With great effort, he blinks, taking in streams of light through tired, mostly unused, eyes. He sees the texture of the old green sofa, a prismatic reflection across the lightly colored wooden floor. He smells chai, saffron and coffee, laundry detergent. He feels static crackling in his body, discipline and peace overtaking any pain or discomfort.
He’s been kneeling next to her for what feels like both 15 seconds and 30 years. In all actuality, it’s been about 45 minutes, but there’s no way in which Frank Langdon could ever tell time when her hand is placed so delicately on the top of his head.

She heard Frank’s sharp intake of breath. When he next spoke, she could hear the frown in his voice.
“Robby, I’m- please, I’m sorry, man.”
She didn't know what exactly Frank was begging for. She just knew she didn't like it when he sounded like this.
“Then do better.”
For a second, Heather thought she may have misheard. Robby wouldn’t- Robby would never speak to anyone like that. But then again, Frank was never just ‘anyone’ to him.
