It’s such a cliche to ask, “What are we?” but Taeyong has to know. This was originally written July 2021 and posted on twitter for a "tell me your favorite fic of mine and I'll write a bonus scene for it" challenge. I just rediscovered it and figured it should live on ao3 too.

Work Text:

“What are we?”

It’s such a cliche question to ask, but Taeyong has to know. He and Doyoung and Jaehyun have been sleeping together for years now—first just in a casual hookup sort of way, but more recently literally just sleeping together, crammed into Taeyong’s bed and cuddled up together, almost every night. Their kisses have long since progressed past the point of merely being foreplay to getting each other off. They’ve been kissing for the sake of kissing—to say “good morning”, to say “good night”, to say “I love you”—for longer than Taeyong can calculate.

But they’ve never had this conversation. Maybe they would have, if it were only two of them, but three people? In one relationship? Is that really an option?

Taeyong would like it to be.

Jaehyun presses his face into Taeyong’s neck, kissing his throat and mumbling something so muffled that Taeyong has no idea what he said.

Smiling wryly, Taeyong strokes a hand through Jaehyun’s hair and waits for him to emerge and repeat himself. He’s always been soft and sweet, and sometimes it takes him two tries to say what he really means.

But Doyoung answers first. From Taeyong’s other side, his arms slide around Taeyong to rest on Jaehyun’s shoulders. “Well, we’re in love, aren’t we?” he says matter-of-factly.

Heat rushes to Taeyong’s face. None of them have ever said it aloud, not so frankly. But it’s true, isn’t it? “Yeah,” he agrees, then looks at Jaehyun. “Aren’t we?”

Jaehyun sighs into Taeyong’s neck, pulls away to smile at them, eyes soft and warm and happy. “Yeah. We’re in love.”

Taeyong kisses him, hands cradling his face like it’s the most precious treasure—and isn’t it? Then he turns around to kiss Doyoung too, and Doyoung’s fingers twine into the hair at the nape of his neck, holding him close. Holding him dear.

“So we’re boyfriends then?” asks Jaehyun. “Right?”

Doyoung reaches around Taeyong to tug Jaehyun into his embrace as well. “I would like that,” he murmurs, and Taeyong’s heart swells with joy.

“My boyfriends,” he tries saying, and yes, he likes the way that sounds very much.

Jaehyun laughs, tone fond and full of feeling. “So what does that mean?” he asks. “If we’re boyfriends now, like… what changes?”

Doyoung leans forward to kiss his nose. It’s unspeakably tender. “I don’t think anything changes,” he whispers and smooths his thumb over Jaehyun’s cheek. “I kind of think we were already boyfriends, even before we had this talk.”

Taeyong is inclined to agree. But— “We’ll have to tell our managers, won’t we?” he realizes aloud.

You never really get to keep any secrets as an idol, not from your mangers, especially not something as potentially juicy as three members of the same group all dating each other.

Jaehyun snorts. “You’ve vastly overestimated our ability to be subtle around the dorm and in the practice room if you think our manages don’t already have some idea about the nature of our relationship.”

“Oh, yeah, there’s no way they don’t already suspect that we’re all fucking, if nothing else,” agrees Doyoung. He nudges Taeyong playfully. “Haven’t you gotten a lecture on making sure we’re always discreet in public, or are only Jaehyunnie and I that lucky?”

Taeyong thinks back to some of the more ambiguously-worded reminders about propriety and discretion he’s gotten over the years, and oh my god, yeah, their managers definitely know. He covers his face with his hands. “Wow, I’m an idiot.”

Jaehyun pulls his hands away from his face, kissing each finger as he goes. “You’re not an idiot,” he says soothingly.

At the same time, Doyoung kisses his temples and murmurs, “Yeah, but you’re our idiot.”
