“Teresa.”, Jane said in a teasing voice, clicking his tongue twice. “Kissing at work?” His thumbs moved over her ribs and the warmth of his hands made goosebumps erupt on her skin. “What's next? Hooking up in-”

Chapter 1: six

Chapter Text

The grass was still wet with morning dew as Jane and Lisbon made their way down from their car to the lush riverbed, droplets of water clinging to the hem of their pants and wetting their shoes. Warm sunshine slightly peaked through the trees and threw shapes of shadows on the ground. It almost seemed peaceful, and with the rushing of the river filtering out all noises of the outside world it reminded Lisbon of their cabin at the lake.

If it weren’t for the body sprawled out at the edge of the riverbed, legs still in the clear water as the upper body lay on the bright green grass.

From where they were standing, neither Jane nor Lisbon could see the victim’s face, could only guess that it was a woman from the long hair and the floral pattern dress she was wearing. A second later the police chief of the local PD covered the body with a black tarp and then went back up the small hill to her car, where her officers were waiting for orders.

“If the coroner takes any longer I’m going to freak out.”, Lisbon said as she turned her face away from the body and towards Jane, who was already looking at her with a soft smile. “Patience, my dear.”, he lectured with a playfulness that Lisbon knew and had her stepping closer to him. She smiled and raised a dark brow. “I’ll remind you of that later.”, she mused and took a quick peek at her phone.

Nobody from her team had shown up yet, and besides her and Jane there were only a few officers of the local PD on scene. She wasn’t even sure yet why exactly the FBI had been called to take over this case, and there wasn’t anyone around yet to tell her. Sure, she could call Cho and ask her new boss why exactly she and Jane had been ordered here, but Lisbon still felt the relaxation of her honeymoon in her bones and wasn’t going to ask for more stress than which she was going to have anyway.

Jane watched her with quiet amusement and his eyes lit up as Lisbon took another step towards him and put her hand on his chest, right over his heart. Her ring was glinting in the stray sunrays and he couldn’t fight the smile as she looked up to him.

Her freckles were darker than he had ever seen them and her skin glowed with a slight tan, and to his delight he was the only one that knew that her bikini had left a faint line on her skin, no matter how often he had put sunscreen on her. Three weeks in the sun had left their mark, also on him. Jane’s own hair was a tad bit lighter than before, and his skin was darker as well - though not as dark as it had been when he had freshly returned from Venezuela.

“Hey.”, he said softly, and put his hands under Lisbon’s blazer on her waist. “Hey.”, she echoed and let her eyes wander over his chest, which, to her joy, was wrapped in one of his vests. Just like it had been every day since she had told him of her preference

She didn’t need to use words as she looked up at her husband again and bit her lip slightly. From the weeks away, where he had tried to wear a vest as often as possible and had been rewarded generously each time, Jane knew exactly what she was thinking about, what she was trying to tell him.

“You are wicked, Teresa.”, he stated with a low voice, his grip on her waist tightening ever so slightly. She smiled at him in the way that made him breathless and brought her other hand to his nape to rake through his curls. A shiver ran down his spine and he instinctively pulled her closer.

Lisbon couldn’t help herself, couldn’t contain the urge to touch Jane. Not after three weeks of having him all to herself, of touching and kissing him whenever and wherever she wanted, of not holding back. She had been drunk on him, his touch and his smell. And not being able to do that, well, it made her feel like she was going through withdrawal.

It had been bad enough the day prior, when they had first returned to the office and had to remember how to act. Or when Wylie had asked them if they had enjoyed their time alone, which had earned him a “Why would you ask that?” from Cho while Lisbon had blushed profusely and Jane had just grinned and nodded.

Still, Lisbon did what she had promised to never do, and stood on her tiptoes to press a quick kiss onto Jane’s lips. He didn’t even have time to react before she pulled back again, a faint blush creeping to her cheeks at the, for her standards, reckless action.

“Teresa.”, Jane said in a teasing voice, clicking his tongue twice. “Kissing at work?” His thumbs moved over her ribs and the warmth of his hands made goosebumps erupt on her skin. “What's next? Hooking up in-” She used her hand resting on his chest to lightly swat at him. “Shut up.”, she mumbled and watched as Jane's grin widened and his dimples appeared.

Since the day they had met back at the CBI she had adored his smile, the way it made his whole face light up and made him look like the sun. And having that smile directed at her, knowing that she was responsible for that smile, it made her feel gooey and warm all over.

A few seconds passed of them just holding each other close - Lisbon was suddenly rather thankful that everyone seemed to be delayed, before Jane brought one of his hands up to brush a loose curl behind Lisbon’s ear and cup her cheek. He tilted her head back slightly and covered her mouth with his own, their lips moving in sync as his tongue followed the seam of her lips. Her hand in his hair tightened and she opened her mouth to grant his tongue access in whatever way he pleased.

The sound of an approaching car and doors slamming closed made them pull apart slowly, and as Lisbon spotted Vega walking towards them she quickly pressed another kiss onto Jane’s lips before fully parting with him and turning towards the nearing agent.

Vega had been at their wedding, after all. And even though Lisbon had been the one to insist on separating their private life and work, she figured that the world wouldn’t end if someone saw them share affection from time to time now that they were married. It wouldn’t be long until she was pushing around a bowling ball in front of her body anyways - no point in pretending they were celibate.

“Sorry, guys.”, Vega said as she came to a stop before them, putting her hands on her hips as she took in the crime scene. Her dark ponytail swung from left to right with each turn of her head. “Cho had to tell me something at the office.”

Lisbon nodded with a barely contained smile and pointed towards the body, and the three of them started walking towards the black tarp and the victim beneath, Jane’s hand everpresent at the small of her back.
