characters actually being competent
A collection of works where the characters are actually competent, as they would realistically be in the circumstances that they are in, or, with the experience that they have through their story.
This all started because I kept getting frustrated whenever characters are written into the damsel trope a bit to hard, when within the story it is does not make sense for that character to be.

Plagg can't actually remember what it feels like to have a holder who admires rather fears him. It's happened before, he knows, because that's how it was in the beginning. That's how it's meant to be. But literal civilizations have sprouted, blossomed, and withered away in the time since Plagg last got to choose his own Black Cat.
Plagg didn't get to choose this newest holder, either, but it's clear they were made for each other. After all, Marinette Dupain-Cheng is a walking catastrophe.

Wave changed a lot about Team 7, but not enough to make them entirely functional. Also someone should have really reminded Kakashi to pay attention to that tiny part of his genius brain that recognises random patterns, before he called a rest stop on the way home on top of an old, decayed Uzushio travel seal with an over-chakra-charged Uzumaki.
And he thought the month of the Wave mission was long, now he's stuck with the team, in a place he never expected to have anything to do with, with no way back.
Maybe he should have paid more attention to history, or stayed in the academy long enough to have history classes.Series

Grog may not have been able to read written words, but he was fluent in the language of scars. Just by looking at them he could picture the battles people had been through to get them. But even he had trouble figuring out what some of Percy's meant.

Summary
Everyone says that the guards are incompetent.
It's important to remember that everyone assumed Merlin was incompetent too.
It's amazing what you can get away with if everyone assumes you can't do any better.
