“Of a potential future, yes. There is no ‘The Future’ just a whole lot of possibilities waiting to be explored.” Iris gestured towards the tree, “Like a tree branching out in different directions.”
Crystal thought for a moment, “So I could change it?”

Summary
Crystal’s fingers are aching. Maybe it’s from how long she’s been holding them still to let the polish dry, but they feel restless; like she wants to curl them around something, do something, make something with them—
Okay, that feeling’s not new. It’s probably not the polish. It keeps cropping up in Crystal’s mind, usually when something good is happening, like she can’t just let herself live in the moment. Like it’s too much to just feel. She has to make it permanent somehow; make it immortal.
“Hey, Niko?” Crystal asks, waiting until Niko pauses the show and turns towards her to continue. “Do you have any paper?”

“Niko?” She yells it as loud as she can, enough that her throat hurts with it, but her voice is muffled by the snow and stolen by the wind. “Are you here?”
The only reply is the rising scream of the storm. Crystal wonders if she would even be able to hear Niko’s response, if by some miracle she’s nearby. She calls her friend’s name again and again, even as her fingers go numb and her voice grows ragged. “I don’t know what hold this winter wonderland bullshit has on you, but I’m here to take you home!”
