Henry rolled his eyes. “No. You tell me — that sounds better — why I should bring my ex-hook up to my brother’s wedding?”
Pez hummed and half-shrugged. “Why wouldn’t you? He’s the perfect thing to light your gran’s helmet of hair on fire.” Pez set his cup down and leaned forward onto the table. “That’s what Pip encouraged you to do, didn’t he?”
“Martha more than Pip, but yes. He did.” Henry sighed.
“Then ask Alex.”

Not wanting to ask a stranger, he instead turns to Alex, hoping to manufacture something believable from something familiar. Summary
Staying at work late had become an unconscious part of Henry’s evenings.
Not because that’s where he wanted to be on a Friday night as a single, gay man in want of a live-in boyfriend. It wasn’t because he was – as his nieces kept insisting – keeping all the exhibits from coming to life and running off into the night. The truth was museums were very busy places. Whether one worked up front with the regular patrons, school groups, and special visitors, or in the back with the restorationists, archivists, and catalogers.
Especially when one was responsible for locating another country’s property, curating an exhibit about said property, and then organizing a gala for the exhibit, donors, and ambassadorial staff of the country the pieces would be returned to when the exhibit closed after five months.
Especially when a very handsome, inappropriately-dressed man falls out of a borrowed statue and into his lap on the night of the full moon.

It was a simple prospect — buying a new suit. But Henry had a nasty little habit of turning simple items into complete chores. He always had, blaming it on natural anxiety, coping, and other words gleaned from his patient-if-long-suffering therapist. The core of it was truly a lack of necessity and a lame gesture at thrift.
“Please,” Pez began between sips of latte. “For the love of all that is good in this world.” He tapped the business card set between them on the cafe table. “Call the gent.”

Summary
Henry had always been weak for a nice smile, but his was impossible to ignore.
Blame it on summer heat and a fresh flush in his cheeks. Blame it on sunset painting the outdoor bar sweltering, romantic colors. Blame it on two healthy glasses of albariño thrumming in his bloodstream, or the good music floating on the air.
Henry could blame it on anything liked if he thought long and hard about it, but that didn’t change much at the end. The core remained the same: he had been gone from the jump.

Heat radiated from the blacktop as Alex all but dragged Henry out of the gymnasium. Nora and June were enjoying cups of bad punch on the bleachers, finally able to steal a moment for themselves. So Henry and Alex stole one for themselves, Henry producing a carton of cigarettes as explanation for the teachers loitering by the doors.
Out of sight and out of mind, they slid into the back seat one at a time. Henry rolled down the windows, lighting a cigarette and pinning it in place to let the silvery smoke drift out into the night. Pushing Alex back, he slid onto his back in that perfect blue suit of his, legs spread in invitation.
And how could Alex refuse?
