Vash huffs. “Hello? Yoo-hoo! Anyone home?”
Wolfwood doesn’t answer, because no, there is absolutely nobody home. His last brain cell seems to have thrown itself on its own blade as an act of devotion, as if to prove that he would do anything for this woman if she only asked. He can pinpoint the moment that Vash sees what he’s seeing, because there’s a soft gasp to his left, and then a hand grasps his wrist. He’s not sure if it’s supposed to be grounding for him or for Vash, but he thinks both of them need it when Meryl finally spots the two of them and lights up, smiling brightly as she weaves her way through the crowd.
Christ help them, they’re both so fucking whipped.

Cigarette held between her fingers, Meryl pushes her free hand through the cloud of smoke right in front of her. It’s tangible, an arrangement of particles so close she can almost feel it, but it’s just out of reach, unable to be touched. How could something as simple as smoke engulf her life completely, able to fill her lungs with vitality and meaning, only for her to reach out and touch nothing?
Just like the one-armed man she’d finally found.
Where Meryl needs a smoke break and Vash follows her out to the dune ranger.
