Work Text:
Bokuto wasn’t exactly a fan of Five Nights At Freddy’s, so when he found himself at the theaters buying two tickets for Friday night’s release of the second FNAF movie, he was slightly shocked.
Akashi’s birthday was coming up, and although Bokuto already had a million and one plans with him this Saturday, he thought it’d be nice if he surprised him with a ticket to the movies. He knew that Akaashi was into this kind of stuff. He had heard him talk about it with Kenma when the game first came out.
Bokuto chuckled to himself, thinking about how unlikely their friendship would’ve been if Kuroo and himself never introduced them to each other. He thought it was nice for Akaashi to have friends his age with similar interests, as he usually hangs out with the third years at Fukurodani, but another part of him wanted to be selfish. Bokuto told himself he was buying the tickets so Akaashi could enjoy his birthday. Not so he could have Akaashi all for himself. Not at all.
Bokuto pockets the printed tickets and heads out, his feet sticking slightly to the popcorn-infested carpet floor. The moist air outside makes him shimmy quickly into his car and shiver a little. Winter was creeping in.
~~~~~~~~~~
“AKAAASHIIII”
“Bokuto-san, you don’t need to scream into the speaker. My phone works just fine.”
Bokuto wears a pout that Akaashi can’t see. “When will you be here?”
“I’m ten minutes away. Maybe i’d drive faster if you told me what the surprise was.”
“NOPE! Just hurry!!”
“Ok, Bokuto-san. I’ve gotta go now, i’ve hit some traffic. Bye.”
“WAI-“
Bokuto is cut off by Akaashi ending the call. He stares solemnly at his phone before hopping up and going to get ready.
He didn’t exaclty know what the appropriate attire was to wear to a FNAF movie, especially since he knew nothing of the game beyond the quick recap that Kuroo had given him. Something about a pizzeria and animatronics and blah blah blah.
He threw on some jeans and a sweater to keep warm at the movies. Bokuto was conptemplating bringing a blanket when the doorbell rang. He grabs the tickets and sprints to the door.
“Akaashi!! Are you excited?!”
“I feel like i’m being kidnapped. Is that the surprise?” The boy at the door deadpans.
“HEY HEY HEY!! don’t be such a downer i’m sure you’ll like it.” Bokuto leaps to the side to let him through and goes to the kitchen to grab his car keys.
“Are we going to a museum?”
“Don’t guess the surprise!! That ruins it. And no, it’s not a museum.”
“A library?”
“Nope”
“… we’re not going to the courts, right?”
“I wish,” Bokuto pouts and Akaashi teasingly glares back, “but no. Not on your birthday.”
They get into Bokuto’s car and head out. As they near the movies, Akaashi breathes out a chuckle. “What are we going to watch, Bokuto-san?”
“You don’t know if we’re going to the movies.” Bokuto puts on a guilty face which makes it all the more obvious. “You’re literally parking in the theatre lot right now.”
“So quick to assume!!” He turns off the car and rushes to open the door for his friend.
They walk into the theatre and scan their tickets. “Screen room 5. It’s just that way.” The red haired worker points to a hallway with many numbered rooms. “Thanks.”
Akaashi sees the poster for the screening of the FNAF 2 movie and smiles light enough that only Bokuto notices. “Thought you’d like it.”
“You haven’t even played FNAF. When me and Kenma talked about it, you and kuroo-san always ran off doing god knows what.”
“Yeah, I might not understand it at all, but I wanted to do something special with my best friend for his birthday.” Bokuto grins at Akaashi’s lighthearted reaction. He smiled back, which made Bokuto feel like he just ran a mile.
“Let’s go in before the movies starts without us.”
“Sounds good.”
The movie begins when they take their seats. They share a bowl of popcorn ad the plot progresses. Akaashi laughs at some parts that Bokuto doesn’t understand, but he laughs along with him anyways.
Soon enough, an unsettling scene begins to play and the suspense builds. Bokuto turns to his right to see Akaashi watching the movie just fine. In fact, he seems to be enjoying himself.
Bokuto had noted before that the movie was tagged “Horror” but hadn’t thought much of it. He’d never done good with that type of stuff; It just wasn’t what he’d prefer to watch. He settles back down in his seat and hopes it’s nothing too severe. Maybe it’s just a character getting badly hurt or a creepy figure showing up. How bad can a pizzeria get?
Suddenly, a horrifying creatue jumps out at the screen.
In an instant, Bokuto lets out the most blood curdling scream. He has his head between his knees and his legs pulled in against his chest. It seems as though the whole movie theater went silent, and the only thing Bokuto could feel was his own body shaking down to his bones.
However, the moment only lasted a second, and he looked up quickly to see that Akaashi had already jumped out of his seat in concern.
“Bokuto-san. Are you alright?”
Bokuto shook himself off and replied, “Yes… ‘m fine”
“Are you sure?” Akaashi’s tight posture remained “We can leave if you’d like”
“No, no, no we’re here for your bir-“
“Bokuto-san?!?” Akaashi called after him when Bokuto stood up, put one arm over his mouth and another over his stomach, and ran out. “Bokuto-san!”
Akaashi rushed as quietly as he could out of the screening room, apologizing for the interruption, and looked up and down the hallway for a sign of his friend. He found Bokuto doubled over a waste bin.
“Bokuto…”
He slowly turned to look at Akaashi, covering his mouth in embarrassment. “Listen, I don’t do to well with horror and, well, that guy totally jumped outta nowhere and-“
Akaashi began wheezing like his life depended on it.
Bokuto’s eyes widened at his straight faced friend being so expressive, and because he was laughingat him.
“HEYY!! It’s not that funny!”
Akaashi could barely meet his eyes. “It really is, Bokuto-san.” He said between chuckles. Bokuto found no other but to join him.
After they were both done with their delirious fits, Akaashi calmed himself down and spoke, “You should’ve told me you couldn’t handle horror.” Bokuto opened his mouth to protest, but Akaashi put a finger up to silence him. “Hey, it’s alright. I should’ve told you it had disturbing scenes, knowing that you’ve never even bothered with the game.”
“No! I asked Kuroo for a recap!”
“That explains a lot.”
“Hey!” Bokuto puts on the most offended face he can manage “He’s pretty educated on this, you know.”
Akaashi smiles at him. “Clearly not educated enough to know that Kenma and I already had tickets for this for Sunday.”
“WHAT.”
Akaashi almost starts laughing again. “It’s alright Bokuto-san. I don’t mind seeing it twice,” He shifts a little and breaks their eye contact “although I would’ve preferred to go with you, anyways, if you knew anything about FNAF. So, thank you.”
Bokuto softens and puts his hands on Akaashi’s shoulders. “Happy birthday, Akaashi.”
“Thanks, Bokuto-san.”
“Sorry about the whole breaking down about a jumpscare thing. I just hope you had a good time.”
“I did.”
Bokuto rarely sees Akaashi genuine smile. When they’re this close, he can clearly see it. It’s beautiful.
“You should wash off your face. You’ve got a little, um…”
Bokuto snaps out of it. “Oh, yeah! Sorry, give me a second.” He zips to the bathroom to clean up.
Bokuto splashes cold water on his face and allows it to clean up his features. He feels guilty for ruining Akaashi’s birthday night, but he thinks that his friend enjoyed himself. After all, that’s the most he’s seen Akaashi laugh in a while. Bokuto hopes he can see that more often.
The two hop into Bokuto’s car and head back to his house.
“Thanks again for tonight. I had fun.” Akaashi stands at his doorstep once more. “Of course. That was the plan.” Bokuto smiles at him.
“But, uh, Akaashi?”
“Yes, Bokuto-san” He steps closer to him.
“Next time we watch a movie…”
Akaashi gives him a look that takes the air out of his lungs. His eyes are soft and he lets out a breath of a laugh. “You don’t know how much I take your preferences into account, Bokuto-san. I’m grateful you tried something new for me, but next time….” they’re practically inches apart.
“We can watch something you like.”
“We do that every time” The two are whispering at their proximity.
“I’d keep watching your favorites every time.”
Bokuto’s heart is leaping out of his chest. He can’t seem to take his eyes off of the other man’s lips.
“How can I repay you?”
“Hm… I think I have an idea.” Akaashi closes the gap between them and allows their lips to slide together. Bokuto quickly wraps his arms around Akaashi and smiles profoundly into the kiss.
Akaashi couldn’t have asked for a better birthday present.
