Summary
Merlin doesn’t do it again, at least not for a while. It was understandable, especially after Arthur reacted so drastically at his first attempt at closeness, but Arthur still couldn’t help but spend another few sleepless nights regretting his reaction.
Because he was the prince of Camelot, and if Merlin - irresponsible, reckless, sarcastic Merlin - wasn’t willing to touch him, then no one was.
So when the second time came - when Merlin, most likely without thinking (“when does he ever think?”), went in for a hug, Arthur hugged back.

Summary
Because Arthur is all laughing with friends and doing sports and having girls faint at his feet, and Merlin is just Merlin. Arthur has no real reason to associate with Merlin after this, so Merlin just lifts his bag and sits next to some girl with brown hair as he silently mourns his silly little crush on the football captain.
Only, it doesn't end there.

Summary
And sooner or later, he finds himself picturing and writing about wanting a future with Merlin - a future where Merlin agrees with run off with Arthur to a small, remote village.
He's got it all written out - Arthur would feed the chickens and Merlin would pluck the berries they planted. They'd grow carrots and wheat and maybe even keep bees. They'd lean on each other and kiss as the sun sets.
Arthur would love Merlin, and Merlin would love him back.

Or: Arthur has kept a journal of all his wants ever since he was young. He finds it getting filled with nothing but Merlin.
