Summary:

Teddy Lupin has never met Harry Potter.

He doesn’t know James Potter. Doesn’t know Regulus. He doesn’t even know what the Potter boy’s name is.

Teddy was told excuses for why James never was around. His dad did, his Father did, but the truth was that James moved away and didn’t keep contact.

Regulus escaped and didn’t look back. He left as soon as he could and met James.

However, it wouldn’t be forever.

Or, Teddy meets Harry. He does not know who he is.

Work Text:

Teddy tugged his luggage behind him, cursing his weak muscles.

“Teddy, do you have everything?” His dad called out.

He nodded, slamming the trunk closed. “Yeah, I should.”

His father appeared behind his dad, a mug of coffee in his hands. “Alright. Your friends are helping you move in?”

“Yeah, Ren and I are just a room apart and she’s already moved in.” Teddy walked up to his parents, squeezing his father first, and then his dad, who picked him up with the hug.

Sirius Lupin brushed some of Teddy’s loose blue curls away from his face where the wind had forced them and gave his forehead a kiss. Remus Lupin ruffled his hair, emitting a loud ‘Father, stop!’ from Teddy.

“Visit often. I will call you every friday and if you decline the call you better have a good reason for it. Be safe,” his dad fussed.

His father pulled Teddy in for a hug once more. “Love you, kid. Come back whenever you want to.”

“And every other weekend!” dad added.

Teddy smiled and hugged them both quickly again, before getting into his car.

. . .

“Edward!” Ren called out from her car.

Teddy flipped her off. “Florence.”

“Ew, fuck off!” She ran up and gave Teddy a hug. Her bright pink hair whipped in the wind, slapping Teddy’s face. “Did my favorite dad say hello?”

“Yes, he said hello.” It was a joke between Teddy, Ren, and Remus that Ren was his favorite child.

She smiled, jumping up and down. “We’re in university, Ted! Who the fuck let you in?”

He laughed, opening the trunk to his car. “I have no fucking clue. They’re going to regret it though.”

“Hell yeah they are.”

Teddy carried a tote of clothes into the dorm, Ren next to him groaning as she carried a box with stationary in it.

He got to the dorm and as he opened it, Teddy realized that there was already someone in it. His roommate.

“Don’t smoke. It's a nasty habit. If I see you with a vape, I will disown you.” A voice said. The two turned as Teddy entered with Ren behind him.

His roommate had deep skin and pitch black hair and thick curls. His eyes were a curious silver, with round glasses stuck at the end of his nose.

The man with him seemed to be his father. His hair was like the boys, if not a little less curly. His skin was pale, and they had the same silver. He wore a black cardigan, baggy black jeans, and a band shirt. “Bye. Good luck. Keep your sister from killing anyone.”

Teddy set his box down on the empty bed. “Hi.”

“Hi.” The boy watched him for a moment. “I like your hair.”

“Thanks!” Teddy grinned.

Ren sighed, starting to open the box. “Ted, why exactly do you need fifty thousand books?”

“Father said that just because I’m an adult doesn’t mean I’m getting away from his screentime limits,” Teddy huffed, before turning back to the boy. “My name's Teddy.”

The boy nodded. “Harry.”

“Teddy James, come on, let's go! My roommate is actually cool, I don’t want to have to hang out with you all day.”

He rolled his eyes but followed her.

. . .

After getting fully moved in, he got a call from his dad.

“You said every Friday.”

“Details, details,” Sirius muttered. “How's Ren? The roommate? Ren’s roommate?”

“She’s good. I think she likes her roommate.”

“And yours?”

Teddy sighed. “Good. It's good.”

“Classes start Monday, right?” he asked, as if he hadn’t memorized it.

“Yes, dad. Ren was complaining about the books Father sent me with.”

Sirius laughed. “Of course she did, it was half of his bloody bookshelf!”

“You’re just mad I like to read like him.”

”uh-uh!” Sirius laughed. “I’m glad you’re settling in okay. I love you. Tell me if I’m being overbearing. Peter said I was.”

Teddy grinned. “Tell uncle Pete that I like him more than you. Make sure he knows I said Pete.” Peter hated being called Pete. He said it made him feel like an old creep with a beer-belly.

“Okay. bye, love you.”

“Love you too, dad.”

. . .

Ren barged into his room while he had his noise-canceling headphones on, meaning the only person she terrorized was poor Harry.

“EDWARD!” she screamed as she lifted his headphones.

“Fuck you, Florence.”

“I hate you.” Ren draped herself over his lap. “Twink, can we hang out? Let's hang out.”

Teddy sighed. “One, not a twink, two, Harry is trying to study, three, I’m trying to study, and four, are you already tipsy? On a Monday? Classes just ended!”

“You’re so boring!” Ren groaned. “Harry, are you this boring? Harry’s not this boring.”

“Ren, stop bringing that poor boy into this and get your ass out of my dorm!”

“I don’t mind,” Harry murmured. “My friends are all at different schools.”

Ren smirked. “See, Eddy? Hazzy is fine with it!”

“I hate you so much, Floral.” Teddy dumped her into the chair and climbed into his bed, but Ren just followed. “Don’t call him ‘Hazzy’.”

A smile played at the corners of Harry’s lips, but both Harry and Teddy’s phones rang.

They both picked them up at the same time.

“Dad, you called yesterday,” Teddy said, unimpressed.

“Sure, sure. How were classes?”

Ren stole his phone. “Hi Dad!”

“Hi Ren baby!” Sirius shouted back. “Are you tipsy?”

“Hell yeah! Woo!” she called out.

Sirius chuckled. “I’ll let you go. And don’t leave Harry out. Tell him you and Ren aren't dating. Kay?”

“Sure. bye dad, love you.”

“Love you too.”

Harry was still on the phone. “Papa… si, si, give dad the phone… I’ll be fine. Tell him to stop talking to my friends… I do not need either of you doing that, actually. Shut up. I know you’re going to anyway… yes yes, ‘it let to my marriage’ do not care. Love you. Bye.”

“...do I want to know?”

“My dad stalked my papa into a relationship.”

Teddy blinked before grinning. “Do you have gay parents? I have gay parents!"

“Huh,” Harry smiled.

“I have lesbian parents!” Ren yelled out.

Teddy shoved her away. “Yes we know, you inherited it from them.”

“You got the gay from yours.”

Harry blinked owlishly at the door as someone entered, before grinning. “Sol!”

“Yeah, yeah.”

The girl had the same deep tan skin as him, and silver eyes. Her hair was curly, but had streaks of white dyed into it. She wore a deepcut black top, with thick gold hoops hanging from her ears.

“It's me, the fun one,” she said, dead-pan. “Ren, are you coming? Everyone's waiting.”

“Sol, you know her?” Harry asked, confused.

Ren scoffed, getting down from the bed. “Teddy, get out of my way, I’m hanging out with my cool friends.”

“Yeah, her roommate is Lavender.”

Harry rolled his eyes, to which she grabbed something out of her pocket and threw it at him. It hit him right in the face, making him wince. “Shut up. I’m Soleil, Haz’s twin sister.”

“...huh.” Teddy watched as she left. “She seems—”

“Completely different? We’re actually not that different,” Harry admitted, “I’m just an introvert and she's an extrovert.”

Teddy nodded. “I get you. What's it like to have a sibling? I couldn’t imagine living with Ren.”

“Are you… not dating?” Harry asked, nonplussed.

“I told her the tv girl hair was too couple-y,” Teddy murmured. “nah, she’s my best friend. Love her, could not date her.”

Harry shrugged. “Fair. One of my friends, Hermione, is like a sister to me. Everyone thought we were going to get together though.”

“Oh, the joys of shipping children.”

His roommate laughed, a startled one that seemed to surprise him. “I didn’t expect to actually get along with you. I dunno, I always kind of have strong opinions on people. Or they have strong feelings on me.”

Teddy smiled softly. “I’m glad we’re friends.”

“Same.”

. . .

Ren handed Harry a coffee cup as she slid into the car. “Okay, we’re going to roam around the mall for a round two hours, and then we will pick up the two things we actually need. Harry, this is your second friendship test.” Teddy nodded along sagely with her words, making Harry snort.

“What was the first?”

“Dealing with drunk Ren and me,” Teddy said, letting Ren nod sagely this time.

“You two are just… exactly the same!” Harry groaned. “How?”

Soleil slipped into the carseat next to her brother. “They’re best friends. They’ve learned the exact way each other moves and have started mimicking each other. It's human psychology.”

“Shes smart,” Ren said, only to be cut off as Teddy’s phone rang. She grinned. “New test! Your next test will be the most important one: talking with Dad and Father Wolf.”

“...sorry, who?”

Teddy sighed. “My dads. Our last name means ‘Wolf’.” He answered, setting it on speaker.  “Hello, Dad.”

“Ted! I’m surprised you answered,” Sirius remarked. “I was wondering where you left that fucking cakepan.”

“You’re on speaker. Say hi.”

Ren grinned wider. They all chimed out a ‘Hi’.

“Those are new voices! You actually made friends, wow.” Sirius laughed. “What’re their names?”

Teddy gestured for Harry to speak. “I’m Harry. Teddy’s roommate.”

“I’m his twin, Soleil.”

Sirius was quiet for a moment. “Twins? Wow.”

“I left the cakepan in my closet.”

“Edward James Lupin, why the fuck is the cakepan in your closet?” His father sighed in the background. “He’s torn up the bloody kitchen looking for it.”

Soleil and Harry gasped. “Your name is Edward? Holy shit.”

“I know, right?” Ren grinned.

“Vampire from twilight ass name,” Soleil poked him with a long acrylic nail.

Harry picked up his own phone. “Papa?... No, I didn’t. Dad definitely has it… No, he doesn’t have a use for it, but he definitely took it from you. I’ll call you later to talk.”

“What did dad steal from papa this time?”

“Papa’s favorite fountain pen.”

Soleil laughed.

“Okay, I’ll let you go.” Sirius huffed after bickering with both Remus and Teddy at the same time. “Bye, love you.”

“Tell my favorite dad I said hello!” Ren called out.

Sirius sighed. “Remus, Ren said to tell you she hates you.”

“Love you too, my favorite girl!”

Ren clapped her hands. “Let's get shopping!”

. . .

In the end, they spent three hours at the mall and got only a shit-ton of hair dye and bleach.

They sat in the dorm bathrooms and dyed each other's hair. Teddy’s orange, Soleil’s hair was re-bleached, Ren’s was turned into blonde, and Harry got a portion of his bangs a deep red color.

. . .

“Today is the most exciting test,” Ren announced. “Today, you’re not only meeting Edward and mine’s parents, but we’re also meeting yours.”

“Only one,” Harry added.

Ren smirked. “Well, that's true for you and dearest Ted, but you get to meet both of my parents. Mama Marlene and Mama Dorcus.”

“Don’t even worry. It's going to explain a lot about our dear Ren.”

Ren slowly got more and more fidgety, until finally, a car drove into the lot they were parked in. Out bounded a blonde from the passengers side, followed by a black woman with long braids in a ponytail.

“Ren, baby!” Marlene smiled, her eyeliner still firmly in place. Teddy had never seen it off. “And my Edward!”

Teddy let himself be hugged by Marlene. It was energetic and warm, quick but the perfect length.

She turned to Harry and Soleil, and frowned. “Dorcus, they look similar.”

Dorcus looked away from where she was hugging Ren. “oh. They look like Siri.”

“No, the eyes are off. I know those eyes.” Marlene snapped her fingers, like she was trying to think. “Love, help me.”

“I do not know what you want me to do,” Dorcus shrugged, swooping in to hug Teddy. “You dyed your hair again, I see. Did everything we taught you?”

Teddy nodded, and she smiled. “Good. Minimal hair damage.”

“Er, everyone says that I have my dads eyes?” Harry offered.

Marlene narrowed her eyes. “Show me a photo, perhaps.”

“Stop tacking on ‘perhaps’, Marlene,” Dorcus smiled.

“I’ll do what I want.” Her eyes widened at the photo on Harry’s screen just as a car pulled up. Out stepped Remus Lupin.

He was a tall man, and his scars made Harry visibly pale. His cane was decorated with doodles that Sirius had drawn on and stickers that Ren and Teddy had bought. He wore a grandpa sweater and a baggy pair of black jeans.

“Lupin, look at who Harry’s dad is.” Marlene thrusted the phone into Remus’ face.

“Shit.”

. . .

It took a second, but eventually Harry’s dad drove into the lot. Marlene and Dorcus had taken a liking to Soleil, while Remus listened quietly to Harry’s rants about books.

Out of the car stepped Regulus Black.

“I’m late, I see.” he said as everyone watched him. He slid his sunglasses from his face as Soleil and Harry walked up to accept a kiss on the forehead.

He murmured something in French to them, and they both answered back. Regulus sighed and held his hand out for Ren to shake.

Teddy was shocked by the fact that Regulus looked so much like Sirius. Sure, his father had a scraggily beard, and longer hair, but Regulus had the same build. Their eyes even looked similar.

“Regulus,” Remus greeted. “Its been a while.”

Regulus’ frown grew. “Remus, yes? He really stayed with you.”

“I’m surprised too.”

The man finally faced Teddy. Teddy, with his bright orange hair, and cardigan, and way too tall boots.

“Teddy?”

He nodded, and Regulus’ face softened a little. “Hi. I’m your uncle.”

. . .

Sirius arrived thirty minutes later. The others left to give him and his brother privacy.

Marlene had not stopped talking loudly with everyone. Teddy was quiet, and Remus had an arm around him. It almost felt peaceful.

When they finally were called back, both of the brothers looked like they had been crying. Sirius laughed when he saw them.

“Guess who else has been hiding away from us? James Potter.”

The parents left quietly, quickly.

“I’m your cousin,” Soleil said softly.”

Teddy nudged her with a shoulder. “Welcome.”

. . .

New years were spent at Ren's house. This was always the case.

Until they started to happen at Harry’s.

James Potter and Harry were surprisingly alike. Regulus and James definitely had imbued both of themselves into the boy.

As the new year hit, with Ren slopily kissing the side of Teddy’s face, Soleil and Harry’s cheers around him, it felt truly like home.
