Stupid seven year old Luffy doesn’t know how much trouble they’re in right now, doesn’t realize that with Sabo gone Ace is stumbling in the dark, trying to find a spot where his feet don’t immediately sink into the ground, he’s lost one brother today he is not going to lose another, he can’t.
“Verde,” Bluejam says, gesturing towards one of the scrawnier men. “Call our contact on Haven Island, tell her we’ve got a couple of packages on the way.”

(The rumors could have been wrong. Someone could have lied, produced a fake to pass off as the genuine article. But Rayleigh sailed with his captain for decades, and those? Those are Roger’s eyes.)

Summary
Ace stares upwards for a while, trying to understand what the hell he’s looking at. Gramps has never said shit about what the rest of the world’s like, but Dadan scoffs sometimes that the other Blues are weird, and the Grand Line is even weirder, so maybe this is like, some kind of normal bird for wherever the hell they are?
Right on the heels of that muddled thought is the realization the flaming bird is getting closer, circling their battered raft and descending with each loop.
Ace’s heartbeat speeds up. He braces his hands against the boards, heaves himself as much out of the water as he dares, and starts to shout: “Hey! Shoo! Go away, you don’t get to eat them! Go on, fly away you big buzzard!”
There’s a startled squawk, and the bird does back off a bit. But then it just hovers midair, trailing bits of fire as its wings flap. Ace would swear the stupid thing’s head tilts to one side, studying him, probably trying to figure out if he’s a real threat or not.
So he bares his teeth just like the jungle tigers and snarls, “You are not eating my brothers!”

Summary
She does not like being reminded of her history. Of being chained, and branded, forced to suffer for the pleasure of others. She especially does not like being reminded of feeling helpless to protect her sisters, suffering alongside in the same hell.
All of which is to say, when Hancock kicks down a heavy locked door, and finds herself staring down at a child holding himself braced in front of two others, her stomach swoops unpleasantly.

Summary
“Fuck,” is all Ace can say, when they’re finally left alone in a literal frozen hell.
“S’cold,” Luffy complains, slumping against him, and Ace automatically tries to hug the twelve year old. The chains binding his arms makes it a little trickier than usual, but he manages it, tries to tuck Luffy as much under his torn shirt as possible. They’ve gone through plenty of winters back on Dawn with decent snowfall, but apparently the Fifth Level of Impel Down is way worse.

As Aladine starts readying a water-bound attack group and Arlong stalks away shouting for his boarding party, Fisher Tiger reaches down to poke the skull hidden by a mass of fluffy hair - orange hair, it turns out, instead of brown, since someone managed to convince Koala she could take a long, thorough bath, with actual soap involved. “Go stay in my room until this is over, alright? Just because we aren’t going to kill doesn’t mean they won’t be trying to.”
“Okay,” the girl answers. Tiger twitches when she gives him a hug of all things, quick and light but there, before darting off.
Jinbei’s usual stoic expression looks a bit more forced than usual. “Oh shut up,” Tiger grumbles, drawing forth a snort from his first mate.

Sabo yells something behind his gag. Ace just snarls, mean as any tiger back home, and thrashes against the chains pinning him down. Luffy needs to struggle too, he needs to do something, but the stupid rock bands these guys clamped onto his arms are some kind of bad magic, making him feel exhausted even without moving at all.
