Summary
I’m Vex Mercer, twenty-one, third-year Gale City University problem child, and somehow I’ve ended up with a very serious crush on my project partner.
Her name’s Fiona Walsh. She’s quiet, brilliant, painfully polite, and exactly the sort of girl who should know better than to waste her time on me. We got shoved together for an end-of-year project, I treated it like a joke, she ended up doing most of the work, and we were barely on speaking terms for months.
Then one night, during a storm, at a bus stop. She helped me through something ugly without even knowing it was me.
Which is, frankly, where my life starts going to hell.
After that I can’t look at her normally. I keep trying to act like myself—loud, sarcastic, vaguely threatening, hot enough to be forgiven for some of it—but now I’m also showing up for the project, accidentally defending her in public, and having a deeply embarrassing amount of feelings about the way she says thank you.
So basically: I was supposed to coast through uni smoking, swearing, and doing the bare minimum. Instead I’m stuck in a group project, in emotional danger, and one soft-spoken math girl away from a complete psychological collapse.
