He fumbled in his right trouser pocket, then his left, then his jacket pockets increasingly frantically, checking them all a second time in case he had somehow missed the thin piece of plastic he needed.
It wasn’t there.
Shane had a horrible suspicion he knew where it was.
He thought back to draping his jacket over the back of the couch in Rozanov’s hotel room, folding his shirt and trousers and putting them in the same spot. His keycard must still be in Rozanov’s room.
He briefly considered just sleeping in the hallway.
(Shane leaves his keycard in Ilya's room. He has a breakdown. Ilya fixes it.)

Summary
Techno had expected some things to change when he had become an official castle guard, of course. There's a big difference between being the teenage captain of a rebelling militia versus working under the man that they were trying to overthrow. It hasn't been all bad. Here, Techno's sleeping in a real bed in a real room instead of in a rain-soaked, muddy tent. It's an upgrade.
Still, he hadn't quite been prepared for the royal family. When Phil had descended on their tiny group with his men, Techno had expected to die, terror running cold through his veins. But the emperor hadn't killed him. He'd taken him in instead, had given him his new role. That was unexpected, truly, and he certainly hadn't expected the emperor to stick around. He hadn't expected to become the personal guard of Phil's only son.
But there's a catch to it all.
There always is.

Or, Techno is getting beat by the guards during training and Phil has some things to say about that.
