ROZANOV: Commissioner Crowell.
CROWELL: Sit down.
Complete silence for 30 seconds.
CROWELL: There are a few things in life that I absolutely can’t stand. One thing I hate is surprises. Another is disloyalty. And another is liars. But the thing I hate the most is being embarrassed. And I especially hate it when the league is embarrassed.
ROZANOV: That does sound bad.
CROWELL: (Audio is not clear) - how I feel about you two right now. Your actions have put me in a very difficult situation. On the one hand, your behavior is completely unacceptable and absolutely cannot be allowed. On the other, you’re two of the biggest stars in the league and the playoffs are about to start.
HOLLANDER: Can’t be allowed?
CROWELL: I would think that part would be obvious. But I (Audio is not clear) - a video flying around the internet of you two making out.
HOLLANDER: It was a mistake.
CROWELL (yelling): You’re fucking right it was a mistake!
HOLLANDER: I meant the video wasn’t supposed to show that. We didn’t know.
CROWELL (yelling): Well, it did! And I had to fly to Montreal to deal with it. You think I have time for this?!
CROWELL(continuing calmly): We need to get things back to normal as soon as possible. I don’t want a media circus around this thing.
HOLLANDER: We don’t either.
CROWELL: The league has prepared a statement.
Complete silence for 53 seconds, sounds of paper rustling.
HOLLANDER: But this isn’t true.
CROWELL: It doesn’t matter.
HOLLANDER (yelling): It fucking does matter! It wasn’t a prank! We’re together. We’re - we’re getting married this summer.
CROWELL: That is not happening. Not if you want to remain in this league.
ROZANOV: Really? You are going to kick us out?
HOLLANDER: We’ll sue the shit out of the league.
Complete silence for 13 seconds.
CROWELL: You’re right. You could sue. But do you think any team would sign you after that? Either way you’d be done. We release the statement, most hockey fans will believe it because they’ll want to believe it. There’s no scandal, you boys get to keep playing for as long as you want, and we all move on. And obviously, you don’t get fucking married this summer.
HOLLANDER: Fuck this! Here’s a plan: we do whatever we want this summer and then we come back and have all-star seasons again next year. We’re not a couple of naïve rookies you can intimidate. You think we don’t know what we’re worth to this league?
CROWELL: What you were worth. You’re destroying your own brands with this shit.
ROZANOV: No, we are making them stronger.
CROWELL: I am offering the only option that will save both of your careers and the reputation of this league. If you post your own statement and start flaunting your relationship then you will obliterate your legacies. You’ll be jokes. Choose carefully.
Complete silence for 10 seconds. Sound of chair scraping on the floor.
HOLLANDER: I choose him. Come on Ilya.
Chair scraping on floor, door being opened, footsteps.
CROWELL (distant): We are not done here! You need to fucking - (Audio is not clear)

Even though we support the (righteous) anger directed at the N*L and Cr*well, we don’t want to risk doing anything that can get Shane into (more) trouble, especially since the audio hasn’t been confirmed as real yet.

An open letter:
Two days ago, an audio recording was leaked online of a high-ranking NHL official reprimanding Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov. As disappointing as that was to hear, none of us can say that we’re surprised.
Every gay player - whether in football, basketball, baseball, soccer, or hockey - has heard this kind of talk before. We all know it too well. Any LGBT high-profile athlete can tell you they’ve encountered some version of, “You’ll never work in this town again if you come out.”
So if two of the league’s biggest superstars can be spoken to that way simply for being in a gay relationship, what message does that send to everyone else? It certainly doesn’t inspire confidence in rookies, players on lower-ranked teams, or gay kids who dream of making it to the NHL one day. Instead, it warns them that no matter their talent or dedication, acceptance isn’t guaranteed - and the culture still has a long way to go.
The league can’t keep looking the other way when it comes to blatant discrimination, and this moment should be a wake-up call. We need change. Real change. We need to make it clear through action and not just statements, that every single player deserves respect, safety and the freedom to be who they are.
That is why we are starting up an initiative to combat discrimination within hockey. We need to fight back against the racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia and overall toxic behavior that can be prevalent in sports. HFE (Hockey For Everyone) will aim to be an inclusive movement committed to making the game safer, healthier, and more welcoming for all.
If you are a player, a coach or a league official reading this, I highly encourage you to join us. If we’re going to grow - and we need to grow - we will need everyone to pull their weight. Your voice and your talent will be an immense help to take that first step towards where we need to go.
