Summary
Haloxylon ammodendron. Visually unimpressive and easily overlooked; a hardy, stubborn species of shrubs and small trees in the Amaranth family. Better known by the common name saxaul, they cover a range that stretches from Egypt to Mongolia. Saxaul shrubs provide essential firewood and even extreme reserves of drinking water, for nomads in desert regions otherwise devoid of lumber.
Forests of saxaul, and even lone trees, brace and secure loose, sandy soil; counteracting erosion, preventing contamination from spreading, and acting as windbreaks.
