Obviously Ilya would love it if Shane opened up and talked to him about it but he figured if Shane wouldn’t talk to him maybe he could talk to someone else. Maybe a therapist, or his parents or Rose or… Hayden. As much as Ilya disliked the idea of Shane going to Hayden to talk about his problems instead of him, it was better than to keep it all inside.
Shane shrugged at the idea. “I don’t feel like I could talk to anyone about this…” His eyes were open now and glassy. He swallowed hard as he avoided looking at Ilya.
OR; Shane is hiding something from Ilya... from everyone. And Ilya is worried sick.

Some call the wastes lawless. An endless stretch of nothing save for dry winds that rob one of their breath and sand their skin bare, broken up by scrounging rogues and outlanders who owe no honor to anyone. Where order goes to die.
At one time, Dysir thought this was a dramatic over-telling of the basic truth that when there is not enough to spare, those with less struggle the most. There are laws here, if one cared to know them. Nature's laws. One must be willing and able to do what is needed to survive.
With no skin to sand or breath to lose, Dysir found it far more bearable than he'd been warned about to live outside the laws of humans who feared the elements and animals within the wastes. A machine made to survive and endure taking to a vagabond's life seemed poetic even. Destined. He was made for this.
But now, he wasn't so sure. Not a single thing about the wastes was terrible--excluding the limited access to recharging stations at times--and yet every obstacle he could face with ease presented a new challenge he'd never considered since...
Why did he have to stop? Why could he not just ignore the pitiful crying?
Why was there even a baby out here to begin with?

“...hey, Kaz,” Wylan asks as Kaz has his shoulder to him while putting files away properly.
“What?” Kaz says almost distractedly.
“...you’ve never said why you wear gloves all the time,” Wylan hedges.
Kaz looks up and over at him. “...that’s irrelevant to the task at hand,” he says stiffly.
“I know,” Wylan agrees. “I’m still asking.” He hands Kaz another, smaller stack of files. They’re getting to the end of them.
“...well, get used to not knowing,” Kaz says harshly.
Wylan doesn’t blink or flinch at the sudden abrasive tone Kaz is using. He’s found a slightly sore subject of Kaz’s, he thinks. “Okay. Maybe instead of that, you should get used to telling your friends your secrets,” he suggests lightly. “It might be good for you emotionally."
Kaz freezes, his hands stiff and handing off his tense arms. Then he pretends he didn’t just freeze, working diligently on the files he’s organizing in some specific way.
Kaz still doesn’t say a thing more. He just gestures to Wylan to hand him the last of the stack of files.
Wylan doesn’t push him any further right now.Or,

After negotiating the terms of Mol's contract to include clauses that prevent Raphael from using Mol from doing anything much worse than lying and stealing, taking up every second of the teenager's time, and disciplining Mol through torture--no one wants another Enver Gortash, after all--the devil finds his frequent renegotiations with Tav are actually useful, enlightening, and, though he wouldn't admit it, enjoyable at times. Mol notices as her patron starts to call on Tav for all things "Mol-related," even when it isn't strictly necessary, and she can't help but interfere a little bit. She gets Haarlep, Yurgir, and even Korrilla involved, if only because the devil is always in a better mood when Tav is around. With enough meddling, maybe Mol can feel like she is part of a home, a feeling she hadn't experienced since fleeing Elturel.
