Lena's lavish, fast-paced lifestyle drastically changes one snowy Christmas night when she unwittingly stumbles into the middle of a grocery store holdup and in a bold display of self-preservation disarms the gunman.
The next morning she wakes up in a suburban Midvale bedroom lying next to Kara, her college sweetheart who she left in order to pursue her career, and to the horrifying discovery that her former life no longer exists.
As she stumbles through this alternate suburban universe, Lena begins to feel strangely comfortable in this new role of loving wife and mother to two children. Lena finds herself at a crossroad, where she must choose between her high-powered career and the woman she loves.

“I mean, nothing else is working, and that thing the doctor said about my memory coming back on its own is complete bull—”
“Lena, keep your voice down!” Kara hissed nervously, afraid that their raised voices might make their way up to the nursery.
“Make me!” Lena snarled.--
Snobbish and wealthy Helena Luthor Lord lived a (miserable) life of luxury and leisure with her husband Maxwell Lord, until she fell off their yacht and suffered amnesia. Taking the opportunity to rid himself of his demanding wife, Maxwell Lord left Helena in a mental institution with no clue as to who she is--until a complete stranger arrives claiming that (He)Lena is the wife of Kara Danvers, a widowed carpenter with four kids living in the sleepy little town of Midvale. As time passes, the Ruse becomes harder and harder to keep up, as both Kara and her friends and family start to see less of the woman who had fired Kara so heartlessly, and fall more in love with the kind and fierce woman she's become.

The longer Lena stands in her bedroom, her still-wet hair slowly dripping onto the hardwood, the more she wonders whether screaming will make her feel any better. She’s been waiting for this phone call for the last twenty-four hours and now she's staring at the missed call banner. Somehow she already knows that calling back isn’t going to work out in her favor, so instead she closes her eyes and clicks on the voicemail.
“Hi Lena, this is Kara Danvers! I got your messages, all seven of them. I’m so sorry that we didn’t have a chance to sit down this week in person, although it sounds like you’ve had your hands full at work. I have some stuff I need to take care of before we leave, so I’ll have to meet you at the airport. Since I’m cutting it a little close, I’ll send a courier to pick up my ticket from you this afternoon. And Lena? Take a deep breath. This is all going to be fine. Your ex-fiancée will wish she’d never left you and your family will think we’re in love. Trust me. Look, I’ve got to go, but I’ll see you at the airport. Can’t wait to meet you.”

Summary
The cottage is nicely lit, is the first thing Lena notices. It’s quaint, if a little rickety, but it’s nothing she can’t fix. She can already picture it now: gardens with flowers and nice, long days reading out on the porch.
Lena knows that sooner or later, someone is going to track her down. To demand something of her, maybe. But for now, she breathes in the crisp air. Basks in the warmth of golden rays of sunlight that peek out from behind distant mountains, the ones that signal the incoming morning. Feeling lighter already, she adjusts the duffel bag she has slung over her shoulder, hesitating for just a moment, before she takes a step toward the inviting building.
