Blood splattered and congealed across the floor, leaking from the long, graceful neck of the decapitated swan. One clean sssshk of Suya’s scissors and the new recruit, with its beautiful, perfect feathers, hadn’t the time to squawk, let alone notice its own inevitable, impending murder. Two more shhks and the ghost sheets had fallen like flies, their silken bodies fluttering like the softest veils onto the castle floors. Suya had stuffed those in her basket, along with the body of the swan-demon, and left the barrage of decapitated heads behind her for someone else to clean up. The screams and sighs of the castle denizens clambered behind her as she wandered back to her bedroom-cell.
