Summary
childhood friends James Rhodes and Tony Stark have never met in person. Instead, they use what Tony calls the Shine to communicate with each other.
As they grew up, their Shine diminished and they lost touch with each other, and in time assumed the other was nothing more than a figment of their imagination.
After countless fuck ups and tragedies, Tony ends up as a hospice worker in a small town. He uses his Shine to ease people into death and soothe their worries, earning him the peculiar title of Doctor Sleep.
It takes just one more tragedy for him to be reunited with his childhood friend, James Rhodes.

Oh? Not quite inherited from Maria. Might have looked like it at the start, but by age 9 Howard says Tony's eyes are too sharp, too bright. Too blue.
Then again, he also compares it to Rogers' eyes so he might just be blabbering aroundI'm curious if his eye color is related to the Tesseract/Space Stone. I mean I assume similarly to canon, Howard played around with it and there's a high chance it was still happening around the time Tony was born
I could just be overcomplicating things purely because the idea that there's nothing truly unnatural with his eye color yet the fic fixates on it so much is ridiculous to me and unlogicalSide note had no clue who the fuck Zeke was. Thank fuck for characters tagged. I think I vaguely remember Stane having a son, even if not in the MCU. Seeing the family name helped me connect the dots
Put on brown contacts a month after his parents died (January 1992)
Gaslighted everything (the press) that he had brown eyes as far as he can remember, sure he had blue eyes when he was a baby like basically everything but that's it in November 1993 (Rhodney obviously noticed immediately)
Huh neat about the early Stephen interactions. Friends with benefits. Tony shows him his eye color (because health reasons if they're going to be keep spending so much time together) in October 2002
Pepper finds out in February 2004 by walking in on him mid putting contacts
A hookup of Tony finds out in August 2006, she's super chill about it which is nice
Uncertain if he was told/found out beforehand, but in May 2008 Happy is aware of Tony's contacts
In June 2008 Tony is debating if it's even worth it. Doesn't know if it wasn't just another manipulation from Stane (his words did kinda impact him and made him decide using the contacts)
In May 2010 Pepper reminds Tony he doesn't have to keep up the brand of brown eyed Tony, especially as he's no longer the CEO. Tony doesn't think it's a good idea, could still cause outlash
May 2012 Natasha finds out, which uh misunderstanding because recent scepter experience
June 2012 Tony accidentally tells Bruce, who's super chill about it acting like nothing happened
April 2013 the Keeners find out, they're chill bout it
July 2014, Rogers you can fuck off
May 2015, Tony learns (?) Wilson knows about his contacts
July 2016, as result of Siberia and the damage (ty Stephen for saving Tony) Tony can't wear the contacts for a while. Rhodney suggests it might be time to let them go for good. Tony will think about it
August 2016, Tony shows the Parkers his eye color. And damn if May isn't relentless
No long after that (still August 2016) Tony accidentally goes out with the kids without his contacts
December 2016 Tony decides to start 2017 without his contacts
