Now, him and Thomas are held hostage on an impromptu urban safari while Aldo digs himself further and further into the past.

Something has to be in the water. All of a sudden, Thomas is clingy like a koala, and on the other end, the Holy Father has been recruiting Aldo to sneak out into the world late at night.
Sure, Aldo may rejoice being the center of a small world after losing the papacy. He's only human, after all.
However, Vincent's and Thomas' relationship is rapidly cooling, and he realizes he needs to make decisions while being paralyzed himself.
