“Harry,” Severus sighed, coming to stand next to him. “What did I say about having the snake at the breakfast table?”
“Her name isn’t “the snake,” Harry murmured resentfully. Severus had gotten Noodle at the request of Dumbledore, but he obviously wasn’t the biggest fan of Harry’s new friend.
“Danger Noodle,” Severus said through gritted teeth, “needs to be put away while your classmates are trying to eat.”
“I’m sorry,” Harry sighed. “I just wanted everyone to meet her. It’s her first day and she’s really shy!”
“I highly doubt she can feel such a complex emotion as shyness, given that she is a reptile-” Harry moved his hands to cover Noodle’s nonexistent ears, glaring at his father’s lack of sensitivity, “- but even so, I’m sure she’ll be quite alright if you put her in your pocket while you eat your breakfast.”
“But- that feels so mean. And she’s hungry. You're going to your office now, aren’t you? Couldn’t you take her with you? She needs her rats.”
Severus stared at Harry, likely trying to surmise if he was being serious. Despite being a Slytherin, it had become quite clear in the past few days that Severus was not at all fond of snakes.

Professor Snape snorted, though he tried to cover it up with a cough as Harry sometimes attempted to do with his giggles. He would take that as a no, then.

“You’re not his legal guardian,” Albus offered bluntly. “While you have done a lot for him, you are certainly in no way responsible for his welfare.”
Severus glared. “Legally speaking, no, but otherwise of course I am responsible for him! I am the one who took him from that wretched home, the one who has been there through nightmares and medical visits and-“
“My, my, Severus. Could it be that you are jealous?”

It was still a touchy subject, then.

Severus may have kind of, sort of, inadvertently yet possibly purposely murdered Harry's teddy bear. So he does what any decent Potions Professor/Psycho Guardian Angel would do and replaces it, obviously. Whether or not it's enough for Harry to forgive him remains to be seen.

Harry threw his head back over his shoulder, looking the man up and down once more. He seemed innocent enough. It was just his name, after all. They were neighbors. No harm in it.
“It’s Harry,” he said finally. “Harry Potter.”
OR
Neglect can be one of the most painful forms of abuse, being ignored by your guardians when all you want is love hurts. No one seems to care if Harry lives or dies so he spends a lot of time wandering around Little Whinging on his own. His friendly neighbor seems to think that this is dangerous. If only someone paid enough attention to Harry to tell him that his neighbor is a little too friendly...
OR
“This smells fishy,” Severus muttered out loud.
“Fishy?” Harry questioned, wrinkling his nose as if sniffing the air. “It doesn’t smell fishy to me.”
Oh, sweet Merlin, the first years could still be so sweet and precious and Severus was going to kill the son of a bitch who had stolen the innocence from this one.
