His hand is the last thing he gets, Kirishima’s hand in his, and right before it’s torn away and he’s swallowed away by the world Katsuki catches sharpy writing on the back of it.

    The Pit, it says.

    But then he’s gone.

    Summary

The closet in the hall holds the thicker comforter that he sleeps with in the winter. Shane doesn’t recognize his own hands as he yanks it out from the top shelf, watching it tumble onto the floor and trail behind him as he hefts it into his bedroom, laying down on his bed and pulling it over him.

He ducks his head underneath, blanketing his own sight in blue-tinted darkness. The ringing in his ears lessens, the ache behind his eyes softens. Shane knows what he’s done, but maybe if he just doesn’t think the word, it doesn’t have to be true. Maybe he can ignore all of these implications and keep doing what he’s been doing for so long, avoiding the change that looms over him like an executioner’s blade.

    The nest is still wrong.

The realization makes his breath catch in his throat. Panic collapses like a dying star in his chest—not an outward explosion, loud and impossible to ignore, but a quiet implosion, the integrity of his choices quickly falling away in the face of instincts he’s been suppressing like this for five years.

    -

Or, Shane and Ilya spontaneously bond. Neither of them are ready for the domino effect of consequences.

    “You know how this ends.”

The bard swallows and summons up the mask of confidence better suited to wooing crowds. “One can only hope it includes an end to stupid questions.”

They jerk the chair he’s chained to backwards and tilt it until the only thing keeping it upright are their hands. Behind him, another drags the tub into place. He pants, struggling through the panic and the petty need to keep them from knowing that they’re getting to him. He knows it’s a losing battle.

“Last chance, bard,” the hated voice whispers into his ear.

He fills his lungs with the fetid smelling air of the prison and tries to find the resolve that had been enough to make him face Nilfgaard alone.

A sigh. “Have it your way.”

The water closes over his head.

    Summary

“Come here,” he said. So close to a plea. “Everything else aside, just…come here, Nes. I’m still here.”

He wasn’t—he’d been more distant than ever. Coming to bed late, and leaving for the dining room before she even had the chance to wake up properly. It felt like their last conversation had been ages ago, before the girl fell onto Rhys’ lawn.

She remembered the night before it all happened. Their last night together: her hands held above her head, and him smiling and whispering words against her neck while he made love to her.

“You are the most precious thing in the world to me,” he’d said, under the bright moonlight.

She missed his steady presence, and the physical comfort he gave so easily.

    She missed him.

    Summary

Cassian could only watch as she turned her forearm, and he took in the lines moving vertically up and down. They were all on top of each other, as if she’d tried again and again to open the wound. On a human, such a blow would have been fatal in minutes. But for a fae… it took every ounce of his ability not to fall to his knees.

“Nesta,” he said carefully, so soft and delicate, but she just kept speaking quietly, as if he wasn’t actually there and she was instead addressing whatever version of him existed in her mind.

“I was hoping not to wake you. Actually, I was hoping you would do it,” she muttered, shaking her head. “I thought that was why we were here. But then you just kept walking and walking, and I couldn’t fucking take it anymore.”

    “Do what, Nes?”

“Well, you’re supposed to kill me, aren’t you?”

An ACOSF rewrite of the hike, in which Cassian's observation of Nesta's self-harming mental state is addressed/manifested and what it takes to heal from it.
