"You don’t have to," he said quietly.
The silence stretched between them, no longer sharp, no longer something she was desperate to fill with distance. It was just there, like an old friend. Familiar. Uncomfortable in the way truth always was.
Finally, Natasha turned her head to look at him again. Really look at him. The tired lines on his face, the pain weighing in his eyes. He truly meant every word.
So she let the fight drain out of her, just enough to say what she really meant. "I don’t want to shut you out," she admitted, her voice softer now. "I just don’t know how to not be angry."
Steve nodded like he understood. Like he’d been waiting for her to say it. "Then be angry." He held her gaze, steady, unwavering. "Just don’t go anywhere."

And when morning comes, when he presses a kiss to her temple and murmurs something soft that she will forget the moment he walks out the door, she pretends she is not waiting for the day he decides to leave for good.
Because Steve Rogers may be here with her now, but she is not the love of his life.
And she certainly is not the home he is searching for still.

She looked breathtaking. Always did. But tonight, something about her felt different. Untouchable. Distant.
The man beside her had barely left her side all night. He leaned in, whispering something against her ear, and she laughed. Soft, polite, but not the kind that reached her eyes. Steve knew her well enough to catch the difference. But yeah, maybe that was just his own wishful thinking.
His fingers curled tightly around the glass in his hand. He had kept his cool in worse situations, but right now, the sight of her with someone else made his grip tremble.
"For someone who has no right to get jealous, you look a little too green."

Natasha doesn’t deny it, her lips quirking into a smirk. “Stay still, okay?” she orders, punctuating the command with a quick kiss to the corner of his mouth. It’s brief, but enough to make him freeze, his playful grin softening into something more tender.
“That’s cheating,” he murmurs, his voice lower now, his eyes darkening a little.
“Whatever works,” she replies, already back to trimming his beard. He was already turned on when they were just starting but that kiss just made the things, well, him more…. Hard. He could just blame it on the cold air, but who is he kidding? He’s sitting between the legs of his stunning girlfriend, focused and effortlessly beautiful, even as she’s just trimming his beard.
God, he had it bad for her.

Steve blinked, caught off guard. "Right now? Here?"
"Yes, here," she said, grabbing his hand before he could object. She placed her phone in his other hand, swiftly pulling up her playlist until the familiar melody of the song "Stand by Me" began to play.
Natasha swayed first, her movements easy and natural, a small smile tugging at her lips as she tried to coax him into the rhythm. Steve hesitated, his feet planted as if the thought of dancing made him more nervous than a battlefield.
"Come on," Natasha teased, her voice light. "It’s just us. No audience, no judgment. Besides, I know you’ve got good moves old man, you’re just too polite to show them off."
Steve sighed, the corners of his mouth lifting into a reluctant smile as he finally gave in. I mean who is he kidding? He really couldn't resist the infectious joy radiating from Natasha's smile.
