Work Text:
They were in highschool.
It was a New Year’s Eve party.
They sat outside at the patio, hearing other people chatting and talking inside as they smoked.
Kenny could see a few fireworks shoots across the sky, before exploding into tiny little flames and lighting up the sky. The red reminds him of Kyle’s hair, and he could feel himself get warmer against the cold night.
“You know.” He started, testing the waters “I heard it’s good luck to kiss at midnight on New Year’s Eve.”
“Okay…?” Kyle took a puff of his cigarette before actually looking at him. “What? you want us to kiss or something?”
Kenny just shrugged, taking another puff of smoke.
“I dunno, for good luck.” He replied, not looking at his eyes. “Why not do it with you, you know?”
He could see Kyle going stiff, his cigarette lowering as he stared at him. “Wha- huh- why? Why me?”
“Why not? You’re my friend right? It can be just a platonic kiss, doesn’t have to mean anything.” The words hurts to say, but he wanted this. He wanted this so bad. He turned back at Kyle. “It’s just a kiss, dude. you don’t have to if you don’t wanna.”
“You- I- Ugh!” Kyle grumbled, shoving his head in his hands. Inside he could hear people counting down.

The whole thing finally sank in, and Kenny realized what he just ruined.

“I’m sorry, that was stupid.” He rubbed the back of his neck. Fuck fuck fuck what was he thinking
4
“It was” Kyle mumbles. He’s an idiot everything is ruined

“Just- forget I said anything” Kenny replied, putting out his cigarette as he stood up.

“Wait!” Kyle shot up, grabbing Kenny’s arm.

“Sorry okay I-“ Kenny apologized.
Happy new year!!
The crowd was screaming inside, fireworks were shooting everywhere around him, and yet the world felt like it didn’t matter as Kyle clashed their mouths together.
It was sudden, rough, their teeth clinked uncomfortably, but it was so real it shocked him to his bones. Yet Before Kenny could even react, Kyle pulled away.
“There.” He replied, a faint blush coloring his face Kenny wasn’t sure if it was him or the cold. “Happy new year.” Before rushing into the house.
Kenny stood there, confused, while everyone was shouting and screaming and fireworks and poppers were popping everywhere. Thank god he put on earplugs. He sank down and tucked in on himself, shoving his head between his knees.
He screwed up didn’t he.
———
“Hey” Kenny could feel Kyle bumping his shoulder as he sat down beside him again. Kenny barely heard him coming, his earplugs still snug in his ears. Does he hate me? Probably does.
He held 2 unlighted sparklers, joining Kenny watching fireworks lighting up the skies
“Want one?” Kyle said, handing him a sparkler.
“Thanks.” He replied, taking it and lighting it with his own lighter. “Here, let me-“ it’s the least he could do. Try to savor at least something.
Kenny reached over, taking Kyle’s sparkler and holding it close to his so the fire would spread, before handing it back.
“…Thanks.” Kyle replied, still staring as another firework lit up the sky.
They sat in silence for a while, watching as fireworks after fireworks was shot. Watching as their sparkles slowly ran out.
Kenny glanced at Kyle a few times, the way the fireworks light up his hair looked incredible. His eyes shined bright as the colors shifted with the lights in the sky. His sharp eyes staring straight ahead, his shoulders stiff, his jaws clenched tight.
He shoved his face back between his knees. God Kyle probably hate me. Please don’t hate me please don’t leave please please please-
“I- uh-“ Kyle finally broke the silence. This is it. Years of friendship down the drain cause he couldn’t help himself. Kenny you dumb pathetic piece of- “I wouldn’t mind doing that again, you know.”
What
“You what?” Kenny shot up, snapping his head at Kyle.
“if you want to of course!- you dont have to- I mean-“ Kyle stuttered “We could just forget about it and whatever. wouldn’t mind it’s just- “his words was cut off as Kenny smashed his lips against Kyle’s.
Their mouths actually fit perfectly this time, Kenny’s hands shoved into Kyle’s wild hair as Kyle grabbed his shoulder. It felt better, Kyle taste sweet, like cherry lip balm, but also bitter, like beer. he could hear the crowd less and less as their kiss grew deeper. Their lips moving like clockwork, perfect, right.
This is all I even wanted
When Kyle pulled away slowly, Kenny almost came with him. He shoved his whole body back though, smiling awkwardly.
Smiling, Kyle held their forehead together as he looked at him “So.” He said, voice panting slightly “wanna take this somewhere else?”
Kenny grinned, like a kid finally getting the candy they’ve been asking “hell yes.”
Happy fucking new year baby
—— years later ——
They watched as another firework lit up the dark sky.
They stayed inside, sitting on their own bed as they watch fireworks through the window. the sounds gets a little overwhelming these years. And also so they don’t wake up their kids.
Kenny leaned on his husband, barely looking at him as he spoke “You know, they said a kiss on New Year’s Eve midnight is good luck.” He smiled finally looked up.
Kyle turned around, just staring at him ”Really Ken?” He said, a soft smile on his face as he laughed at his husband’s antics. ”you just want a kiss.”
“What? I’m just saying.” He pulled back a little, a smile still plastered on his face “I want a good year this year you know.”
“You said that every year.” Kyle said, smirking.
“Well I can’t I get another good year?” Kenny replied, pouting a little “pleeasee?”
“Fine” Kyle sighed, chuckling. “Come here.”
He reached up to hold Kenny’s cheek as he joined their lips together, and Kenny could feel a different type of fireworks shooting through his brains that he never got used to.
Kyle’s hand moved to his neck, deepening the kiss, and Kenny wrapped his arms around his neck as he moaned softly.
Another firework was fired, yet they ignored it as their kiss gets heavier. Their lips moving together with ease as they fell back on the bed, barely letting that stop them before diving back in.
Happy new year to them I guess.
———
Kyle woke up to the smell of pancakes, soft music playing downstairs, and his husband missing from their bed.
Following the smell, he found his husband in the kitchen, flipping pancakes as he hummed to the music. Walking up to him, Kyle hugged him from behind, putting his head on Kenny’s shoulder as he yawned. Staying up late watching fireworks was tiring.
Kenny giggled softly, tiredness evident in his voice, “good morning babe~”
how Kenny always woke up on time to get breakfast ready? Kyle never knew. Something about his body’s alarm forcing him to always wake up early. All Kyle knew was he love him for that, even if he thinks Kenny should be getting more sleep and tries to get him to stay longer in bed.
Kyle mumbled a “morning” before turning around to kiss him on the cheek. “Smells amazing.”
“Thank you” Kenny smiled, giving him a peck on the lips. “The coffee’s done by the way.”
“I love you so much “ Kyle said as he pulled back to get his coffee
Leaning against the counter, Kyle sipped at his coffee as he watched Kenny sing along while he finished up.
“What if, I gave you my smile.
Are you gonna stay for a while?” Kenny turned to Kyle, smiling.
He just chuckled, taking another sip. he turned around and took the strawberries out of the fridge.
“What if, I put you in my dreams, tonight
Are you gonna stay until it’s bright?” Kenny sang along.
Taking out the last pancake, Kenny put some maple syrup on some of them (not all, some people are diabetic.) before putting the bowl in the sink.
“What if, I give you my story
Are you gonna listen to me?” He continues, turning around to face his husband.
“What if, I gave you my heart “ He smiled as Kyle handed him the strawberries, putting them on the pancakes before finally walking closer to his husband.
“Are we never gonna be apart?” Kenny sang as he held Kyle’s cheek.
Smiling, Kyle took the hand on his cheek before spinning him. “Come on baby, try harder” he sang while Kenny laughed
“Come on baby, light my fire” Kenny continues once he stops spinning, his crooked smile plastered on his face.
“Come on baby, be mine” Kyle sang before pulling Kenny closer by his waist.
Kyle kissed him, just a soft kiss that maybe lasted a little longer than usual. Slowly pulling back, he whispered “I love you.”
They stayed in the same position to just bask at each other for a while, Kenny holding Kyle’s face in his hands as they giggled like schoolgirls, slightly moving with the music.
Kenny had a soft smile on his face as he stared at Kyle’s sleepy green eyes, how they shine in the early morning. The way his freckles pop out more with the light and how his messy hair looks brighter and fluffier. Can’t forget his sharp jaws, looking way softergod how lucky he is to get him as a husband.
Kyle stared back at Kenny’s violet eyes, how they sparkle under the soft light, how his smile covered face send butterflies to his stomach even after years of marriage, how his scared face look softer, gentler, and how his hair shaped his face despite it being a messy birds nest this early in the morning. Good lord his husband is ethereal.
Kenny’s hands still held Kyle’s face as he finally spoke up “I love you too Kyle” before pulling him back into another kiss.
Kyle held him closer, smiling into the kiss.
The kiss lasted for a while, before getting rudely interrupted by a voice. “Really? It’s the new year and you’re still doing this.”
They finally pulled back, seeing Their son, Oliver, standing in the doorway. They just smiled sheepishly at him, still holding each other close.
He rolled his eyes at his parent’s antics before going straight for the fridge to get some milk and poured himself a glass.
Letting go of each other, Kenny reached for one of the pancake on the table.
“good morning to you too kid.” He ruffled his hair, giving him his pancakes and putting the rest on the counter.
“GOOD MORNING EVERYONE! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!” Their youngest daughter, Lexi, shouted as she ran down the stairs.
Their older daughter, Kat, walked right behind her, mumbling. “Morning.” She said, still sleepy.
Both kids found their pancakes (Lexi doesn’t like syrup) before taking it to sit on the sofa where their older brother already turned on the tv.
Kenny and Kyle chose to sit at the counter, just the two of them sitting together while their kids laughed in the background.
They wouldn’t trade this for the world.
