Summary
Mike Wheeler has been waiting for a decade, and yet every day he reckons he can wait a little longer. Everybody else moved on — but he remained unchanging. Same time, same routine, same spot where he would sit and stare at the place where he last saw El — where he last felt her touch. Ten years on, that memory is as fresh as the pain he felt when she disappeared. It’s as if he’s been stuck exactly where she left him.
A few days before the anniversary of El’s disappearance, Mike realizes he’s being watched — watched long before he even begins to piece the puzzle together. The military has been keeping an eye on him, and he can’t think of any reason except that they believe he would lead them to someone — to El. That, like him, they also believe she’s alive.
And that fragile hope is enough to ignite something inside him. If she’s alive, he’s going to get to her first — hide her from the rest of the world before they can even catch up. He’s going to find her — even if he has to search every corner of the world, every place with at least three waterfalls, just like he promised.
