    It’s as Shen Qingqiu crushes the last little fluttering Iridescent Gem Beetle that the mother decides to introduce herself by burrowing up out of the earth like a cicada the size of an elephant. He just barely has time to resign himself to an even more exhausting fight than the last one - with no rest point in between to chug stamina potions or anything! Honestly, what poor game design! - when the stranger appears.

    He charges into the scene out of nowhere like an absolute bullshit deus ex machina, all dark, flowing hair and robes, whirling around to stab at the Mother Beetle with a gleaming white sword, making it screech and rear back in pain. Seriously, Shen Qingqiu feels like he’s suddenly trapped in a video game cutscene introducing the new companion! Where’s the background music and camera close up? Who is this guy?

    Shen Qingqiu happens to meet a mysterious stranger on the road, but he surely isn't important or relevant to the plot in the slightest.

    Luo Binghe peeks up at him, eyes rimmed nearly as red as his demon mark. “Shizun won’t send me away from him?”

    Slowly, almost involuntarily, Shen Qingqiu's arms come up to embrace Luo Binghe in return. He’s already gone totally off-script here, what’s a little more adlibbing? He has fifteen seconds left before Luo Binghe must enter the Abyss. “I won’t,” he says quietly. “But you must be brave, Binghe. This will not be easy, but there is only one place for us to go. Shizun is sorry.”

    The two of them are only a few paces away from the cliff. Even without access to his cultivation, Shen Qingqiu has a height advantage, and more importantly, he has surprise on his side. It is almost too easy to clutch Luo Binghe tighter in his arms, step forward, and --

    Shen Qingqiu really hopes he doesn’t die when he hits the bottom. That would be so embarrassing.

    Still, he wishes, desperately and deep down in the back of his mind where he will never have to acknowledge it, for even a little bit of that sweet boy to survive, for even a little bit of his darling white lotus to stay with him.

    With a soft exhale, Shen Qingqiu opens his eyes and stares a little longer at the lotus blossom. Then, before he can think better of it, he plucks the blossom from its stem and reaches behind himself, carefully weaving it into the braid he’s tied his hair back in for this trip.

    Hands falling back to his sides, Shen Qingqiu fails to see the way the lotus woven into his braid pulses with a gentle, white glow until its rhythm matches the steady beat of his heart.

    Shen Qingqiu has an encounter with a very special flower that grants him a very special wish, one that he doesn't even know he's made.

    Luo Binghe stared back at him. There was something distant in his eyes, something Shen Qingqiu was too tired, too drained, to decipher. Then, Luo Binghe’s lips opened in a non-apology, a soft, murmured sentence—a quiet, “I need to know the truth.”

    Shen Qingqiu frowned. He opened his mouth to question the damn-near imploring words, but he never got the chance.

    He failed to notice something was in Luo Binghe’s hands until it was too late.
