reassuringly, “The only reason I was hesitant on telling you is because I wasn't going to take the deal. Revali said that there was a decent chance given the amount your father is offering that he would find someone who would take his offer without taking into consideration your feelings and that would be worse.”
Zelda looked at him as she processed what he told her. She felt her heart warm realizing the sincerity of his words. She hadn't expected that, especially given his circumstances. He needed money to support his family, but he cared so much about the comfort and well being of a perfect stranger that he was willing to pass over this opportunity and let her handle it instead. “Thank you for talking to me. And you're right I should think it over. Although I worry if I talk to Mama about it she'll confront him about it herself.” She sighed, “I will however text Revali about what he finds out and we can keep in touch.” She gave him a gentle smile tucking hair behind both her ears this time, “I appreciate it and if you want I can also ask Mama about any resources that might be able to help your family. She might know some first hand.”
“Thank you.” He said with his voice heavy with emotion, “I'd really appreciate it.”
She heard her phone beep, “I need to get to class. But thank you for being honest with me.” She was about to leave when she felt a hand gently touch her shoulder. She looked at him, raising an eyebrow.
“If you would like...we can get coffee again tomorrow or some other time. If you're busy. We don't have to if you don't want to-”
“Are you asking me out on a date?” She giggled as his face flushed as she felt her own cheeks color slightly.
“Only if you want it to be. I just don't want you to think I was leading you on as I do think you're really pretty. Also I'm sorry that this “date” was a big conversation first thing in the morning on the first day of classes about how your dad wants me to stalk you for money. An actual coffee date is the least I can do.”
Zelda rolled her eyes as she shook her head, “You don't need to apologize. My father was the one who made this whole thing uncomfortable, not you.” She smiled, “but I wouldn't say no to seeing you again tomorrow.” She smiled as she left rushing off to her next class.
Link stared dumbstruck as he watched her leave as he tried to process how he managed to get a date out of this whole mess. I've never been so happy and confused in my life. And Revali always said I had no rizz.
Zelda was grateful when her class finally ended. It was one of her longer ones that consisted of an hour and a half lecture then an hour and a half lab with a fifteen minute break in between. Thankfully she had a bit before her next class and went to the library.
She had a small printer in her dorm room but it didn't have a scanner. She hadn't really thought she'd need one. Thankfully the campus had one available for a small price and she knew whatever she decided she needed to send a copy of these to her Mama.
Zelda sighed as she logged in to one of the computers already connected to the scanner as she bit her lip.
“Worried about setting off the queen of thunder?” a familiar voice smirked from behind her.
She rolled her eyes as she turned around in the chair, “I can't say I'm not.” She looked at Revali who was leaning against a bookshelf next to the computer. “How did you know I’d be here?”
“Just because it's been a while since we've seen each other doesn't mean I don't remember your favorite place to hang out was always the library.” He slid a thumb drive across the table, “Don't worry about having to scan them. I already made you a copy.”
“Do you really think we'll be able to screw over my father without getting in legal trouble ourselves?”
“Honestly?” He pulled up one of the desk chairs next to hers and sat down, “I have no clue but it would be very very funny if we do.”
“Six years, and you still haven't changed.” Zelda chuckled with a slight resignation, “She's going to kill him.”
“I'm shocked she didn't when your mom divorced him." He laughed, “Honestly I'm surprised she was able to stay professional considering she was your mom's attorney.”
“She knows when to deploy her temper. Although this may be the final straw.” She looked at him, “She's going to want to hear your little scheme, you do know that right?”
“You think she'll find it funny?” Revali asked, suddenly realizing Urbosa may be less than thrilled with his plan.
“Well she should be close to home now so you'll at least have a head start.”
“Goodie.” He chuckled nervously.
Urbosa groaned as she pulled into the driveway of her house. To say she was tired was an understatement, she walked into the small house and sank into the sofa. She stretched her legs as she checked her phone for text messages.
Bitch(Buliara): hey sis, did you survive the trip back from Castle town?
Dumbass(Urbosa): Just got home. My back is killing me.
Bitch: Pfffffffffft, getting old I see. How was dropping off the little bird? Did the slug show his face?
Dumbass: The drop off went well although I miss her already. The slug didn't even bother with an excuse this time. Just didn't respond or show his face.
Bitch: Sounds about right for him. And I'm glad little bird had you with her at least.
Dumbass: My house is so quiet.
Bitch: So are you going to be spending all your time at my place to bother me and my little Riju? Or are you going to end up adopting a kitten or a puppy to fill the void.
Dumbass: ha. ha. It will take getting used to but I'll be fine.
Bitch: Sure......
Urbosa rolled her eyes as she stuck her tongue out at the phone. She knew her little sister wouldn't see it but she liked to think that the sentiment was felt. She sighed as she felt her exhaustion catching up with her. I really am getting old, it's only eight and I’m ready for bed. Although driving for the better part of two days will do that to you. Five if you count the three we took to get there.
She felt her eyes look over at the mantle where a picture of herself, her wife and their daughter on their wedding day sat. She felt her chest ache as she remembered how happy they were then. She knew her wife, her Zelda was beaming with pride at her and their little bird. She yawned when her phone buzzed.
“Little bird! I didn't expect a call so soon. Is everything okay?” She immediately pulled herself up from the sofa.
“I'm fine. I just wanted to make sure you arrived home safe.”
“I’m glad you're studying biomechanical engineering and not politics like your father wanted. Because you, little bird, are a rotten liar.” Urbosa couldn't help the worry in her voice, “What's actually going on?”
Her exhaustion was quickly replaced by rage as Zelda explained everything she'd learned. Urbosa had prided herself on not speaking badly of her child’s father as she knew that despite the fact he didn't deserve the air in his lungs let alone the love the girl had for him, it didn't change the fact that part of that girl still loved him. This however came close as she immediately grabbed her laptop, “I’ll take a look at the paperwork now. Let me know what Revali's professors say and I'll reach out to some contacts for Link.”
“Thanks Mama....I still can't believe Revali thinks we can get money from Father though. If the contract isn't legal then wouldn't he be able to sue to get his funds back?”
Urbosa smirked as she looked over the contract, “No because he wouldn't have grounds to sue. If the contract itself isn't valid but he pays Link for the job, then if he were to realize he'd been screwed he'd have to find a way to argue that he is owed money from someone who broke his illegal contract. Which any judge with half a brain would throw out. The contract is null and void and he'd have no one to blame but himself. The question is if the contract is actually legal. Now where are my readers?”
“Mama, when are you just going to admit you need actual glasses?” Zelda snickered as she already knew Urbosa’s reading glasses were in their case on the table where she always left them.
“When my hair turns grey.” Urbosa huffed as she located her glasses.
“So when you run out of hair dye?”
“You're a cheeky little bird.”
“I learned from the best.” Zelda giggled.
Urbosa couldn't help but laugh, “You're damn right.” She paused as she recalled the conversation the girl had told her, “So tell me about this Link boy.”
“Mama.....no.”
“What? You said yourself he was very kind to tell you this and that he was originally going to turn down the offer. Seems like a gentleman especially if he offered to take you on a real date.”
Urbosa heard shuffling before another voice she'd recognized from Zelda’s calls with Mipha before they'd moved to their dorms piped up, “He's such a sweetheart. Revali and I have bets on when they'll get married.”
“Mipha!! Shut up! We didn't even go on an actual date yet?! Didn't you have a crush on him too?!”
“Yeah when we were children. I also wanted to be the first president of the moon when I was a child.”
Urbosa laughed while holding her stomach, “Well I'm sure you two have classes tomorrow. Try not to stay up too late. Love you.”
“love you too.” Zelda laughed as she hung up.
Urbosa looked over at the picture again, “My darling Zelda, our little bird is doing well. And I think you'll be more than pleased to know she has some good friends.”

Chapter Text
Link waited again at the coffee shop, he was still nervous, but less so now that everything was out in the open. He bounced his leg humming to himself then beamed brightly as he saw her walk in. "Good morning!" he signed happily.
“Good morning” She smiled back as she took her seat. “How was your first day of classes?”
“Boring but not too bad so far.”
“You never mentioned your major?” She asked, curious to see what sparked his passions.
“I’m actually still undecided...”
“But you're a sophomore aren't you?” She looked baffled considering how much research and time she spent debating on colleges. She'd even had a spreadsheet where she'd given different schools points based on distance from home, student quality of life, if they focused more on medical or engineering. She'd chosen Hyrule State because it actually had an undergraduate program for biomedical engineering with classes on design accessibility.
“Yeah, I mean my family wanted me to have more opportunities than they did. I was decent enough at school, my enlistment and my soccer scholarship basically has my whole college paid for so I figured I'd just see what sticks.”
“So why did you enlist? I know you mentioned your dad is retired.”
“I mean with Hyrule being at peace with itself and its neighbors for a long time. Most of what we do is essentially help people. Lots of disaster relief, helping dig wells, build schools, and transport medical supplies. I like traveling, I like helping people and it's nice to get to do both. The training is hard and the work can be grueling but it feels good to see what we've accomplished. I spent most of the summer helping out in Lurelin after that big hurricane. Actually worked a bit with Revali as he was helping with supply runs.”
She grinned brighter as she saw how much more animated he was than before, “Surprised you don't study medicine or something if you like helping people. The school is good for it.”
“I don't know. My aunt is a nurse and I'm proud of the work she does but I don't know if I could handle it everyday. If the Hyrulean military was like a more traditional military that went out and killed a bunch of people I don't think I could handle it either. Saving people is nice. I like helping people recover from disasters and build back. But with health care both mental and physical sometimes the best you can do is just help them be comfortable. Watching my dad's illness that he was trying to fight, seeing him ignore doctor's orders and knowing that even if he did follow them he'd get worse either way. It hurts. I don't know if I could deal with that for work all the time.”
Zelda nodded as she looked down at her coffee cup, “I understand. I remember when Mum was diagnosed with ALS, from what Mama said that it was the final breaking point in her marriage with my father. She knew that he wouldn't help take care of her. When Mama found out she just held her hand and told her she'd be there for her no matter what.” She felt grief and nostalgia filled her chest as tears pricked her eyes, “And she was. Despite everything she never made Mum feel like a burden, she loved and doted on her til the very end.”
“She sounds wonderful.” He reached out and gently gave her hand a squeeze, “I’m glad you have her in your life.” His phone buzzed and he frowned. “Your father texted, he said he will be here later to collect the signed documents.” He looked up at her, “Any word from your Mama?”
“She just sent me an email and Revali forwarded one from his professor.”
“Oh Revali forwarded it to me too.” Link opened as Zelda opened the one from Urbosa. “So the prof thinks whoever wrote this is a moron because it's a heavily modified standard issue security job contract that had and I quote ‘a private investigator and a white hat hacker stitched in their to cover any bases without any legal continuity and a NDA that is as loud and flimsy as a fast fashion Lurelin shirt.’” he snorted as he saw the wide eyed Zelda across from him, “What did your Mama say?”
“I don't think I feel comfortable quoting this in public.” Zelda slid her phone away like it had committed a grave sin. “Let's just say she's mad that he would try and pull this and that he somehow made it through law school and this was the best he could come up with.”
Link, who turned the phone looking over Urbosa's response, “Wow, was she in the military? This is drill Sergeant level skill.”
“Ex Marine actually.”
“Oh hey, same branch.”
Zelda blinked as she processed what he had signed, then looked at the young man across from her that she remembered as being shorter than her, “You're in the Marines?”
Link rolled his eyes as he huffed before opening his gallery on his phone, “My graduation from basic.”
Zelda felt her brain short circuit as she saw him in the dress uniform of the Hyrulean Marine corps. She remembered reading through an article that the dress uniforms for the Marines were heavily inspired by the old royal guard uniforms, even bearing the original royal crest despite having disbanded the monarchy. She remembered rolling her eyes at her mum for keeping a photo of Urbosa in her uniform in her wallet, although hers had Gerudo influences to honor her heritage, however in this moment she understood why. “You look...v-very nice.”
“Thanks.” He said softly.
She blinked as he looked at him, “You spoke?”
“You were so red I didn't think you'd look at me long enough for me to sign.” He snickered.
Zelda blushed deeper as she let out a little huff, “So you talk only to tease me?”
“I mean if it means you keep making that face yeah.” He grinned brightly, “You're cute when you're mad.”
“Shush.” She desperately tried and failed to hold his gaze as the alarm on her phone went off, “I have to go to class. I'll text you later. Let me know when you sign the thing.”
Link nodded but gently grabbed her hand before kissing her knuckles, then waved as he left her standing there staring at her hand. She knew she was beet red all the way to the tips of her ears and yet she didn't have the heart to care.
Rhoam stood on the edge of the campus, his eyes scanning the quad for anyone who looked vaguely like either the boy or his daughter. As opposed to the suit he'd worn before he chose to wear a dark red hoodie and mahogany slacks. He waited patiently as he checked his watch. The boy was running behind which was irritating and he was sure to tell him that when he showed up.
He'd picked Link out of the list of candidates that his associate Sergeant Koshia had recommended because he was the top of his class, the best marksman in the academy, went above and beyond with his orders and most importantly had an interesting quirk of being almost entirely mute. That last trait had sealed it for him as that worked in his favor.
He loved his daughter but she was as willful as her mother. Worst yet she always kept him at arms length whenever they were together. He had done his best, hiring her the best tutors money could buy, enrolling her in a proper private school, double checked her homework for mistakes, making sure she corrected them before she went to bed.
He'd made sure she would succeed, it was why he had felt so blindsided in court. He remembered the custody battle, he knew she'd try to take her away from him. It's why he had been so in favor of allowing his daughter the option to choose. He remembered the betrayal he felt as he heard her say she wanted to stay with her mother.
Her mother, who could barely stand, robbed her of her potential every time she took her away from her studies, and would undermine his authority whenever he tried to set things right.
Their relationship had been fine before. Sure her illness was inconvenient but it was tolerable back then. She was as beautiful and sweet as her father had told him she would be. They were both of proper lineage both from old nobility, her family being one of the oldest. His own family was on the younger side for the lords but their heavy investment in industry and legacy of accomplished political figures meant they had the funds her family had lost and they had the prestige he wanted.
He was furious when she'd served him with divorce papers. He'd put up with her for years despite illnesses without complaint. He was everything her father approved of and they both knew that she'd be disinherited if she left him. Yet she did and for Gerudo woman to add insult to both their families legacy.
When she died, he thought he had won. Finally, he could reclaim his daughter and she would be his legacy. Yet once again she had betrayed him. He gritted his teeth as he remembered seeing her running into the arms of that calamity who'd stolen everything from him.
“Sorry I'm late.”
“It's fine. I'm glad you finally changed your tune. You had me worried for a second. After all, I only want the best for my daughter’s safety.”
The boy nodded as he handed him the signed documents.
Rhoam smiled politely as he took them, double checking the signatures. He pulled a check out from his pocket and handed it to the boy, “Here's a little signing bonus. You'll get the next one and the ones after when you turn in your bimonthly report. Remember not a word to her about any of this. She's much too delicate for such things.” The boy only nodded again before giving a salute. “Good. See you again in two weeks.”
Buliara shook her head as she watched her older sister absolutely wailing on the punching bag, “I said I wanted it broken in, not broken.”
“Yeah well you didn't read the fucking shit that the slug wrote in that document.”
“I can't understand legalize.” She said as she wrapped her hands
“You own a boxing gym. You signed legal paperwork, have staff contracts?” Urbosa stopped punching to stare at her sister with horror.
“Yeah and I paid someone to write and explain it to me and had you double check their work.”
Urbosa frowned as she recalled all of that, “I really should have charged for that.”
“But ya didn't.” Buliara smirked.
“Finish wrapping, get your mouth guard and put on your damn gloves.”
“Wow, it was that bad?” Buliara didn't increase her wrapping speed, in fact she decided that it needed to be redone completely and began undoing the work on her hand. She didn't mind taking a punch every now and then but Urbosa's fury wasn't something anyone deserved to be on the other end of with the exception of the slug.
“He went to law school. He was a practicing attorney and politician when we were in college. That entire contract wasn't just insulting to my child with the violation of her rights of privacy but it was an insult to the legal profession. An AI would have done better.” She growled, “Bad enough he stole years of my wife's life because he was buddies with her shitbag father. Now he's trying to control my daughter’s life?!”
“I mean whether you like it or not the slug is the sperm donor.......” Buliara’s voice held a certain level of hesitation. A silent unspoken but known question lingered longer than either found comfortable. “I mean she's eighteen, she has access to the trust for her college already. They can't take that away from her can they? It's not like he knows that's even a possibility she's not his. The slug and the shitbag hated you simply because you were a Gerudo regardless, voe, vai, in-between or neither. Hell, I think they'd have hated most Hylians.”
“The slug is the overseer of the trust. If there's anything on there that could mean that it gets taken away from her, he’d do it.” She stood still looking down at the floor, “That's not just her college fund, that's a Master's degree and a PhD paid for guaranteed. Hell we weren't that bad off and I'm still paying student loans. If my wife hadn't had some accounts she left in my name and didn't have friends who’d do pro bono work to help get the medical debt off my back, I’d have been fucked six ways to Sunday. I barely managed to break even on the houses and the move. I'm okay now and I'd be able to help some but she'd still have to take out loans.”
“She could get scholarships.” Buliara added, finally re-wrapping her hand as she saw her sister’s rage had calmed. “She's certainly smart enough.”
“She is.” Urbosa felt a proud smile form on her lips, “I don't want to clip her wings.”
“Given how you described the slug’s intelligence, your little bird may have those wings to begin with because of you.” Buliara gave her sister's shoulder a gentle squeeze, “blood or not she is who she is because of how you raised her. You were more of her parent to her than he ever was. I just don't want you to live in fear because of him. It's unbecoming of you.”
“Buliara, if she were my biological child, don't you think that she'd, I don't know, not need SPF 90 to go outside.”
“Okay your wife came from the oldest noble family left, that's concentrated white. Also cousin Teake is pale for a Gerudo and great auntie Malon passed as a Hylian”
“Yeah a tall Hylian.” Urbosa countered, “I’ll add looking over her trust paperwork to list.”
“Oh there's a list now?” Buliara raised an eyebrow as she adjusted her wraps on her other hand.
“Of course there's a list. I need to talk to that voe that Rhoam thought was dumb enough to fall for his fake paperwork and was in a bind enough to need the money.”
“And totally has nothing to do with him dating your daughter.”
“They aren't even officially dating. They've had like two or three dates.”
“Excuse me for being presumptuous. I just remember how panicked you get every single time she starts dating someone.”
“I don't get panicked. And if I did it was when she was just a child. She's a full grown woman now. She is perfectly capable of handling any person she decides to spend time with.” She adjusted the straps on her gloves before hitting the punching bag, “Now are you going to keep fiddling with your wrapping or are you going to put your damn gloves on and fight me already?!”
Buliara groaned realizing that the rage had returned in full force and that she was caught in her delays, “Just give some trust to her. She'll be okay. Especially if the voe was honorable enough to be honest with her about it.”
“If he so much as hurts a hair on her head I'll.” Urbosa growled as she slammed her fist into the bag hard enough that it swung back and forth like a spring door stop.
By the seven, I really didn't feel like getting my shit rocked today. Buliara sighed as she grabbed her mouth guard and gloves resigned to her fate.
Link groaned as he walked into the chemistry lecture. He needed another science class and all the biology classes were full by the time he went to sign up. He dreaded this class although at least it was only once a week with the lab following after. The downside being that this was an eight week class which meant that it was also faster paced than the regular. He quietly yelled at his past self for forgetting to check his requirements earlier.
“Link?! Over here!” Zelda waved from a seat much closer to the front than he ever would have taken. He didn’t like being noticed especially in a subject that had murdered him in high school.
However he couldn't say no to her. Not when she smiled at him like that. He scooched over to take the seat next to her, he set his bag down. "I knew we probably had a few overlapping classes but I didn't know you were taking chem?"
“It's required for my major. Part of building machines that work within a person is understanding how the elements within them react with each other.” She beamed practically vibrating with excitement as she continued to explain the overlap between chemistry, biology and engineering.
He stared into her emerald eyes, watched the way her nose crinkled as she spoke and her ears wiggled as she excitedly explained something about oxygen and iron. He had thought she was intelligent before but she was already running circles around him. She was in her element, her happy place and he would listen to her read the entire periodic table if it meant she looked this happy all the time.
“Link?” She flushed slightly embarrassed, “Sorry, that was probably too much.” She looked down hesitantly.
He placed his hand on top of hers giving it a gentle squeeze before he responded, " I like it when you're excited."
Zelda blinked, her brain trying to process the words he'd told her. She felt a part of her chest squeeze tightly. “Thanks.....So why are you taking chem?”
He let out a deep resigned sigh, "I signed up too late to get any of the science classes I like. I'm not good at chemistry."
Zelda giggled, squeezing his hand back, “I'm pretty good at chemistry so if you don't understand something I’ll help explain it.”
A small smile formed on his lips, "I’d like that."
(later that day)
Zelda yawned as she stretched out in her bunk. She'd finished the assigned reading for her lit class, knocked out two written assignments and a quiz. She didn't really need to as it was still early in the semester but it was an old habit that was hard to break.
She remembered how many times teachers had told her they admired her work ethic. That she was one of the few students who knew how to manage her time wisely. She remembered how she'd pick at the skin on her thumb when they said that. Anything to avoid that pressured feeling in her chest.
Every time she was called a goody two shoes, teacher's pet or a freak for always being the first one finished on any assignment for class, she remembered her weekends at her father's. She had friends with divorced parents, they talked about how they hung out with their fun parent on the weekends or got extra holidays. She'd always laugh and say that it was similar.
The truth was much less fun. It's consistent with her sitting at her desk pouring over her homework. Her father’s presence looming like a king waiting for a peasant. She remembered handing him worksheets and essays with shaking hands. His glower when he saw a mistake or read something he didn’t think was up to his standards. His words hit like a slap, “Redo it. You can do better.”
A vague memory of herself at eight years old flashed in her mind. Her writing and rewriting a small essay about her family. She knew how important her lineage was, she wanted to include as much as she could but she didn't know how. Her little body trembled as she wrote down a seemingly endless list of names from a record book as tears welled in her eyes. She remembered Urbosa finding her in her room still at her desk at 2 am.
Her Mama’s large hand covered her entire shoulder, her voice heavy with sleep, “Little bird, I think you've done enough for tonight. You need to rest so you can learn at school tomorrow.”
“No. Father says that a proper young lady acknowledges her lineage.” She squeaked as if she thought she'd be punished.
“A proper young lady also needs her rest.” Her Mama gently placed her other hand near her waist clearly going to scoop her and put her to bed.
Zelda let out a choked cry, “No! Please, it's not finished. I can't. It needs to be perfect.” She sobbed her little body clinging to the desk.
Her Mama stopped sinking down low to meet her gaze, “Did you try your best?”
Zelda nodded, gripping her pencil tightly in her little hand.
“Is it due tomorrow?”
The little girl trembled as she nodded, looking like she'd expected to be scolded, her voice soft and raspy from crying, “It's an essay about my family. Father read it last night and said I needed to acknowledge my family history.”
She watched as the woman gently took the stack of papers. Her eyes scanned through the first few pages where the girl had written about her mom, Mama and father. Then saw the small transition paragraph between her immediate family and her extended relatives. Urbosa took a pencil off the desk, marking a spot removing the first two pages and setting the others aside. “You can change this into your conclusion.”
“But what about my lineage?” Zelda’s voice trembled.
“Family is the people who love you, related or otherwise. Lineage is a history of people you are related to but they never met you and you never met them. They aren't the same as family.”
Zelda’s brow furrowed as she looked up at her Mama's face, “but they're related to me?”
“Do they know your favorite color?”
“No.”
“Have they given you a birthday card?”
“No?”
“Then they're not family.” Urbosa said simply.
The little girl looked nervous, unsure if she should accept that logic or not. “But what about father-”
“I will talk to him. You're not going to be in any trouble. Now let's get you to bed.”
“But the paper-”
“You only need to change one sentence and that can be done in the morning.” Urbosa smiled before kissing her forehead then let out an exaggerated grunt as she lifted the child, “My little bird is getting so big.”
“But you'll always be able to carry me. Even when I'm big and strong.” Zelda paused, “Right?”
Urbosa let out a hearty laugh, “For you? Always.” She pecked her cheek causing the little girl to giggle as she was gently tucked into bed.
“Nighty night, Mama.”
“Nighty night my little bird.”
The young adult smiled as the memory faded then looked at her phone. She saw a new message and felt a small panic form in her chest.
Mama bird: hey little bird, I'd like to help Link and his family. Is there any way you could give him my number or something so I can figure out everything.
Lil Bird: be nice to him
Mama bird: why does everyone keep saying that?! When have I not been respectful?
Lil bird: You asked the last person I dated what they saw themself doing in five years.
Mama bird: That's a valid question!
Lil bird: for an interview!!! And we had only dated for a month.
Mama bird: ..........ugh I hate when Buliara is right
Lil bird: pffffffffffffft wait til Riju starts dating then you can get your revenge.
Mama bird: oooo I didn't think of that. Anyways I will do my best to be nice to him.
Lil bird: okay. But if he tells me you asked him about his 401k or something I will tell auntie Buliara about it
Mama bird: 😱😱 betrayed by my own child??
Lil bird: 🙄 alls fair in love and war. Anyways I'm going to go prepare Link for questioning. 🤣😜 Love you
Mama bird: make sure he's in a false sense of security 🤣 Love you too 🥰
Zelda snorted as she saw a text from the man in question.
LinkWilde❤️: Hey how does dinner and a movie sound for our first date date?
Shesofkinprttyimgnnadie(zelda): first date date? What does almost daily coffee dates not count?
LinkWilde❤️: Okay they count but there's a difference between casual dates and dress up dates. I wanna take you out on the town not just spend an hour with you before classes
Shesofkinprttyimgnnadie: pffffffffffffft you don't have to. Also I grew up here, pretty sure I'd be able to plan a night out better than you
LinkWilde❤️: Is that a challenge, princess? 😏
Shesofkinprttyimgnnadie: maybe......
LinkWilde❤️: You're so on. And I'm going to win. Friday I'll take my princess out on the town for the best date ever
Shesofkinprttyimgnnadie: Saturday I'll show my knight how it's actually done 😎 also my Mama thinks she might be able to help your family
LinkWilde❤️: holy shit really? That's awesome!
Shesofkinprttyimgnnadie: yeah......she wants to talk to you about it over the phone to get more details and figure out what she can do
LinkWilde❤️:.............
Shesofkinprttyimgnnadie: Link?
LinkWilde❤️:..............
Shesofkinprttyimgnnadie: I mean at least it gives you some inside for parents weekend?
LinkWilde❤️: can I just email her?
Shesofkinprttyimgnnadie: 🙄 one phone call won't kill you
LinkWilde❤️: one phone call with your ex Marine 8 ft something Gerudo mom might
Shesofkinprttyimgnnadie: She's nice. She might ask some awkward questions but she's very sweet
LinkWilde❤️: Is she gonna ask me about our sex life???!
Shesofkinprttyimgnnadie: We don't even have one of those yet
LinkWilde❤️: Yeah but she doesn't know that! She just sees me as the guy your dad hired to stalk you.
Shesofkinprttyimgnnadie: You're spiraling. Would you like me to be there for the phone call?
LinkWilde❤️: Yes pls. And hold my hand.
Shesofkinprttyimgnnadie: how the fuck did you manage to get into the Marines?
LinkWilde❤️: they only expect you to listen and act. There are no phone calls with scary moms in the Marines
Shesofkinprttyimgnnadie: don't worry I'll protect you, big baby
LinkWilde❤️: thank you. When do I have to make the call?
Shesofkinprttyimgnnadie: I don't know text her first
LinkWilde❤️: I have to text her too?!
Shesofkinprttyimgnnadie: oh my Hylia really? Link. You're better than this.
LinkWilde❤️: What do I say? Hey this is Link the guy who's dating your daughter that your wife's ex husband technically hired to stalk her but told her so now we're working together to take his money?
Shesofkinprttyimgnnadie: Hi this is Link, Zelda said you wanted to talk so you could help me find resources for my family.
LinkWilde❤️: I'm copying that to send to her.
Shesofkinprttyimgnnadie: you're ridiculous
She rolled her eyes, chuckling as Mipha walked in.
“Oooh did Link send you something?” Mipha grinned as her phone vibrated.
“Did Revali send you something?” Zelda smirked back watching her roommate’s face flush to match the rest of her skin.
“Who told you?!”
“I'm literally dating his roommate.”
“Link wouldn't say anything”
“Fine. Revali asked me for date ideas.” Zelda snorted.
“Why didn't he ask Link?” Mipha blinked as she set her bag down and sank into her chair.
“Revali thinks that's cheating. And also apparently asking Link for help with his love life would be admitting defeat somehow. I don't know, those two are weird.” Zelda shook her head, “and I thought Mama and her sister were bad about irritating each other.” She hopped down from her bunk, “Since I'm not above using my resources as an advantage, and Link and I made a bet to see who could plan a better date, any advice?”
“hiking, rock climbing and backpacking. Honestly, just normal camping is good. I say this as his best friend since we were in kindergarten together, he would live in the woods if you let him. He's closer to a cryptid than a Hylian. However, if you do, bring foot spray.”
“Does that help with blisters?” Zelda asked as she typed out the ideas on her notes app.
“No, but his shoes are a biohazard. When something smells bad my baby brother uses Link's shoes as the end of the scale.”
“Thank you for the warning.” Zelda sighed, “Revali molts like crazy. And you will find feathers everywhere. They spent like thirty minutes vacuuming before we came over. Also you will be poked by a feather more than once. You're a pin cushion for life. Although it's worse in spring. He visited my house once during spring break; there were still feathers there when we moved out. I'm pretty sure I've unintentionally eaten some considering how many there were.”
“I suppose considering Zora shed our scales at least we'd be even?” Mipha sighed, “Any ideas for my dates with Revali?”
“Take him to a scary movie.”
“He likes horror movies?”
Zelda grinned, “They’re not his favorite but when he's scared he puffs up and looks like a giant cucco and it's adorable.” She grabbed her phone before scrolling through her favorite album before showing a picture of a young Revali puffed up clinging to Urbosa's arm. “We went to a haunted house. We didn't even go inside but I managed to snag a photo. He also still had some of his baby feathers.”
“Oh he's so cute! He's like a little puff ball. We are definitely watching a scary movie. Although that's more for my amusement than an actual date.” Mipha countered while still cooing at the photo.
“I'd say take him to an amusement park or an arcade. He loves rides, games and junk food. He's also a wizard at those rigged carnival games. I used to make him get me stuff when we were kids.” Zelda giggled, “Now what's a date idea for my amusement?”
Mipha bit her lip, “Watch a sappy rom com. He cries every time. Like full on snot running out of the nose crying. He is a marshmallow.”
Zelda snorted, “Oh well now I know what to do when my Mama visits. One sappy rom com and they'll both be in tears.”
“My dad is also kind of a weenie when it comes to scary movies so it works as well. Granted, watching a giant Zora trying desperately to shrink in on himself is just as funny as the fluffy cucco.”
“Link is going to be eating his words for our date.” Zelda grinned smugly.

Chapter Text
“Why won't you help me!”
“It's cheating.”
“How is it cheating?? I'll help you impress Mipha!” Link groaned, shooting daggers at his roommate. “Is this because you're embarrassed to ask me for help?” He smirked, watching Revali's feathers puff up slightly. “Oh my Hylia, you're embarrassed to ask me for help!”
“Shut up.” Revali crossed his arm.
“Mipha loves ice skating and she loves going to zoos and aquariums.”
Revali's mouth fell open as he sputtered trying to figure out how to respond. Link had given him three potential date spots. He wanted to impress her but he also knew Zelda didn't know much more than he did. He grumbled, crossing his arms, “Zelda loves science and history museums, and she loves playing d&d, card and board games.”
“D&D? Is she more into sci-fi or fantasy?”
“Fantasy.” he paused, “Does Mipha like zoos or aquariums more?”
“Depends if the zoo has penguins or if the aquarium has a touch tank. I believe the Ruta aquarium has both penguins and a touch tank.” Link smirked watching Revali write it down while avoiding eye contact.
“There's a board game shop that does one shot d&d campaigns....” He huffed begrudgingly and added, “Her favorite flowers are silent princesses and her favorite color is cyan.”
“Lillies and turquoise. Mipha prefers tea to coffee. Green or white tea preferably but she also likes black teas with bergamot or floral notes. Loves fruit snacks, gummy bears and specifically pink starbursts. She loves swimming but good luck getting her out of the water.”
“Zelda loves coffee, her favorite is Gerudo coffee which she likes with cardamom, cinnamon and lots of sugar. However she likes any coffee with cinnamon. She loves a pumpkin spice latte, she would get them year round. She loves chocolate, dark and milk. She's not a big fan of white chocolate unless it's specifically on pretzels and salted on the outside as well. She loves volleyball but she is adamant that proper volleyball is played in the sand and has argued with multiple coaches about it. The coach at our middle school would roll into a ball until she clarified with them that it wasn't about the sand.”
“Of course she did.” He giggled, “Did you know that the life guards at the pool growing up always had Mipha's dad and uncle Muzu on speed dial cause they gave up trying to get her out. The Zora life guards couldn't even catch her.”
Revali let out a muffled laugh, “Okay that's pretty cute.” He puffed up slightly, “But this information doesn't mean I owe you anything.”
“Of course.” Link rolled his eyes, “However I think I'd take you naming your first born after me.”
“No.”
“Middle name? Cause it links the two together, eh- ooof” Link grunted as he was hit with a pillow, “ow.”
“Oh shut up, that didn't hurt.”
“Hey, that memory foam is no joke.”
He rolled his eyes then yelped as the pillow was returned with the same force, “Fucker!”
“You started it.”
Revali huffed as he flipped him off.
(a few days later
Link felt himself masking, he felt himself shutting down parts of himself. He didn't like doing it, it always felt wrong, but right now he didn't have a choice. He walked with purpose like he had at basic, he knew how to keep his stride. He moved like a machine, automatic and unthinking. He froze when he saw him.
Rhoam stood near the bus stop on the edge of campus, red hoodie pulled up over his head. He hummed to himself as if this were a normal day. As if he were just a stranger waiting for a bus. He saw Link and waved, “Your report please.”
Link nodded as he handed over the paper he printed. He was detailed even if most of the details were made up. Lots of logging times in the library, gen ed classes, the dorm building, and the dining hall. The times were specific but there were no room numbers, just vague enough he couldn't know exactly where she was. He'd followed Rhoam's template perfectly, Zelda even double checked his work to make sure. He knew he was giving him exactly what he wanted.
Rhoam nodded as he flipped through the pages, eyes hard scanning through the papers like they contained secrets to the universe. His face didn't show any emotion although occasionally he muttered under his breath. He turned his sharp gaze to Link, “What is her major?”
He started signing when Rhoam yanked out a pad and a pen handing it to him. Link stared down at the objects that had been set in his hands without permission or asking. He felt his jaw clench as he began writing, ‘undecided.’
Rhoam's face darkened, “Disappointing but gives me time. The gen eds have to be done anyways and it gives me time to convince her to go into law. Your check.” He took the pad of paper and the pen back then pulled the check from his wallet and handed it over. “Keep her on track.”
Link nodded as he signed, “You’re an asshole”
Rhoam nodded with a sweet condescending smile, “Yes of course. Until next time.”
Link turned walking away towards the dorm. He was grateful he and Zelda lived in the same building. It made it easier. He waited by the elevator and when it opened he felt his breath caught in his throat.
“Link.” She pulled him into a tight hug then looked him over, “Did he say anything.”
“Not anything we didn't expect from the answers we gave him.” He paused, “Also he doesn't know sign. I called him an asshole to his face and he thought I was saying good night or something.”
“You did that?” She looked somewhere between awe, surprise and amusement. “What if he had known?”
“He handed me a pen and paper as soon as I tried to sign.”
“I'm sorry”
Link tilted his head, “Why are you apologizing?”
“He was rude to you.”
“He was rude to me. You weren't, princess.”
Zelda’s cheeks blushed when she saw him sign the nickname. It started when he asked about her mum and why her Mama always called her little bird. She said it was because her mother's name was also Zelda as was every first born daughter for centuries as was tradition in the Hyrulean royal family. Her mum's family was the oldest surviving noble house. Had the monarchy not disbanded she'd have been crowned Princess Zelda Hyrule the thirty ninth. After he started calling her princess. “Still. You don't deserve to be treated that way. No one does but especially not you, my knight.”
He blushed then lifted her hand pressing a tender kiss to her knuckles, “Thank you.”
Zelda’s face flushed, “I-um... you're welcome.” She felt him lead her back into the elevator with the hand he kissed still firmly in his hand. She leaned down a little to rest her head on his shoulder as she let out a breath she didn't realize she was holding. She traced a scar along his thumb as she relaxed into him.
He hummed quietly in response, giving her hand a gentle squeeze as he rested his head against hers.
(friday)
“Are you going to tell me where we're going?” Zelda asked as she followed him through the parking garage.
“Nope.” He smirked, “It's a surprise.”
Zelda huffed although a smile still reached her lips, “You're not going to win.”
“We’ll see.” His face somehow getting more smug as he lifted his keys, the lights flashed on a forest green jeep as he walked to open the passenger side door for her.
“Oh now you're a gentleman.” She scoffed before breaking into giggles.
He rolled his eyes although his smile brightened as he moved to the driver's seat, “It will be worth it. I promise.”
Zelda giggled as she wondered where he was taking her.
He watched her face, they'd been driving for about an hour, grateful the place he'd found wasn't too far away from the city. He could practically see the gears moving in her head as he joined a line of cars. He slowed to a halt, he had hoped they'd beat the line in but it didn't look too bad.
“Link?”
“Yes?” He answered keeping his face as neutral as possible. Her eyes laser focused on his features as if she could find the answer to her questions written on his skin.
“What are we in line for?” She asked her voice sweet and chipper, as she gave him soft eyes.
He snorted, “You'll see in a bit.”
“But we're almost there!” She groaned, “You've already made me wait an hour!”
“Then another ten minutes certainly won't kill you.” He laughed.
“You're a rude, rude boy.” She grumbled as she turned her gaze back towards the line as she saw a billboard overhead. “You didn't?! Link!”
Link, grateful for the stand still as he looked at the girl next to him. Her eyes practically glowing as she began shaking in excitement. “I take it you figured out where we're going?”
“The olde Castle Town Renaissance fair!” She squeed, “oh I haven't been here since I was little! My mums and I used to go every year for my birthday!” She turned to look at him, her eyes shimmering as she let out a sniffle.
“Shit.” He glanced at her as the line moved forward. He kept his eyes on the road with his left hand on the wheel while his right dug for the tissue box in the console, “Is this too much? We don't have to go. I wasn't trying to make you cry! Where did I put the tissues?!” He scrambled as he stopped completely ignoring the honking behind him as he reached over to open the glove box and handed her the tissues.
Zelda took it as she laughed, “It's happy tears” she pulled out a tissue and dabbed at her eyes, “I wasn't expecting something so sweet. Did you know?”
“No. Actually. But I did pester Revali enough to get him to tell me you liked D&D and fantasy novels. I looked up stuff nearby and this popped up. I figured if you're technically a princess I'd treat you like one.” He rubbed the back of his neck before the honking grew louder. He turned his head back towards the road, seeing the giant space between him and the car in front of him, “I'm moving I'm moving! Hylia’s light, calm down. I was getting tissues for my girlfriend, you assholes.” He huffed, “Some people.”
Zelda wiped at her eyes, she felt her chest ache but not with pain. She'd dated people in the past. Most were short relationships based on puppy love or teenage hormones. When he had asked her out, she'd thought he was cute and that it would be fun. Yet part of her stayed on guard.
He has told her what her father had planned. He even said he would reject the offer if she was truly uncomfortable. However even with his honesty, doubt still lingered. A part of her still wondered if he had only said that to make his job easier. That asking her out had been more of a convenient way to keep tabs on her. She knew people thought she was appealing but most of the people who ever hit on her made her feel more like an object, a prize to be won or a challenge to be conquered. Hell even her Father made her feel like a possession, a thing to be covered not a child to be loved.
She felt something shift. Her eyes felt as if she'd finally removed a veil or a lens that had been in front of her face so long she hadn't even realized it was there. Her eyes widened as she finally allowed herself to truly see the young man next to her.
His blue eyes shone and crinkled in the corners, sparkling with amusement, mischief and joy. The sunlight seemed to enhance his natural gentle warmth as his smile reflected an earnest sincerity she didn't know even existed let alone could be directed at her. She felt her heart jump as her stomach buzzed. Am I falling for him?
“Zelda?”
“Hmmm?” She blinked, blushing as she realized that not only had she been caught staring but that they were parked in the lot.
“Ready?” He beamed brighter than she thought was even possible.
“Y-yes.” She said shyly.
She couldn't stop smiling as she walked in the gates, the smell of smoked turkey legs, garlic sausages, sauteed mushrooms, brown ale and popcorn as a cacophony of laughter, performers and musicians filled her ears. As she saw a sea of brightly colored costumes and happy faces.
“Come see the fire eater show! Daring deeds sure to delight!” A performer called from one of the stages.
“Bangers! Naked or dressed!” a vendor smirked at them, “You look like a young man who'd share a sausage with his lass.”
Zelda wheezed as Link's face burned bright red before grinning evilly “Who says I'm sharing?” She heard Link sputtering behind her as she walked towards the cart, “We'll take two. Actually, make that three. He's got quite the appetite, don't you dear?” She giggled at her boyfriend who was glaring at her.
“Naked or dressed, miss?” The vendor asked without missing a beat.
“I'll take mine dressed. Link? Would you like mustard and onions?” She asked sweetly, desperately trying not to laugh.
He nodded, still glaring although the sides of his mouth twitched. He pulled out his wallet as he handed the vendor the cash, his glare morphing into more of a pout. “Rude.” He signed as he grabbed the three sausages.
She cackled, throwing her head back before giving him a soft peck on the cheek, “You're cute when you blush.” She grabbed one of the sausages, “There's some picnic tables under the pavilion.” Her free hand found his as she pulled him towards a table closest to the nearby stage where some musicians were playing.
She sat down giggling as she saw he was still pouting, “I'm sorry.”
“You're definitely not sorry.” He huffed although she saw a smile on his lips.
“And you're not mad~” She teased, booping his nose.
“yeah yeah, suck your sausage”
“Ugh” She gasped in mock betrayal, “Is that any way for a knight to speak to his lady fair?”
“Fine.” He grinned as he lifted up his brat to her face, “Suck my sausage.” She kept full eye contact as she bit it in half, giggled as she chewed. He snorted loudly, almost falling out of his seat. “Fully doubled down on the bit.” He wheezed, his eyes twinkling as he looked at her. She looked a bit like a chipmunk from the oversized bite she'd taken, mustard smudged on her cheek and her face red from laughing. Hylia’s light, she's beautiful.
“Hit the target! Win a prize! Try your hand at Archery!” A voice called from one of the stands.
Zelda shook with excitement as she practically dragged him towards the stand. He laughed, smiling so bright his cheeks hurt but he couldn't bring himself to stop. “I didn't know you were interested in archery, princess?”
“I'm not. I'm quite terrible at it actually. However, that dragon plush is very cute.” She looked at him with soft pleading eyes as she pointed to a derpy looking white and blue dragon with a yellow mane, its eyes set in two completely different directions and its tongue stuck out leaving it in a constant blep.
“If that's what my lady wishes.” He bowed, kissing her knuckles before handing cash to the guy running the booth.
“You have three arrows. Fair warning, young Lord, you'll have to hit the bullseye to win the dragon.” The man smiled.
He nodded as he took the bow, he pulled the string back, frowning as he slowly returned the string to resting. He sighed as his fingers moved towards where the string was tied as he effortlessly undid the knot before pulling it taught and retying it.
Zelda blinked looking over at the man at the stall, “Is he allowed to do that?”
“I didn't even know you could do that.” He shrugged, too impressed to be bothered.
Link’s eyes stayed focused as he knocked an arrow. Zelda felt her cheeks flush as she watched his muscles flex straining just a touch as he pulled the bow to a full draw. The small cute boy now shifting with the discipline of a soldier. She heard him release a slow breath as he fired the first arrow.
The employee and her stared dumbstruck as they saw the arrow now deeply embedded in the target. The man reached for the dragon automatically when he saw Link almost instantly shoot the other two arrows each landing in the same spot.
Zelda stared wide eyed at Link as he handed the bow back to the man who handed him the dragon plush.“How did you?”
Link chuckled as he gave her the plushie, “My grandpas were both hunters. My maternal grandpa was a sheikah who thought guns were unsportsmanlike so only used a bow, which my paternal grandpa teased him about endlessly. However they both believed that a true hunter doesn't cause unneeded suffering to the animal he kills. So they both made sure we knew how to aim fast and well before they ever allowed us to come with them.”
“That's..... surprising.” She looked at him, her brows raised.
“On the contrary, it's common in many cultures around Hyrule. Take no more than you need from the earth, give back all you can sorta stuff.” He shrugged.
“No, not that. I just didn't picture you as a hunter. Similar to how I have trouble picturing you as a soldier.”
Link’s face looked saddened slightly, keeping his gaze towards his feet, “Is it because I'm small and look young for my age?” His voice wavered, smaller than she'd expect.
Zelda acted on instinct as she stopped and placed a hand on his cheek, “It's because you're so thoughtful and kind. I'm not used to it sometimes.” She freezes realizing how close they are, and where her hands were resting. Her heart thumped as she felt the little prickles of stubble on his cheeks. She started pulling her hand back but he stopped her, placing her hand on top of his. She felt her entire face heating as she leaned forward. He met her half way, his lips capturing herself gently.
Their first kiss was soft and slow. The kind of kiss that felt as if it brought the world to a halt just for them. They didn't know who finally broke the spell but when they pulled back they still felt the warmth on their lips as they gazed into each other's eyes.
They laughed as they walked back to Link’s car hand in hand. Their bag of goodies rested over Link’s shoulder while Zelda held a smaller bag of plushies he'd won for her. He smiled as he heard her rambling on about the shows they'd watched throughout the Fair. He caught a bit about the techniques behind sword swallowing before he was lost in her eyes again. The golden hour shined on behind her casting her in warm light as if she were the goddess Hylia herself brought down from the heavens just for him.
“Thank you.” She almost whispered, unable to meet his gaze.
“For what?” He laughed, he appreciated the sentiment, however seeing the joy on her face was more than enough for him.
“I don't think I could have asked for a better date.” She felt tears sting her eyes, “Now I'm a bit nervous that the date I have planned won't compare.”
He thumbed her tears away, “It helps I'm easy to please.”
She rolled her eyes, “Really now?”
“Mmmmh.” He leaned in to whisper in her ear, “All I need for a perfect date is you.”
She felt her heart squeeze. How does he say something so ridiculous and stupid with such sincerity?! From anyone else that would be sickeningly sweet but he's so earnest and kind and....I've fallen head over heels for him.
Zelda walked back to her dorm giggling like a school girl as she looked down at her collection of plushies. She didn't stop smiling as she opened the door.
“I see someone had a good time” Mipha couldn't help but grin as she saw the plushies. “Have fun at the Ren faire?”
“Wait you knew!” Zelda huffed, throwing one of the plushies at her, “And you didn't tell me!”
Mipha snorted, catching the plush, “I promised him I wouldn't say anything. But if he didn't tell someone he was going to physically combust he was so excited.”
Zelda smirked, “Well I guess I won't tell you what Revali's planning” She turned her back to her as she began carefully arranging the stuffies around her desk.
“Wait! He didn't tell me he was planning something!” Mipha blinked, jumping from her bed, “What is it?”
“Nope. My lips are sealed.” Zelda felt a smug smile as she watched Mipha let out a huff. “You’ll find out tomorrow.”
The Zora grumbled as she handed her back the plushie that her roommate had thrown at her, “Mean.”
“Hey alls fair and love and war.”
Chapter 5: A night in the woods
Chapter Text
“It's alright you know.” Link smirked as he pulled out of the parking garage.
“I know but I feel bad.”
“Princess, it's not your fault freshmen aren't allowed cars on campus or that my car’s a stick shift.” He moved his hand to give hers a squeeze, “I don't mind driving. Besides, you have the location on your phone so it's still a surprise.” He glanced at her mischief sparkling in his eyes as he looked back to the road, “So are you going to tell me what's in the heavy plastic tubs you had me load in my car?”
“Hey I helped!” She pouted, crossing her arms, “and no. It will ruin the surprise.” She let out a little huff, her pout turning smug as she finally got to give him some payback for making her wait in suspense.
“Oh okay I just thought I'd ask.” He said happily, humming to himself as he drove.
Zelda felt her eyes widen, “Wait, just like that. You're done? No more questions?”
“Nope”
“But.... aren't you curious?” She asked, poking his side.
“Yeah but I can wait.” His soft smile turned devilish at the corners, “I have patience. Unlike some people.”
“I don't like you.” She grumbled.
“You do too.”
“Nope. Not any more.” Zelda turned, keeping her gaze out the window.
He chuckled, “Well I guess I can just turn around at the next exit.” He felt her snap back around in her seat to look at him.
“You're insufferable.” She huffed but mirth trickled in her voice.
“So you're a masochist?”
“Rude! Rude boy!” She swatted his arm as she tried to hide her laughter
“Well excuse me, princess.” He snickered, “Also don't hit the driver.”
“Fine. I'll wait til we get there.”
He shook his head smiling, “How long is the drive?”
“About two hours according to the GPS.”
Link clicked his tongue as he tried to think of places about two hours from Castle Town. His thoughts were slightly interrupted by Zelda fiddling with the Bluetooth adapter in his car. He couldn't help the warmth as he heard her muttering softly to herself as she scrolled through her phone for the perfect song. SHE'S SO FUCKING CUTE!!!
Link perked up as he saw the exit signs along the road, they'd been on the road for the right amount of time so they clearly were getting closer to their destination. Each turn he watched for any attraction signs, although they were few and far between this far from the city. His brow furrowed as he tried to figure out what exactly she had planned.
Then he saw the sign for Great Hyrule Forest National Park and he felt himself vibrating with excitement. “We're going hiking in the national park?!”
“Nope.” She said before smiling brighter, “We're going camping in the national park.” She blinked as he pulled into a small gas station just a few miles away from their destination. She glanced at the gas gauge seeing it wasn't full but it didn't look like it needed to be filled up just yet.
Link unbuckled, turning in his seat before immediately crushing her in a tight hug. He peppered her face with kisses, “Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.”
“Y-you're welcome.” She pulled him into a kiss before holding him, “Mipha mentioned you and your family used to go camping a lot. She also said that if you didn't have friends you'd be a forest hermit.”
“I mean.....” He blushed scratching the back of his neck, “She's not wrong. I actually have my whole backpacking set up ready to go in my car at all times.”
Zelda shook her head, “In retrospect maybe this would have been better as a normal date than a surprise. It would have saved me a ton of time getting the equipment.”
“You didn't spend a ton of money buying stuff for this?” He couldn't help but worry even if she wanted to surprise him, the thought of her spending tons of money on equipment, especially equipment he already had stung. He was already calculating costs to pay her back when he felt her touch his arm.
“I borrowed most of it from some family friends who live around Castle town. I did buy a few things, I just want to point out that you bought the tickets, food, games and a decent amount of gifts for me at the Ren faire. When I asked about paying you back what did you say?’
“That it was a gift, the only thing I wanted was for you to have a good time.” He felt himself holding his tongue, “I know I said that but-”
“Nope.”
“What?” He felt his chest ache as he tried to process her words. It felt wrong in his brain. He cared about people. He loved her, not that he could even say that to her right now. Of course he paid for things for her. Granted he went out of his way for people in general, he just enjoyed doing it for her more. She may not have a title but as far as he was concerned she was a princess.
Yet something about her treating him that way made him wince. He knew that she did it out of care but it was hard to let her care. He felt tears prick his eyes. He tried to wipe them before she saw, but when she held his cheek he knew he'd been caught.
“Link? Are you okay? I didn't say anything to upset?” Zelda immediately felt her stomach twist with guilt. “Talk to me.”
His lip quivered as more tears streamed down his cheeks, “E-ever since my mom died I-I did everything I could to help my dad, my sister and my grandparents. When dad worked late I made dinner for my sister. I helped her with her homework. I helped my dad organize his pills when his hands were too shaky. Fuck I'm in college because it made my family happy.”
“I- was this too much?” She felt herself shrink, then his hand went to her shoulder giving it a reassuring squeeze before holding her again.
“No. You didn't do anything wrong, princess.” His voice was more firm than she thought possible. “I guess it's been a long time since I had someone care for me like this. It's overwhelming but please don't apologize for that. I'm happy you planned this and we're still going to go camping. I-” He looked at her face, her concerned expression, the softness in her eyes. She always felt like sunshine. Now he felt like he was stepping into the sunlight after being stuck in darkness. The warmth and light were a welcome relief but also overwhelming to the senses. “Thank you so much.” He sobbed in her arms.
Zelda just held him, rubbing small circles on his back. She hummed the lullaby her mum used to sing to her, as she processed his words. He is always so selfless and strong. He'd give his shirt off his back to someone without a second thought. He doesn't know what to do when someone does the same for him.
He felt embarrassed, crying into her shirt as she held him in his car, while they were parked at some random gas station. However the tears were too strong, flowing like a dam had finally broken. Years of doing everything he could to lift the weight off of his family's backs, of smiling for them when they were sad, of being the steady one during the storm, crashed down in waves as he finally allowed himself to fall apart.
She held him like she was a life boat. He was boneless, hiccuping and sniffling. Her shirt was soaked with tears and she couldn't find any reason to care. She just ran her hands through his hair til his breathing evened out. Only moving slightly to grab the tissues from the glove box. He pulled away grabbing the tissues to blow his nose.
“Sorry about your shirt” He signed, too drained for words. He looked at her his face puffy and damp from crying. Yet he looked lighter, happier almost. He smiled at her, not a bright laughing one like at the Ren faire, this smile was soft, raw and open.
She felt her own eyes sting, “Thank you for telling me this.”
He nodded although he frowned as he looked at her shirt.
“It's fine Link, don’t-” Her words died on her tongue as she watched him lift his shirt, her breath hitched as she saw his lean muscles and scars. She caught the ones just below his pecs recognizing them immediately from all the pride events she'd gone to with her moms as a child. She saw where his light chest hair trailed down his stomach. She jumped a bit as he gently poked her. She looked up catching the blush on his face.
“Are you alright?” He looked a little nervous as he handed her his shirt.
“I'm fine.” She squeaked a little too quickly, “Um thank you.”
“I can turn around.” He signed before his face burnt red as she pulled off the short sleeve shirt revealing a light blue sports bra. He watched as she slid his shirt over her head before adjusting it down. It wasn't that big on her as they were about the same size, however it hung looser as his shoulders were broader.
She felt her body relax as she could smell just a hint of his aftershave on the collar, “You realize you're never getting this back right?” She smirked.
He rolled his eyes, “Whatever you want, princess.”
Link raised an eyebrow, he stood next to the tent he just finished setting up to see his girlfriend crouched down in front of the firepit swearing. “Need some help?”
“Yes. I've been trying to light it for ten minutes.” She sighed, handing him the lighter.
“I'll take a look, could you grab my backpack? It's in the tent. I think I might still have a few fight starters in there.” He examined the firewood like a doctor, sticking his hands by the embers adjusting them as he added fresh kindling. “You stacked the logs right, but I think you didn't use enough kindling or you packed it too tight. Not bad though for your first time.”
Zelda walked out of the tent about to quip about her very well educated instructor that was a five minute YouTube video, however all thought died in her throat as she saw his back muscles flexing as he bent to grab another log, her eyes dropped to admire how well his shorts fit him. Sweet Hylia I must have it bad if cargo shorts are doing it for me.
“Enjoying the view?” He chuckled, not even bothering to turn around.
She blushed, as she remembered what he was trying to do and placed his backpack next to him. “Sorry.”
He snorted, “Never said I was mad about it. You've got a pretty cute butt yourself.”
Zelda felt her ears burning more than her attempt at a fire ever did, watching him stick his whole arm in his backpack before pulling out a small ziplock with what looked like small cubes of sawdust and cotton balls. She watched him grab a sawdust cube as he flattened and pulled apart one of the cotton balls before wrapping it loosely around the cube. He set it in the middle of the large kindling pile, before carefully lighting it. He breathed carefully and gently on the flames. She watched in awe as the fire started to grow.
He hummed not stepping away til he heard the larger twigs pop, “She should be good to go.” He rolled his shoulders before getting up.
“She?” Zelda bemused as she watched him walk back to his jeep to grab more supplies.
“All fire comes from Din, she gave Hylia the spark of life and creation and the warmth to keep them safe.” He said wistfully, “Treat her with reverence and she will never let you go cold. At least that's what my grandpas always told me.”
“The sheikah one?”
“I mean technically they were both skeikah. My mom's dad was full blooded, and grew up around Kakariko. My dad's dad was I think half? Quarter? One of those. He grew up in Hateno. They both served in the army, assigned to the same platoon. They became fast friends. They went their separate ways, married, had kids, but still sent each other letters now and then. My parents were college sweethearts, they had both visited each other's families but it wasn't until the wedding day that my grandpas realized that their old friend was their kid’s new in-law.” He snorted, “According to my dad, they both cheered like mad men at the end of the ceremony.”
“That's very sweet.” She stood, walking towards him as she grabbed the folding chairs from the tub, “Did you do anything with your grandmas?”
Link grin brightened, “Tons, they made sure I knew how to cook. I remember my Grammy Ulrira told me every time I helped her cook that the key to someone's heart is through their stomach and if I ever wanted to get married I'd better get my ass in the kitchen. She was an excellent baker and taught me everything she knew. Granny Uli used to work at her family's restaurant as a child, she taught me how to hold a knife, dice, slice, chop, saute. However because one was more of a chef and one was more of a baker they absolutely hated cooking together. Every holiday they each got their own half of the kitchen.”
“Pffffffffffffft, it got that bad?”
“Listen, one of them worked in a restaurant almost all her life and the other came from a family of sailors. When those two got into an argument in the kitchen the whole house heard it and learned at least one new swear. Granted most of it was good fun and to keep away anyone looking to sneak something before dinner.”
“Once winter break comes you should make me something sometime.”
“I can make you something when we get back to the dorms. I have a small portable induction burner I keep in a laptop bag in my room.”
Zelda snorted, “How did one of the RAs not get you for that?”
“Because Impa is too busy dealing with idiots smoking in the dorms to care and is easily bribed with rice balls.”
“Rice balls? You have a rice cooker too?”
“And a crockpot, an electric grill, a waffle maker and a toaster oven.”
Zelda shook her head, “Only you could manage to somehow fit and hide a whole kitchen in their dorm. Wait, are you why your whole floor constantly smells like cinnamon rolls?”
“Oh yeah, I use those canned cinnamon rolls to make bread pudding for the team to carbo load for practice and games. Plus coach Daurk says it's good for morale although I think that's mostly because he has a Goron sized sweet tooth.” He paused as he looked at the giant pillow topped air mattress Zelda had clearly bought for their camping excursion, “I see you're more of a glamper.”
“Just because we're sleeping in the woods doesn't mean we have to give up on all the luxuries of society.” She huffed playing up her posh accent.
“Princess I don't even think it will fit in the tent. Do we even have a pump?” He scanned the box for the dimensions, comparing it to the tent.
“It happens to have a built-in air pump.” Zelda crossed her arms, clearly expecting that question and quite proud to have taken that into consideration. So when she saw him clearly holding in a laugh, she glared, “What exactly is so funny?”
“Are you sure you want to know?” He asked as he bit his tongue desperately trying to keep a straight face.
“Obviously.” She blinked as he pointed to a small side panel on the back of the box. She scanned it, her smugness dying in two words, outlet required. “I hate you so much right now.”
He finally broke out laughing as she glared at him, “This is karma for the sausage cart the other day.”
“Hey the sausage cart was funny and it didn't mean we had to sleep on the ground!” She defended.
He managed to catch his breath a bit, “Did you find this by camping gear or by the pillows and blankets?”
“the ones by the camping gear didn't look as comfy.” She pouted, as he broke out into another fit of laughter, “It's not funny!”
“Fuck.” He took a deep breath trying to calm a little but the minute he looked at her pout he let out a snicker. “You're so cute.” He grinned as he pulled her into his arms, he leaned his on her shoulder as he was too short to rest it on top of her head. He pressed a kiss to her cheek, smiling against her skin as he saw the blush had reached her ears, “Better?”
Zelda couldn't remember exactly what had made her upset. As soon as she felt his strong arms wrapped around her, while she wore his shirt and his strong bare chest on full display except where it was now pressed against her. She turned resting her head on his shoulder, her nose pressed against his neck.
“Are you sniffing me?” His chest shook with amusement, arms still tight around her, holding her gently.
“Shush, you smell good.” She mumbled against his neck before peaking one of her eyes open to look at him, “We don't have to sleep on the ground so we?”
“I have three other sleeping pads in my jeep.” He let out a chuckle as he felt her pout, “What's wrong princess?”
“Nothing”
“I can literally feel you trying to bury yourself into me and you're hiding your face again.” He shook his head in amusement as he felt her mumble something against his shoulder. “Sorry, didn't catch that.”
She froze slightly before lifting her face away from his shoulder, “I....wanted to cuddle.”
Link felt his chest warm and his face blushed, “I-I’ll figure it out. Why don't you go get the hot dogs from the cooler? I set it on the picnic table.”
She raised an eyebrow at him, “What are you up to?”
“That's for me to know and you to find out, princess” He winked as he grabbed his backpack and headed towards his jeep.
“It's quite rude to keep a lady guessing, Sir Wilde.”
“I promise it won't take very long.” He called as he climbed into the back hopping over the seats.
She shook her head as she watched him digging around in his car, she popped a marshmallow in her mouth. He's ridiculous, what is he even looking for? Climbing around in there like a bokoblin. She saw his silhouette shoot up with excitement only to hit his head. She snorted as she heard a string of curses. He has no right to be so charming. It's unfair.
He returned grinning like an idiot holding a bag of stuff, “I shall make you a bed for a queen.”
She bit her lip, “um Link.”
“Yes, princess?”
“Where's the nearest bathroom?”
“I think we passed an outhouse on the walk up.” He watched her disgusted face, “Unless you'd prefer I teach you how to dig a shit hole.”
“Outhouse it is!”
She groaned as she made her way back to camp. “I think I smelled the ghost of a thousand farts in there. Also there wasn't any soap.”
“You’ll survive. Here” He tossed her a small bottle of hand sanitizer. “Now come on, I wanna show you our beds for tonight.”
She squeezed a large amount of hand sanitizer as she followed him. Beds? But I wanted cuddles.
He opened the tent flap bowing as he pointed to a large (although noticeably smaller than the one she bought) air mattress with a large sleeping bag as a comforter and some pillows already set out. “What do you think?”
“It's wonderful but I thought you said beds?”
Link smirked as he turned, pointing to a hammock tied up between two trees, “I figured you deserved a choice-”
She silenced him with a kiss. “Thank you.”
“Anything for you, princess.” He pressed his forehead to hers as his stomach growled, “As much as I would enjoy kissing you, I am actually really hungry.”
Zelda giggled, “I suppose we can stop for dinner. But after you and I have a date with that hammock.”
“Yes ma'am.”
“This is perfect.” Zelda sighed snuggling against his chest, her hand absentmindedly tracing his scars. “Is this comfortable for you?”
“You don't see me complaining.” He smiled softly.
“I meant this.” She ran her finger along the scar under his pec before stopping, “I know some people are a bit self conscious of scars in general let alone ones from top surgery.”
“So I was right that you clocked me.” He raised an eyebrow at her.
“I-I mean I didn't at first. I had a suspicion. Not that you don't pass, honestly you're just stupidly wonderful to look at. I mean... I don't care about gender. I just-” She stumbled only to hear him snickering.
“Princess, I was teasing.” He gently carded his fingers through her soft hair, “But no it doesn't bother me when you trace my scars. Especially not those ones. At least those can be talked up as something inspiring.” He pointed at a few odd splotches along his stomach, “I got these when I decided to make bacon without a shirt on.” He pointed at his hands, “Most of these I got from learning how to cook or working in the mess hall while I was out on deployment.” He pointed at the long angry looking one on his leg, “That I got fixing a fence on a coop for one of my neighbors back home.”
“How?”
“I was putting up some barbed wire to keep foxes out and it turns out that the coop wasn't just chickens, they had two swans which are in many ways just geese with a better pedigree.” He sighed, smiling, “They are evil and I hate them so.”
Zelda giggled, “You're ridiculous.” She snuggled closer, “My mama is also trans so I try to ask in case.” She rubbed the stubble on his cheek, “Speaking of, when were you going to call her? I know you've been putting it off.”
“We can call her when we get back tomorrow.” He gulped slightly.
“She's not going to bite you.” She looked up at him, “How are you more scared of her than my father?”
“Because your father is an asshole. I only give a shit that he thinks I'm working for him. He doesn't have to like me. Your Mama is important to you and I want to make a good impression.”
“She'll adore you.” Zelda yawned, “I know I do.”
“Would you like to sleep here or on the bed?”
“I'm comfy here.”
“I'm asking because I need to pee so you're going to have to move either way.”
“Nooooo.”
“Princess, please.”
“But you're warm.”
“Yeah and it's going to get very warm then very cold real quick if you don't get up.”
“Fine.” Zelda groaned as she climbed out of the hammock.
“I'll be right back.” He gave her a peck on the cheek before bolting off towards the outhouse.
She shivered a little realizing how cold the night air has gotten. Maybe we should move to the tent. She yawned as she walked into the tent to get ready for bed.
She heard Link arriving as she laid down, “Cuddles. Now.”
“Let me get my shoes off at least.” He rolled his eyes at her groan, he bent down, sliding off his boots.
“By Hylia, Mipha wasn't kidding.” Zelda pinched nose as she scrambled to get up and tossed the can of foot spray towards him. “Outside. Spray them and your feet.”
Link snorted, “Yes Ma’am.” He picked up the can and walked back out of the tent.
Zelda crawled back in the bed, her face underneath the sleeping bag for safety when heard him walk back in. “Is it safe?”
“Yes.” He giggled as he slid next to her, then let out a contented sigh as she immediately curled back against him. “Thanks for this again...... I haven't really gotten to be able to do something like this in a long time.”
“You deserve nice things too.” She muttered in his chest as sleep, “Let me take care of you.”
He pulled her closer, holding her tight as he felt himself relax completely for the first time in years.
Zelda woke to the sound of birds. The smell of campfire smoke, sweat and aftershave filled every breath and she couldn't get enough. She felt warm despite the morning chill. Her sleepy green eyes opened to see his neck, as she lifted her head she realized that some time in the night she'd moved from cuddling him to laying directly on top of him. She pressed a soft kiss to the bottom of his chin, smiling as she saw him shift.
His bright blue eyes opened slowly, glancing around as if he wasn't awake enough to know exactly where he was. He bent his neck to look at the weight that was resting on him and his breath caught in his throat. He saw Zelda smiling, still snuggled on top of him. Her normally neat blonde hair was ruffled from sleep, some bits standing on end from static. He let out a small oof as she sat up a bit to rest her chin on her hands. His eyes noticed that she was still wearing his shirt as the words tumbled out of his mouth, “Hylia’s tits you're beautiful.”
Zelda snorted as she buried her face in his neck, “Good morning to you too.”
“Wait.” He lifted his hand then poked her gently, “Oh, fuck this isn't a dream.”
“You dream about me?” She smirked despite her jackhammering heart, walking her fingers up his chest just to make him squirm.
He nodded as best he could from his position as he lifted his hand, “Yes.”
She grinned proudly as she moved to whisper in his ear, “I-I dream about you too.” She felt her bashfulness return full force as she practically jumped up, “I-umm need to pee.”
He looked at her bemused as if he didn't fully trust he was awake. “Okay.”
Zelda hurried off toward the outhouse desperately wishing she had slate service because never wanted to text Mipha more in her life. Half because she wanted to know how her date to the water park went and the other because she needed to tell someone about all the feelings swirling around in her chest for fear it would explode if she didn't. I haven't even dated him that long? Why am I so flustered? We literally just cuddled, it's not like we did anything. Ugh how am I falling this hard and fast for him? I need to get a hold of myself. Especially if we call Mama. If I'm scared, he'll have to wait to meet her in person.
She paused checking the calendar on her phone. I mean she will be coming next weekend........and while she would prefer a phone call he can at least email her a decent amount of the information. Plus I don't have to have that awkward phone call after where she's pretending she isn't probing me for questioning about our love life. And Link already uses sign most of the time anyway, I don't want to overwhelm him too much with a phone call.
Chapter 6: Parents' weekend
Chapter Text
__________later that day in Gerudo town__
Urbosa sat at her office, her readers perched on her nose as she looked over too many tabs. She had two different files open, one on resources for people with disabilities near Hateno, a few articles going over veteran healthcare coverage and laws over what is considered deliberate denial of care. None of it too specific for now as she was still waiting for the call.
The other much larger file was a building stalking and harassment case against Rhoam. The fake contract was very damning evidence however restraining orders were difficult to get. Especially when the other party was just smart enough to avoid anything beyond technically legal albeit morally bankrupt. As despite the insanity of it, it wasn't technically illegal to hire a bodyguard to protect someone without their knowledge.
She glanced at her email for what felt like the millionth time when a new one popped to the top of the screen. She opened it immediately.
From: Lincoln Benjamin Wilde ([email protected])
To: Urbosa Aziz ([email protected])
Subject: disability accommodation assistance/legal advice
Urbosa felt a smile grace her lips as she grabbed her coffee. Well this just got interesting. Look who finally decided to reach out. At least he gave me his full name. Social media, don't fail me now.
Urbosa typed his name into the search engine, her eyes widened as the first thing that popped up was a Hateno hometown hero's page. She clicked as she read it skeptically
Lance Corporal Lincoln Benjamin Wilde of the Hyrule States Marine Corps. He's a marine, well at least he should be able to keep her safe. Captain of his high school soccer team, currently attending Hyrule State University. Volunteer work? Sweet Hylia, it's three whole pages?! No wonder he has a home town hero's page. Alright picture. Picture. Show me a picture.
Urbosa blinked as she saw his photo. That's a child. That is a little baby boy. That cannot be what he looks like now. There is no way that's a current photo of him. Alrighty back out, what's that photo sharing app that Zelda says all her friends are on? Insta something? Ah here it is- oh. Wow he doesn't look any older? How old is he? Twenty??! That baby faced kokiri is a grown ass man? And a Marine? Wait I see pronouns in his bio, he/him and a trans flag. Okay that makes more sense. Is there anything else? He's twenty and barely uses social media? Normally I’d be thrilled but I need more information.
“Trying to social media stalk your daughter's boyfriend?”
Urbosa spun in her chair blocking the monitor. “Buliara, what are you doing here?”
“Last time I checked, you invited me to lunch with you.” The smugness didn't leave her voice as she leaned against the doorway of the office.
“Oh it's lunch time already. Heh. Where did the time go?” Urbosa set her readers down on the table, “Let's go.”
“So were you snooping to help him or just see if he's good enough for your little bird?”
“I can do both.” She muttered defensively.
Buliara let out an amused huff, “So just snooping, anything interesting?”
“Apparently he's a pillar of his community.” Urbosa sighed as the embarrassment settled in, “A sweet trans man who despite looking like he shouldn't even have a learner's permit is also a lance corporal in the Marines- Will you please stop laughing.”
“Pffffffffffffft” Buliara held her sides desperately trying to catch her breath, “Oh I don't know what's funnier the fact that you're essentially looking for dirt on another trans person or-”
“It's not a trans thing! He's dating my daughter! I’m just trying to protect my little bird!” Urbosa defended while also desperately wondering if there was a nearby hole she could throw herself down.
“As I was saying. I don't know If the transvestigation is funnier or that both Zeldas fell in love with a trans Marine in college. Which is odd that it somehow happened again.”
“Har har. You're hilarious.” Urbosa sighed, “And I never said she was in love with him.”
Buliara raised an eyebrow, “No but it's what scares you.”
“You really could stand to be wrong more often.”
“Come on, you're better than this.....you know history isn't going to repeat itself, right?”
Urbosa grumbled as they took their usual table at the café, “I know that she's not under the same pressure her mum was to marry Rhoam, I know that she doesn't have the same health problems as her mum, and I shouldn't assume he's going to hurt her.... I guess everything is changing so much. And I'm so proud of her and I trust her completely. I guess I just don't really know what to do with myself. She's grown up now and I guess that makes me feel useless.”
“Do you feel useless or do you think you're useless and that makes you feel something else?”
“It's bad enough I get this from my actual therapist.” She huffed, “I think she doesn't need me and that makes me feel sad. I spent so much time taking care of her that I guess I don't really know what to do with myself.”
“Well, what did you used to do? I do remember that you had somewhat of a life before your daughter. Maybe look through some old hobbies, journal, and finally try getting back out in the dating game.”
“I can't. I've already had the best. Nothing else will ever compare.” She sipped her water, “Besides it's not like you've been playing the field since you lost your wife.”
“Touché.” Buliara sunk a little in her chair, “I wasn't trying to push you to do anything you're not ready for Bosa, I just want you to be happy. Or at least get some action so you'll chill out before you scare your daughter's boyfriend back to Hateno.”
“No promises.....” She opened her email on her phone, copying the email’s contents to a Google doc. “She has said he has been very good to her. Although I'll find out during parent's weekend.”
“That poor little voe.” Buliara sighed into her coffee.
_________parents weekend_____________
Zelda smiled, holding Link’s hand partly to ground him, partly to preventing from climbing up one of the trees to hide. “Is your family coming?”
He shook his head, “They want to but it's a long drive. Usually I visit them.”
“Well maybe I'll come with you next time.”
He smiled softly as he lifted her hand to kiss it. “It would be my honor princess.”
“So Little bird, are you going to introduce me to your little voe?”
“Mama!” Zelda let go of his hand before wrapping her arms tightly around her mom. “I missed you so much!”
“I missed you too, my little bird.” Urbosa held the girl tightly in her arms, before looking over at the young man. How the fuck is he smaller in person? She was about to walk over when a small blur launched itself at him.
“haa!” Link yelped, barely steadying himself as he caught sight of the tiny Zora that was now resting in his arms.
“Link!! I missed you! Are you going to hang out with me and Mipha today?” Sidon grinned a thousand watt smile at him.
“Sidon!” Mipha called as she ran over, “What did we tell you about running off like that?”
“I didn't run off, Link is here. You said it's s’okay so long as I was with someone I know. And I know Link” He beamed proudly at his logic.
“Oh my goddess, Mipha, is this your baby brother?” Zelda cooed as the little Zora happily jumped into her arms, “Well aren't you a cutie?”
Mipha laughed, “Yes, that's Sidon... he's very sweet and sometimes gets a bit too excited.”
“I remember when you used to do that to me whenever your mum and I would meet up at the park. You'd run as fast as your little legs would take you.” Urbosa smiled which only increased as Zelda blushed. She turned to the Zora girl and waved, “You must be Mipha. It's a pleasure to meet you.”
“It's nice to meet you as well!” Mipha waved before attempting to retrieve her little brother who upon realizing what was happening immediately jumped back onto Link and refused to let go.
“Link, we'll get to spend time together right?” The little Zora pouted.
Link chuckled softly and nodded, “We will tomorrow. I promise.”
“Pinky promise?” He asked, lifting up his little finger.
Link nodded as he lifted up his own. “Now go back with your sister, and maybe if you're good Revali will take you flying with him and Mipha.”
Mipha shot him a dirty look, Revali was stronger than most Rito, and while he could easily carry both Zora siblings in the air. Little Sidon, like most small children, had a propensity for always being just a tad sticky. Which would drive the Rito absolutely nuts especially with the little Zora’s grip strength. It also meant that he would insist on joining them whenever they tried to be alone. Mipha carefully scooped Sidon. “Say goodbye to Link. Because when we get back later he's going to be D. E. A. D. after Revali and I K. I. L. L. him.”
“Bye!” He smiled brightly waving as they headed back towards their dad who despite being across the quad was easily spotted from sheer size.
“What was that all about?” Zelda grinned knowing full well Link never started things with Revali; only finished them.
“Revali said by the end of the weekend he'd replace my number two spot of Sidon’s favorite people. So I thought I'd help. Also he's been teasing me all week when I returned from our camping date without my shirt.”
“Mipha has also been teasing me about wearing your shirt back to the dorm.”
“And why exactly were you wearing his shirt, little bird?” Urbosa asked as she towered over them.
“Oh umm”
“Her shirt got wet and stained so I let her borrow mine.” Link signed quickly.
Urbosa looked between the two of them, Zelda’s cheeks were slightly pink while Link looked more uncomfortable than embarrassed. That.... wasn't the reaction I expected.... “That was nice of you. Alright, how about we go out to eat?”
“There’s an all you can eat sheikah restaurant not far from campus.” Zelda suggested as she moved to hold Link’s hand, “it's one of the few places that can fill him.” She giggled, poking his side.
“Hey! you've been eating more too since volleyball practice started.”
“Yes but you once beat coach Daurk at a buffalo wing eating competition.”
“Okay....so maybe I eat more than a normal Hylian”
“Understatement of the year.” She smirked.
Link rolled his eyes but his smile didn't falter.
Urbosa watched, not judging, just observing. Her job as a lawyer meant she had to get very good at reading people's body language. She looked for the signs of distress or discomfort, scanning how they stood, how they held their shoulders and where they held their gaze. She was surprised at how relaxed they were, although part of her was still cautious. We'll see how he acts when we're alone.
The Little Kakariko buffet was slammed with families visiting for parent's weekend. However their small party of three managed to get seated fairly fast. Zelda smiled as she watched Link's eyes staring down the buffet line as they were led to the table. They'd come here for a few dinner dates with him as well as a few times after volleyball practice.
“I can order your drink if you want to go get your food.”
He turned looking slightly embarrassed, “I can order for myself”
“Link, it's okay.” She reassured him gently. “Go get your food, but if you take all the coconut shrimp again I'm stealing some from your plate.”
He chuckled, giving her a peck on the cheek, “As you wish, princess.” He sped toward the buffet like a man on a mission.
“Princess hmm?” Urbosa smirked as she watched her daughter shrink under her gaze.
Zelda suddenly found the table very interesting, “I mentioned the old royal family connection once and he ran with it. I called him my knight. Although I think after he took me to the Ren Faire, the pet names stuck.”
“He took you to the Ren faire?” Urbosa felt her worries soften slightly.
“He apparently bargained with Revali to give him ideas for the perfect date. He mentioned D&D and fantasy novels, Link stayed in theme. He didn't even know I had any special connections with it. I may have cried a bit. I was so happy.”
“You really are your mum’s daughter. She cried the first time I bought her flowers.”
“She cried every time you got her flowers.” Zelda chuckled although she got a little quiet as she seemed to think.
Urbosa's smile faltered slightly, “She told me when I first gave them to her that she never thought anyone would ever give her flowers. So I made sure she always had some. She was actually why I learned to garden.”
“I-I didn't know that.” Zelda felt her heart ache with longing and happiness.
“Some parts of our relationship are harder to talk about than others.” Urbosa admitted then quieted as she saw the waiter approaching. They ordered their drinks as they fell into silence. It wasn't uncomfortable but it was tense. Urbosa felt her sister's words echoing in her head. What if she is mine?
“Mama-”
“Zelda-” However the Gerudo woman was soon pulled out of her thoughts as she saw Link walking back with three plates stacked on his arms each a towering mountain. “Golden goddesses above.”
“Yep. That's what I said.” Zelda smiled, sipping her iced tea without even bothering to turn around.
Urbosa watched in a mix of horror and amazement as he expertly set the plates down. Zelda unfazed immediately grabbed a rice ball off his plate, making direct eye contact with him as she ate it.
He chuckled as he sat down, “First my sausage, now my balls?”
“Link!” She blushed deeply, glaring at him, “My mother is literally right there!”
“Did you know your daughter is a food thief?”
Urbosa snorted, “Her mum was the same way.”
“Do not encourage him.” Zelda groaned.
“Too late.”
“And with that I'm walking away.” Zelda moved away from the table but Link gently grabbed her wrist. “Yes, Sir Rude?” She scoffed although a smile played on her lips.
“You have a little something on your face.”
“Oh where?” She wiped her mouth on her hand.
He leaned up and kissed her, smirking proudly as he watched the blush creep up to her ears, “There.”
Zelda stood slack jawed, eyes darting toward Urbosa who had a hand over her mouth, the crinkle of her eyes gave away that she was smiling. Link for his part just hummed quietly to himself as he unrolled his silverware, a smug smile bright on his lips. “You're insufferable.”
“then suffer.”
When Urbosa laughed Zelda went to get her food. An awkward silence followed. She saw him staring at his food but not eating it, he was waiting. She cleared her throat, “So I have made some progress on your father's case. I believe we might be able to file for a deliberate denial of care. I had to file one before for Zelda's mum about a month after we got married. A military spouse gets the same benefits but our insurance was less than thrilled about following through. I also know some ways to irritate them into doing their jobs.” She watched the relief on his face but sadness remained. “How is your dad?”
Link’s face twitched, “Better now. He seemed happier in our last video call. I just hate that it feels like it comes at her expense.” He looked up at Urbosa, “I feel like a monster for putting her at risk.”
“Think.” Urbosa corrected.
“What?”
“Monster isn’t a feeling, You think it comes at her expense and you think you're a monster. You feel something else.”
“I feel ashamed. I hate giving him anything, even false information about her. I hate that I even had to resort to this to help my family. I hate that I fe- think I'm putting her in more danger. Especially after she planned a whole camping trip for me and let me fall apart because of it.” He saw Urbosa's confused and curious expression, “I gave her my shirt because I was so overwhelmed that she planned that trip for me that I sobbed on her shirt.”
Urbosa felt her heart ache. As she looked over at him she recalled a date she had with her Zelda. That same fear of hurting someone she loved because of circumstances she wasn't able to control. Granted in her case it was because she knew Zelda was already promised to Rhoam at the time. She remembered thinking she was a problem and in many ways she was. However, her Zelda had told her before her passing that she had been her ticket to freedom and happiness. She swallowed heavily as she looked at the small baby faced young man catty-cornered from her. “I think you are far too hard on yourself. The circumstances of how you met are definitely odd but you both seem happy together.”
“I love her.” He confessed barely able to hold her gaze.
A silence bloomed from his words. Nostalgia sat heavy on her shoulders as she recalled her wife. The ache stretched as she recalled her little bird’s first day of school, then looked at the young man. Golden goddesses above, I can’t tell if this boy is a gift or punishment. My little bird really does have her mum’s taste. Fuck. Urbosa shook her head letting out a soft laugh “I know.” She reached around one of his mountains of food and held his arm, “Let her love you too......Let her take care of you. I know I always struggled to let my Zelda do that too. My little bird is as strong as her mother, maybe....maybe even stronger. So let her love you. Even if it scares you. I regret every day I didn't.” Urbosa felt the tears in her eyes but her smile never faltered. She stood letting out a deep shaky breath. Yet she felt lighter than she had in years, she dabbed at her eyes with a napkin before walking out towards the buffet line like nothing happened.
Their brunch continued with Link getting up two more times much to Urbosa's increasing horror. Zelda, for her part, didn't actually get up again, perfectly content to just pick off Link’s plates while he pretended to be annoyed. Urbosa ended up eating about three plates as her brain tried to settle on what exactly she was feeling. Her eyes stared at her daughter teasing her boyfriend, who rolled his eyes but his smile held a deep warmth.
She felt proud, laced with melancholic nostalgia. She knew her daughter was a smart, capable woman who had someone who respected her. However, seeing them brought back old memories that made her chest ache. My darling, oh I wish you could see her now. Our little bird’s taking flight. In her distracted state she hadn't noticed that the attention was turned back to her.
“Mama? You in there?” Zelda waved her hand in front of her face.
Urbosa blinked, “Oh sorry. Feeling a little wistful today.” She paused, noticing it was just the two of them, “Please tell me he isn't getting more food.”
“No, I think he decided to take pity on them today.” She smiled, “He went to pay.”
“I was planning on covering it”
“Link likes to cover it because it technically means Father paid for it, since he is the one who signs his checks.” She said as she stood as they walked towards the door.
Urbosa snorted, “Okay that's kinda funny.”
“Is that approval? Auntie is going to love that.” Zelda smirked watching the irritation form on her Mama's face.
“Do not give my little sister more fuel.”
Zelda giggled, “She’s not that bad.”
“She's been teasing me about empty nest syndrome since I dropped you off.” Urbosa scoffed.
Zelda shrunk a bit, her eyes on the floor, “You've been okay by yourself?”
Urbosa pulled her into a tight hug, “I'm fine. Trust me I've been bugging your auntie Buliara just as much as she's been bugging me. You don't have to worry about me.” Zelda bit her lip still feeling guilty so she just hugged her tighter, “I'm a big girl. I'll be alright.”
“I just want you to be happy too. I know that's what mum always wanted for you.”
Urbosa felt that nostalgic squeeze. The ache that came from the place in her heart her wife lived. She looked at her daughter’s face, an almost exact copy of her mother's, a gift Urbosa would never stop cherishing. “I know. And I'm working on it.”
Zelda checked her phone when she felt a buzz.
Myknight❤️: too crowded inside. Sensory overload. I'm a bit down the street. 😘
Pwincess: K. I'm going to use the bathroom and meet you outside.
Myknight❤️: enjoy your pee 😘
Pwincess: 🙄
Zelda shook her head at her phone. She bit her lip, she didn't want to lie to him. However if she didn't talk to Urbosa about this she was going to explode.
“Did he leave?” Urbosa asked with a hint of unease.
“Sensory overload. He's outside down the street.” She watched her Mama's features relax as she let out a sigh. You can do this. Just ask. She's not going to dismiss you. “Mama, when did you know you were in love with mum?” The words fell out of her mouth and despite standing in a crowded restaurant, she swore she heard a pin drop.
Of course, why would she not say that? Goddesses or not, when I die, one of you bitches is going to getting a fucking ear full. Urbosa let out a noise somewhere between a sigh, a groan and a laugh. I planned for so much but not for her dating someone I actually like. She rubbed small circles in her daughter's back, “I knew when I first brought her flowers, she sobbed and I thought I screwed up. So I just held her until she could speak again. We talked for hours after that, just resting there. At that moment, despite being far from Gerudo town, I felt at home. I felt absolutely insane. We hadn't been dating very long, she was technically engaged but I was in love all the same.”
Zelda’s brow furrowed, “I didn't know you and mum dated before she was married.”
Urbosa looked nervous as she answered, “Your mum was promised to Rhoam well before I met her. He was a friend of your grandfather who believed in maintaining noble bloodlines. Your mum didn't have much freedom until college. We kept our relationship hidden for a long time even though we knew of her engagement.....and although I'm not particularly proud of it, into her marriage as well.”
“Oh.” Zelda said softly as she thought back through her childhood as suddenly all the times her mum took her to the park, zoo, movies and museum with Urbosa. Images of them holding hands and exchanging cheek pecks snapped into place as if it were obvious.
“I didn't tell you because I feared you would think less of me. Of us.” Urbosa, the proud Gerudo soldier, looked down at the floor. And also you may be my biological child, which means that I may have let that slug help raise you out of my own cowardice. However if it is true your college fund is probably going to disappear if he finds out. No biggie.
“Mama.” Urbosa blinked as she looked at her daughter's face, her little bird smiling up at her. “I'm glad mum had you and that you married her. I don't think I could have made it this far without you.” Zelda whispered the last part through tears as she hugged her Mama tighter.
“I Love you little bird.”
“I love you too Mama.”

Urbosa suffering, that's it. That's the chapter.
Chapter Text
“So is that the guy?” A lanky sheikah asked as he leaned over the bench with his binoculars hanging from a string around his neck.
“Yes. And will you shut up. What part of not drawing attention to ourselves do you not understand?” An old potbellyed sheikah snapped as he adjusted his camera.
“Hylia, Uncle Kohga. Who pissed in your cheerios this morning?” The lanky one snarked as he held up his binoculars, “Holy shit, who is that?!”
“That's his daughter, you dipshit.” Kohga rolled his eyes.
“Not her. The Gerudo woman.”
“That is his ex wife's widow.” Sooga gruffed as he kept his eyes on his slate.
“Oh that man had no chance if he was competing with her. I mean shit.” The lanky sheikah practically drooled.
“Why exactly did we bring the rookie with us?” Sooga asked, already deeply tired of their companion.
“Um. Because I'm a member of the Yiga clan too.” The rookie crossed his arms glaring at the large man.
“His mom is my sister. She'd kill me if he wasn't included.” Kohga admitted as he snapped a few pictures.
“Seems Rhoam wasn't entirely insane thinking that the boy had ulterior motives.” Sooga grumbled as he watched the couple.
“I'm bored. Why are we doing this again?” The rookie groaned as he lounged on the nearby bench.
“We're getting paid.” Kohga snapped at his nephew.
“No shit. But like why is he so obsessed with stalking his daughter?”
“I don't know. I didn't ask. He just said "go see if the boy is conspiring against me.” Kohga growled clearly about to lose the remains of his patience.
“It's probably money” the nephew speculated, now fully laying down on the bench like a bored child. “Old rich men are always after more money.”
“Rookie, if you keep talking I'm going to tell your mother about the disposable vapes you keep under your mattress.” Kohga threatened as he rubbed his temples.
“Dude. Not cool- Ow! He hit me!”
Sooga glared at him, “You're lucky I only hit you lightly.”
“That's child abuse.” He pouted
“You’re 27?” Kohga blinked.
“Under 30 still counts.”
“It doesn't.” Sooga sighed, “Do we have enough evidence or are we going to follow them further?”
“The more evidence the more we get paid.” Kohga stated as he stretched before getting up from the bench, “Now come on before we lose sight of them.”
“Okay, here me out. Can we get ice cream?” His nephew asked.
“We're on a steak out and you want to get ice cream?!” Sooga exploded, grabbing the rookie by the collar of his shirt.
“easy cousin, also the ice cream place down the block fucking slaps deadass”
Sooga turned to look at Kohga with an exasperated look. The old sheikah scratched his chin, “That ice cream shop is really good.”
Sooga buried his head in his hands as he muttered, “idiots, they're all idiots.”
Urbosa smiled as they walked around downtown Castle Town. The lovebirds walked ahead of her, with Zelda happily chatting about the history of buildings as well as places she remembered going to as a child. Link didn't say much. Which Urbosa noticed seemed to be a thing with him, but he smiled brightly every time Zelda explained something. She saw the look in their eyes when they stared at each other, the way they orbited around each other as if they'd always belonged there.
“Bosa!!! Girl!” A familiar voice called from a construction site nearby.
She turned and laughed, shaking her head, “Bolson, you old fruit!”
The hylian jogged across the street before hugging her tightly, “Oh look at you, you haven't aged a day.”
“Flattery will get you nowhere.” She rolled her eyes as she gestured for the two young adults to join them. “Little bird, you remember Bolson. He would babysit you when Mrs. Yamamoto was out of town.”
“Of course I remember guncle Bolson, who snuck me into multiple gay bars for drag night so I could watch him perform.” Zelda giggled as she smiled brightly at him.
“Oh my Hylia, that can't be little Zelda.” Bolson looked at her with teary nostalgic pride, “You're as beautiful as your mom.” He beamed before turning to look at the young man next to her, “Oh ho ho, and who's this little twink?”
“That's my boyfriend, Link.” Zelda blushed slightly as Bolson looked him up and down like he was examining a suit.
“Hmmmmm” He smirked looking over at Urbosa, “What do you think Bosa? Do we like him?”
Urbosa snickered as she saw just a little bit of panic cross Link’s face, “He's been winning me over.”
Bolson smiled, winking at the poor boy who was red from ear to ear, “Damn, you must have made quite the impression to get that kind of praise.”
Link nodded, rubbing the back of his neck bashfully almost hiding behind Zelda.
The middle aged man laughed before raising an eyebrow at his old friend, “So what brings you back to town after all this time eh? Certainly isn't because you accepted any of my offers for you to visit.”
“It's parents' weekend at Hyrule State so I figured I'd drop by to see my little bird.” Urbosa glanced down at the sidewalk, “Sorry I never accepted any of those offers. Being back here..... it's hard sometimes.”
“I understand.” He gave her a gentle squeeze on the arm, “I just felt like giving you shit. Plus I promised your sister I'd bug you about your lack of a social life if I ran into you.”
“Of course my little sister is conspiring against me.” Urbosa grumbled.
“Hey, someone has to. Mind if we hit up our old haunt later. I have tea I want to spill that I don't think their innocent little ears can handle.” He smiled broadly with mischief sparkling in his eyes.
Urbosa shook her head smiling as she patted him on the shoulder, “Sure. I'll text you when I drop these two lovebirds off back at campus later.”
“I'll hold you to it. Toodles~” he grinned as he headed back towards the construction site.
‘Wait, you went to multiple gay bars as a child and you still didn't realize Telma's was a gay bar?” Link smirked as he signed.
“I told Mipha to keep her mouth shut!! Shush!! You've seen the adults I grew up around......I didn't know bars came without go go cages and pride flags!” Zelda blushed as she jabbed at his side playfully.
“You didn't know Telma's was a gay bar?” Urbosa smirked, “Oh my sweet summer child.” She patted the girl on the head.
“You both suck. I hope you know that.” Zelda pouted.
“So long as you don't say I spit.” Link wiggled his eyebrows, then yelped in surprise as Zelda swatted him.
“Rude! Rude! Boy!”
“If I'm so rude, why are you smiling?”
“I am not!” She blushed sucking in her lips to try to hide her smile.
“You are.” Urbosa hummed from behind them.
“Don't encourage him.”
“Hey at least I haven't broken out the puns” Link smirked as he placed a chaste kiss on her cheek.
“You wouldn't dare.” She glared but the side of her mouth twitched slightly into a smile.
“Try me.”
“I want a divorce.” Zelda huffed, biting her lip to prevent a smile.
“We’re not even married!?” Link snorted.
“Pre divorce.” Zelda smirked before breaking out into a fit of giggles.
Urbosa shook her head rolling her eyes at the pair. Oh to be young and in love.
Urbosa yawned as she finally made it back to her hotel room. They'd spent most of the day wandering downtown before Zelda spotted the science museum. She practically dragged the other two towards it, she was so excited.
Urbosa didn't understand most of the concepts aside from the very basics and from the look on Link’s face he wasn't much better. Yet he never stopped Zelda from explaining it, only occasionally asking her to go over something when he was lost.
Her little bird all but glowed when he asked, happily trying to explain concepts of physics, astronomy, engineering or whatever exhibit she was excited about to him. His eyes only drifted to glance at her lips before giving her a small peck.
The Gerudo shook her head as she recalled today's events. I understand why everyone teased my Zelda and I for being disgustingly in love.
She sent Bolson a text saying she'll meet him at their old bar later when she saw a message from her sister.
Bitch: Call me I need to know what happened when you met little bird's boyfriend
Dumbass: Patience is a virtue, ya know
Bitch: You all but hired a P.I. on him. Spill.
Urbosa rolled her eyes as she saw the incoming call, “Aren't you at work?”
“I own the place, I can do what I want.” Buliara defended, “Now did you scare him back to Hateno or no?”
“I did not.” Urbosa sighed, her eyes wandering towards a picture she'd placed on the nightstand. There on the little table next to what would have been her wife's side was a photo of them on their wedding day, her little bird sitting on her mum's lap, beaming brightly. “He's actually quite sweet.”
“The voe with a hometown heroes page and a list of volunteering as long as the desert is sweet. Who would have ever guessed that?” Buliara snarked happily implying her less than subtle ‘I told you so’.
“Fuck off. Like you're going to be any better when Riju starts seriously dating.”
“Don't put that out there. Middle school crushes are bad enough.” Buliara groaned before smirking, “So are they as nauseating as you and your Zelda were?”
She bit her lip, despite being on a normal phone call she could feel her little sister's shit eating grin. She grumbled slightly, “Yes..... Stop laughing, it isn't that funny!”
“Like hell it's not! Is he in love with her?”
“Head over ass.” Urbosa sighed, “She has him wrapped around her finger and she doesn't even know it.”
“And her?” Buliara snorted as she basked in her sister's irritation like a cat in a sun beam.
“She asked me when I knew I was in love with her mom......” Urbosa buried her face in her hands, “I also may have mentioned something.”
“Oh did you finally grow a pair and tell her you might be her mom all along?”
“Hey I had a pair. I got it removed, thank you very much.” Urbosa snarked, “And no. But I did tell her that we dated before her first marriage and.....into it.”
“I'll accept that as progress. Although I get a sneaking suspicion you hope she puts the pieces together herself.”
“No! ...... maybe...... Shut up.” She huffed, “It's hard okay? I'm not exactly proud of that part of my life. Sneaking around, begging her to leave him and watching her destroy herself to please people who didn’t give a shit about her.”
“Beating yourself up over ancient history you can't change helps no one.”
“I know! I know.” Urbosa sighed, “My little bird is the best thing in my life..... What if she never wants to talk to me again? Or if she's not mine, biologically speaking.”
“You were there holding her mother's hand on the day she was born. You helped her take her first steps. You helped teach her her first words. Rhoam almost didn't show up to the hospital for her birth and left for three months immediately after for a business trip. You took care of them when he wouldn't. Biology or not you are more of her parent than he will ever be. If she isn't related to you that doesn't change your affection towards her and if she is....... Well, we can call those world record people because she'll officially hold the record for the world's shortest and palest Gerudo in existence.”
Urbosa snorted, “With her luck, her first child would be built like a Gerudo.”
“Her little voe would need a step ladder to talk to their children.” Buliara wheezed.
Urbosa lost it at that image, “He would. But I really don't think he'd mind.”
“Your little bird might, with her frame. She better hope they at least get Hylian shoulders because ouch.” Buliara chuckled, “Now go get ready, you don't want to keep Bolson waiting.”
“I never should have introduced you two, then I wouldn't have to deal with both of you conspiring against me.”
“But you did~”. Buliara hummed, “And I don't think us trying to help you have a life outside of your job and your daughter is conspiring against you.”
“I have a life outside of my job and my daughter.” Urbosa defended, “I have book club.”
“the book club you went to once then didn't go back to?”
“Hey, they didn't read the book! What's the point of a book club if they don't read the book?”
“To drink and complain? No wonder you and your Zelda got along so well. You were both giant nerds.” Buliara teased.
“Just for that I'm going to send your daughter photos from when you were in middle school and tried to give yourself a home perm.”
“Wait! Noooooo! I just told her that I'd help her dye her hair at home.”
Urbosa smirked, “Enjoy salon prices, bitch”
“Bye dumbass. Don't forget to send me pictures when Bolson gets blasted and dances in the cages.”
“Already planning on it.”
Tingle’s was one of the oldest gay bars in Hyrule, which is the only reason she could think of that would justify keeping its very dumb name. However it was also the bar she and her friends used to frequent as it was closest to where they all lived at the time.
Urbosa snorted at the familiar neon sign that depicted a drag queen version of a kokiri posing on a piano winking and holding a Cosmo. She opened the door and felt herself relax as she spotted Bolson at the bar. “This place certainly hasn't changed.”
Bolson nodded as he patted the bar stool next to him, “Now why don't you fill me in on all that's been happening, because your sister said something about your wife's maybe daddy stalking her?”
Urbosa groaned, “Indirectly. He technically hired Link to stalk her. Link’s dad needs care, their insurance won't cover it, Link wanted to refuse the job but his roommate convinced him to talk to Zelda, the law professors and myself about it. And now Link is cashing checks while feeding Rhoam false information.” She waved down the bartender, “Scotch and soda make it a double.”
“Pffffffffffffft that’s some bad soap opera shit. ” Bolson snorted as he hit his vape. “I hope Link cashes those checks quickly. I wouldn't be trusting Maybe Daddy's money, if I were him.”
“The slug is old money?”
“Yeah then why has he foreclosed two buildings, sold three more at a loss and is currently selling his family's prized estate?” Bolson smirked, “The tea I wanted to spill is that my company has been hired to remodel three of those buildings. According to my sources in real estate, Rhoam closed his family's law firm and is about to be audited. Considering some of his less than savory political dealings, equally questionable legal practices he might actually be screwed.
Urbosa frowned, “Then why the hell is he trying to keep such a close eye on Zelda all of a sudden? I know she has money in her trust from her grandfather, but she currently only has extremely limited access to it until she's twenty five. And he's the overseer?”
“Not to mention what a shit way to try to rebuild a relationship.” Bolson giggled before lowering his voice and doing a very posh accent, “Hello sweetheart, I know I've been absent for most of your existence but I hired a guy to stalk you so I can understand you better and we can be a big happy family.”
Urbosa laughed as she sipped her drink, “Honestly he would be the kind of man who thinks stalking someone is a legitimate way to get to know someone.”
“Speaking of maybe daddy, you ever tell little Zelda you might be the other option?” Bolson asked as he adjusted the umbrella in his drink.
She shrunk under his gaze as she stared at the condescension on her glass, “Getting there. I made some progress. I told her more of the truth..... I just hate that it's so complicated. I mean I was scared enough telling her that I was her mum’s other woman. Now I have to add I might also have been her baby daddy? It's.....humiliating. I know my Zelda never loved Rhoam, that she was scared to stand up to her family. I know he and her father were both abusive. For fuck sake, I tried to talk her out of caring the pregnancy because of her health! Especially after everything else..... How do I look the child I raised in the eyes and tell her any of that? That’s not even including the giant load of dysphoria. They don't make parenting books about this shit.” Urbosa took another sip, “And yes I looked.”
“Easy Bosa, one thing at a time. How did she react to the whole affair thing?” Bolson asked as he pulled the garnish out of his drink so he could eat the cherry.
“She seemed okay with it. She even said she was happy her mum had me in her life.”
“Well there's a start.”
“Bolson what- what if she finds out the rest and she hates me? What if she is my daughter and resents me for letting the slug be in her life? What if she finds out how close I came to cutting my losses and leaving?”
“I told you about how I cracked my skull because my buddy bet me I couldn't do a kick flip over the campus stairs right?”
“Yes... You said it was the most expensive lesson you ever learned.” Urbosa rolled her eyes.
“I was twenty three when I did that. A grown ass man who was also in grad school getting his master's in engineering.” He turned and gave her hand a gentle squeeze, “I thought I had figured shit out and I knew what I was doing. And not just skateboarding, I thought I knew what I had planned for my life. But looking back I don't think I had a good damn clue what the hell I was doing. Honestly I think I somehow have even less of a clue now.” He laughed softly, “And that was without a kid in the mix. You did the best you could at the time. No sense relighting old coals just to burn your feet, eh?”
“I....just don't want to lose her.” Urbosa’s voice broke slightly as she felt tears sting her eyes.
“You respect her don't you?”
Urbosa looked at him like he slapped her, “Of course.”
“Do you lie to people you respect?”
“Well.... No. But I was trying to protect her.”
“Why?”
“Because I didn't want her to be hurt.”
Bolson stirred his drink with the umbrella, “Doesn't lying to her also hurt her?”
Urbosa slumped slightly, “Yes.”
“So if lying hurts her and telling the truth hurts her. But you respect her, why not just tell her the truth?” He raised an eyebrow as he finished his drink.
“How are you the same man who puked his guts out in the bathroom in full drag, while I rubbed your back, and held your hair because you glued your wig to your skin and couldn't get it off?”
“Because I stopped drinking, got therapy and learned how wig glue works.” He laughed as he waved down the bartender, “Another Shirley Temple please.”
“Telling her is going to suck.” Urbosa groaned.
“Most likely.” He shrugged, “But I think you'll both come out better for it.”
“You think she'll even want to talk to me after she finds out?”
“I mean if she's anything like her mother she'll be hurt but she'll come around and if she's anything like you she's far too stubborn to cut her losses with someone she loved even if they have hurt her.”
Urbosa laughed despite herself, “I think I needed to hear that. Thanks.”
“No problem. Now, tell me everything you've learned about the boy dating our little Zelda. The twink has your approval but he hasn't gotten my approval yet.”
Urbosa let out a deep exasperated sigh, “If I tell you this you promise not to laugh?”
“Scout’s honor.”
“He's a lot like me when I was young- You promised not to laugh!” She smacked his arm.
“Ow pffffffffffffft, I'm sorry but that's funny. Honestly you having to watch your daughter falling in love with an idiot who worships the ground she walks on? Iconic. Honestly? Love that for her.”
“I took one engineering class in college and I'm paying for it the rest of my life.”
“You dropped out the first week.”
“Okay so I got my money back on that one.” She grinned before they both burst out laughing.
