Summary:

“Yeah.” Susie said, playing with the sleeve of her jacket, placing her weight on one foot. “Berdly told me that you were going to study in the library. I was wondering if I could come along. I mean, not that I’ll be doing the studying. Heh. Just wanna make sure you aren't lonely.”

In which actually paying attention to class leads Noelle to Susie.

Work Text:

As it has always been on the last hour of a friday day, the state of the classroom was nothing more than chaos. Noelle tried to keep her head down as to not get hit right on the face by one of the paper planes labeled like it was an actual plane, but it was quite hard to not be interested in the yelling Alphys was trying to do to calm the place down. She has never been a strict teacher— well, she was too shy for that— and Noelle was grateful for it, but it really got to her nerves how she couldn't even raise her voice a tiny bit at her students when she was trying to learn something that she would be asked in the exam later on. Gripping her candy cane pencil, she noted down whatever she could hear from all the mess on a piece of note paper, and turned to stare back at what was happening behind her.

There, Susie was somewhat laying down, and the plastic chair Alphys brought for her after she broke her wooden one somehow completely bending to support her weight. Ms. Alphys might’ve been quite the wuss, but she was undeniably smart when it came down to it. Somebody else doing this would’ve probably icked her out, and she would’ve whispered something about ‘no respect for teachers nowadays’ under her breath, but seeing Susie, any thoughts of shame towards the other person was replaced with shame towards herself, for letting herself get too carried away. Love was blind, after all, and she thought it would never come to her.

She picked up her candy cane pencil again, twirling her hair with the long end of it as she glared at Susie. Nothing had changed ever since the last time Noelle looked at her, which was no longer than 3 minutes ago, and she looked the same as she did yesterday, the day before & the week before. Somehow, Noelle still didn’t get tired of it. Her purple long hair rested on her shoulder, and Noelle could see small curls on the ends of it. It looked properly cared for— something you wouldn’t exactly expect from somebody like Susie— and soft. She wore a pair of baggy jean pants with rips on the knees, and a white strap shirt, covered by a purple jacket. Noelle couldn’t help but wonder what she’d look like in different clothes.

She snapped back around at the sight of Ms. Alphys glaring at her, looking like she was just about to warn her to face front. It was, unfortunately a sacrifice she had to do to keep her grades up, as to not disappoint anybody. She brought the pencil down from her hair, and looked in her bag, searching for her small notebook she bought especially for this occasion. It had a plastic, pink cover with one huge heart sticker on it. The pages were no different than the cover itself— they were pink, and had small hearts everywhere, though they were transparent just enough to let words be seen on the paper. Noelle picked up the bland note paper from earlier, transferring whatever was written on it to the pink paper, shaping her handwriting to look as great as it could be. She turned back towards Susie, reaching out as far as she could to give her the paper, which earned her a good minute of confused staring until she finally decided to just put it on her table.

“What’s this?” Susie whispered, pushing her table forward to get closer as to be heard.

“The notes I took!” She smiled, though a faint tone of stress could be heard clearly from her voice. “I thought you’d.. need it, to study for the exam, I mean. These parts will be important.”

Earning a nod from Susie before she turned her glare to Kris to nudge them quite aggressively, Noelle went back to keeping her head low, and getting whatever she could hear from Ms. Alphys onto paper. It was quite exhausting not being able to learn clearly— maybe she would ask her mom to do something about it, if she was brave enough to bring it up to her.

Soon enough, she fell victim to sleep, resting her head on the table, messy hair covering her face.

“..elle!” The voice was distant, though not too far. “Noelle! Psst, get up!”

She whimpered, lifting her head up. There was an unpleasant taste in her mouth from just having woken up, and she could physically feel how frizzy her hair was as she rubbed her eyes to make out who the purple blob standing right in front of her was. “What..? “

“School’s over, sleepyhead.” The girl— Susie— grinned. “I wanted to say uh, thanks. For the notes.”

“Err.” Noelle froze for a moment before looking down to hide how red her face looked from Susie. Who could blame her? “You’re welcome, Susie! Um.. I wouldn’t want you to fail the exam.”

“Sure!” Noelle giggled at the other girl’s embarrassment. “I could use some company.” She pulled her phone out, opening her messages app and entering ‘mom’s channel, as Susie stood, staring at her text.

The library was empty other than Susie and Noelle. They made their way towards the computer room, sitting down on chairs placed right next to each other. Noelle pulled out her notebook from her bag. It was a blue, rather big one compared to the other one. Inside, it had all these notes that hurt to stare at from how complicated it all looked to Susie. Somehow, Noelle had no problem figuring them out, getting right to reading them.

“What is this?” Susie said, tilting her head to the side.

“Uh.. maths..?” The girl next to her giggled, pushing the notebook towards Susie’s side so she could look.

“Where the hell are the numbers?” Susie complained, “What sort of maths is this?”

“Well, um, they aren’t completely gone.” She said, awkward smile on her face as she pointed at the title, right on top of the page. “It’s trigonometry. Did you not listen in class?”

Hell,” Susie said, laughing as she doodled on the corner of the paper with one of Noelle’s pencils that she took without her noticing. “You think I’d listen to this being taught?”

“I mean, it’s quite important!” She said, pointing at one of the questions with her pencil. “How else would you get into college?”

“Do you need to know these to get into college..?” Susie groaned, tilting her head.

“Your grades have to be good. Well, at least if you’re aiming for a great college.”

“Jesus.” Susie said, pulling the notebook to be right in front of her. “What the hell does cos mean?”

“The ratio of the adjacent side to the hypotenuse.” Noelle stated, “Do you not.. know the basics?”

“I don’t know shit.” She said, smirking. “Sorry, Noelle. I’m just being a burden to deal with here.”

“What— no! Don’t say that..” Noelle pushed her arms out in the air, “I’ll help you! So, it’s really all about triangles, you know, it’s in the name. Trigonometry. You only called out cos, but there’s sin and tan as well, which are—”

Susie huffed, placing her head on Noelle’s shoulder. “Let’s do literally anything else.” She said, holding Noelle’s hand and guiding it to lightly go over the notes.

Noelle froze. Her voice was weak as she answered, a red flush covering her face. “Um. Do you.. not want to study for the exam..? I thought you.. that’s why we came here..”

“Nah.” She giggled, “Let’s go get a slushie.” Susie stood up, packing her bag and making her way towards the door. “So, are you coming or not?”

“Yeah, um, just hold on a minute.” Noelle put her notebook back in her bag, running to catch up to Susie.

Her mom was going to be so disappointed in her.
