    After nearly a year in prison, Breekon and Hope were just about ready to put their ingenious escape plan into motion. They had plotted, schemed, ironed out all the snags and hiccups, and spent several months painstakingly sharpening teaspoons.

    It was something of an anticlimax, then, to be called to an unscheduled parole hearing and told that, due to a very effective appeal (which they hadn’t even been aware of) the charges had been revised and their sentence drastically reduced.

    In short, they were free to go.

    Which was bewildering, of course, but they managed, just about, to prevent themselves from arguing on the grounds of all the effort they had put into their plans and to accept their release gracefully.

    My knee hurts today (recovering from surgery), so I’m writing Kaz’s knee/leg hurting today. This is totally self-indulgent, with Matthias going from finding Kaz totally annoying to . . . . well, a little less annoying.

    In my mind, Matthias is still alive and the gang is all still together causing mayhem, fighting for justice, swindling the rich, etc. Basically, I sort of ignore anything that happened after the first book or two.

    It’s been a bad day. The thought of touch, even through clothes made bile rise in his throat. He could barely move his leg enough to maneuver from his bed to his desk.

    If it was a better day, if he wasn’t required to put more thoughts on his leg, if he wasn’t as exhausted, if he’d gotten restful sleep the night prior, if he didn’t have a headache, if he didn’t feel the invisible pieces of glass shredding his throat every time he swallowed, if any of these were not a factor, perhaps the rest of the night wouldn’t have turned out the way it did.

    OR

    Kaz is having a bad day. He finally decides to ask for help, but finds he can’t.
