Work Text:
Late nights with Schlatt were always one of Ted's favorites. The atmosphere was always right, and the time was always theirs. Theirs only, no work, no friends or colleagues wanting to hang, just them.
So it only made sense for them to sleep in the same bed together when Schlatt visits.
Hushed whispers and giggles fill the dark room, the only light being the moon shining through a sliver in the curtains, casting a soft glow across the couple.
Blankets are strewn messily across the two, and pillows thrown about.
They're practically nose to nose, having given up on staying on their respective “sides” ages ago.
“Your bed is really so comfy, Ted, you're going to have to give it to me.”
“Uh! Excuse you! Maybe it just means you have to come by more often.”
“To LA? Fat chance.”
The flow of conversation ebbs after a while, and they find it replaced with yawning and sleepy blinks.
Schlatt moves first, scooting closer to Ted and laying his head down lower, moving down to rest on Ted’s chest.
“What are you doing?” Ted asks, shifting his body over slightly to accommodate for the head that has just intruded on his space.
Schlatt just hums sleepily in response, burrowing his face farther into Ted's chest, searching. With every breath, Schlatt gets hit with a faint smell of pine and coconut. It’s a scent that he's come to associate with Ted. It's warm and welcoming, and he almost relaxes. Almost.
Finally, Schlatt finds what he's searching for, a clear, steady thump in his ear. Ted's heartbeat.
Ted cards a hand through Schlatt’s hair, slowly. He's a little more than confused. Schlatt’s never really been a touchy person. He'd rather use his actions and words to show his affection. Granted, he'd never denied Ted whenever he’d lean over into the younger's space for a hug, or reached his hand out to be held. He just wasn't the type to initiate that type of contact.
And yet here he was, burrowing himself as far into Ted's chest as possible, arms loosely wrapped around Ted's body in an almost attempt at a hug.
“You feeling ok?” Ted mumbles quietly, glancing down to the best of his ability at Schlatt's dark brown waves resting atop his torso. He feels Schlatt take a deep breath against him.
“Mhm,” Schlatt only hums softly. Ted frowns.
“Are you sure?”
Schlatt hums a confirmation again, taking a deep inhale through his nose before he speaks in a low voice.
“I like… I like being able to hear your heartbeat. Reminds me that you're really here with me, that this is real. It's… calming.”
Ted feels his chest rumble with every word, and he smiles to himself, his face flushed and flustered. He blinks, dropping his head so his nose is pressed into the soft warmth of Schlatt's hair and gently plants a kiss right there on the crown of his head.
Then, as if he just couldn't stop himself, he leaves another. And another. And another and another until Schlatt is practically glowing atop him.
Schlatt giggles, a small soft laugh that's much less loud than the one he puts on for the cameras, one that only makes its appearance when he's comfortable. Ted loves that laugh. He grins impossibly wider, taking Schlatt's cheek in his palm and gently raising his head to meet his eyes.
Ted just smiles softly again, his thumb running patterns across the skin near Schlatt's mouth. It's hard to see through the darkness of the room, but Ted thinks he can see a red glow to Schlatt's skin. He resists the urge to coo.
Schlatt whines, leaning down to press their lips together in a sweet yet desperate kiss. Ted relaxes into the feeling, melting into Schlatt's touch and the way his hands tighten on Ted's sides.
Ted pulls away for air and huffs out an astonished breath.
“God, Schlatt, what did I ever do to deserve you?”
Schlatt tilts his head in confusion, scrunching his nose a little, and lord, that's another adorable little trait Ted couldn’t ever get enough of.
“You're so perfect,” He whispers, pressing another short and loving kiss to his boyfriend's lips.
Schlatt darts his tongue out to lick his lips.
Ted's going to die at the hands of the killer that is Jschlatt.
“I love you.”
Or maybe his own lack of a filter will be his downfall.
He could have played it off as playful, but the softness in his voice and the way he's gazing up at Schlatt with so much trust and longing in his eyes, you’d think he hung the stars themselves would give him away.
Schlatt blinks once, twice, and Ted's mouth goes dry. He’d fucked up the moment, he’d said it too fast, of course he had. He's already parted his lips to take it back before Schlatt comes surging down, pressing himself flush against Ted as he kisses him.
“I love you too, so much. So much,” Schlatt whispers into Ted's lips. Ted can feel their hearts beating together, Schlatt's faster and more irregular, his chest pressed against his own.
In one swift movement, Ted has flipped them onto their sides, and one hand has slid down to grasp onto the pudge of Schlatt's waist. Schlatt whines quietly.
The kiss lights a fire in Ted's gut, more intense than any butterfly or firework cliche. He feels drunk on Schlatt. His taste, his love, his look, everything makes Ted want to love him so hard he can't stand it.
Ted pulls away and moves his mouth down to press soft, fleeting kisses to Schlatt's jaw and neck, pausing every so often to gently suck on the skin.
Schlatt hums contentedly, letting his eyes slip closed as he relaxes into it.
“I love you,” He mumbles again, sleep tugging at the edges of his voice. Ted brings his mouth back up to press one last kiss to Schlatt's lips before touching their foreheads together and tangling his fingers in the other's hair.
“I love you too.”
Schlatt smiles, already mostly asleep. His arm curls around Ted's torso, and he whines.
“Ted… flip…”
Ted is only confused for a second before he huffs out a breath of recognition. He turns back to lie on his back, letting Schlatt flop back down on his chest.
Ted hopes his heart is beating a million praises in Morse Code as he drifts off to sleep.
