But he must pick up on something because he tilts his head at her in suspicion. “Why are you looking at me like that?”

The guns were definitively pointed at her now, the chauvinistic smirks gone from their faces. A chill breeze from the ocean swirled the smattering of sand at their feet, the fumes of evening traffic thick in the air. Hajek cocked his head at her, eyes slitted and jaw set. “You’ll do what you’re damn well told.” he growled and just then she felt Tim’s fingers slide into her belt loops.
“Baby, babe...” He drew her back against him, leaning on the car, and slipped his hands from her belt loops into her front pockets. Her concentration wavered precariously, fracturing in two when he brushed his nose along her temple, lips against her cheek, as he pulled her down to sit on his leg. Eyes on Hajek, skin burning everywhere she could feel Tim.
She couldn’t fight it. Sava wouldn’t.

Summary
All she wants to do right now is pull Tim in close, allowing his arms to hold her together while she does the same for him. The tension would seep from their bones, the comfort of home wrapping them in a warmth they can’t get anywhere else as the past retreats into distant shadows.
But they don’t have that luxury right now.
There’s a girl somewhere out there that needs them. And she needs them to be sergeants, not two people splintering under the weight of a past that’s far out of reach.
