Joel finds Ellie starving and homeless in an alley on a freezing night. He takes her in soon after. In the relative comfort of her new life, Ellie sorts out her complicated past and reconsiders her cynical worldview. Meanwhile, Joel struggles with his own past and with his second chance at fatherhood. Tess sees fragments of her own life in Ellie's, and works to ensure that Ellie knows there is still light, somewhere in this world.
Title is from the lovely poem "First Lesson" by Phillip Booth.

It was too much, too fast, too soon. PJ was just barely understanding that she didn’t like Brittany so much as she liked the 𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘢 of Brittany. She didn’t want to do the same thing to Hazel.
Hazel had finally gone back to being her friend. Her quirky, goofy, oddball friend who made bombs for fun and sat in seats with her legs sprawled out like a child playing on the floor.
She went back to being Hazel. And PJ didn’t want anything to jeopardize that.
“Guys, guys, guys—“ Hazel busted through the doors of the gym, scrambling over to the club with so much excitement PJ was a little worried she’d hurt herself. She was grinning like a complete idiot as she dropped her backpack on the ground and did a little jump. “I just got asked out!”
𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵.
OR: A few weeks after the football massacre, things are finally back to normal between PJ and Hazel (after PJ avoiding talking about her feelings like the plague and Hazel finally giving up) and she's ready to leave the kiss and her complicated, totally platonic and not at all life-ruining feelings behind her.
That is, until Hazel suddenly gets a girlfriend. A girlfriend who, frankly, in PJ's opinion, is a total 𝘣𝘪𝘵𝘤𝘩.

“You said you needed a distraction. That’s like, code for make out, isn’t it?” Hazel looked around the table for reassurance.
But the others were too busy trying not to laugh. They could understand now how Hazel made the mistake, because the last time PJ insisted on a distraction, making out is exactly what they did.
It really was PJ’s fault. She did it to herself.
“Uh, yeah, you got it.” Josie spoke up before PJ could say anything.
PJ’s jaw dropped in disbelief.
“Yeah, distraction totally equals kiss.” Stella-Rebecca grinned. “Remember that if PJ ever needs another…distraction.”
“It’s your new code word.” Sylvie stated through a laugh.
They were obviously teasing, finding the entire misunderstanding hilarious.
But it was clear on Hazel’s face that she didn’t know that, as she brightened and nodded proudly, like she’d finally done something right for the first time. “Right, I got it! Call on me and I’ll be there.”
OR: The girls play a joke on Hazel, PJ gets a make-out buddy, everything nearly blows up (not literally) and somehow it just barely works out.

PJ snapped her head over towards Josie with wide eyes full of stress. “Yeah, that’s right, I have to ask her, I have to ask Hazel Callahan, the girl I’ve been the biggest dick to for years, on a date. Josie I literally treated her like garbage for as long as we’ve known her!”
“And you apologized, besides we’ve already established all of your dick behavior was disguised attraction.” Josie insisted simply.
“But Hazel doesn’t know that!” PJ snapped as she continued to pace. “I already completely blew it with Britanny, I don’t want to blow it with Hazel too.”
Josie rolled her eyes. “This is not the same thing at all. Brittany was straight, of course it didn’t work out. Hazel is…” She paused, eyebrows furrowing. “Hazel’s a lesbian, right?”
“Josie, she has a wolfcut and mommy issues, she’s definitely a lesbian.” PJ said like it was obvious.
OR: It's 3 months after the football game incident and surprise, surprise, PJ still can't flirt.
