Carefully, he unballs his fists and pushes off the ground. He feels unsteady on his feet, and stands in the darkness for a moment, silently wiping the wetness off his face.
He’s had nightmares for years. This shouldn’t be new.
And yet it is.
This complete lack of ability to remember reality and dismiss memory. What-ifs… they simply didn’t matter. They couldn’t matter, in his line of work. They couldn’t matter on the streets; they couldn’t matter on a navy ship; and they couldn’t matter in day-to-day surgery.
