Summary
Hazel belongs to an order of spirits known as guardians - and, by humans, more colloquially known as Guardian Angels. Assigned wards at the whim of the Powers That Be, Hazel has long since been more than a little apathetic towards his purpose and careless with his wards. The sooner a ward slips through his fingers and dies, the sooner Hazel can be independent once again - at least until a new assignment.
When Hazel is assigned a child to watch over, he is less than pleased. Humans were a bother - children were a nightmare. He doesn't expect to have to concern himself with this ward for longer than a couple of years at most.
But Fleece has a lot more to teach him than he expects.

The flock just keeps growing. I can care for it on a large scale, but it's more feasible to stay on top of things on a more, I guess… relational level if there's more than just one person at the head," they explain with a nod, seeming satisfied with themself. And oddly, it's their forthright manner here that's throwing him off guard, more than anything.
Through the crown, he had listened in on their sermons. They were a talented preacher, sometimes fearsome and sometimes loving, always grandiose. He'd drunk deep of the devotion their fervor inspired, and of their own fidelity to the gospel in their hand, penned carefully in his name. Their own worship.
And now, they spoke to him as if they were haggling with one of the vendors on the outskirts. Like that poorly disguised cannibal who sold them fish.
"So, I think it'd be a logical course of action if we just get married, and lead together," they finish, nodding again.-

Yellow was sent here to kill, but he's not exactly doing a very good job of it. Between faking expertise as the ship's electrician, avoiding the suspicion of his peers, and trying not to melt down out of sheer panic, he hasn't managed much in the way of sabotage and murder.
Then one of his crewmates finds out what he really is—and instead of having Yellow killed, White wants to know more. A lot more.
