Summary
Kaz Brekker is not a fool. When he finds himself and his team trapped on a Fjerdan tank with an entire army of drüskelle ready to kill them, he knows there is only one reasonable way out. Nina is a reliable Heartrender, and when she declares that she can get them through to the boat using jurda parem, he believes her. The smart thing to do would be to let her make this sacrifice. But before he can consciously realize what he's doing, Kaz finds himself swallowing the powder instead. The parem burns his throat on its way down.
A divergence from "Only a fool expects the sea to bow (and Kaz Brekker is not a fool)", the previous fic in this series.

Summary

Part three of turning my Haltine headcanons into fics. Headcanon for this one:
Pauline is one of the only people who can make Halt laugh, and it's a lot less rare than most people think when they're alone. He almost smiles a normal amount when it's just them too. They'll occassionally just have late nights together where they'll just stay up late eating snacks and talking and maybe drinking some wine. They'll usually do this when they don't have anything important on the next day so it doesn't matter if they sleep in.

Summary
The muffled sound that followed, and the ones after that, burned Jessamine's terror away to make way for hot, raging fury at herself. She had stood in the Council chambers and been respectful as they dismissed all of her requests without any deliberation. She had been ambassador to Palaven when tension from the First Contact War had still been high. She could maintain her composure during whatever was happening outside her office.
Someone takes advantage of the absence of Jessamine's bodyguard to try to kill her. Not the best of timing, all things considered.
