Beatrice was dragged to the altar of Catholicism. She did not easily go to her knees, but was nonetheless cowed before it. She learned guilt, and let it bite at her heels. With every step she understood and regretted each she had taken out of line.
She regretted who she loved. She regretted who she was.
Shannon had insisted she was wrong. "The God I believe in wouldn't damn you for who and how you love," Shannon had told her. But now Shannon was gone. All that remained was her duty to the Halo. All that remained was Ava.
In crisis, Beatrice finds herself kneeling at a different altar entirely.

Though their reasons for being there couldn’t be more different, they found each other.

Summary
Looking at Beatrice, the freckles dusted across her nose and the way her eyes crinkle when she laughs, Ava is hit by a wave of melancholy. Why did her life here have to come now? It feels as if she’s living her life backwards, part of some cruel joke played upon Ava by a God which hates her. This should be saved for a time when so much pressure did not rest upon her shoulders. This brief haven of pure companionship, a simple life, normal jobs, sharing a bed with someone beautiful – why now? Why make her experience such wonder when the inevitable will come, when it will be snatched from her overnight?
