His earliest memory is disorientation and heaviness in the back of his mind. There's a faint echo of a woman's words, but it slips from his mind whenever he tries to chase it.
His second earliest memory is a smell that brings him comfort and safety. It's almost nostalgic, familiar and warm, and he struggles to open his eyes to find out what is he smelling.
He would forget his first thought upon smelling that woody and spice scent when he opens his eyes, but at that moment, he thinks:

Herta Space Station always smell clean, almost clinical. Most researchers either consume scent blockers or some sort of high-tech collars that neutralize their scents when the collar is worn. So apart from scents of items or materials, there's not much that can be picked up from the place.
However, Dan Heng picks up a peculiar scent — it's faint enough that had Dan Heng hadn't been trying to look for it, in search for injured personnels, he wouldn't have been able to smell it. But now that he's on the look for it, Dan Heng can pinpoint the source of the scent.
A man is sitting on the floor, leaning against the wall. Slumped. Unconscious.One year later, Dan Heng finally understands the meaning behind the scent of moonflower that he smelled that day.
