Summary
John realizes what’s happening on the sixth loop.
In retrospect, it’s fucking embarrassing that it took him so long to figure it out—that this isn’t an illusion, and it’s not him finally going mad, and it’s not a dream or a trick or a torment devised by the King to fuck with them. It’s not like he doesn’t know that time is as malleable as clay in the hands of gods. The Dark World taught him many lessons that he’d like to forget, and that’s one of them.
It’s just been a little hard to concentrate when Arthur keeps fucking dying.

When John decides to stay with Arthur as he bleeds out on the King’s plateau, he expects them both to die. Instead, they find themselves brought back in time to the first moment they stepped onto the plateau—and Arthur has no recollection of their confrontation with the King. John soon realizes that they’re stuck in a time loop that restarts every time Arthur dies.

The thing that Arthur remembers the most from the first time John consumes him is the darkness.
He’s blind, of course—the complete sort, where there’s never anything but nothing. Still, when Arthur casts his mind back, all he can recall is how the world grew somehow, impossibly, frighteningly black. Blacker than black. The sort of black he imagines one might find at the center of a great, yawning void. Madness-inducing black.

Or, in the Dreamlands, John discovers that he’s able to manifest physically. This is not without consequences for Arthur.

The last thing Peter sees is Tony's horrified, heartbroken expression leaning over him. The guilt in his eyes is almost worse than the burning pain that's taking Peter apart piece by piece. The world starts to go dark.
There's a flash of gold and green. For one moment, he finds himself standing amongst the Guardians and others. And then darkness again. It feels like blinking; an extended period of nothingness that ends as abruptly as it begins. One moment there’s nothing, the next there’s light.
“Easy,” a woman says. Her words are gentle, and carry a slight accent that he can’t place. "I'm called Wonder Woman. What's your name?"
