Finding a Safe Place

Summary:

After overhearing Doey and Poppy's conversation through the pipes you decide to make a different choice.

Chapter 1: Making a choice

Chapter Text

“It's the best for everyone Doey. That no trace of this place is left. We agreed to that.”

“I know… But us, everyone in there, we’re not just things gone wrong. We’re people…”

Those words echoed in your head, stopping you in your tracks, your whole mind racing as you processed Poppy’s plan. They weren't getting out. You, Poppy, and Kissy would live and the rest would die. That was her plan. You continued to listen, hearing the two argue their points. Poppy apologizes for what is to come but you can hear that her mind is made up. And Doey sticking up for his fellow toys, his friends. They were not just things gone wrong… They were people. Not just something to be thrown away. The sewer seemed even more eerie and silent as their muffled conversation carried through the pipes ended.

You stand there thinking about everything. Everything you’ve been through. The death and torment you felt and inflicted. A rat crawls across your foot, jerking you from your thoughts and making you jump. Looking down the dark and suffocating sewer made you appreciate the toys constructed home even more. You thought of all the Toys you had seen. Those whispering words of fear at the intrusion of you and Poppy. Some just flat out hiding in cubbies, too nervous to even meet you.

And others… It wasn't hard to see that kids inside them were still there. And that's what they were… Just kids.

You came here to save the survivors, and that’s exactly what you were going to do.

That settled it in your mind and heart and you turned and made your way back to safe haven. Earning a few confused looks and skeptical frowns you made your way back through the infirmary and towards the main hall. You approach the unofficial guardian of this world standing just outside the generator room, who greets you with a false warm smile but with a clear level of underlying frustration accompanying it.

"Hiya pal! You seem to be a bit turned around. We need you to go get that omni hand as soon as possible."

" I know. But…We need to talk... In private" You say, voice cracking with under use. Internally realizing you hadn't spoken at all since the Huggy incident.

Doey is surprised at this and gestures for you to join him in the generator room. He closes the door behind you both before turning to you.

" What's going on?" Doey says frowning and worried that yet another problem was rearing its head.

"I've been thinking of Poppy's plan… I don't want to go through with it and I'm not convinced she's telling me the whole truth…"

Doey looks internally torn.

"I know she just wants to do what is best-"

"But that's just it, Doey! I don't think this is what's best! What's the point of saving some orphans if it means dooming others? You’re kids! I don't want to…" You break off to calm yourself, taking a breath. "... I'm not helping her kill you all…. I'm just not…"

Doey looks touched, taking off his hat.

"... Thank you…But Poppy’s right in some ways... This is no way to live… "

“ What you are doing here matters Doey. You all matter. And you don't deserve to spend all this time doing your best to survive only to die to kill the prototype. I refuse to do that to you all.” You say, eyes starting to water.

Doey reaches out, putting his hands on your shoulders comfortingly.

“Hey… It’ll be alright. We can…We can work this out. We’ll talk with Poppy and-”

“ I don't believe Poppy, Doey.”

Doey is silent, looking both saddened and understanding. He is unsure what to say about your words and removes his hands from your shoulders, dropping them to his sides and letting them rest on the floor in a display of dismay. “Why can't she make this easy?...”

“ …Doey… Be honest… Are the orphans really alive down there?”

Doey clams up, arms immediately retracting back up to their normal length, shifting his weight and looking at the floor. Giving off the look of a kid who was caught in a lie and reminding you once again that these toys were in fact just kids.

“... I don't know…”

You nod, brushing off another bitter sting of betrayal and take a breath.

“Alright. Thank you for being honest. I think that's enough of Poppy’s plans. I want to talk about my plan now.”

Doey looks confused and a little skeptical of this.

“We are all leaving.”

Doey freezes and you can see the thoughts flying around his head. His body nearly shifts at this and he clenches his fists, looking at you with held back rage as it appears you touched a nerve.

“You have some nerve joking about something like that-”

“I'm not joking, Doey.” You reply calmly, “I mean it.”

The doughman stills again at your calm sincerity, a million thoughts seemingly keeping him in place and from berating you more. You continue on before he can continue again.

“ After I left Playtime I took out some loans and bought a plot of land and started a small farm. It's out in the middle of nowhere. It’s surrounded by woods, and no one comes out there. Heck, it's a 5-minute walk just to get to the mail bin… Look.” You say, seeing his bewildered expression, “I know Poppy is right that you can't live a normal life. I wish I could make that right, but I can't. But you can LIVE. All of you. I'm not saying it's a perfect plan, but blowing up an entire factory and killing everyone just to kill one person isn't a plan. It's a massacre.”

Doey looks internally torn before laying a hand on your shoulder: “ Look. I get what you're saying and… And I've thought of this before but we can't. The others can't go where I can.”

“But they can go where I can.” You reply, raising your hand up to rest on his over large one “Between you and me we can get them out of here. And if I can get the omni hand, there's nothing stopping us from reaching the exit.”

Doey hesitates, worried but hopeful.

“Do you really think we can?”

“Yes.” You said, with a determined nod.

Doey takes a deep breath.

“Alright, let's do this. Let's go talk to Poppy.”
