Summary
Once, Kaz had said that Wylan thought like a lockpick. Wrong. Wylan thought like a clock, ticking, ticking, counting down the seconds he had left to live.
Breathe, he told himself, told Jesper, as the world spun and the canal waters swallowed him under: six minutes. He could survive without oxygen for six minutes.
----------------------
Or, a Wylan character study: the one in which Wylan meets a lost prince, Jesper writes a song, and Kaz loses a chess match.

Summary
Wylan looked up, his gaze unreadable. “I’m trying something,” he said shortly. “It isn’t working.”
“The song?” Jesper asked. He dared to take a step inside. “Or the piano?”
“Both – there’s a loose wire.”
--------------
Or, a Jesper character study: the one in which Jesper teaches Wylan how to aim, Wylan teaches Jesper how to make gunpowder, and Kaz plants tea.

“Wylan?” Jesper asked, uncertain.
There was so much trust wrapped into his name, and all Wylan could taste was fear without courage.
He couldn’t breathe. “What did you do?”
--------------
Or, the one in which Wylan’s never defused an explosive before, Jesper prepares for a mercher ball, and Kaz and Inej snag an invitation.

Summary
Jesper Fahey wore bright orange suits, hung his grief on his wrist and called it fashion. But Kuwei’s own hands were stained the same vibrant orange, the same shade of an angry sunset, the same shade of the flames he summoned, an Inferni already doomed to hellfire.
They stood in Black Veil, a tomb in a graveyard where Kuwei had never had the chance to bury his father, in a country that he’d never be able to call home, in a language he’d lied about learning and would learn to love and hate in equal measure.
Blessing, the Zemeni called their Grisha, and yet Kuwei saw how Jesper spoke like he wasn’t one of them, how Jesper might already know the Shu words for them: witch, blight, woe. They had grown up being taught to hide, after all – no one in Shu Han knew Kuwei was an Inferni. They had grown up being taught to lie.
There were orange stains on Kuwei’s hands, and they were worse than any red: he didn’t call them grief. He didn’t call them guilt.
He called them inheritance.

Or, the one in defense of Kuwei Yul-Bo.
